IInnttrroodduuccttiioonn

The QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card provides server man-agement functions. You can use the KVM PCI Card to manage and monitor components in your servers through a LAN, even if the network is down. The KVM PCI Card offers an extensive hardware solution for server man-agement. The AST2000 is a 4-in-1 SOC that includes a VGA con-troller, BMC, KVM over IP, and Virtual Storage functions. This document specifies the QSSC K9168 functions from an application point of view, mainly for the KVM over IP and Virtual Storage. The KVM PCI Card defines a new level of remote access devices. It combines digital remote access via IP networks with extensive and integrated system management. The KVM PCI Card offers convenient, remote KVM access and control via Internet or LAN, capturing, digitizing, and compressing video and transmitting it with keyboard and mouse signals to and from a remote computer. Remote access and control software runs only on the card’s em-bedded processors, not on mission critical servers, so there is no obstruction with server operation or impact on network performance.

SSeerrvveerr SSyysstteemm OOvveerrvviieeww The QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card supports remote KVM/storage and Intelligent Platform Management Inter-face (IPMI) server management. When installed on a motherboard with an onboard Baseboard Management Controller (BMC), the QSSC K9168 supports server management features. If the onboard BMC has an IPMB connector, the QSSC K9168 can communicate with the BMC to implement standard IPMI features, such as get/clear SEL or system power control. Below is a concept block diagram of the QSSC K9168 in a general server platform scenario.

SSaaffeettyy MMeeaassuurreess

Computer components and electronic circuit boards can be damaged by discharges of static electricity. Working on computers that are still connected to a power supply can be extremely dangerous. Follow the simple guidelines below to avoid damage to your computer or yourself. • Always disconnect the computer from the power

outlet whenever you are working inside the com-puter case.

• If possible, wear a grounded wrist strap when you are working inside the computer case. Alterna-tively, discharge any static electricity by touching the bare metal chassis of the computer case, or the bare metal body of any other grounded appliance.

• Hold electronic circuit boards by the edges only. Do not touch the components on the board unless it is necessary to do so. Do not flex or stress the circuit board.

• Leave all components inside the static-proof packaging until you are ready to use the compo-nent for the installation.

AC jack Connect an external power adapter to this jack to provide backup power to the QSSC K9168.

Mini USB Connect the KVM PCI card to an available USB port on the local server or PC, or to the client PC or remote server.

HHaarrddwwaarree SSeettuupp This section describes how to install the QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card into a server, connect USB, video, and LAN, and how to set up for HDMI.

Installing the QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card

Follow these instructions to install the QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card into your server.

1. Open the server and locate an empty PCI slot. 2. Place the KVM PCI Card into the PCI slot. You may

use any PCI slot (33 or 66 MHz, 32 or 64Bit, or PCIX).

Setting up the QSSC K9168

There are two possible configurations for setting up the QSSC K9168: single server and dual server setup. In a single server arrangement, the QSSC K9168 is in-stalled onto a remote server or PC, providing KVM func-tionality to the host client. Whereas in a dual server situation, the QSSC K9168 card remains setup in the initial host server while a second server or PC is connected to the external video and USB ports. In this way, KVM connectivity is secure and effectively extended without the need to reinstall the QSSC K9168 PCI card.

Single Server Setup In a single server setup, the QSSC K9168 is installed in the server to be remotely managed and connected to the in-ternal video port. The instructions that follow demonstrate a single server setup.

1. Connect a VGA cable to the QSSC K9168’s VGA internal port.

2. Connect the USB cables to the server as shown.

Dual Server Setup The dual server setup requires connecting a second server through the QSSC K9168 by using the external VGA port and USB to link both servers. Refer to the instructions and illustrations as follows for a dual server setup.

1. Connect the QSSC K9168’s external video port to the remote server’s video output.

Connecting Ethernet

Connect the QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card to Ethernet using the card’s RJ45 connector. The connector accom-modates either a 100Mbps 100Base-TX connection or a 10Mbps 10BASE-T connection. The adapter automatically senses the connection speed and adjusts to the appropri-ate operation mode.

Dual Server Setup 100/10Mbps Connection To establish a 100/10Mbps connection, the cable has to be connected to a 100/10BASE-T hub. For 100BASE-TX Ethernet networks the KVM PCI Card supports category 5 UTP cable

1. Make sure that the cable is wired appropriately for a standard 100/10BASE-T adapter.

2. Align the RJ45 plug with the notch on the adapter’s connector and insert it into the adapter’s connector.

CCoonnnneeccttiinngg PPoowweerr CCoonnttrrooll aanndd IIPPMMII The QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card supports an Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). IPMI is a protocol for monitoring server hardware for such characteristics as temperature, voltage, and chassis intrusion. This section explains connecting the QSSC K9168 KVM PCI Card to power control and IPMI.

Installing Power Control

This connection is used to power on or power off the sys-tem, or to perform a hard reset. The bundled cables con-nect the card to the front panel connectors and the power switch. Refer to the following illustration and instructions.

2. Connect the other end to the motherboard front panel connector and to the power switch or button on the front panel.

Connect the QSSC K9168 IPMB connector to the con-nector on the motherboard to provide IPMI support. Refer to the following illustration for the location of the IPMB connector on the QSSC K9168.

To enable external video connection, follow the proceeding instructions.

1. Ensure that the system is turned off before begin-ning any modifications.

2. Set the S1 switch pins as follows.

5. Turn on the system. 6. In the system BIOS, set the VGA settings to PCI. 7. Save settings and exit the BIOS menu.

External video mode is enabled. This concludes the second chapter. The next chapter de-scribes how to get started with the Discovery Utility.

UUssiinngg tthhee DDiissccoovveerryy UUttiilliittyy

The Discovery application enables users to locate AST2000 devices over the LAN. The utility is located on the CD-ROM that comes with the QSSC K9168.

Note! Because the Discovery Utility sends a multicast package through the local gateway, ensure that the network gateway is set properly on the server side and client side. You should also configure your firewall on client and server side with fol-lowing port assignments: UDP port: 2000; Multi-cast port: 5000

Browse to the location of the file on the CD-ROM (Dis-covery.exe) and double-click the file. The Discovery utility opens.

The following items are listed:

Type: Lists the name of the AST2000 device. Host Name: Lists the host name of the AST2000 device. MAC: Lists the Mac address of the AST2000 device. IP Address: Lists the IP address of the AST2000 device. Netmask: Lists the netmask of the AST2000 device.

The AST2000 firmware features an embedded web server, enabling users to connect to the AST2000 using an Internet browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer) without needing to install KVM and Virtual Storage software on the remote console side PC. The following web browsers are supported:

The default IP address is https://192.168.1.2/ When connecting to the AST2000 using a web browser, SSL is automatically activated and the display user login form is displayed prompting for the username and pass-word. This authentication with SSL protection prevents unauthorized intruders such as hackers from gaining ac-cess to the AST2000 web server. If authentication is passed, the user can manage the server by privilege. At the same time, the PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) records all user information, including user ID and privi-lege. The following figure displays the user authentication web page.

The Sensor Reading tab provides information about system hardware such as the fan speed, internal tem-perature, and voltage.

SSL Certificate

The SSL Certificate page enables the Administrator to generate a new CSR (Certificate Signing Request) key automatically or upload the key. Click the SSL Certificate tab to view the following web page.

About Certificate Signing Requests Before you can create the SSL Certificate, you must first generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) on your server. A CSR is a body of text that contains encoded in-formation specific to your company and domain name. You can generate a CSR or upload a manually created CSR. The following information is required:

• Common Name (CN): the domain name for which you are requesting the SSL certificate.

KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, and Mouse. KVM over IP redirects server video screen, keyboard, and mouse data to or from a remote console PC via a network, so that the administrator can monitor the server and control keyboard and mouse to operate the server remotely. KVM Client HW platform requirement: RKVM applica-tion needs CPU resource to decode the video and draw the screen picture, so we suggest CPU Pentium4 1.8G and 512 dram to run, otherwise the Client Application will timeout and disconnect from BMC.

VViiddeeoo SSccrreeeenn RReeddiirreeccttiioonn AST2000 captures video output, compresses, and sends it to a remote console PC with encryption. The Java remote KVM application on the console PC receives and displays the server’s video screen. AST2000 can acquire video source either from PCI bus as VGA mode or from external source as Video mode. Please refer to hardware specifi-cation for more detail information about mode switching. The redirection specifications are as follows:

As a result, the managed server’s BIOS or OS will detect the USB keyboard and mouse attached, and load their drivers to service them. The following image shows the managed server’s device manager window.

The remote console sends keyboard and mouse input to the AST2000, which then receives and packs them in USB HID format and transmits them to the managed server through the USB interface and protocol.

Hide Console Side Mouse

You can hide or show the console side (local) mouse by clicking the Local Cursor button on the toolbar or by clicking Control on the main menu and selecting Local Cursor.

HHoott--KKeeyy SSiimmuullaattiioonn Since Windows or other application programs have priority in using hot-keys before the remote server, (for example Ctrl-Alt-Del), the Java remote KVM ignores these keys and does not send them. However, you can assign hotkeys in the Java remote KVM application (see Hotkey Setup on page 60) and these hotkeys are available on the menu-bar where user can select hot keys to send to AST2000 and the managed server directly, instead pressing key(s). You can also set up hotkeys by clicking Control | Setup HotKeys.

The AST2000 detects these changes and adjusts the dis-play window automatically. Before using dynamic scaling video resolution function, please make sure that the state of the video resolution mode is set to Fit mode and Not Scroll Mode. When CD-ROM Emulation function is enabled, the managed server will find a USB CD-ROM drive. User puts the target CD into the remote console PC CD-ROM drive. While managed server will access this virtual attached USB CD-ROM, AST2000 will redirect to the CD in console PC and Java Remote KVM will access the target CD in-stead. The CD format only supports data CD in Mode 1 and Mode 2 Form 1. It does not support VCD and CDDA.

USB Flash Disk Emulation

When USB Flash Disk Emulation function is enabled and with the USB flash disk inserted to console PC USB port, the managed server will find a USB removable drive. While managed server access this virtual attached USB flash drive, AST2000 will redirect to the flash disk in console PC and Java Remote KVM will access the target flash disk instead. CD /DVD ROM Emulation

Java RKVM can read CD/DVD ISO image file and emulate a CD/DVD ROM on the managed server. Now, we only support ISO9660 format.

Note! Regarding the CD/DVD-ROM ISO image file, we only support the data format. We do not support any WAV, Video and other extended formats. (e.g.: compress format etc.)

Note! If the Java Remote KVM customer selects a wrong ISO format file, it will go into the No Media status and the customer needs to click media change to reselect a right ISO file.

Multidevice Configuration

Use the procedure below to configure OS specific managed devices on the server.

Redhat AS4.0 You are required to rebuild initial ramdisk.

1. In /etc/modprobe.conf add the line below: options scsi_mod max_luns=xxx (add the number of LUNs to support in place of xxx)

BBeeffoorree yyoouu BBeeggiinn Warning! Before removing the server cover, disconnect all power. Unplug the AC power cord; disconnect all peripherals, and all LAN lines.

Make sure you have a stable, clean working environment. Dust and dirt can get into computer components and cause a malfunction. Many of the screws on the server are dif-ferent sizes; use containers to keep screws and small components separated. Adequate lighting and proper tools can prevent you from accidentally damaging internal components. Most of the following procedures require only a few simple tools, in-cluding the following:

• A Philips screwdriver • A flat-tipped screwdriver • A set of jewelers screwdrivers • A grounding strap • An anti-static pad

Most of the electrical connections can be disconnected by using your fingers. It is recommended that you do not use needle-nosed pliers to disconnect connections as these can damage the soft metal or plastic parts of the connec-tors. Before working on internal components, make sure that the server power is off. Ground yourself before touching any internal components, by touching a metal object. Static electricity can damage many of the server’s electronic components. Humid environments tend to have less static

Installation Problems

Perform the following checks if you are troubleshooting an installation problem:

• Check all cable and power connections. • If the network is reporting an error, see if the server

has enough memory and disk space available. • Remove all added options, one at a time, and try to

power up the system. If after removing an option the server works, you may find that it is a problem with the option or a configuration problem between the option and the server. Contact the option vendor for assistance.

• If the system doesn’t power on, check the LED display. If the power LED is not on, you may not be receiving AC power. Check the AC power cord to make sure that it is securely connected.
