What Are Lead Magnets And What Are They Used For

A lead magnet, also known as an “opt-in bribe”, is an incentive that businesses offer potential buyers for free, in exchange for their contact information, such as name and email.

And why do they do that?

They offer a lead magnet to build and grow a list of prospects, who have similar interests, problems and desires. Having their contact information, they can now keep communicating with them.

They can send valuable and useful information, product news, offer special promotions - and eventually turn them into paying and loyal customers.

This lead magnet strategy works for nearly any kind of business. But for an online business, it’s even more important to build a list of prospects than for a brick and mortar business.

The reason for this is that it’s not often a website visitor buys a product or service the very first time they see it online - unless it’s a well-known product or website (think Amazon), or a low-cost product.

Most often, website visitors need to get exposed to an offer several times before they take action and buy.

They also need to feel a certain level of trust for the seller. Therefore, it’s important for any business that wants to generate leads and sales online, to have the possibility to follow-up with its prospects. And one smart and effective way is to use a lead magnet, collect emails and build a list of prospects and customers.

To attract high quality prospects to your lead magnet, it must offer something your visitors REALLY want. They must find it compelling enough to enter their email address in the opt-in form, in exchange for the lead magnet.

Many lead magnets are downloadable content such as an eBook, a report, a guide, a cheat sheet, a worksheet, a resource list or a checklist.

Some other examples of lead magnets are: video (or a video series), a podcast, an audio, a software, a plug-in, a quiz, a survey, a contest, a coupon or a free trial.

What format and type of lead magnet should you choose to create? It depends on your business, what your lead magnet is about, and also how your ideal customer prefers to consume content.

1) Know exactly what your target audience REALLY wants

• What does your target audience want? What is your audience attracted to?

• What questions is your audience seeking answers to?

• What problems are they searching a solution for online? What keywords and phrases do they use?

• What are their “need to solve NOW” problem(s)?

• What dreams and desires do they have?

2) Offer a solution and speak directly to your ideal customer

• What is ONE solution you can give your prospects, to solve ONE big problem? Or what is ONE solution that can help them achieve or come closer to a result they want?

• Your solution should be simple, quick and easy to implement.

• Your lead magnet must speak directly to your ideal customer’s needs and desired end result

• Use your prospects’ specific language

3) Be ultra specific (not vague)

• Make sure your ad copy and landing page copy is clear, concise and congruent with the lead magnet

• Your lead magnet should focus on ONE problem, ONE challenge, ONE pain or ONE desire

• And it should offer ONE specific solution to ONE specific audience

4) Give immediate gratification

• The lead magnet should be quick and easy to consume - avoid long boring ebooks or too long videos

• People don’t want to spend hours to get the results, they want quick fixes and “magic bullets”

• It’s great if you can give simple, actionable steps that lead to the desired outcome

• Your lead magnet should assist in selling your product(s) - not be a road block in your sales funnel

5) High perceived value

• Just because your lead magnet is free, it mustn’t be perceived as “cheap”

• Make sure it provides great value to your target audience and you must deliver on your promise

• You only have one chance to make a first impression, so make sure your lead magnet looks professional and gives a good impression
