The beautiful month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. The official Feast Day of the Rosary was October 7, introduced by Pope St. Pius V in the year 1571 to commemorate the miraculous victory of the Christians in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. Likewise, the Church in the United States also recognizes October as Respect Life Month, directing our attention to the fact that we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end. We reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life and consider how we can impact a culture of life. The Rosary is a Scriptural prayer in which we meditate on the mysteries in the life of Jesus. We ask Mary to intercede with Jesus on our behalf and for those who are in greatest need of mercy. The Rosary and Respect Life month go hand in hand. In fact, one of the greatest ways that we can impact a culture of life is through prayer and especially the prayer of the Rosary. If you don’t have a Rosary of your own, make sure to pick one up on your way out of Church for the next couple of weekends.

Prayer for Respect for Life Dear Father, Creator of all Life, Please give those who are faced with the temptation of abortion, the support, courage, and grace they need to choose life for their child. Help all who have participated in choosing abortion come to know your healing and generous mercy. I ask that you grant those involved in
performing or promoting abortions a conversion of heart and the courage to cease their involvement. Please open my own heart to follow whatever way you are calling me to help build a culture of life. —Amen.
The Power of Prayer This is a story a woman shared with a pro-life counselor months after her experience. In the second trimester of her pregnancy, she had approached an abortion clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, determined to have an abortion. Crossing the sidewalk and nearing the door of the abortion clinic, she felt her baby kick within her womb. At that same moment, she looked up to witness an older woman walking up and down the sidewalk praying the rosary. She later told the counselor that at that moment, she knew what she was about to do was wrong. She left the clinic and went home. She chose to keep and love the precious life God had given to her. While this experience was very concrete, there are many more stories that remain hidden, where women have changed their minds after they were set on having an abortion.

Bonfire: Fire, Faith and Fellowship As the warm weather of summer turns into the cool nights of fall, our world in Western Pennsylvania begins to look a little different. Like the weather, ministry begins to look different as well at Triumph of the Holy Cross, especially our youth ministry program. Starting last month at Father Michael’s prompting, we launched our first Bonfire: Fire, Faith and Fellowship. The night, which was hosted at Saint Thomas à Becket Church, was a beautiful night. There was a warm bonfire (obviously!), corn hole, can jam, music, and lots of good food and snacks! Father Michael gave a talk and then towards the end of the night we transitioned to the chapel for a few minutes of adoration and benediction. Thanks to the fantastic team of adult helpers, I have great hope for this being a successful event going forward for our youth. There will be another Bonfire scheduled for the 17th of this month from 7:00-8:30PM. I highly encourage all high school kids of our parish to come out and enjoy the night. Change an Effect In two weeks, on the weekend of October 23/24, we celebrate World Mission Sunday. World Mission is repeated each year on the third or fourth weekend of October. It’s a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. This year’s theme is: “We cannot speak about what we have seen and heard!” A second collection will be taken at all the Masses that weekend. Please be as generous as possible. Know that your personal sacrifice truly does “change an effect!” Thank you in advance for your spiritual and monetary gifts.

We Believe in Jesus Dear Friends, Of the many reasons why we are Catholic, at the core of it is that we believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the center of all that we do and who we are – and put simply enough, if you don’t believe that Jesus is who He said He was, then you shouldn’t be Catholic. The question then is who did Jesus say He was. The Catechism gives us the answer that “Jesus Christ is true God and true man, in the unity of His divine person; for this reason, He is the one and only mediator between God and men” (480). In the book, Why We’re Catholic, Trent Horn gives three reasons as to why we should believe this controversial statement. 1) Jesus believes He was God, and we can trust Him, 2) we can trust the New Testament Documents, and 3) the first Christians worshipped Jesus as God. The last point always packs a large punch for me because these were people who knew Jesus personally and witnessed His miracles. Not only did these people know Jesus and spread His message, but they also went to their deaths, and often brutal ones, to defend the claim that Jesus was the God Man who rose from the dead. Above all else, like the first Christians, we are Catholic because we believe that Jesus Christ is God, that He became incarnate, and that His mission was to save you and me from our sins and lead us to His Father.

The Month of the Holy Rosary … As a prayer for peace, the Rosary is also, and always has been, a prayer
of and for the family. The family that prays together stays together. The Holy Rosary, by age-old tradition, has shown itself particularly effective as a prayer that brings the family together. Individual family members, in turning their eyes towards Jesus, also regain the ability to communicate, to show solidarity, to forgive one another and to see their covenant of love renewed in the Spirit of God. Some contemporary families may have difficulty at times in communicating; seldom managing to come together. On the rare occasions when they do, they may be spent watching television. To return to the recitation of the family Rosary, means filling daily life with very different images—the mystery of salvation, the image of the Redeemer, and of His most Blessed Mother. The family that recites the Rosary together reproduces something of the atmosphere of the household of Nazareth, placing Jesus at its center. They share His joys and sorrows, they place their needs and their plans in His hands, they draw from Him the hope and the strength to go on. Make this a practice in your home.

Music can inspire people to change, to forgive, to live a joyful life, to love more and to pray better. It expresses things that we are unable to express in words alone. We need all voices. All ages and experiences are welcome. If you haven’t sung since High School Choir, come join us! If you are in High School, parish choirs are great places for you to improve your sight-reading skills and become a leader. Singers are needed for weekend liturgies, as well as for funeral masses. Diocese of Pittsburgh launches Pittsburgh Catholic magazine
News Release: October 1, 2021 The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is launching Pittsburgh Catholic magazine. It is designed to inform and enrich the faith of Catholics in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence and Washington counties. The magazine, to be published
every other month, will be mailed free of charge to 120,000 parishioner households across the diocese. “I am pleased to offer this new instrument for evangelization and to build unity among local Catholics,” said Bishop David Zubik, the publisher. “It will share stories of local Catholics who are living out their faith, as well as feature columns on spirituality, family life and other topics,” he said. “My goal is for this magazine to encourage readers to learn, love and live Jesus more and more each day. ” Pittsburgh Catholic magazine builds on the 176-year legacy of the Pittsburgh Catholic weekly newspaper, which ceased publication in March 2020, due to long- running financial struggles heightened by the COVID pandemic. The new publication has received initial funding from Our Campaign for The Church Alive! It will receive ongoing support through the diocesan central administration. The debut October/November issue was mailed Wednesday, September 29. Parishioners who do not receive a copy and would like one can contact their parish to make sure they’re registered. Bereavement Group A monthly Bereavement Support Group meeting is held on the 2nd Thursday of every month from 10:30AM to Noon in Pius X Hall, Room 107. Pilgrimage Trips Return Catholics with a pent-up desire to travel abroad can renew their faith while doing so, as they sail across the Sea of Galilee, celebrate the 102nd birthday of St. John Paul II in his hometown, or attend the famous Oberammergau Passion play. The Pittsburgh Catholic is sponsoring three pilgrimages in 2022: The Holy Land with auxiliary Bishop William Waltersheid, Jan. 14-24; Poland with Bishop Waltersheid May 12-20; and Oberammergau and the hometown of Blessed Francis Seelos with Bishop David Zubik, Sept. 18-27. Cloverleaf Food Bank The Cloverleaf Area Ecumenical Assistance Program (CAEAP, or simply the "Cloverleaf Food Bank") is an association of faith-based organizations in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh who are committed to serving families in our communities, regardless of their religious affiliation, who are in need of food or other forms of assistance.
