Ideal for: All staff with responsibilities for carrying out formal and developmental observations including Advanced Practitioners, Learning Mentors, Teacher Trainers, Curriculum Leaders, Heads of Department, Staff Development Managers, Quality Managers. Event Information: In anticipation of a New Common Inspection Framework in September 2015, this session reflects the changing inspection priorities for judging outstanding teaching and learning that will come into force next academic year. It explores the essential skills, feedback and coaching techniques for carrying out accurate and supported observation judgements in graded and non-graded schemes, reflecting good practice from grade 1 providers, recent observation research, the new professional teaching standards and OFSTED’s guidance on peer observation. It covers: The Skills and Attributes of Outstanding Teachers: Defining what we mean by ‘outstanding’; interpreting the OFSTED grade boundaries, identifying the key skills and attributes of effective teachers. Planning for OFSTED 2015: The 2015 OFSTED inspection priorities; how OFSTED are defining ‘learning’, ‘impact’, ‘progress’, ‘value-added’, ‘equality’, ‘employability’ and ‘maths & english’; examples of Grade 1-4 practices. Practical Workshops in Observing Against the OFSTED Grade Boundaries: OFSTED training exercises that examine how to judge and grade a sample lesson; discussions of good practice and how these can be imported into your own college. Giving Observation Feedback: Principles of effective feedback; drawing out improvements from the observee; building a ‘learning dialogue’; giving constructive criticism; giving effective feedback to the Grade 4 teacher. Using Non-Graded Observation to Improve Teaching & Learning: Types of non- graded observation schemes, ensuring quality and accountability, discussion of good practice. The session is led by Bradley Lightbody. Bradley is the Director of Collegenet and author of the best selling textbook 'Outstanding Teaching and Learning 14-19' - now in its 2nd edition - which provides guidance on how FE colleges can achieve Grade 1 performance.
