Davon handelt
diese Publikation!
This publication is dedicated to those who value the new as a way of challenging
themselves to greater development. At the same time, we wish to acknowledge
the printing industry as a source of innovation. For centuries, people have pro-
fited from the new, ever-changing possibilities for communication that printing
has brought to cultural, intellectual, social, and business development.
Modern digital technology has pushed printing in new directions and has ope-
ned new horizons in communication. And that is the topic of this publication.

In the age of digital technology, print communication is achieving a new level
of quality and market penetration through digital printing. Individually created
materials are produced faster, more flexibly, and with more targeted content,
at industry-standard high levels of quality. Networking approaches permit print
and on-line media to be linked, so that communications and marketing cam-
paigns become interactive.
Communication (and especially print communication) turns out to be a deman-
ding creative task. The goal is making relevant content available in an up-to-
date, attractive, and individualized form. With digital printing, printed materials
continue to be indispensable as important carriers of information.
Innovation macht Druck – Druck schafft Innovation!
Druck-
verzichtbar.
The press of innovation causes innovation on press!

Printmedien im Fokus der Marktveränderungen Digitalisierung wird zum Schrittmacher
„Digitale“ Printmedien boomen
tarer Bestandteil digitaler Kommunikation.
Individualisie-
rungsmöglichkeiten (One-to-One-Printing) eleminieren Streuverluste und fördern
die interaktive Kommunikation mit Konsumenten.

Print in a changing market: Digitization is setting the pace
“Digital” printing is booming
The market for communication via “digital” printing is growing dynamically. The
value added by digital printing is expected to grow from around 30 billion Eu-
ros at present to 100 billion Euros by 2008. Digital printing is gaining momen-
tum due to the synergy of combining print and digital media. Print is becoming
as current as information from a database, and this makes digital printing a
fundamental component of digital communication. Thus, digital printing repre-
sents a critical part of coping with the structural changes in advertising. The
ability to individualize print (one-to-one printing) eliminates the waste of scat-
ter-shot campaigns and promotes interactive communication with consumers.

Interaktion ist Trumpf
Kommunikation lebt von Interaktion. Interaktion etabliert Dialoge. Digital produ-
Communication thrives on interaction. Interaction establishes dialog. Digital
printing supports the opportunity for interactive dialog.
Digital media production plays a key role: it links the enterprise directly with
its markets; it brings supply and demand into active dialog. It is clear that the
communications field is bursting from its decades-old structures. The whole
deck of cards is being re-shuffled. The tradition-bound printing industry must
learn that it can’t continue by viewing its business purely as a technology-based
production process. New technologies are leading to the development of new
application solutions for specific communication tasks. The communications
market must learn that digitization and networking mean more than just having
the latest PC hardware and software available. Digital printing, with its capacity
for producing variable content, is becoming the foundation for interactive in-
formation management. For all participants, this means that a new approach is
needed, and it must start within our heads.
Interactivity is the secret of success

Neuorientierung braucht neues Denken!
Successful implementation of digital printing is not so much a question of tech-
nical know-how. It is a question of laying the right conceptual and organizational
foundation. The full potential of digital printing can only be realized if the cor-
poration doing the marketing, and its creative and production service providers,
are networked and working together.
The ability to network with each other makes it possible to build a mutual un-
derstanding. Marketers, communications specialists, and creative production
service providers (as well as IT specialists) all have to be constructively involved
in order to break new ground.
Mar-
ketiers, Kommunikationsspezialisten, kreative Medienproduktionsdienstleister
A new approach requires a new way of thinking!

Don’t lose sight of the goal
Interactive linking of media production and corporate communications creates
the basis for successful marketing. Anyone who wants to embark on this stra-
tegy must be willing to call into question all previous marketing strategies. An
obstinate insistence on the formula, “This is the way we have always done it,” is
counter-productive and severely limits the development of the enterprise.
Thus, whoever cultivates interactive marketing (that is, the intelligent linking of
all media and communications tools) becomes a believable marketing partner,
and thereby creates the maximum customer orientation and customer satisfac-
tion. At the same time, communication geared toward interaction provides the
best means for building customer relationships. Only those who are engaged in
active dialog with their customers know what personal communications goals
those customers have. The ideal situation would be to fulfill the customers‘ wis-
hes even before they have stated them.

Roadmap für den Digitaldruck-Dienstleistungsmarkt
A roadmap for the digital printing services market
Steps 1 and 2 are transitional phases. The business of the future lies in the implementation of ACF,
which makes sense for all enterprises regardless of size. The goal is guaranteeing totally customer-
oriented communications using digital print media.
Three steps (or phases) emerge for businesses that are involved with digital
printing production and services:

Digital printing, combined with the architecture
of the “Automated Communication Factory” will
become the leading discipline in interactive print
communications. In the course of the past year,
the ACF Expert Team of the DigitalDruckForum
developed the ACF model and demonstrated how
to integrate corporate communications.

It is not that we have too much information, but rather too little relevant in-
formation. This fact forces the enterprise to re-think its approach. No longer is
maximum reach using mass media all that counts in marketing; rather, it is the
relevance and accuracy of targeting of the message. “Interaction” means the
interplay, the bi-directional influence, the alternating exchanges, and the back-
and-forth proceedings of individuals or groups. Carried over to the business
world and print communication, this means: The only material to be printed
is material tailored to the customer that helps her or him to make a purchase
decision.
In interactive marketing, the rules of information management take precedence
over marketing, advertising, PR, and media production. Information manage-
ment acquires an independent, supportive function, in that it makes available
(in addition to the information itself) the required means and channels for infor-
mation exchange. Thus it becomes a cross-functional capability within corporate

kette Awareness [Branding] – Response [Information] – Transaction [Kauf/Ver-
zu schaffen;
Wahrnehmung beim Konsumenten zu bewirken;
sicherzustellen.
management that helps make information completely and equally accessible.
Asymmetries in information access should be avoided. If this doesn’t happen,
a degree of uncertainty can arise in the market and within the customer base.
Therefore, the goal of marketing and brand management in the enterprise must
be to build trust. Brands have to create sympathy and trust.
Interactive marketing, through branding, can directly affect the degree of in-
formation asymmetry and can deploy suitable communications tools so that
maximum value creation is achieved. Through interactive marketing in conjunc-
tion with printed materials, the internet, as a networking system, is becoming
an integral tool. It binds together the steps of the process chain (Awareness
[Branding]—Response [Information]—Transaction [Buying/Selling]—Customer re-
lationship management [CRM]) into a powerful whole, linking the steps and the
different kinds of communication with each other.
Interactive marketing maximizes value creation. The linearity of the value-cre-
ation chain does not reflect the reality of the networked economy. Its emphasis
is really on increasing the efficiency of marketing by linking media and commu-
nications activities, namely:
- creating maximum efficiency in the (potential) relationship with the
customer through communications techniques that are precisely
dovetailed;
- making the consumer maximally likely to notice a product or service;
- securing brand presence in all relevant media.

Production, Marketing, Sales, Logistic, Service] müssen effizienter gestaltet
erweitert:
Interactive marketing creates a permanent presence and awareness of goods
and brands in a complex, heterogeneous media world. Brands must always be
viewed as dynamic, not static quantities. Real-time tools must be built to cre-
ate a brand orientation through dialog with customers. The primary elements
of value creation (purchasing, production, marketing, sales, logistics, service)
must be arranged more efficiently. And it is essential to develop new systems
for adapting brands and their communication strategies to changing customer
requirements. The value-creation chain is extended on three levels by interac-
tive marketing:
Level I Wertschöpfungsbereich mit Marketing, Kauf, Produktion, Vertrieb, Logistik, Service
value-creation domain of marketing, purchasing, production, sales, logistics, and service
new forms of communication via networking of above-the-line and below-the-line in both online and offline domains.

Consideration of advertising strategies must be expanded to include the inter-
action between market partners. Today’s market practice gives support to this
expansion of interactive marketing. Marketing experts recognize that the con-
temporary model for success lies in addressing customers via whatever channel
they prefer. In this way, companies are able to increase sales two- to four-fold,
and to increase customer retention by half. It is all a matter of the best inter-
play of the tools. In particular, those enterprises that are quickest to combine
new techniques with old methods will be able to lock in important competitive
advantages. The coordinated application of advertising, sales, and service in the
initiation, the development, and the intensification of business communications
is decisive for success.
Multi-channel strategies in information management are found to be particu-
larly useful for marketing. But it is important to recognize that belief in techno-
logy as a cure-all does not work. It is essential not to displace what exists with
something new, but to view new methods of sales and communication as com-
plementary, in order to make marketing more effective. In business, evolution is
far more typical than revolution. Real revolutions in markets are extremely rare.
Evolution shows itself in greater time requirements, cumulative effects, gradual
shifts, a certain continuousness, and predictability.
Interactive marketing stands for these values and meets the standards of lea-
ding business and marketing experts. Interactive marketing does not re-invent
the wheel. It embodies the doctrine of linking all relevant media and forms of
communication with each other. For business, it offers undreamed-of possibi-
lities for combining and using, effectively and efficiently, the old and new, the
digital and analog worlds, all in order to better serve customer requirements.

The key outcome: interactive marketing does not require a big investment in
technology and personnel. Rather, like a master chef, it makes use of the ingre-
dients at hand to make a brilliant statement in competitive and market matters
via dishes featuring new taste combinations.
Digital printing offers marketing an ideal tool for establishing a dialog with mar-
kets and customers. In combination with online media, individualized digital print
provides the basis for powerful, cost-optimized, and lasting communication.
In Kombination mit Online-Me-

“Mark E. Ting: in pursuit of Effi Shintzy” demonstrates what “Interactive
Marketing” is all about. “Our aim at a conference was to come up with a theme
for the main presentation of the day that could convey a complex, specialized
topic in a creative way,” explains Andreas Weber, project manager and coordi-
nator of “In pursuit of Effi Shintzy.” He was not so much emphasizing his role as
he was giving a pat on the back to the design group “Merkwürdig.” The client, an
online marketing provider, wanted to set the ball rolling: he was to speak on the
opportunities and possibilities for “Interactive Marketing” at the Munich Media
Days, one of the leading trade shows for experts in media and communicati-
ons. Instead of a traditionally-structured PowerPoint presentation, he wanted
an effective, interactive format that would convey the required content, but in a
way that the audience would not forget—without overdoing the “entertainment”
aspect of the presentation. Attendees were to come away with a comprehensive
sense of the importance of interactive marketing, as well as the way it is actu-

Es mussten also zwei Protagonisten her, die so-
ally done. The idea of a love story came naturally, Weber explained. “Marketing
is about ‘bringing together.’ The success of a brand at ‘getting together’ with
customers, in a way that sells products or services, is really only possible with
the right kind of marketing. So there had to be two protagonists, and they had to
be technically feasible and likeable. Cartoon sequences, programmed in Flash,
needed to be embedded in the PowerPoint presentation.
This approach was unusual because it was so demanding, and it was therefore
not usually employed for single-use presentations, according to the Merkwürdig
group (alias Nadine Bendzulla, Jennifer Harth, and Kai Staudacher). The presen-
tation was designed with reusability in mind—it would provide a basis to expand
the “love story” theme farther at a later time.

In less than four weeks of joint effort and constant dialog with their client, An-
dreas Weber and the designers developed the characters Effi Shintzy and Mark
E. Ting. The play on words in the selection of these names was designed to
convey one of the central tasks of “interactive marketing” from the very start.
The depiction of Effi and Mark was an equally conscious choice. The two trendy
cartoon figures were designed to make as many audience members as possible
identify with them (not a small factor in the success of a project like this one):
on the one hand, the feminine Effi, cute and self-confident; on the other, the
dynamic Mark, a smart entrepreneur type, iron-willed and successful.
The actual content of the presentation could thus be portrayed symbolically:
Mark E. Ting, with his undying love for Effi Shintzy, tried four completely diffe-
rent approaches to win over his beloved. These approaches represent the four
key pillars of marketing: Mark tried to impress Effi by offering a bunch of roses
(“branding”), and showing off his house, car, and yacht (“information”), but in

vain. The third element, “transaction,” was illustrated when Mark, begging on his
knees, offered his heart to his soul-mate. Mark took the fourth pillar, “customer
relationship management,” a little too literally when he physically tied himself
to Effi. But it was only the combination of all four disciplines—interactive marke-
ting—that finally allowed him to win Effi.
The 15-minute presentation also had a serious aspect, however. There was also
a case study that demonstrated for the audience of experts the practical imple-
mentation of the rules and principles of interactive marketing, as promoted by
the online marketing provider. For this segment, a TV (which had been merely
a decorative element in an earlier scene) occupied the foreground and became
the vehicle for detailed information about a real project of the online marketing
providers marketing partner. And, not to neglect the spirit of optimal customer
“tie-in,” a sticker with the key visual of the presentation was created for distri-
bution after the speech.

Ultimately, the “Mark & Effi” project itself developed into an “interactive mar-
keting” product. A week before the presentation, the customer expressed the
wish to have a printed booklet produced. It would be based on the cartoon and
would help non-specialists to understand what underlies interactive marketing.
An additional stroke of brilliance was the idea of having costumes in the style
of “Schwellköpfe” (traditionally part of the Fassnacht celebration in Germany)
constructed practically overnight portraying Effi and Mark. Actors wearing them
wandered around the conference center handing out booklets and stickers.
Asked about an overall name for such a project, Andreas Weber had a quick
answer. “For me, this kind of thing is ‘intelligent infotainment,’ able to convey
technical information for communications and media professionals in an origi-
nal way.”

Digital Economy perfekt an.
The “Automated Communication Factory” (ACF) is a new interactive busi-
ness model helping enterprises putting theory into practice, overcoming
today’s communication challenges with the aim of reaching the leading edge
in tomorrow’s economy. ACF is the key instrument for print center manage-
ment and a major milestone in the printing industry.
The new challenge for the future is the individualization of communication.
Communication is becoming digital. Especially via fast Internet access, we are in
the position to access information worldwide and of course procure from every-
where. The new paradigm shift: think global act local. It allows to all enterprises
to listen to their customer and strengthen the communication with them. Lis-
tening to customers (via customer voice management) is a key element in each
enterprise to be successful in the future. It is no longer the enterprise dictating
his offering but individual who will choose there required product or solution in
a global market.

Gleichzeitig
rate-Communications-Manager. Dessen Verantwortlichkeit liegt in der Koordina-
Business to business, business to individual communication will be streamlined.
A global communication strategy by a corporate communication manager will
be implemented in each enterprise. The corporate communication manager has
to understand and continuously measure the current communication impact on
the market and have the necessary tools to make beneficial changes.
What’s new?
Our society has become knowledge-hungry and shaped by the Internet, and this
requires a new approach to information distribution. Interactive multi-channel
and multi-platform concepts are necessary for success, in order to carry on an effi-
cient and effective dialog with customers and business partners. ACF represents
a communications architecture with the complete set of tools required to automa-
te, optimize, and control multi-channel multi-media, bi-directional communica-
tions with customers and partners. ACF doesn’t mean a complete restructuring
of an enterprise. ACF is re-engineering of corporate communications.
ACF Implementation
The implementation of an Automated Communication Factory doesn’t mean re-
volution but evolution of the enterprise. A successful implementation relies on
a thorough understanding of:
1. Current business processes
2. Requirement for information
3. Use of information
Misunderstanding enterprise requirements and processes can be costly. The
first step if not already done is the implementation of the interactive corporate

Service.

communications manager. His responsibility is to coordinate and integrate all
corporate communications to customer and market under the framework of a
corporate communications strategy.
The second step consists of choosing a cross business-units implementation
team under the guidance of the interactive corporate communications manager.
Part of this team are the IT manager or his delegate, the development manager
and the production manager, the product managers, a representative of the sa-
les force and a representative of the service community.
Based on the corporate requirements they select the necessary business pro-
cesses, which may be required by:

Print- und digitale Me-
dientechnologien arbeiten hierbei Hand in Hand.
with information that focuses on his or her specific interests. The most sensible
way to get started with individualized communication is via so-called “permis-
sion marketing”: the customer agrees to enter into a dialog with the company.
This represents a serious level of interest by the customer, and the company
can safely build up customer profiles without running afoul of data-protection
laws. With time, these profiles can be steadily enriched and can become the ba-
sis for totally customer-oriented communications. The company makes relevant
content available to the customer, who receives it either automatically or on
request. Print and digital media work hand in hand in this process.
Permission marketing includes both existing customers and new ones. The “bait”
is not the product being sold; rather it is the content, which ties product features
to customer needs. To do this, the company must assemble the best possible
understanding of each customer and offer the best possible options for inter-
acting. One business that is growing explosively at the moment is intelligent
analysis of customer information: marketing specialists explore customer accu-
mulated customer data using sophisticated software tools, in order to segment
customers into groups. Individual communication and marketing campaigns (in-
volving not just specific product offers, but even individualized pricing) can then
be designed based on the segmentation. This kind of customer-oriented com-
munication can be very powerful. Experts estimate that the world-wide value of
individualized communication will reach 100 billion Euros per year.

The role of the implementation team is to evaluate current offerings and solu-
tions available on the market and choose the appropriate solutions, which fit
best the enterprise requirements. It is also important to realize that people have
limited processing power and time.
The third step consists of a phased implementation of the chosen business pro-
cesses. To get the best from the implementation it is necessary to plan it care-
fully and include the people required, the processes that should be followed and
the benchmarks to measure success at each stage.

Doch in der Praxis geschieht wenig, was bislang
aus Kundensicht das Prädikat „wertvoll“ verdient. Viele Kommunikationsprofis
Digital technology allows completely individualized communication—a business
worth many billions of Euros for timely management of communications.
For more than 10 years, businesses and individuals have had digital technology
and tools available that allow them to enter into personal dialogs with each
other. Every day, new solutions appear on the market: CRM, data mining, one-to-
one marketing, Web-to-print, and variable-data printing all have great promise.
But in practice, there is not much happening that a customer would say deser-
ves to be called “valuable.”
Many communication professionals pay attention only to what can be done
technically and what consultants tell them, rather than listening to customers
and their individual requirements. For the most part, corporations don’t go bey-
ond the salutation in their personalization efforts: the name and the address
change, but everything else stays the same. But what the corporation really
needs to do is to establish a line of communication that provides the customer

Supply and demand
But the monetary value alone is not the key issue. Even more important is the
improvement in factors such as customer satisfaction, customer acquisition at
low cost, and customer allegiance to brand and image. This is how you approach
the ultimate goal of marketing and market leadership: the products offered and
the customer demand must correspond exactly, if you want to assure the future
of the enterprise via success in the market.
Automated Communication as a main target
It is worth bearing in mind that no single technology provider, now or even in the
future, can offer “the” solution that an enterprise needs for its individualized
communications. The Digital Printing Forum, an independent industry initiati-
ve, developed the concept of the “Automated Communication Factory” in the
course of a study it undertook. ACF refers to an architecture that presents the
scenario of enterprise/individual communications as an integrated process, and
describes the options for implementation. Print media play a central role in ACF.
All forms of print media are important in customer communication—from bro-
chures, direct mail pieces, newspapers, and magazines, all the way to packaging
(which is just now being discovered as a tool for interactive marketing).
Still, statistics about billion-Euro markets and new technologies are one thing;
what the user wants is often a different (and decisive) thing. In cooperation with
researcher Stefan Sick, the Digital Printing Forum is currently conducting an ex-
pert panel discussion. Stefan Sick presented the initial results of his ground-bre-
aking studies at the WHU in Koblenz and the University of Cologne, based on a
survey (by the Demographic Market Research Institute in Allensbach) of a repre-

sentative sample of 2,000 citizens from throughout Germany. The topic: factors
that determine customer acceptance of an individualized daily newspaper.
The issue to be clarified was what degree of investment (in money, time, and
mental energy in making product selections) a consumer would be willing to
make in order to get an individualized newspaper. The results, which are to be
published throughout mid 2004, will not be prematurely revealed here. But this
much can be said now: there is surprisingly strong interest in individualization,
especially among readers under age 35—even taking into account the higher
price and the extra mental effort. Almost 20% of those surveyed had a positive
assessment of individualized printed products. This means that individualized
communications involving print media provides a starting point for reaching
younger consumers in particular. That should spur communication professionals
to actively deal with today’s customer requirements and the new application
possibilities of print media. Individualization of communication is becoming the
most powerful force in all of business!
