Learning Without Limits: Moving away from “fixed ability” teaching in primary schools.

Conference notes The prevalence of “ability” grouping in primary schools That David Cameron when in opposition, stated that he wanted “to see

setting in every single school” That Nicky Morgan has stated her belief that streaming in secondary

schools should be mandatory. That there is now a body of evidence that points towards the majority of

children being disadvantaged by “ability” grouping. Those disadvantaged are often summer born children and those children

from poorer backgrounds. The excellent work of Executive Head Teacher of The Wroxham School in

Hertfordshire in creating the “Learning without Limits” project with Cambridge University.

Conference believes That there is a need for a wide-ranging discussion across the teaching

profession about pros and cons of grouping by “ability”. That Initial Teacher Training and in service training needs to equip

teachers with the tools and skills they need to be able to move away from “fixed ability” teaching.

Conference instructs the executive to Publicise academic research in to “ability” grouping in schools Include mixed “ability” teaching methods in its CPD programme. Further promote the work of Alison Peacock amongst NUT members
