Densoband Joint Seal for EastMidlands Airport

Sealing Mastics - Flexible Asphalt to Concrete Jointing

Denso has been used as a joint seal on recently completed contractsat East Midlands Airport and RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, carriesout by Cemex UK Construction Services Ltd of SavilleStreet, Sheffield

In both contracts theDensoband joint seal was appliedto the interface between thetarmacadam asphalt and concreteslab areas. In the case of RAFWaddington a PQ high densityconcrete was used.

Around 300 linear metresof Densoband were laid at EastMidlands Airport.

Densoband is a polymermodified bitumen strip which isapproved by the British AirportsAuthority as well as theDepartment of Transport in theManual of Contracts 7th Editionfor use in asphalt wearing coursejoints for asphalt and asphalt toconcrete interface, as analternative to the traditional hotpoured bitumen. The Densoband sealed jointremains intact because it isunaffected by extreme

temperature changes whichoften lead to furtherdeterioration and cracking. This also means that weed

Denso Void Filler Protectionfor M1 Viaduct

Corrosion Prevention - Protection of Steel Support Columns

Increased traffic density and the growth in the number of vehicleswith 44-ton vehicle loading on the UK’s motorways and trunk roadshas meant the introduction of new traffic regulations. An outcomeof this is that several road bridges and viaducts have had to bestrengthened to meet the latest traffic requirements.

The Tinsley Viaduct atJunction 34 on the M1 nearSheffield has recently beenstrengthened by maincontractors Edmund Nuttall, acting for Owen Williams. Thesecondary contractors wereCleveland Bridge Ltd, who hadthe responsibility of ensuringthat all support columns for theviaduct are adequately protectedfrom corrosion. Theanti-corrosion treatment hasincluded the use of DensoVoid-Filler at the base of thesteel support columns which reston the A631 road runningbeneath the M1 motorway.

Each column base consists ofa small chamber holding the

pivotal bearing and bearingblock, which allows forexpansion and contraction dueto temperature fluctuation.

Denso Void-Filler waspumped into each chamber to

exclude moisture, highlycorrosive road salts and air thuspreventing corrosion. Theproduct application was carriedout by Central Industrial Services(Northern) Ltd.

Denso Void-Filler is based ona microcrystalline petrolatumcontaining corrosion inhibitorsand moisture repellents. It formsa permanently flexible mediumfor the encapsulation andprotection of bearings, tendons, stay cables etc. It has been usedon a number of major civilengineering projects includingboth Severn Bridges

SeaShield System ProtectsSupport Piles of UK’s ‘Pier ofthe Year - 2006’

Corrosion Prevention - Jetty Piles

Worthing Pier, constructed in 1862, was recently voted ‘Pier of theYear - 2006 by all members of the UK National Piers Society. ThisGrade II listed building has become a landmark in the West Sussexseaside town of Worthing and is extremely popular with visitorsand residents alike.

Over the years this structurehas endured fire, explosion andmajor storm damage and isregularly exposed to heavy seasduring stormy weather. Giventhese facts, it is no smallachievement of the WorthingBorough Council EngineeringTeam that it has survived in thecondition it is today, estimatedat being approximately 80% ofits original 1862 state.

Regular maintenance hasplayed an important role inpreserving the pier and over theyears the substructure has hadvarious support piles protectedby Denso SeaShield systems.

These systems comprise a petrolatum tape inner layerto protect against corrosion and a polypropylene jacketouter layer to protect against mechanical damage andmarine growth.

The first protection system was installed in 1984 and subsequent ones have been installed duringplanned maintenance periods since. A recent inspectionshows that the SeaShield systems are still in excellentcondition and doing a great job helping to preservethe pier against the onslaught of sea and weather.

Pictures: Battered by gale force winds, heavy seas and beach shingle the underneath of thepier looks at first glance, every bit of its 144 years of age. However, after cleaning offsome of the surface marine growth (left picture), you can see that after 22 years service, the SeaShield jackets are still intact.

Bridge Pilings Protected withSeaShield Series 2000HD andSeries 500 Systems

Corrosion Prevention - Jetty Piles

At the height of World War IImore than 40,000 people livedand worked on the 450 acre (1.8km2) island. The island was inthe center of the Pearl HarborAttack, because of the battleshipmoorings surrounding the island.Today, the island houses 45naval families and 3,000 civilianworkers. Also, the bridge is usedfor access to the USS Missouriand Ford Island Museum forWartime Aircraft.

During the selection processthe US Navy and contractorreviewed many different pileprotection systems and chosethe SeaShield System due to theexcellent reputation of Denso

The Ford Island Bridge was constructed in 1998 to connect PearlHarbor’s Ford Island to the mainland of Honolulu, Hawaii. Toprovide long term protection of the piles the SeaShield Series 2000HD and Series 500 was selected as the system.

for providing superior products, customer service and long-termhistory worldwide.

Sea Engineering out ofHonolulu, Hawaii installed thesystems. They completed theproject on time and gave ravereviews on the ease of installationof the Series 2000 HD and Series500 Systems.

All together the projectincluded protection forapproximately 4,378 LF of 24”octagonal concrete piles using theSeries 2000HD System and 211LF using the Series 500 System.

The Series 2000 HD Systemincluded SeaShield Marine Tapeand custom fabricated 60 milHDPE jackets. The tape waswrapped using a 55% overlap andthen the jackets were secured intoplace using 316 stainless steelbolts.

The Series 500 System includedfiberglass jackets that wereconstructed of 3/16” thick wovenand roving fiberglass and gelcoated. The annulus was thenpumped and filled with theSeaShield 550 Epoxy Grout. Theepoxy grout kits consisted of 1gallon of 2-part epoxy and a 44lb. bag of grout yielding 0.4 cu.ft.

Both systems will provide manyyears of additional service life tothe Ford Island bridge pilings.

Denso Canada Launches theSeaShield Series 500

Corrosion Prevention - Marine Piles

This lack of developmentsomewhat limits the largepotential for Denso Seashieldsystems sales. Denso Canada hashowever been extremelysuccessful of late in capturing alarge percentage of the availablepiling protection jobs on boththe East and West Coast. Someof this work has involved Series100, Series 2000HD and Series90, as well as Series 500.

The most recent project waslocated on the East Coast ofCanada in what is known as theBay of Fundy. This particular bayhas some of the worlds’ largesttidal movements atapproximately 30’.

This job involved the

Although the Canadian coastline is one of the most extensive in theworld, very little of the vast coast itself is developed with ports, loading structures and docking facilities.

application of Series 500 jacketsand the pumping of 550 epoxyand aggregate. The job was veryunique due to the characteristicsof the tidal movement in thisarea of Canada.

Twice a day we experiencehigh and low tide, over adistance of approximately 30’.Over a 12-hour period, the tidemoves from a position of hightide to a position of low tide, with a brief resting period inbetween of approximately15-20 minutes.

When the high tide begins todrop, or when the low tidebegins to rise, however, the rateof change is 4’/hour, which isextremely fast for working in

the water and applying jackets, pumping aggregate etc. This jobinvolved working from a smallboat tied to the piling whichadded to the difficulty ofthe job.

The project involves theprotection of approximately 200existing concrete piles that havebadly eroded down. Some of theconcrete grout is eroded downto the original steel piling, making the annulus anywherefrom 3⁄4” up to 6” in some cases.

The job consisted of installingthe jackets on stagings, as thepile protection was required partway up the pile, approximately12’ from the mud line. The 10’long jackets were then filledwith aggregate by pumpingfrom the upper deck where theepoxy and aggregate weremixed, for a distance of 63’from the pump down to theinjection ports below the deck.

Overall, the job was verysuccessful and we are lookingforward to continuing withmore piling encapsulation at thissite in 2007.

SeaShield Series 250HDProtects Ferry Terminal Piles

Corrosion Prevention - Jetty Piles

Toll’s newest ferry, Kaitaki(which means ‘challenger’ inMaori), is now operating fromher new Linkspan berth inWellington Harbour.

The Kaitaki can carry up to1600 passengers and 600 carson 3 decks and has a trailercapacity of 1780 lane metres, making her New Zealand’slargest vehicular passenger ferry.Due to the Kaitaki’s length anew Linkspan terminal was builtto allow her to berth at theWellington Inter-Island

The Toll Group’s Inter-Island ferries are one of the main passenger, vehicular and rail links between New Zealand’s North andSouth islands.

Terminal.Because of its ease of

application and level ofprotection, the terminaloperators Centerport PLC Ltd.selected the Denso Seashield250HD system to protect thefirst four piles. As the pilesare relatively new, minimalpreparation was required, consisting mainly of scrapingand scrubbing off the marinegrowth and slime to a depth of2 metres. Orontes Bank NavigationBeacons Protected withSeashield Series 250HD

Corrosion Prevention - Jetty Piles

The tidal current is extremelystrong over this shallow pointdue to the shoal outcrop. Due tothe harsh conditions the robust250HD System was selected.

Installed by Adelaide Salvage& Diving for the AustralianMaritime Safety Authority, thisrework was completed in under3 days. The structure isinspected every 6 months and todate there has been no issuesregarding the suitability ofthe system.

Another interesting point isthat the Gulf of St Vincent,Spencer Gulf and the Bay ofMexico have something incommon. These are the onlyplaces in the world that havewhat is known as a dodge tide.

Orontes Bank Navigation Beacon is positioned on a shoal in theshipping lane that leads up and down ‘The Gulf St Vincent’ inSouth Australia. Situated 25 nautical miles west of Port Adelaide, the beacon sits approximately halfway across the peninsular. The Orontes Bank Navigation Beacon is subjected to

extremely strong tidal currents.

The Seashield 250HD system

This is where there is no tidalmovement for 24 hours. This isa very good time to fishespecially during a full moon.
