GCSE Subject Guide
Welcome February 2015
Dear Student
Over the next few weeks you will be making very important decisions
regarding your future. This booklet is designed to help you make decisions
about the GCSE subjects you would like to study next year.
Before you choose a subject/course, you should carefully consider what you
want to get out of the learning experience. The decision you make now will
affect your future, so you should consider your options thoroughly and not
rush your decision, as you could be studying your chosen course for a
number of years.
Some people know which career they want to go into, while others do not.
We're all different, so don't worry if you're not sure which career you would
like to go into after you've finished studying. It's important that you choose a
subject for the right reasons. You should genuinely enjoy a subject and want
to develop your skills in it, with a view to progressing into further education or
a career in that area.
Before you make your decisions you should consider:
What career you are interested in?
What subjects you need to study?
What subjects you like best and which ones you are best at?
Where you can study, a place where you will be supported and
guided, helping you to achieve your full potential?
Your GCSE examination profile is a significant factor in determining which
degree course and indeed which Higher Education Institution you will be
offered a place at in future years.
When selecting your GCSE subjects, be aware that whilst many degree and
higher education courses do not require specific subjects, others do. GCSE
English and GCSE Mathematics are two of your core subjects and must be
passed at Grade C level if you are to be considered for any higher
education courses in the future.
Business Management courses, Engineering and Accounting or Finance
courses will all require a minimum Grade B in Mathematics.
Modern Foreign Language (French)
Some Universities and Colleges in the South will require students to have
a GCSE in a modern foreign language in addition to any specific
A-Level subject requirements associated with the course. It is therefore
strongly recommended that students take a foreign language for GCSE.
It is recommended that any student interested in a career in the health
profession, should take Double Award Science at GCSE to allow for
greater choice from these professions. Likewise students considering
veterinary science should note that this is one of the most highly
competitive degree courses at University. The GCSE and A-Level
requirements are very high and work experience expectations very
demanding. You will be expected to have completed 5-6 work
placements in advance of application. Two science subjects at A-Level
and one other academic subject is usually acceptable but students
may be asked for 3 grade A’s in either Biology, Chemistry, Physics or
Mathematics.
Nursing
Applicants must achieve a minimum grade C in a science subject at
GCSE. NOTE: BTEC Science will not be accepted in place of Single /
Double Award. Biology is the preferred subject at A-level. Queen’s Uni-
versity and the University of Ulster do not require students to have a sci-
ence subject at A-level but for those who can offer a science at A-
Level, the overall grade requirement is reduced.
Please consider the above information carefully before making your
decision and please do not hesitate to contact the school if you
require any further clarification.
I hope that after reading this booklet many of you will know what cours-
es to study next year and realise that in St Mary’s you will have the op-
portunity to be guided and supported.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Kidd
Head of Careers, Employability & VEP Co-ordinator
