Welcome home. Gus Chutorash Camp Director Dear Unit Leaders, The safety of our campers, staff, and guests is our primary concern. The MCC is continuing to plan for a summer camp program, and will continue to plan for a summer camping program until it is no longer feasible to do so. Obviously, we are taking our directives week by week and government mandates (such as the State’s mandates re- garding social distancing and non-essential businesses) will ultimately determine whether and how we can open and operate our camps this summer. However, we believe that it would be best to be prepared for the possibility of conduct- ing our camping program this summer. We have targeted May 15 as the date for determining whether our summer camping program will be conducted in 2020. Please be advised that while the 2020 Scouts BSA Reservation Payment Schedule calls for your final payment to be made by May 4th, we are extending that final payment deadline to May 15 to coincide with our Summer Camp 2020 decision announce- ment. Please also be reminded that: 1. Merit Badge sign-up has been rolled back to just $50 per Scout due to be able to sign-up for Merit Badges. 2. Our Refund Policy has been updated to say “Any unit or individual participant that wishes to cancel their Scouts BSA or Cub Scout Resident Camp reservation due to any COVID-19 concern will receive a 100% refund of their camp fees paid as long as notification is made at least 14 days before their arrival date at camp this summer. Noti- fication must be made in writing [i.e. e-mail] to either the Camp Director or Bill Licht, Outdoor Adventures Reserva- tion Manager.” 3. From The Desk of The DeanLess than 50 days to the start of Summer Camp! It will be here before we know it! Are you and/or your Scouts ready? Are merit badges selected? Have the pre-requirements been looked at, or better yet started? Reminder: although workbooks are not a requirement, they can be a great tool for helping Scouts organize their thoughts for certain merit badges.

Our Area Directors and their staff are busy prepar-ing to provide the best program for our scouts. We are looking forward to a great Summer in the Great Outdoors of Cole Canoe Base! We will be using the BSA 2020 Requirements for All merit badges this year. The Pre-Requirements list is available at: https://michiganscouting.org/outdooradventures/forms/ If you have any questions about merit badg-es, please feel free to contact me at:[email protected]

We are looking forward to seeing you and Welcom-ing you Home!

AquaticsSaturday Swim Checks at Camp:As many units this year were not able to complete a pre-camp swim check this year, we will be offering Saturday Swim Checks at camp from 4pm – 6pm. Units that visit us on Saturday will receive their aquatics safety briefing, as well as the opportunity to complete their swim check. As part of this we ask for unit leaders to help run the swim checks for your unit on Saturday. We will also allow for anyone who wishes to re-test for their swim check can come down on Sunday as well. We will still as always be accepting any swim checks completed within the last year, you can find a the form at https://coleca-noebase.com/documents.php as the Swim Classifi-cation Record.

DNR Boaters Safety:The State of Michigan Department of Natural Re-sources no longer allows for onsite instruction for the Boater’s Safety course, instead opting for an online training course. The course is a prerequisite for the Motorboating Merit Badge, and is available at https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-350-79119_79144_79642---,00.html. The course costs $30.00 and includes a training course online and an examination that must be passed in order to com-plete the course.

Can’t wait to see you down at Aquatics this summer!Gloria Cabadas & Matt Grimble

Second, many leaders have reached out to me re-garding American Red Cross trainings. During the current situation many people have had a difficult time getting these trainings completed. We are still requiring Wilderness First Aid from one leader from each High Adventure trip. The Red Cross under-stands the difficult situation many people are in and is offering a FREE 120 day cert extension course for many of their nonprofessional certifications, such as WFA. Please visit redcross.org for more information.

Thanks everyone for all you do to support the CCB High Adventure Program! We look forward to see-ing you this summer!

Staff HostsAs always our staff is preping for an amazing sum-mer! During our training we are also preparing our staff to be the best Staff Hosts possible. If your troop adored one particular Staff Host last summer, or you would like a staff member from your troop to host you, your troop can always request them. How-ever, if your troop would like to keep things fresh and have someone new every year, your troop can also request to not have a specific Staff Host.

The best way to request a specific Staff Host would be to inform the office before noon on Sunday and they can inform me, or you are welcome to ask me yourself. If you would like, you could even email me at [email protected].

I am looking forward to seeing everyone!Victoria McGowStaff Host Coordinator

Gregg MessageHello! Summer is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited. The High Adventure team has been working hard all winter long to get ready for the biggest season of high adventure programs yet. We are still offering all aspects of the river program as we have in the past, as well at the traditional high adventure treks. But we are working on some big changes!

Many of you are already familiar with how the High Adventure program has grown over the past several years, with the addition of the Great Lakes Kayak Adventure and the Ogemaw Trails ATV Week; and who could forget our newest partnership with the Great Lakes Sailing Adventure! These have been some exciting times to say the least. But were not planning to slow down any time soon. 2020 will see four new High Adventure treks at Cole Canoe Base! We are expanding our program to include more kayaking opportunities on the Great Lakes, New and expanded Grand Island Programs, and an ad-ditional 100 Miler Canoe Trip. This summer is the trial run for these 4 new adventures, we hope to be able to officially add them to our ever expanding menu of High Adventure treks beginning in 2021. Please feel free to contact me for more information on any of our High Adventure Programs.

For 2020 High Adventure units, I want to make sure you have a few notes in mind. First, we are still plan-ning full steam ahead with the 2020 season, however amid the current situation, we will be making some changes to allow for more social distancing and in-creased sanitation standards in the High Adventure Program. Many of these details will be discussed at camp and at the June 6th “Trek Leader Training”, beginning at 9:30 AM this is an all day, free training required for many of our High Adventure Treks,

Mix-FixMy name is Rick Funke, and I am a former Assis-tant Camp Director at Cole Canoe Base. I have had the pleasure to meet and work with many of you in the past, and I will be filling in for Bill Kamman as your 2020 Mix-Fix chief. Mix-Fix 2020 is shaping up to be one of the most interesting on record! The COVID-19 pandemic has postponed the 2020 Mix-Fix to at least May 30, 2020. However, rest assured that when the pandemic is over that Mix-Fix 2020 will proceed!

There are many exciting improvements planned for 2020, including several new pavilions, many new picnic tables, and LED light upgrades around camp. One thing that remains the same is the need for volunteers and in-kind donations for the many planned projects. I encourage everyone to join and share the Mix-Fix 2020 Facebook event to stay up to date with planned projects and event date changes. We are using the hashtag #mixfix2020 to consoli-date digital information and provide a quick search function for all info and pictures. If you or your unit know of anyone that would like to make in-kind do-nations for proposed projects, volunteer for a par-ticular project, or want to otherwise assist around camp, please feel free to email me at:[email protected].

Stay healthy and safe, and I hope to see everyone at Mix-Fix 2020!
