experience exactly what aromatic essences have to offer

us on a daily basis.

Patricia Starr is educated in the field of Aromatherapy and

Herbal Medicine. She has been teaching Aromatherapy for

the past 15 years, and continues to research and clinically

practice the use of essential oils and herbs by bringing

Living Plant Medicine back into Main Stream Healthcare.

The natural world has been supporting mankind from the be-

ginning, and continues to be sourced by the pharmacological

companies “to find the latest and greatest”

News & Notes In The Spotlight

A Warm Welcome to Marion Hersh

Originally from Chicago and a graduate

of the University of Illinois with a degree

in Bacteriology, Marion taught that

subject to high school students and after

marrying and moving to Stamford, CT

she also sold real estate., a career she

continued after moving to Sarasota in

1994. Her daughter lives here too and her

son is close by in Tampa. When Marion

became a widow she began to think of

adopting an easier lifestyle without the

responsibilities of home maintenance; neighbors in Misty Creek

suggested Lakehouse West and after a visit Marion decided to

make the move.

One of Marion’s favorite games is Bridge; she plays several

times a week , she enjoys lectures, and looks forward to

participating in other Lakehouse West activities along with

meeting more of her new neighbors.

Hello to New Neighbors

Barbara and Larry Olson

The Olsons met in

Cleveland, OH while Larry

was studying electrical

engineering. Upon gradua-

tion he met Barbara and the

couple moved to San Diego,

CA where Larry worked in

the space industry for 2 yrs

before joining Philco-Ford’s

weapons systems in

Anaheim. Barbara was a stay at home mom; the couple has three

daughters and a son. A job opportunity at NCR brought them to

Akron, OH Barbara's hometown, where her parents owned a

grocery store and needed help. Larry’s technology background at

NCR put him in the forefront of scanners at grocery check-outs

and he was active in their development for nearly 30 yrs before

the family sold the store in 1991 and retired to Sarasota. But

neither Barbara nor Larry was ready to slow down. Larry

managed a software co. in Englewood and a similar company in

Sarasota, edited a manufacturing magazine in Nokomis and was

a civilian technician writing software for subpoenas for the

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office while Barbara was an

accounting technician for SC Clerk of the Courts.

After 25 yrs in their Huntington Point home they decided to join

our Lakehouse West community to make new friends and have

time for other activities. Barbara is an extraordinary needlepoint

artist who has replicated several Norman Rockwell’s famous

Saturday Evening Post magazine covers that hang on their

apartment walls. Larry is playing pool with the Wednesday

group and both look forward to more time to swim and read.

Prevention of Stroke: Part 2

Barbara Argue R.N., Director of Nursing

Last month we learned about warning

signs of a stroke. Here are some ways to

protect yourself:

Lower blood pressure– High blood

pressure is a huge risk factor. Maintain

a BP of less than 120/80 by reducing salt

in your diet, avoiding high cholesterol

foods, quitting smoking and following

an exercise program.

Lose weight– Being overweight

increases risk for stroke.

Exercise more– Exercise lowers weight and BP. The Surgeon

General recommends that adults engage in 2 hours and 30

minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity

(like a brisk walk) every week.

Drink in moderation– Alcohol can increase BP. The Center

for Disease Control recommends that men should have no more

than two drinks per day and women only one.

Treat Diabetes– High blood sugar damages blood vessels, so

keep your blood sugar under control by exercising, sticking to

a healthy diet and taking prescribed medicines to keep blood

sugar within the recommended range.

Quit Smoking– Smoking accelerates clot formation and thick-

ens blood, building plaque in the arteries that can lead to stroke.

The Massage Suite is located on the 3rd floor across from the

library. Appointments are also available in your apartments.

Wednesdays

By appointment.
