We seek to instill a tangible pride of our glorious past and build a responsible, culturally sensitive community through heritage travel !

Our Philosophy

Kinchit Kanchi!

Kanchi is a vintage city of India which is still thriving. The sprawling capital of the Pallava Dynasty - one of the earliest organized dynasties to rule this part of India - it

was much larger than what it is today.

Kanchi was inhabited by multi-cultural/religious inhabitants like Buddhists, Jains, Shaivites and Vaishnavites. The beautiful city also had its own warts, a seamy side which is recorded by one of its past rulers and you will hear

about it on the tour!

Mystical Palmyra along with Historian Pradeep Chakravarthy is proud to present to you a Kinchit (a little more) of Kanchi than what is generally known. Our

two day journey will take you to smaller and less travelled towns of the District.

Thenneri

Kanchi, housing one of the oldest structural temples impressed Sembiyan Madevi and her nephew Raja Raja Chola and many rulers of

their times. Thenneri – the Southern Lake – hosts two such examples of ancient Chola temple art and

architecture that await discovery. You must have already seen the grand temples of Kanchi – Come and admire these that not only predate them but have also inspired the great

temples the Chola kings built in Tanjore!

Page 5: Kinchit Kanchi - Mystical Palmyra · temples the Chola kings built in Tanjore! Thirumukkoodal Thirumukkoodal, a confluence of 3 rivers, currently dry, houses a structure that one

Thirumukkoodal

Thirumukkoodal, a confluence of 3 rivers, currently dry, houses a structure that one would

easily mistake for a temple. It is actually an ancient fully functional apothek with a

flourishing medical college. This institution hosted facilities that would exceed those provided by

modern day premier collegesDon’t count this on the list of temples we will see this time – this will be the first heritage hospital

we will visit!

Mamandur Caves

Mamandur is the under discovered cousin of the more famous Mamallapuram.

They are unfinished but give an insight into how cave temples evolved into the larger temples. These also have interesting inscriptions on

Pallava water conservation and writing of farces.

Page 7: Kinchit Kanchi - Mystical Palmyra · temples the Chola kings built in Tanjore! Thirumukkoodal Thirumukkoodal, a confluence of 3 rivers, currently dry, houses a structure that one

Natabhavi

A rare form of a temple for a rare ritual… this is a surprise you have to “dig” deep to find out

more!

Page 8: Kinchit Kanchi - Mystical Palmyra · temples the Chola kings built in Tanjore! Thirumukkoodal Thirumukkoodal, a confluence of 3 rivers, currently dry, houses a structure that one

Sanjeevirayar

The Architecture of this temple depicts the Vijayanagara style as an essential feature. The

structural design is a striking feature. A big complex housing only one sanctum is a unique

architectural feature. There is a 24 pillared Mandapam that houses 85 different Hanumans in

various forms.

Page 9: Kinchit Kanchi - Mystical Palmyra · temples the Chola kings built in Tanjore! Thirumukkoodal Thirumukkoodal, a confluence of 3 rivers, currently dry, houses a structure that one

Mathangeshwarar

Casting aside the ever popular and famous temples flocked by all, we set our sights on a

miniature that is as grand and fascinating as a large canvas.

It is not always that size matters. This one is a little gem and here the small size is going to

dazzle you as much as the big ones!

Page 10: Kinchit Kanchi - Mystical Palmyra · temples the Chola kings built in Tanjore! Thirumukkoodal Thirumukkoodal, a confluence of 3 rivers, currently dry, houses a structure that one

Thiruparuthikundram

The remaining vestige from Jaina Kanchi, the murals reveal a fascinating heritage of Tamil

Jains. Guarded by a fierce lady who is as much of an attraction as the temple … look forward to seeing how harmoniously art has stitched

together Jains and Hindus in our state

Kanchi Kudil

Kanchi Kudil is frozen in time. This century old building has been consciously revived to its old glory and today presents an innocent life style during the pre Victorian times. Let us step back

and savor the bygone days.

Aakkur Kattai Koothu

Kattai Koothu is the art of and for the masses. This rustic art form is performed bang in the middle of the streets without any props and

settings. The audience is held captive with the sheer lung power of the artist be it the dialogues

or the songs. It boasts of its own subtle sensibilities and artistic brilliance.

We will enjoy a spirited performance of Kattai Koothu

Kanchi Silk Weavers

The dexterous fingers playing on the warp and weft of the divine fiber, silk is a spectacular

weaving tradition that has survived centuries and continues to hold our admiration. Everything about this is so unique that it now enjoys the

exclusive GI certification.

Kanchipuram Iddli

The ubiquitous South Indian iddli attains a divine status when it becomes the food for the

gods. This means that the ingredients that go into preparing this prasad also befit the taste of the

divine. The Iddli presented to Lord Varadharaja in Kachivaram is a sacred culinary journey. You

will also be a part of the journey by way of witnessing the making as well as tasting of this

delicious food of the gods.

Hailing from Tirunelveli and moving on to international exposure through KFI, MCC, JNU (Delhi) and LSE (London) in his academic years, Pradeep Chakravarthy has always had a passion for the history and Heritage of Tamil Nadu with special focus on the role that it plays in society then and now. Having a background in HR/leadership development and coaching through his assignments in TVS, Cognizant, Infosys and McKinsey, he constantly explores methods of constructively employing out of the box techniques of exposure to fine elements practiced in ancient times to motivate and hone ones inherent skills. He pioneered temple walks in Madras. His deeply invested interest in the music, food, literature of Tamil Nadu allows him to present succinctly and simply even the dreariest topic in history. He has authored several books and has over 300 articles in The Hindu, Marg magazine, India Express, Times of India etc., to his credit. He has lectured in several prestigious venues like IIC (Delhi), IC (London) and is an awardee from the Tag Foundation.

From the “horses” mouth!!

"This temple trip was different from others. It was not about religion, not about mythology, not even about history. It was about the evolution of human civilization. What was even more interesting, was how Pradeep was able to connect the past to the current way in which we think and act to survive , synergize with others and form strategies to connect with the rest of the society. It would be brilliant,  if we can use this knowledge and 5000yrs of history into our management practices. ” - Vinod Dasari, MD, Ashok Leyland!!We have never felt that Priya and Pradeep are organizers and we are just travelers.  Over the years we have become one family, every body making everyone feel at ease and comfortable – Mythili Chandrasekaran, Ex SBI!!The call was for refreshing “degree”!But the Mystical Palmyra pedigree!Ensured it was so much more --!Places, People, food and tales of yore!Priya and Pradeep pack so much fun!The initiated will seldom shun!Their trips planned with such care!I proudly proclaim they are beyond compare. – J Krishnan, Logistics Industry !!I had a very insightful trip and my appreciation and awe of Indian history and culture is being expanded with each trip. It is also an eye opener as to how a warped version of our history is being taught in schools whereas such phenomenal achievements of our ancestors are being glossed over – Shailesh Vummidi, Jeweler!!It was our first trip with Pradeep and Priya. We never had to think or be concerned about anything.  Every little detail was taken care of.  Living in Delhi, we are surrounded by monuments/tombs reminding us of the Mughals, British and India’s independence.  One always thought that all history was in the north.  This trip opened my eyes to history in the south – Sudha Rajendran, Delhi! ! ! ! !
