TARGETING EMISSIONS WORLDWIDE

‘Implementing aproperly run LDARprogram can reduceemissions fromequipment leaks bymore than 63%.’ NEICC

The most effective method of controlling fugitive emissions is by the implementation of a structured leak detection and repair program.

Through a structured program of identifying the source ofemissions and then taking actionto eliminate or minimize it, majorclient gains can be made.Excellent financial payback willinitially be seen by a reduction inlost product that would have beenotherwise lost to the environment.A safer, more healthier workingenvironment for workers and abusiness shown to be takingproactive community decisions.Corporately clean and caring.

• Cost effective method for major emission reduction

• Plant emissions screened in accordance to Method 21

• Compliance with environmentallegislation

• Improvements in processefficiency

• Increased levels of plant safety

• Major savings in the reduction of product loss

• Application of Best AvailableTechnology (BAT)

• Independent reporting forenvironmental compliance

LDAR Envolve environmentalsolutions are designed to ensurethat our clients reduce theirenvironmental impact byminimizing the release of airbornepollution and contaminants.

As the legislation for controllingfugitive volatile organiccompound (VOC) emissions fromprocess facilities tightens, Plantoperators have a requirement forstrict control in all areas of theirprocess.

SAFETY ENVIRONMENT HEALTH

FLIR Technology.Infared cameras haverevolutionizedmaintenance in manyindustries, proving tobe the most superiortechnology in findingelectrical andmechanical hiddenfaults – even beforethey occur.

In a complex petrochemical facilitythere may be many thousandpotential leak paths. A gas detectioncamera allows the user to examinemany potential leak sources in ashort time and from a distance.

IMPROVING PLANT START UPSAFETY

The camera has proven success inleak detection surveys during thestart up of process plants followingboth planned and unplanned shut-downs. The thermal cycles associatedwith shut-down and start-up caninitiate leaks in equipment that waspreviously leak free and componentsthat have been disturbed due tomaintenance activity may also leak.

LEAK LOCATION – LOST PRODUCTOPPORTUNITY

Leaks from process equipment, no matter how small, not onlyconstitute a potential damage to the environment, they also represent the lost product that could be sold to customers.

The camera can survey the commonindustry leak paths such as:

• Flanges

• Plugs and Caps

• Couplings

• Holes

• Drain Covers

• Valve Stems

• Pump Seals

• Machinery

• Passing Valves

• Instrument Connectors

CUI – CORROSION UNDERINSULATION

Leaks are occasionally found inunexpected locations. Equipmentthat is thermally insulated issusceptible to water penetrationinto the insulation if the sealing ofthe outer cladding is poor. If theequipment temperature issuitable, the water heats up andcan create a region of very highcorrosion out of sight under theinsulation. The shell of theequipment can rapidly corrode to such an extent that it starts toleak and this leakage can bedetected by the camera atconsiderable distance.

LDAR Envolve are the UK Leaderin leak detection and repairprograms with over 10 years ofexperience in emission monitoringoffering a wealth of experiencetailoring LDAR programs toindividual site needs.

TAG VALVES IN LINE WITHTHE P&ID NUMBERS,MODIFY THE LINEDRAWINGS IF NECESSARY

From the information takenfrom the process drawingsan identification tag isplaced on the valve tocorrespond to thenecessary plantidentification. Notes aretaken as to the safetyrequirements and positionof each piece of equipmentand any necessary changesare made to the processdrawings. A monitoringroute is then devised toprovide a continuous trial.Equipment located indifficult locations isidentified any the necessarysafety requirements suchas scaffolding or laddersare requested.

IDENTIFY PROCESS LINES,VALVES ANDCOMPONENTS

Initial screening utilising theinfrared camera mayhighlight immediate areasof concern. Traditionallyeach area is split intosections and the processline diagrams are studied tocompile a list of parts andcomponents that needscreening. Each componentis logged and recorded ontoa work list for screening.Utilisation of the linedrawings allows a safe flowof business duringscreening.

REPAIR, REPLACE, OVERHAUL

An initial process is drawn up to try and repair certain valvesor flanges while the plant is still on line, this can be done by ‘nipping’ up or retightening.Depending on the work loadduring a shutdown, a programof equipment overhaul, replacement or repair can be drawn up for areas ofconcern.

RE-SCREEN AND AUDIT. RE-MEASURE THE EMISSIONREADINGS

The infrared camera canprovide useful help in plant re-start following the shutdown period by highlightingany initial problems. It is thennormal procedure toperiodically re-screen and re-measure the emissions.

Where customers have theirown in house monitoring teamsit is prudent practice to havetheir readings IndependentlyAudited.

RECORD EMISSIONS IN THEDATABASE, CORRELATEVALUES TO PLANTLEAKAGE, REPORTFINDINGS

Following a work trialdevised from the P&IDdrawings the emissionreadings are taken utilizingthe latest in TVA measuringequipment. These readingsare then recorded in thespecially devised LDAREnvolve database that canbe adapted to suit differingclient requirements. These readings are thencorrelated to provide aplant leakage level and a comprehensive reportraised to provide the clientwith the findings.
