Maths Information:

• Students started the GCSE in year 9 (from February half term)

• Exam board – Edexcel

• Specification – 1MA1 Higher (9 – 4) or Foundation (5 – 1)

4 is equivalent to a C grade

No D grade on Higher

• 100% exam – three exam papers

all 1 hour 30 minutes

1 x non-calculator and 2 x calculator

• Exams taken at the end of year 11 (May/June 2018)

Page 12: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

• Higher tier will include questions that will stretch the most able

• Foundation tier will focus on core mathematical understanding and skills for all students to master

• A greater focus on problem solving

• Foundation now includes Trigonometry, standard form, simultaneous equations, compound interest, tree diagrams (all previously grade B higher topics)

• Topics from A level maths have moved into GCSE at Higher

Page 13: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

What should students be doing at home and how can you help:

• Regular homework – one piece set every week (mymaths and written)

• Use revision guides - little and often

• Edexcel website specimen papers (closer to the exam)

• Maths at home – gas/electric bills, reading meters, shopping bills, best buys, currency exchange

• Ask to see their books and discuss their maths work

• Students need to ask if they do not understand, all staff are happy to help

Page 14: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

An example: current grade C question

Here is part of Simone’s gas bill. Gas Bill New reading 43 214 units Old reading 43 093 units Price per unit 45p Work out how much Simone has to pay for the units of gas she used.

Page 15: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

Here is part of Simone’s gas bill.

Gas Bill

43214

New reading 43 214 units - 43093

Old reading 43 093 units 121

121 x 45 = 5445

Price per unit 45p £54.45

A typical mistake is for students to use the new reading and not work out how many units have been used, which results in a bill of £19446.30!

KS4 Science at Woking High

Page 19: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

The new GCSE Science courses 1. Triple (or separate) Sciences – 3 GCSEs in

Biology, Chemistry and Physics over 2 years. More Triple Science classes offered this year than ever before.

2. Trilogy – Made up of 1/3 Biology, 1/3 Chemistry and 1/3 Physics. Results in 2 GCSEs.

3. Entry Level and Trilogy – Entry level acts like a ‘stepping stone’ to the Trilogy course. The two qualifications are taught concurrently.

Page 20: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

Who does which course? 1. Triple Science – offered to top 2 classes on

both sides of the year, although students may opt out.

2. Trilogy Science – followed by students in classes X2, Z2, X3a, Z3a

3. Entry Level and Trilogy – followed by students in classes X3b and Z3b.

Page 21: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

What’s changed? • ISAs are gone (!) and have been replaced with

Required Practicals (RP). These are done in lesson time. If absent from a RP the student should book a time with their teacher to catch-up after school. There will be questions relating to the RP in the exams.

• Old Science A and Additional Science were separate GCSEs, whereas Trilogy cannot be separated.

• The exams are longer. Trilogy students will sit 2 papers for each Bio/Chem/Phys. Each paper will be 1hr 15 min long. Foundation and Higher Tiers.

Page 22: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

• Separate Science students will sit 2 papers for each

Bio/Chem/Phys. Each paper will be 1hr 45 mins long. Foundation and Higher Tier.

• The ‘triple’ content of the course is slotted in throughout the 2 years, rather than at the end of Year 11. Means there is more flexibility over Triple/Trilogy.

• The content has become more demanding. Lots of things have moved down from A Level.

• Increased number of equations that students are expected to learn – the equation sheets for Physics have very few equations on them

What’s changed?

Page 23: Key Stage Four Information Eveningfluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com › FileCluster › ...Objectives of the evening • Identify some key features of the Key Stage Four

• AQA have made questions less ‘wordy’.

• Chemistry students are given the Periodic Table, but not the charges on common ions.

• Students will no longer be able to mix tiers – they will have to sit the same tier for all exams

• Moved from letter grades to numerical grades (as for all GCSEs)

What’s changed?

How do WE help?

1. Science Clinic – Wednesday and Thursday 3.30 to 4.30 in S9. Open to all students. Students can either ‘book in’ with their teacher to go over something specific that they need help with or just turn up with an idea of something they’d like to go over.

2. Afterschool catch-up with teachers to go over required practicals.
