St Francis Xavier Primary School
We are called to provide an exemplary Catholic Education.
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
With only three newsletters before the end of the year I wish to share with you the work that staff have been undertaking and some information about 2020. As a school we have been refining our collective shared belief. Our vision statement has been refined into 7 words; #Christcentredchildfocusedlifelonglearners This hashtag encapsulates our unwavering focus and our collective direction. But what do we mean by these seven words? As educators and parents, we need to equip children with the essential skills and knowledge required to successfully participate and contribute to a global world. We need effective communicators, critical thinkers, problem solvers and active learners. The word cloud was developed by our expert staff and will assist the refinement of our teaching practices. Literacy and numeracy will continue to be the foundation of our curriculum whilst teachers extend the boundaries of our learning to encourage students to take risks as self-directed, independent learners. It is an exciting direction that will develop a dynamic approach to creating a culture of learning at St Francis Xavier Primary. As the term progresses, I look forward to sharing with you more about some unique partnerships that St Francis Xavier will be involved in 2020. Leaving Families 2020 With several families relocating, opportunities to join St Francis Xavier’s vibrant learning community in multiple year levels exist. With sibling discounts and fee concessions Catholic Education is an affordable option for all families. If you know of any friend that would benefit, please let them know that opportunities exist. If additional families are relocating, please let our administration know to ensure a seamless transition for your child. God Bless

MISSION WEEK Last week as a school we celebrated Mission Week. The focus for the week was the children of Ghana. Many live in poverty and on the streets, especially those with disabilities, or have to work as child labour at a young age. Students also learnt about the work of Sr Stan at the Nazareth Home for God’s Children to help and support the children of Ghana. Students throughout the week also had opportunities to pray for Sr Stan and the children of Ghana and to raise money for Catholic Mission to help Sr Stan.
We started the week with a prayer service all together Monday morning. There were several fundraising events organised by different year levels throughout the week. On Monday the Pre-primary classes organised a crazy hair day and the year 5 classes a crazy sock day for a gold coin donation.
The year 4 classes held a raffle for jars of lollies, while the year 6 classes held raffles for books and games the students donated. This term the year 3 classes are learning about measurement, so they put their skills to the test and made honey joys to sell. The year ones held a colouring in competition. It was great to see so many students get involved in the fundraising by coming up with ideas and organising the activities. The year 2 classes came up with something very unusual. Their plan was to tape Mr Patrick to a pole. Students were able to buy a length of tape to help out.
Well done Mr Patrick for being a good sport. Our last event was a Saints dress up for All Saints Day on Friday. Students were asked to research a saint and dress as them or with symbols related to that saint. Students donated a gold coin to dress up.
Fr Bernard came on Friday morning to view our saint parade and award prizes for his favourite dress ups. Overall as a school over the week we raised $1250.50 to go towards Catholic Mission to help the children and Sr Stan in Ghana.

Media Arts We are very fortunate to be able to offer Media Arts to our students from K-6. In media arts, students both make and respond to media works.
“Making” media involves learning technical production skills such as how to frame and compose a shot, how to record sound, how to edit image and sound tracks, and how to add visual and sound effects.
Such skills are important for for recognising how media works are constructed. They also enable students to use media to communicate and tell stories – and complete assignments, as many students increasingly use digital media to do.
“Responding” involves analysing media works with the goal of assisting students to become active and ethical media creators, users and consumers. Students learn about how media works - including, ideally, social media. They learn about key issues and practices such as copyright and the ethics of sharing media works and personal information online.
The need for our children to develop competencies and skills to use and understand digital media has never been greater. Many children informally develop capabilities with digital media content and devices, but we must be wary of assuming that any child is a “digital native” and does not need formal education in digital technologies, how the media work, or the ethics and implications of sharing and communicating via social media.
Competencies, skills and understandings need to be taught, learned, and practiced.
Every young person needs to know how to participate creatively, safely and ethically in digital media culture. Only media arts teaches students how to engage with and understand the media through making and responding to media.
Only media arts teaches children and young people how to creatively tell stories and communicate with digital images, sounds and texts.

Library News Last Friday and Saturday I attended the "Celebrate National Reading Conference" at the Literature Centre in Fremantle. The conference was fantastic, enjoying two days of inspiration and insights with other library professionals, teachers and book lovers. Not only did we get to enjoy engrossing sessions on key issues in Australian Children's Literature with the Authors, we were also able to view superb exhibitions of original artwork, purchase books and signing opportunities. The authors that attended were: Shaun Tan (Vic) - The Rabbits, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer Suburbia, The Arrival, The Lost Thing, Cicada & Tales from Inner City. Stephen Michael King (NSW) - Mutt Dog, Leaf, A Bear and a Tree, Snail and Turtle are Friends, The Duck and the Darklings, Three. Glenda Millard (Vic) - The Kingdom of Silk series, Isabella's Garden, For all Creatures, Lightning Jack, the Tishkin series. Lisa Shanahan (NSW) - Bear and Chook by the Sea, Big Pet Day, Hark, It's Me, Ruby Lee, The Grand, Genius Summer of Henry Hoobler. Felice Arena (Vic) - Andy Roid series, Sporty Kids series, Specky Magee series, The Boy and the Spy, Fearless Frederic. Ronojoy Ghosh (NSW) - Ollie and the Wind, No Place Like Home, I'm Australian Too, Dear Grandpa, Are You My Bottom, Charlie. Leila Rudge (NSW) - The Whole CaBoodle, Duck for a Day, No Bears, Ted, Gary, Let Me Sleep Sheep. Dianne Wolfer (WA) - Nanna's Button Tin, In the Lamplight, The Lighthouse Girl, The lighthouse Boy, The Shark Caller, The Dog with Seven Names.
Mark Greenwood also had his new book "The Book Of Stone" suitable for Yr 3 - 6, not yet released, but I could purchase this early and I nabbed him while he was having a refreshment to sign our copy. He will be attending our school in 2020. Throughout the week I will catalogue new books and display them ready for borrowing. This includes titles we did not have that have been signed by the authors. Please encourage your children to browse and loan this fabulous collection.

The canteen relies very much on volunteer help to make the canteen a success. The tasks required by our volunteers are basic but essential for things to run smoothly and we only need your help from 9am to 1pm.
If you can spare a few hours on just one or more days throughout the term, we would love to hear from you. Email your details and preferred days/dates to [email protected] or call 9921 1711
Children also love to see their parents, grandparents and carers at recess and lunch
Lost Property Our Lost Property box is full to the brim with unnamed hats, jackets, shoes, lunchboxes and drink bottles. If you feel your child has lost an item please come on in and take a look. At the end of each term the items that have not been collected are sent of the Uniform shop and St Vincent DePaul. Reduce lost property by naming school supplies and labelling belongings – this ensures their safe return. Contact Details The school requires all families to keep us updated if there are changes to personal information. If your home address, email address, phone number or child's medical details have recently changed, please contact the School on 9211 711 or email: [email protected]

P & F News On Friday evening the P & F held a Blokes & Kids Movie night in the undercover area at the school. Everyone enjoyed feasting on popcorn and had a sausage sizzle for tea while watching Halloween You Story and Goosebumps. Thanks goes to the dads for helping and to Mark Lamb for organising the movie.
