Dear Friends,

As we, the Kiwanis Club of Bloomington, prepared to celebrate our 80tr anniversary, Itook a few minutes to reflect on why I joined this service organization in October of1994. Perhaps, more importantly, why I have remained an active member throughout theyears.

For me, starting a workweek on Monday mornings, winter or summer, is easier because Iknow I'll gather at lunchtime at The Eds with u !.otrp of people who share not only ameal, but also a common purpose. We make giving back to our community a priority. We are a family sharing laughs, sorrows, and information along with our meal.

Gender, race, religion and economic status have no seat at our table. Whether we arebusing dishes at Pancake Days, parking cars in the sweltering heat, or singing with kids atCamp Limberlost, we are one.

On the day I was inducted into this Club, the members sang You Are A Friend of Ours.Little did I know back then, they really live that song. Sure, I have volunteered manyhours over the years. Beyond a doubt, I receive more from this group than I'll eu"r give.

My challenge to new and old members is to make Kiwanis a priority on your Mondaycalendar. Being an active member naturally follows.

For nearly 25 years Harold served asSecretary of the Bloomington Club. His continuity in that position grounded himdeeply in Kiwanis tradition and procedures. Harold did more thanlust produce aprize-winning newsletter and make sure the committee reports were sutmitted ontime. He made it his function to take each incoming club president "under his wing",providing advice and encouragement to each new leader. Harold did not tell us ,,hozn itwas done." He encouraged us to make our administrations uniquely ours whilepreserving the long traditions of the Bloomington club. Always quietly efficient, working behind the scenes but never intruding himself upon the leadership, Haroldwas the solid backbone of the club through years of changing priorities and attitudes. He remained, quietly serving, discreetly influencing, through many generations ofKiwanis leaders. We are what we are today in great measure becausgof the dedicatedservice of Harold Coffman.

bono/J Ui*on ( o,bln,2s, te2s ),lr zs, zooz)Don Vinson was a "people person." You could not get to know Don without liking him.For many years he was a leader of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club, not to mention the I-IDistrict. If you needed something done, you could ask Don and he would find a way tobe there. Don had an infectious enthusiasm that affected those around him. And, he wasa die hard Chicago Cub fan. Although his enthusiasm for the Cubs did not seem to helpthem much, it provided considerable entertainment for his friends. Don did more thansupport Kiwanis projects. He was there, willing to give of his time to an organization heloved. It is likely that he attended more interclubs than anyone in the BloomingtonKiwanis Club. He was also well known and well liked in the I-I District. He served inmore than onti District Office and usually attended District conventions. Don's recentsudden passing left a deep rent in the fabric of the club. Don Vinson exemplified Kiwanisservice and fellowship to the fullest.

France were tinked. Meanwhile our club chartered the Holy Trinity Builders Club. The

Kiwanis International convention was held in Nice, France. Our club sent a full slate of

delegates, and we worked on Al Provasi's unsuccessful campaign for International

President.

I gg5 In the world the Alfred p Murrah Federal Building was devastated by a bomb and

the uS shuttle Discovery rendezvoused in orbit with Russian space station Mir. Meanwhile

our clubs declining memb"rship becomes a concern and new funding became a priority for

I gg6In the world Madeline Albright was named the first female US Secretary of State

the International convention as a great fundraiser'

These Calling Cards were something like '50 a- *Tlt"'

We thought il was a good fundraising idea' The Club

had to commit to a large amount of cards and

proceeded to purchase about $1000 worth of cards'

We sold quitei few, but we were left with quite a few'

We gave some to speakers, which always brought a

chuckle when President Ron Guthoff handed one to

them. This was a unique fundraiseq, we were just

ahead of our time. By the way, Ron still has some for

sale. AprilFool's was on Monday and Ron ran the

3,*J PrtuingThis decade of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club saw the Club relying on some of the tried andtrue fund raisers and, at the same time, trying some new ventures - some that succeeded andsome thatdidn'tfare so well.

Peanut sales continued to grow each year. The Bloomington City Council, howeve4, voted tooutlaw "canning" on the street corners after 2002. Several Kiwanians attended the councilmeeting when the vote was taken, but their efforts were in vain. Despite some negativepublicity, the club still managed to have record sales from Bloomington and Normal StreetCorners. Wally Yoder's auction also brought in record dollars as he hawked the remaining bagsof peanuts at a regular club meeting.

Parking cars also proved to be a profitable venture. We contracted to park cars at the InterstateCenter during the Corvette showand at the RegionalAirportduringthePrairieAir Show.

The club formed a sponsor committee, which developed a sponsorship campaign for fundingCamp Limberlost; over $20,000 per year is now raised through these sponsorships.

Cheese sales remained steady during the ten years, as the membership seemed to get moreinvolved. Innovative sales promotions, such as Roland Deterding dressing up as a cow, seemedto get the membership mooo-ving on cheese sales.

Pancake Days continued to provide funds for Camp Limberlost. Over the last couple of years, the club added Book Sales, Cheese Sales, a raffle for Beanie Babies and Lollipop Sales to enhancerevenue for Pancake davs.

War on 74IDD Golf Outing- In 2000,200L &.2002, we challenged the Peoria and Champaignclubs to raise money for IDD by asking their members to sponsor several golf teams to competein three outings. The winning club atthe end of the summer (Bloomington,of course) would walk away withbragging rights and funds for IDD.This fundraiser proved to be enjoyableand successful , spurr ing oncompetition between a few of the diehard golfers in the club.

Gumballs have continued to be an easyfund raiser for the club, even thoughthe locations of the machines andrevenue from each one continue to be amystery.

Unfortunately, the Thavel and Adventure Series, Flower Sales, Gift Certificate Sales, and CallingCard Sales fell into the "good while it lasted" category, and were not continued.

Dear Kiwanians,

On this, our 80'n Anniversary, I take a moment to look back at the past and with the help of our fine Kiwanisvolunteers, lead by ticia Manard; another decade of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club is recorded into history. This decade may not seem like history to many of us, as we were here and were very much a part of thisdecade that now is set down in writing and photos for all to read and see forever.

It has been my privilege to be you president during the 80'n year. We have celebrated the milestone withspecial times to remember days from the past and of course this document. Like decades that preceded, therehas been much change, however many projects from the past continue, including Camp Limberlost. Therehave been many changes in the camp and how it has been run from year to yea4 but the principle of helping"Kiwanis Kids" prevails. The camp remains the longest, oldest continuous service project of any size in all ofKiwanis and the same is true in Bloomington-Normal and Mclean County.

With pride we have continued Pancake Days, Cheese Sales, and Peanut Days fund raisers. During the decade,we have continued "TO BUILD", bringing new members and projects to bring help, hope, and happiness toliterally hundreds of young people in Mclean County and around the world.

Sincerely,

Gilbert L. Dorsey
