KFPS NEWS: No. 28 Wednesday 8th September 2021 Principals reportHello everyone, I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well and handling these challenging times. During lockdown we are all online for longer periods of time, whether it is students accessing remote learning tasks or web- sites for school or parents accessing online shopping or information for work. It is important, more than ever, as parents that we are keeping a controlling eye over what our children are doing online. Parents/carers do not need to be cyber gurusto support your child/children to be safe online. The Australian eSafety Commission, funded by the Federal Government, provides many great re- sources to hep you be aware of current online safety concerns as well as guidance as to how to support your child with them. This week is eSmart Week and I encourage families to explore the resources at https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents and start a conversation with your child. Being 'eSmart' does not mean being tech-savvy, it means being able to navigate our 'online world' in a safe and secure manner. The use of online tools during the past 18 months has increased dramatically to the COVID-19 lockdowns and remote learning. So lets all be safe online and protect our personal information and our digital reputation. Parent- Teacher Interviews: We have our Parent -Teacher Interviews being held tomorrow Thursday 9 th September from 3:30pm – 6:30pm and Friday 10 th September from 9am – 12:30pm. Friday 10 th September is NOT a pupil free day so students are required to be undertaking school work or attending parent-teacher interviews with their parent/carer. Now that bookings have been made we will make contact with you as to the mode of communication you may prefer – Phone call or Webex Meeting. SENTRAL PARENT PORTAL: Upon enrolment, each family receives a personalised family code to access the parent portal on Sentral. The parent portal provides you with all the important correspondence and information such as newsletters, semester reports, notes for excursions, calendar of events, attendance and absence days for students and Parent –Teacher bookings. We have noticed a 50% drop in Sentral use this year but it is important that parents/carers use both Sentral and Class Dojo. Class Dojo is used for classroom communication and to access the learning tasks during remote learning. Sentral is our administration communication platform. If you have any problems accessing Sentral please notify the office. Assembly: WebEx assemblies…… NEW LINK FOR THIS FRIDAY A MASSIVE THANKS to our incredible Assembly Team who are joining us remotely each Friday and lead- ing the assembly. They speak so clearly over the Webex and control the online activity over the Webex with incredible skill and enthusiasm. I am super proud of your efforts. Continued…… Our focus value for this week is Respect Given that most of us are working or learning from home – What does this look like in our school or at home? We should be helpful, speak with an inside voice and listen and follow instructions. We speak kindly to one another, we use respectful language when online and we treat our devices with care. NAPLAN Results: We have been very pleased with our results from NAPLAN this year. In each of the Grade 3 and Grade 5 areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar& Punctuation and Numeracy we have achieved our highest result in the last 5 years with our Grade 3 Reading results almost at state level as you can see below!

2022 Foundation Enrolments: By the end of this week our foundation students for 2022 will receive an email with a special link to a welcome video. If you know of a family yet to enrol their child into Foundation/Prep for 2022 and are in our neighbourhood please encourage them to make contact. Our numbers are strong and the enrolment period is almost finished.

Library Book Roundup: It is the end of term library book roundup! If you have any books at home that you have borrowed form our school library, we ask that you return them by next Wednesday 15th September. There will be a Book box/tub at the front door of the school office for you to deposit your books for us to scan in. We would appreciate your support on this. Thanks

Thought of the week

Kind Regards, Kim Saddlier

MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS What is bullying? Bullying is hurtful, aggressive and repeated behaviour that aims to embarrass, threaten or intimidate another person. Bullying can be carried out by an individual or group towards one or more persons and is a complex social problem which can occur in environments such as schools. Researchers agree that there are five key features of bullying behaviour: 1. The person (or people) who engage in bullying behaviour intend to inflict harm or fear upon the target. 2. Aggression towards the target occurs repeatedly. 3. The targeted child or young person doesn’t provoke bullying behaviour by using verbal or physical aggres-sion. 4. Bullying tends to occur in familiar social groups. 5. The person engaging in the bullying behaviour is usually more powerful (either in reality or perception) than the person they’re targeting. This power may be, for example, social, physical or age-related. What bullying isn’t? • Behaviours that don’t constitute bullying include: • mutual arguments and disagreements • not liking someone or a single act of social rejection • one-off acts of meanness or nastiness • isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence. Unfortunately, bullying is relatively common. Here are some recent statistics: • Approximately one in four Australian students are affected by bullying. • Approximately one in seven young people have been cyberbullied • More than three-quarters of students who were bullied online were also bullied offline. Next week – What we do about bullying?
