F or ten years, Leightons Hearing Care has been expertly testing people's hearing and providing life-changing digital hearing solutions. We've built our business mainly through word of mouth, based on our renowned service, which continues to reflect the enduring principles of 'Listen, empathise, educate and delight' defined by my grandfather when he began Leightons Opticians in 1928. To celebrate our first decade, we've completely refreshed Talking Points magazine, including moving to the Berlina format, which we feel is the ideal way to deliver our news and the latest from the world of hearing and optical.
This relaunch edition is full of interesting
features, encompassing everything from the latest
hearing technology breakthroughs, to top tips for
healthy eating and looking after your eyes and
ears. We introduce some new expert members of
our growing audiology team, and highlight some
of our latest services, including our Ultimate Eye
Examination, which uses pioneering technology
and longer consultation time, to provide the best
care for your whole family.
You'll also discover a fascinating feature about
the short film we produced in connection with
Sideways Cornwall. Filmed in central London
using specialist equipment, it reveals the effects
of hearing loss in noisy situations.
Please take a few moments to watch the film
online at www.leightons.co.uk/hearing-care/
hearing-loss/ and we'd love you to help us
raise awareness by sharing it with others, to
enable more people to live their lives to the full.
We hope you enjoy our new issue, and we look
forward to hearing your feedback. Happy reading!

A closer look at the latest innovations now available at Leightons.
F irst, a few words about technology at Leightons. With so many high street alternatives, why come to us for your hearing aids? Well, the fact is that while other providers may claim to offer up-to-date technology, that's not always the case. By contrast, when you discuss your options with a Leightons audiologist, you can rest assured that you're being offered the very latest technology from leading manufacturers, including:
Phonak Venture products (which have superseded Phonak Quest and Phonak Smart)
Oticon Alta 2 Pro/Nera 2 Pro/Ria 2 Pro products (which have replaced Oticon Alta/Nera/Ria and Oticon Agil/Acto/Ino)
Widex Unique products (which have replaced Widex Dream and Widex Clear)
Coming soon is the Oticon Opn, the worlds first hearing aid that connects to the internet via the If This Then That service (IFTTT.com) which can connect a range of everyday devices.
With Leightons you'll benefit from the very latest and best products, which, coupled with our unique expertise and experience, will help you maximise your hearing capabilities.
Audibly big. Visibly small.
We're proud to offer the latest range of custom fit
hearing aids from renowned Swiss manufacturer Phonak.
The Virto V (Venture) range offers groundbreaking audio
performance in the industrys most discreet designs.
1. AutosenseThese hearing aids automatically analyse incoming
sounds in real time, providing the most appropriate
settings for maximum speech understanding, without
the need for manual adjustment. Dedicated settings for
speech in car, speech in loud noise, comfort in echo
and music, provide unparalleled audibility in even the
most challenging listening environments.
2. Binaural VoiceStream TechnologyThe full spectrum of sounds is streamed between the
two hearing aids, giving maximum speech understanding
and improved sound quality. This gives more signal
and less noise and particularly improves the quality of
speech in windy conditions.
3. Phonak CROS II CustomThe only custom solution for single-sided deafness,
with better clarity and much improved battery life over
previous CROS systems.
4. AccessoriesPhonak Virto V aids can be used with a range of helpful
accessories, whether you want to stream audio from the
TV, stereo or phone directly into the hearing aid, or even
use your smartphone as a remote control.
New solutions for single-sided deafness
In the past, customers with single-sided deafness were
often disappointed to find no specific solution for them.
Happily, with the new CROS systems, that's no longer
the case. CROS stands for 'contralateral routing of signal'.
By wirelessly sending sounds from the deaf side to
the better hearing ear, the wearer can hear speech from
both sides with equal clarity, making struggling in noisy
environments a thing of the past. The Phonak CROS II
system offers the greatest improvement yet for people
with single-sided deafness. Here are some of
the benefits:
StereoZoom allows speech to be picked up in any
direction and heard above the background noise.
Battery life is better than ever, thanks to the Venture
chip with more efficient wireless processing.
CROS II is available in discreet behind-the-ear models,
or custom made in-the-ear solutions.
AutoSense Accurately and precisely adapts to provide a seamless listening experience. Move from one environment to the other, no button
pushing needed.
Binaural VoiceStream Technology Control both hearing instruments with
one touch of a button. Focus on what's important - your hearing.
Phonak CROS II Custom The smart solution for single-sided deafness
with a range of colour choices available.
Accessories Useful add-ons link to your hearing aids
to help you hear more in difficult or challenging situations.

The best of both worlds
For those customers concerned about combining hearing aids with glasses, spectacle hearing aids
offer a smart solution. Joining forces with Starkey Hearing Technologies, we combine our two areas
of expertise hearing and vision care to bring you the highest quality spectacle hearing aids.
These innovative products contain up to four separate microphones in each arm of the spectacles,
which preserves the directionality that many hearing loss sufferers are missing, to provide
maximum speech clarity and a natural sound. Rechargeable batteries add to the convenience of this
cosmetically appealing solution.
Wider sound from Widex
At Leightons, we're proud to provide the latest and most innovative hearing solutions, which is
why we offer Unique, the next generation in hearing aid technology from Widex. Over decades
of market leading performance, Widex has built a solid reputation for first class solutions
incorporating their trademark Widex sound. With Unique, Widex offers benefits that take hearing
to the next level, including:
A wider sound picture, letting you comfortably hear both soft and loud sounds.
The best wind noise reduction system available, so you can hear speech clearly, even in
windy conditions.
Automatic detection of your listening situation, to ensure you hear the right sound at the right
time, in the right place.
Widex Unique is available in a full range of styles and power levels, from discreet micro
custom devices for mild to moderate hearing losses, to elegant behind-the-ear options for
more severe prescriptions.
Listening effort
Hearing loss affects not just what you
can and can't hear, but also your ability
to listen. A hearing deficit can require an
increase in concentration to 'fill in the gaps'.
Many people do this by lip-reading,
using the context of conversation and
observing physical gestures.
People with inadequately treated
hearing loss often find that they become
increasingly tired as the day progresses.
By evening it may be easier to avoid
conversation altogether rather than
continuing to strain to hear, and as a
result they can often feel distant and
socially isolated.
By correcting hearing loss with up-to-date
hearing aids that are correctly set by an
experienced hearing professional, we can
greatly reduce the strain of listening.
Free Hearing Assessment

aftercare service.

Find out how we can help with this common hearing problem.
aboutALL
TinnitusT innitus is a sensation of sound in the head or ears. This sound has no external source, but includes the sensations of ringing, buzzing, hissing and whistling. These sounds can be continuous or intermittent and can vary in loudness. Around 10% of adults have tinnitus, and while some people are able to manage their tinnitus well, others find it can affect their quality of life, causing stress, anxiety and sleep deprivation.
There are many ways to take control of your tinnitus and reduce its impact
on your life. Although there is no cure, you can manage the symptoms by
wearing hearing aids, or through sound therapy.
If you have hearing loss, wearing hearing aids can help reduce your
awareness of tinnitus. Hearing aids amplify the sounds you would not
usually hear and therefore tinnitus often appears reduced or absent whilst
the hearing aids are worn. The Oticon Alta2 Pro Ti goes further than this,
employing built-in tinnitus management technology to keep the effects of
tinnitus at a minimum.
Sound Enrichment Therapy involves listening to sounds to help focus your
attention away from your tinnitus. Together with your hearing professional,
you can find the sound therapy that gives you the most relief.

Meet three of the newest recruits to our Hearing Care team.
WHO'S
atLeightonsnew
Anna-Retha Rafferty
Our new Audiologist Anna-Retha studied speech
therapy and audiology at the University of
Stellenbosch in South Africa, before gaining a
wide range of experience here in the UK.
I worked in South Africa in a rural area
providing basic care and developing services
where there was none. I then moved to the
UK to broaden my horizons, and worked as
a locum fora couple of yearsin different
locations and departments. This was during
thebig change from analogue to digital
hearing aids, which gave me an amazing
opportunity to see how different counties and
hospitals managed and provided hearing care
throughout the UK. Ithen decided to work
permanently at a well-known LondonNHS
trust. As well as providing me with broad
experience, this gave me condence to use my
wide range of assessment skillsto deliver high
quality, individualisedcare to each patient.
"My number one priority has always been to
make a difference. Toimprove quality of life
for my patients, as well as their families.
Much of this relies on a good relationship
between the patient and the professional
looking after them. My approach has always
been patient centred, and Leightons' longer
appointment timesmean that there's always
enough time to listen. This makes it easierto
explore personal preferences and individual
requirementsand enable patients to really trial
different options. Being able to choose from
the best technology from the top hearing aid
manufacturers worldwide helps me support
patient choices and deliver a betterongoing
long-term hearing solution.
Natasha Bone
Having joined the Leightons team in 2013 as an
optical assistant obtaining a level two Diploma in
optical retailing skills in 2015, Natasha decided to
follow her passion and take on the challenge of
further education and a career change at the end
of last year. She recently passed her exams to
become a pre-registered hearing aid audiologist,
embodying Leightons' ethos of investing in
people and patient centred care. Transitioning
from optical to hearing, she benefits from the
full support of the Leightons team. Her main
focus has always been patient centred care, and
she has plenty of experience of working with
patients to improve their quality of life.
"Training to become a hearing aid audiologist
is one of the most challenging
yet rewarding things I have undertaken.
The incredible support and experience
extended from the Leightons Hearing Care
team enables me to follow my passion in
helping others by improving quality of life
through exceptional care and service.
With the time, support and resources available,
every day is a pleasure. I'm lucky
to have the time to listen to my patients'
concerns and questions regarding their
hearing, and to have the ability to offer
continued support and care to make sure we
meet all their needs."
Cathryn Brett
A member of the British Society of Hearing Aid
Audiologists and the Health & Care Professions
Council, Cathryn qualified as a Hearing Aid
Audiologist at Anglia Ruskin University,
Cambridge. Since then, she has built up a wealth
of valuable experience in the private sector.
I'm passionate about providing the best
possible solutions and support for those with
hearing loss.Working at Leightons means
I have the time to spend with each patient,
not only enabling me to carry out thorough
clinical testing but also to match the most
suitable state of the art hearing aids in line
with lifestyle and personal preferences.
It doesnt stop there I believe that on-going
care and support is essential to ensure that
each patient has a personal and tailor-made
after care service which will continue
to improve their quality of life.
I'm very committed to raising awareness of
the impact of hearing loss and have a special
interest in links between untreated hearing
loss and an increase in the risk of falls and
developing dementia.

What does hearing loss sound like?
That's a question that most people couldn't answer. Hearing loss has long been
misunderstood and stigmatised in our society, which is one of the main reasons
many people do not consider wearing hearing aids.
At Leightons we know how hearing loss can affect an individuals quality of life,
and we're determined to help remove the stigma associated with it. To help change
the way the public understands this important health issue, we decided to show
them what the world might sound like for people with hearing loss. We felt that the
best way to demonstrate this would be through film, and so we teamed up with
Sideways Productions to make a short video.
A Sideways look
A small but perfectly formed video production company based in Cornwall,
Sideways has lots of parallels with Leightons. Like us, they're an independent
company with a high focus on quality, service and innovation but most importantly
they also believe in the power of people, placing the customer at the centre to
everything that they do. As they say:
We want to work with brilliant people to help them to change the world.
Lights, camera, action!
On a bitterly cold December day, a team of our Audiologists took to the busy streets
of London to shoot the short film. The concept was to simulate how varying degrees
of hearing loss (mild, moderate and severe losses) could impact upon different sonic
environments. These are ordinary, everyday environments where those who have
entirely normal hearing may take their ability to hear well for granted.
To give the video a new dimension and to make it sound as realistic as possible,
we recorded using a binaural microphone, using a recording method that utilises
two microphones positioned inside the ears of an artificial human head.
The microphones interact with each other and the artificial ears and head

'colour' the sound in a realistic way, to create a three-dimensional, stereo
interpretation of sound, that when listened to via headphones is very similar
to how we hear the world in everyday life. At the end of a busy day of
filming, our audiologists then manipulated the sound in a recording studio to
accurately simulate the varying degrees of hearing loss.
Challenging misconceptions
Many people wrongly believe that hearing loss needs to be quite pronounced
before it can adversely affect an individuals ability to hear in these situations.
But that's definitely not the case, and as the video highlights, even the
mildest of hearing losses can blur important speech cues that people need
to accurately discriminate speech. Important consonants can blur or mesh
into the background noise making it extremely difficult to understand each
individual word within a conversation.
People often think that having a hearing loss just makes the world slightly
quieter, not understanding that the range of sounds that individual hears
can be completely different. In addition to the important information lost in
everyday speech, often the common environmental noises such as birdsong,
footsteps, or important signals and alerts have gradually subsided from an
individuals audible range over many years.
Sound in focus
The most common scenarios that people with hearing loss find
difficult are noisy or group environments. Hearing conversations on
busy streets, in shops and on public transport can be challenging at
the best times, even for those with no hearing loss. So our short film
focuses on four types of auditory scene:
1) The busy street, filmed in Westminster and Piccadilly Circus.
2) A noisy caf, filmed in a busy London coffee shop
3) Public transport, filmed on the London Underground.
4) Natural setting, filmed in Wandsworth Park.
Experience the results
We're delighted with the video, which is available to watch on our website at www.leightons.co.uk/hearing-care/hearing-loss/
and will work best if experienced through headphones. If you know anyone who would benefit from watching it then please feel
free to share it far and wide.
Behind the scenes We decided to pull back the curtain for just a few minutes and talk about what weve learned so far from producing this short film. Our behind the scenes film helps to shed more light on the subject of hearing loss and to reveal more about why and how we made it. Learn more at www.leightons.co.uk/hearing-care/hearing-loss/

Eating Right For Your Eyes Sake. Trust Me, Im a Dietitian it is not all about carrots and spinach!
By Helen Bond, State Registered Dietitian
I f theres one certainty in life, its that we dont stay young forever. But that doesnt mean that your eyes cant continue seeing well, no matter what date is on your birth certificate! A little care and attention to what you eat, and how you live your life, will go a long way in keeping your body and your eyes as healthy as they can be - whatever decade youre in.
Dont lose sight of the importance of sight
Most people would agree that their eyesight is the sense
they value more than all the rest, and yet many of us tend
to take good vision for granted - giving little thought to
the diet and lifestyle factors that can contribute to poor
eye health. According to recent research by specialists in
eye care Tha Pharmaceuticals, worryingly 60% of us are
unaware that the foods we eat can affect our eye health,
and one in five incorrectly believe that what we eat cant
affect our eye health at all. The truth is that nutrition can
play a key role in the health of your eyes, and paying
close attention to what you eat, and how much, is crucial
to maintaining healthy vision, and to ward off future
eye problems.
Age-related vision loss
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading
cause of central vision loss over the age of 50 an
estimated 600,000 Britons are living with the condition.
By 2020, it's predicted almost 700,000 of us will have
late-stage AMD. AMD can wreak havoc on your ability
to see faces, read, drive, watch TV, and move about safely,
and we still dont have a cure!
Its never too late to look after your eyes.
The good news is that protecting your eyes, inside and out,
is easier than you think - there are many things you can do
to keep them healthy and make sure you are seeing your
best throughout your lifetime.
A healthy balanced diet and lifestyle
Of course, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking,
keeping physically active and shielding your eyes from
exposure to too much sunlight is always a great place
to start to help protect your sight, and overall health for
the future.
On top of this, two decades of ongoing research, including
the Age Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS1 and 2) have
shown that good nutrition contributes to vision health.
Certain eye friendly nutrients may help delay the onset
and slow down the progression of eye conditions, such as
AMD, that become more common as we age.
Need for Nutrition
It is important to look at what food you are putting on
your plate - too much processed food, and faddy diets can
easily deprive your eyes of the balance of nutrients they
need to function well. Get back to basics and feed your
eyes with nutritious foods, in the right amounts plenty
of fruit and vegetables; starchy carbohydrates such as
wholegrain bread, rice, potatoes and pasta; meat, fish, eggs
beans and other non-dairy sources of protein; low fat milk
and dairy. Meanwhile keep fatty and sugary foods to an
occasional treat.
Pack your diet with antioxidants
We know antioxidant vitamins and minerals are important
weapons in the fight against optical ageing, by protecting
cells from damage caused by free radicals - highly reactive
substances created in your body by eating, breathing,
and by other factors such as air pollution and smoking.
Antioxidant examples include vitamin C (found in citrus
fruits, blackcurrants, berries, green leafy vegetables),
vitamin E (found in vegetable oils, avocado, nuts and
seeds), zinc (found in meat, poultry, shellfish, eggs, nuts
and seeds), selenium (found in brazil nuts, fish, shellfish,
meat, eggs) and copper (found in nuts, shellfish and offal).
-
Enjoy leafy greens and brightly coloured veggies
Your mother's advice that carrots can help you see in the
dark may have been more than a ploy to get you to eat more
vegetables. However, this root vegetable, along with sweet
potatoes, mango and papaya, is naturally rich in beta-carotene
(that the body converts to vitamin A) which contributes to the
maintenance of normal vision.
But you have to eat up your greens, too! Dark leafy green
vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli and peas are good
sources of lutein and zeaxanthin plant carotenoids are
naturally found as pigments in the macula (the centre of the
retina), and are thought to help absorb harmful wavelengths
of light that can damage the eye.
Reel in the oil-rich fish
Research has proven there are eye health benefits from eating
fish high in essential omega-3 fats, such as salmon, herring,
mackerel, andsardines. Other less potent forms of omega-3s
can be found in linseeds, flaxseeds, walnuts and chia seeds.
Other nutrients to look out for:
PhytochemicalsIts also worth looking at the naturally occurring plant
chemicals, such as the polyphenol resveratrol. Found naturally
in the skin of red grapes (and consequently red wine), but
also in peanuts and berries. Its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory
properties tallies with emerging evidence of the role of
resveratrol in eye health.
If, for any reason, you arent able to access (or just cant eat
enough) foods high in vitamins or minerals we have food
supplements available such as Macushield or Nutrof Total.

We're pleased to announce this year's chosen charities for the Leightons Foundation.
BACKsomethingGiving
H ere at Leightons we're committed to giving back to the community we serve, which is why in 2015 we created the Leightons Foundation. As well as the charities that individual branches and members of staff choose to support, each year our Foundation picks two designated charities; one optical and one audiological.
In 2015 we ran events throughout the year in support of Guide Dogs for the Blind and the
National Deaf Childrens Society. This year, we're pleased to announce that our members
have picked The Macular Society and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People as our chosen charities,
for whom a number of fundraising and awareness events will be taking place over this next

TIP for hearing aid wearers
Make sure your hearing aids are kept clean
and the microphones and receiver are
clear of debris. Sometimes people dont
realise that a very small amount of wax
can stop their hearing aid from working as
well as it should. To make sure, we always
advise everyone to get their hearing aids
overhauled, cleaned and re-tubed by
their hearing aid dispenser at least every
6 months.
inWORD
ABOUTyourearwaxa
L et's face it, talking about ear wax isn't everybody's idea of a comfortable conversation. But here at Leightons Hearing Care, the sticky stuff is part of life, and we're here to help you keep it under control. The first thing to understand is that ear wax is your ears natural protector, helping to
lubricate, clean and defend against bacteria and water. However, it's also important
to know that as well as looking unsightly, a build-up of ear wax can obstruct your
ear canal and potentially impair your hearing.
Keeping wax in check
Our experienced audiologists offer two methods of removing a build-up of ear wax,
combining our caring personal approach with up-to-the-minute technology.
1. Manual removalIf you have a small build-up of wax near your ear canal entrance, we can carefully
remove it by hand using an instrument like a Jobson Horne probe, which is a long
thin instrument with a hoop or spoon shape at the tip.
2. Water irrigationFor larger quantities of wax in the ear canal, as well as deep or compacted wax that
may not be large in quantity, we use a special micro water jet to expertly dislodge
and flush out the wax. This method is much more gentle and effective than the
syringing method which it has replaced.
Time for a clean pair of ears?
If you're concerned about your ear wax, and would like us to sort it out simply,
painlessly and discretely, please speak to one of our staff, who will be more than
happy to assist. Our prices for the removal of ear wax are 40 for one ear or 70
for both, irrespective of whether its a manual or irrigation method.

ZEISS quality assurance As one of the world's leading manufacturers of precision
optics, ZEISS combines technical expertise and product
innovation into exceptional visual experiences for millions
of spectacle wearers across the globe.
Better vision means precise vision, and this is exactly what
ZEISS has epitomised for more than 160 years. Every ZEISS
lens delivered to Leightons is supplied with a discreet semi-
visible laser engraving in the form of a Z trademark.
This guarantees the authenticity of your ZEISS precision
lenses and is proof of the exacting production controls
and stringent inspection standards that ensure superior
optical quality.
With a wide selection of spectacle lenses for patients
to choose from, ZEISS offers superior performance and
outstanding value to our patients, with lens solutions
tailored to meet their individual visual, behavioural,
lifestyle and budgetary needs.
Eyewear made for youEvery eye is unique, and at Leightons we do everything
to understand them. Each eye has its very own visual
properties and behaviour. Our dispensers need to know
not only what your new glasses have to achieve, but also
when and where they will be used. Thats why your eye
care journey starts with establishing your vision needs.
You will be questioned about your leisure activities,
and the situations in which you will use your new glasses,
for example: reading, driving, sporting activities or using
a computer.
Individuality is the word ZEISS offers a variety of spectacle lens designs that
incorporate ground-breaking technologies, based on their
extensive consumer vision research.
For example, the digital age has seen a rapid growth in the
use of smartphones, tablets and digital devices, resulting
in new and excessive demands being placed on our near
vision. ZEISS has responded to this challenge by modifying
the near viewing zone of its lenses. All ZEISS progressive
lenses include Digital Inside Technology within the design
to ensure the patients near working distance requirement
is perfectly considered. The result: strain-free and natural
vision when using digital devices and reading printed media.
No two faces are the same, and it is important that your
facial anatomy is considered, to fully benefit from the
optical performance of the lens. ZEISS progressive lenses
also feature FaceFit Technology and take into account
the way you look through the spectacle frame, and how
the frame sits on the nose and ears. The result: progressive
lenses tailored to the individuals facial parameters,
that provide optimum viewing performance and increased
frame choice for the wearer.
New ZEISS DriveSafe Lenses respond to the visual
challenges faced by drivers. This everyday lens design is
optimised for driving, and significantly reduces perceived
glare by up to 64%, to improve visual performance and
confidence for drivers - particularly in low light conditions.
The new ZEISS driving lens has been hugely embraced
by consumers everywhere and recently received special
recognition at the 2016 Optician Awards winning
Lens Product of the Year - one of the highest accolades
available within the optical profession.
Whatever lens type you require, ZEISS individualised
spectacle lenses have a unique distribution of prescription
power, harmonised over the entire lens surface - allowing
sharper, clearer and more relaxed vision.
What makes ZEISS lenses unique? In recent market research, 7 out of 10 spectacle wearers
expressed a strong interest in scratch resistant and durable
lenses to overcome the challenges that daily life presents.
Lens coatings transform standard plastic lenses into
everyday masterpieces. They make them scratch resistant,
dirt-repellent and easier to clean; benefits that make anti-
reflection coatings with multi-performance properties
an essential addition to spectacle lenses.
At Leightons, we have chosen ZEISS DuraVision Platinum
as the anti-reflective coating to equip your lenses with
the best protection possible. ZEISS DuraVision Platinum
features a unique coating technology comprising: anti-
reflective, anti-static, water-repellent and superior hard coat
components. These inherent properties help provide crystal
clear, better vision, with the reduction of annoying surface
reflections; and ensure your lenses are easier to clean and
stay cleaner for longer. But most importantly, they are
the first ZEISS plastic spectacle lenses with anti-reflective
coating to have the same, or even better, surface hardness
than comparable glass lenses.
Everyone is unique - and at Leightons the lenses we
provide are as individual as your unique DNA. Experience
personalised eye care for the first time - and let us help you
find the perfect personal ZEISS lens solution for the first time.
