PURPOSE To inspire us to be more Christlike by applying the wise counsel in the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. 8. Proverbs are short sayings that generally give counsel about living righteously. The Old Testament records that Solomon spake three thousand proverbs (1 Kings 4:32). Some of these wise sayings are included in the book of Proverbs. Although Solomon and the other authors of this book were not prophets, their writings generally reflect a belief that true wisdom comes from God. The book of Ecclesiastes also contains wise sayings, and some people believe Solomon to be its author. The message of Ecclesiastes is that life is meaningful only through God. 9. THIS LESSON IS DIVIDED INTO SEVEN SECTIONS THAT FOCUS ON IMPORTANT TOPICS IN PROVERBS AND ECCLESIASTES. 1. Wisdom 2. Trust in the Lord 3. The words we speak 4. Pride 5. Friendship 6. Raising children 7. Happiness and good humor 10. HAPPINESS AND GOOD HUMOR Why is it important to develop a happy attitude and a good sense of humor? Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Proverbs 17:22. A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. 11. LAUGHTER'S EFFECTS ON THE BODY In the last few decades, researchers have studied laughter's effects on the body and turned up some potentially interesting information on how it affects us: Blood flow. Researchers at the University of Maryland studied the effects on blood vessels when people were shown either comedies or dramas. After the screening, the blood vessels of the group who watched the comedy behaved normally -- expanding and contracting easily. But the blood vessels in people who watched the drama tended to tense up, restricting blood flow. Immune response. Increased stress is associated with decreased immune system response, says Provine. Some studies have shown that the ability to use humor may raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body and boost the levels of immune cells, as well. Blood sugar levels. One study of 19 people with diabetes looked at the effects of laughter on blood sugar levels. After eating, the group attended a tedious lecture. On the next day, the group ate the same meal and then watched a comedy. After the comedy, the group had lower blood sugar levels than they did after the lecture. Relaxation and sleep. The focus on the benefits of laughter really began with Norman Cousin's memoir, Anatomy of an Illness. Cousins, who was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful spine condition, found that a diet of comedies, like Marx Brothers films and episodes of Candid Camera, helped him feel better. He said that ten minutes of laughter allowed him two hours of pain-free sleep. 12. PRES. HUGH B. BROWN I would like to have you smile because after all we must keep a sense of humor whatever comes. I think of all the people in the world we should be the happiest. We have the greatest and most joyous message in the world. I think when we get on the other side, someone will meet us with a smile (unless we go to the wrong place and then someone will grin), so let us be happy. But let our happiness be genuinelet it come from within (The Abundant Life [1965], 83). 13. HAPPINESS AND GOOD HUMOR What can we do to encourage uplifting humor in our families? Lyndsey acting up then I will. Any stories about times when humor has helped your families solve problems and grow in love for each other. 14. A newcomer to Salt Lake City, and a non-researcher, got a job as a clerk at one of the big department stores. She received her introduction to genealogy one day when a customer came into the store and asked " Where do I find the Family Group Sheets?" The new clerk, with a shocked look on her face, answered, " Family Group Sheets ? All we carry are the King, Queen, double and twin size sheets." 18. FOOD STORAGE Q: What do you get when you cross a Kleptomaniac and a Mormon? A: A basement full of stolen food. 19. WISDOM What differences are there between being learned and being wise? Proverbs 1:7; 9:910; 2 Nephi 9:2829. 20. WISDOM 2 Nephi 9:2829. 28 O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. 29 But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God. 21. WISDOM What differences are there between being learned and being wise? Proverbs 1:7; 9:910; 2 Nephi 9:2829. Wisdom is more than knowledge; it is the proper application of knowledge. To the Israelites, wisdom meant obedience to Gods laws. So How do we obtain the knowledge of God? 22. PROVERBS 2:2-6 2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. Why do you think it requires diligence to obtain this knowledge? 23. 24. PROVERBS 3:13-18 13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding 14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her. 25. How does the value of wisdom compare to the value of earthly treasures? How does wisdom bring happiness and peace? Proverbs 3:18 says that wisdom is a tree of life to those who have it. The value of wisdom? What is the tree of life a symbol of? Gods love 26. What qualities of wise people are listed in Proverbs 15:3133? 31 The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. 32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. 33 The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility. Why are these qualities necessary to gain wisdom? 27. Did they use wisdom? Yes when they decided not to jump! 28. THE WORDS WE SPEAK Proverbs 6:1619 lists seven things the Lord hates. A proud look A lying tongue Hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations Feet that be swift in running to mischief A false witness that speaketh lies He that soweth discord among brethren. Three of these thingslying, bearing false witness, and sowing discordapply to the words we speak. 29. THE WORDS WE SPEAK Why is the Lord so concerned with the words we speak? Proverbs 16:2728; 18:8; 25:18; Matthew 12:3637. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. How can we overcome the problems of lying, gossiping, or speaking negatively about others? 30. THE WORDS WE SPEAK Proverbs 16:24 says that pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul. What benefits come from speaking softly when a disagreement arises? Elder Gordon B. Hinckley said: We seldom get into trouble when we speak softly. It is only when we raise our voices that the sparks fly and tiny molehills become great mountains of contention (in Conference Report, Apr. 1971, 82; or Ensign, June 1971, 72). Proverbs 15:1. A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. 31. TRUST IN THE LORD What counsel is given in Proverbs 3:57? How does the Lord direct our paths? What experiences have taught you to trust the Lord? What does it mean to acknowledge God? (See Proverbs 3:6; Alma 34:38; D&C 59:21.) How are we blessed as we acknowledge him?
