Densoband is totallycompatible with mastic asphaltand high performance bitumenmembranes. It has manyapplications in conjunction withmastic asphalt roofing andpaving. In consequence,Guaranteed Asphalt useDensoband on all Guaraflexpolymer modified asphaltroofing and paving projects.

At the Swan Centre car parkDensoband was used as aflexible fillet, sandwiched

between the high performancemembrane at the junctionbetween the horizontal andvertical waterproofing planes. The flexibility of Densobandallows structures to move atthis crucial junctionwithout cracking.

Densoband is a polymermodified bitumen strip which isapproved by the Department ofTransport in the Manual ofContracts 7th Edition, for usein asphalt wearing course joints

for asphalt and asphalt toconcrete interface, as analternative to the previouslycommonly used bitumen. It isalso approved by the BritishAirports Authority.

Because water, salts, pollutants and weed seeds etccannot penetrate the sealedjoint, it remains unaffectedby extremes of temperatureand any consequentialdeterioration.

Archco-Rigidon 703D SystemProtects a Dangerous GoodsBund Area in Kalgoorlie

Coatings - Concrete bund protection

After many meetings and muchdeliberation with engineers(structural, mechanical andcivil), architects, asset ownersand government authorities, itwas determined that the ArchcoRigidon 703D System wouldbe used.

The contractor Monadelphouswas selected to carry out thewhole project as they were theonly approved applicator in thegoldfields region. However, many obstacles were still tocome before the project couldcommence. In September 2005,engineers had concerns that thesoil structure was not compatiblefor the bund to be built on sotonnes of soil from SouthAustralia (around 2000 kms

Early in January 2005 contact was made from Messer’s GHD andAustralian National Rail with the requirement to provide protectionto a Dangerous Goods Bund area, about to be built in the WesternAustralian Gold Fields.

away) was brought in forthe project.

The soil was compacted, theconcrete was poured and curedfor 28 days. The next stage wasthe application of the ArchcoRigidon 703D System but thiswas delayed because of sixweeks of constant rainfalls inKalgoorlie, a rarity in themiddle of the Australian desert.Eventually, the rain subsided, further expert inspections weremade and work resumed in June2006. The 360 square metrebund was successfully completedin July 2006.

Archco-Rigidon Coatings SolvePipe Lining Problem atHa Dong Thermal Power Plant

Linings - Power plant, sea water pipe

When the original epoxy lining on the sea water pipe at theHa Dong Thermal Power Plant started to peel the deterioration ofthe lining became accelerated due to the water flow in the pipe.Urgent action had to be taken to prevent rapid corrosion of the pipedue to the combination of the damaged lining and the highlycorrosive sea water running through it.

To rectify the problemengineers at the plant specifiedthe use of Archco-Rigidon,Archcoat 402B as a replacementfor the original epoxy lining.

After the complete removal ofthe old epoxy lining theArchcoat 402B was applied tothe pipe to a thickness of 1mm.

The Archcoat 402B lining isparticularly suitable forimmersed conditions and isresistant to a wide range ofchemicals making it the idealchoice for this application.

After the new lining had beeninstalled the pipe was soon backin service much to the delight of

the plant engineers who werevery satisfied with the newArchco-Rigidon lining system.

Archco-Rigidon Rigspray usedto line Korea Gas Corporation’sSea Intake Pipeline

Linings - Gas Corporation’s sea water intake pipe

The Korean Gas Corporation recently chose Archco-rigidon Rigsprayto line their sea water intake pipeline. Rigspray was chosen for itsprotective qualities which are particularly effective in marineenvironments.

The Rigspray lining wasapplied in a single coat to theinternal surfaces of the sea waterintake pipeline to a thickness of1mm.

Rigspray is a long lasting, single coat, anti-corrosionsystem that can be used on allstructures and pipework whereprotection against severe marineenvironments is required

The Korean Gas Corporationwere so pleased with thefinished application that theyhave specified Rigspray to beused on all new equipmentinstalled at the plant.

Archco-Rigidon Rigspray liningused to protect NuclearPlant Debris Filter

Linings - Nuclear Power Plant Debris Filter

The Young Kwang Nuclear Plant was experiencing major problemswith the rubber linings in its debris filters. The linings were fallingoff and after fixing them back on again several times, engineerschanged the design, instead specifying lining the filters with Rigspray.

Archco-Rigidon Rigspray waschosen because of its impressivecorrosion preventioncharacteristics and speed andsimplicity of application.

The Rigspray was applied tothe internal surfaces of the filtersto a thickness of 1.5mm and thecompleted linings are nowconsidered a great success asthey have completely resolvedthe difficult problem.

Denso Protection for Canada’sBanks and Stock Markets

Corrosion Prevention - Protecting Buried Pipelines

markets and to its day to daybanking operations. Having acontinuous supply of electricityto this area is extremely vital.Having a gas pipeline runningunderneath this electrical sourcemakes the prospect of protectingboth energy sources somewhatof a challenge.

Denso North America wasasked by Enbridge Gas andHydro One to provide optimumprotection for several hundredfeet of a 30inch diameter gasline located directly underneaththe main electricitytransmission lines. Enbridge Gas, who operates thepipeline, has one of the largestnatural gas distribution networksin Canada. Hydro One is thelargest electricity supplier anddistributor of power within theprovince. Both parties agreed

that the coatings selected wouldbe used as a safeguard againstpossible lightning strikes thatcould potentially arch from the

transmission line to the gas pipeand cause a huge explosion.

After extensive independenttesting of several manufacturers’epoxies and tape wrappingsystems, it was agreed by bothenergy supply companies thatDenso Protal 7250 and Densopol60 be used to protect thiscrucial area.

Engineered Coatings Ltd., whoare a local approved applicatorof our Protal 7250 epoxy werecontracted to do the work. Thisinvolved spraying 60mils ofProtal 7250 on the pipe and thentriple wrapping Densopol 60over the epoxy after it had cured.

The project and scope of thiswork went extremely well overa period of several weeks of hotsummer weather. Upon thecompletion of the entire project, all involved were confidentthat even if we experiencedsignificant lightning storms, electronic information wouldcontinue to flow withoutincidence thanks to theprotection offered by theproducts manufacturedby Denso.

Emergency crude oil is storedin the Strategic PetroleumReserve in salt caverns. Createddeep within the massive saltdeposits that underlie most ofthe Texas and Louisianacoastline, the caverns offer thebest security and are the mostaffordable means of storage, costing up to 10 times less thanaboveground tanks and 20 timesless than hard rock mines.

Due to the highly corrosiveenvironment, Denso’s PetrolatumTape products have been usedfor many years for corrosionprotection at all 5 locations in avariety of applications.

DOE Intake Structure Protectedwith Denso PetrolatumTape System

Corrosion Prevention - Protecting Raw Water Intake Structure

The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is an emergency petroleumstore maintained by the United States Department of Energy. With5 locations along the Gulf of Mexico Coast, it is the largestemergency supply in the world with the current capacity tohold up to 727 million barrels (116 million m3) of crude oil.

Corrosion protection for a largeRaw Water Intake structure atthe Big Hill Site had been acontinual battle for the DOE.After many years of painting thebeams, columns and pipingnetwork, they selected the DensoPetrolatum Tape System in 1998.After 8 years of outstandingservice life, the DOE againselected the Denso materials tocomplete phase 2 (the secondhalf of the steel structure).

Between the 2 phases ofinstallation, the overall scopeincluded the protection ofapproximately 4,000 LF ofstructural steel beams and braces,

300 LF of 24” and 48” dia. steelsupport columns and pilings, aswell as 1,000 LF of various pipesizes. Denso materials includedthe following: 110 cases ofDenso Paste S105, 380 cases ofDensyl Tape, 65 cases of DensoH-Tack Primer, 200 cases ofDenso Hi-Tack Tape, and variousother materials.

DOE personnel are verypleased with the Phase 1 servicelife to date, as their previouspaint systems were only lasting 2to 3 years. Furthermore, the

recently completed Phase 2installation, was completed ontime and under budget. Themassive steel structure willreceive many more years ofcorrosion protection due to theDenso Petrolatum Tape System.
