Quantum Universe Center (QUC) announced its
inauguration this year at the Inaugural Conference,
‘Quantum Challenge’, held from February 20 to 21 at
the 5th flr. Conference Hall. QUC aims to become a
research activity center for discovering and sharing
new insights on fundamental matters and forces,
condensed matter and emergent phenomena, quantum
information, and quantum inspired mathematics.
Prof. Kimyeong Lee, Director, with nine Professors in
the School of Physics and School of Computational
Sciences, have formed four research groups to conduct
joint studies in quantum information science, string
theory, elementary particles, and condensed matter
physics. The members hope such activities lead to
deeper understandings of Nature and new applications
in real life.
Korea hosted the International Congress of
Mathematicians in 2014, SEOUL ICM 2014. Held
from August 13 to 21, the event was attended by a
total of 5,217 participants from 122 countries, the
highest attendance in the history of ICM.
A total of four KIAS affiliates participated as invited
speakers at SEOUL ICM 2014. First of all, Prof.
Jun-Muk Hwang became the first Korean to be invited
as plenary lecturer at an ICM. Prof. Bumsing Kim,
Affiliate Prof. Ki-Ahm Lee (SNU), and KIAS Scholar
Prof. Keiji Oguiso (Osaka Univ.) were invited to give
sectional lectures.

As a privileged research institute in the field, KIAS
also made major contributions to the success of
SEOUL ICM 2014. In the Executive Organizing
Committee, Prof. JongHae Keum and Prof. Jeong Han
Kim represented KIAS, each chairing the Organizing
Committee for Local Program and the Organizing
Committee for IMU General Assembly, respectively.
Additionally, KIAS hosted 10 satellite conferences
before, during and after the main conference and
offered travel grants and participation grants for
approximately 180 international mathematicians and
300 domestic mathematicians and graduate students
through ICM 2014 Invitation program “NANUM
2014”, ICWM 2014 “Together 2014” project and
KIAS Fellowship for Seoul ICM 2014.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning
honored Prof. Jun-Muk Hwang (School of
Mathematics) with the Order of Science and
Technology Merit, Hyeoksin Medal, of 2014. The
Orders are awarded to those who have significantly
contributed to the progress of national science and
technology at the annual ceremony celebrating
Science Day (April 21) and Information and
Communication Day (April 22). Prof. Jun Muk
Hwang joined KIAS in 1999 and has also received the
Korea Science Award in 2001 and Hoam Prize in
2009 for his research achievements in the field of
Complex Geometry.
Prof. Kimyeong Lee of the School of Physics won the
Korea Best Scientist Award for 2014. Prof. Lee
received this presidential award at the opening
ceremony of Korea Science and Technology Annual
Meeting 2014. He was acknowledged for his academic
achievements on physics of M2 branes and M5 branes
in string/M theory as well as his efforts to create a
science-friendly environment for researchers, students,
and the general public. Staying true to the spirit of this
award, Prof. Lee gave his public talk, “View of the
World Through the Eyes of a Physicist”, to students
and researchers in the following October.

KIAS Highlights in 2014
On March 26, Prof. Bumsig Kim (School of
Mathematics) received the 2014 TJ Park Science
Prize in recognition of his works on the developments
of the quasimap theory in mirror symmetry: the
notion of quasimaps and their wall-crossing formula.
TJ Park Prize is a highly prestigious award sponsored
by POSCO foundation, awarded to those who has
made remarkable achievements in three fields:
science, education, and volunteering.
Prof. Jooyoung Lee's research team of Center for In
Silico Protein Science was invited to give three talks at
CASP11 (the 11th Community Wide Experiment on
the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein
Structure Prediction), held in December 2014.
Notably, Prof. Lee's team achieved the best protein
structure modeling in two categories, template-based
modeling and contact-assisted modeling. Also, the
invitation to the Prof. Lee's team marked as the first
one granted to an Asian team. Prof. Lee's team has
been participating in this bi-annual international
experiment since CASP7.
KIAS built new foundations for international
cooperation through bilateral agreements with
international institutions in China, India, USA and
Switzerland this year. These new alliances have been
forged with plans to organize joint conferences and
participate in joint research projects.
On January 17, KIAS signed an agreement with Tata
Institute for Fundamental Research of India. A
delegation from KIAS, including President JongHae
Keum and Prof. Jaewan Kim, visited TIFR Mumbai
campus and attended the joint signing ceremony at
Delhi. Presided over by the Ministry of Science, ICT
and Planning, the joint ceremony was held while the
President of Korea, Geun-hye Park, was visiting the
city. KIAS is planning to organize a joint academic
program with TIFR in November 2015.

Theoretical Physics (ITP) and Academy of
Mathematical and System Sciences (AMSS) were
forged in June. On June 3, a delegation including
President JongHae Keum visited ITP, CAS in Beijing
for a signing ceremony. The occasion was celebrated
by a series of seminars hosted by the Director of ITP,
AMSS President, where Vice President Kimyeong
Lee and Physics Chair Piljin Yi gave talks.
Approximately two weeks later on June 16, KIAS
signed a bilateral agreement with the Academy of
Mathematics and System Science, Chinese Academy
of Sciences (AMSS, CAS) at KIAS campus to
promote academic excellence through future
cooperation. KIAS-AMSS Joint Conference took
place on this same day. Co-organized by the two
presidents, faculty members from the two institutes
gave talks.
The demand for participation in international projects
and joint research activities in the fields of
astrophysics and cosmology, and high-energy physics
resulted in two more bilateral agreements. KIAS
signed a bilateral agreement with the Inter-University
Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in June for the
usage of DOTIFS (Devasthal Optical Telescope
Integral Field Spectrograph) and exchange of
scientists. Another bilateral agreement with the Space
Sciences Laboratory in UC Berkeley was signed to
participate in the international research project aiming
to develop the Mid-scale Dark Energy Spectroscopic
Instrument (DESI).
A Korean translation of “The Princeton Companion to
Mathematics” was published to honor 2014 Korean
Year of Mathematics. KIAS President JongHae Keum
and 30 research fellows
from the School of

Sir Michael Victor Berry (Univ. of Bristol), the
celebrated mathematical physicist famous for the
Berry phase, was invited to Korea by KIAS and the
Korean Physical Society in April 2014. After giving a
seminar at KIAS on the 22nd April, he proceeded on
to Daejeon to give a plenary talk at KPS Spring
meeting. On the 25th, Sir Berry returned to KIAS to
give his public lecture on 'Making Light of
Mathematics.' In his lecture, Sir Berry described how
mathematics could be applied to explain the physics of
light. It was, as stated in the abstract of the talk, an
“intellectual but nontechnical, and strongly visual”
talk that inspired local high-school students and
college students.
