KCFE programmes are aimed at:

By September of the year of entry applicants must have:

• Completed the Leaving Certificate, LCVP,

LCA or equivalent

Or

• Have reached the age of 18.

Mature students are exempt from having formal educational qualifications in most circumstances. Entry to the

college is not via CAO. Applicants apply online directly to the college at www.kerryfe.ie. Applicants compete for

places on an interview basis. Places on courses are limited. Early application is advisable.

Entry Requirements:

Apply online at w

ww

.kerryfe.ie | Tel: 066 712 1741

• School leavers who have completed their Leaving Certificate, LCVP or Leaving Cert Applied.

• School leavers who choose to defer their college place. Taking up a place on a further education course

at KCFE will be beneficial to those who would like to gain an insight into a particular area of study before

committing to four years at third level or in order to gain skills such as computer or research skills prior

to taking the huge leap to third level. Acquiring the skills which are taught on a further education (PLC)

programme before college makes for a smoother and easier transition to third level.

• Those who have previously completed a Level 4 programme.

• Those who wish to acquire a further education qualification with a view to using it as an access route into

third level colleges in Ireland using the Higher Education Links Scheme.

• Adults or mature applicants wishing to return to education. (Leaving Cert not necessary)

• Those wishing to either upskill or retrain in order to gain a qualification which will enhance employability.

• Those who have for whatever reason dropped out of a third level programme.

• Third level graduates who need to acquire practical hands on skills which will make them more employable.

Graduates of third level courses who are seeking to upgrade their skills or those wishing to retrain in another

area often participate in KCFE programmes.

Work Experience:One of the many benefits of completing a further

education programme at KCFE is that it incorporates

valuable work experience which gives the student an

opportunity to taste their chosen career and develop

close links with local employers. Relevant work

experience gives an opportunity to put into practice skills

acquired during the programme. Many students secure

employment from their work experience employer at the

end of the placement. Work experience also provides a

valuable opportunity to network in the chosen area.

The work experience programme enhances the

Curriculum Vitae and students leaves Kerry College of

Further Education not just with a qualification but also a

relevant employment history.

The college has a dedicated Work Experience Placement

Officer who engages with employers on the progress

of students while on placement so as to ensure that all

students gain maximum benefit from their placement.

Erasmus:The college is part of the Erasmus Plus scheme which may

provide an option for you to do relevant work experience

abroad. All expenses are paid.

available to support students during their time

with us and to assist in making informed

educational and employment choices. This can

include assisting with researching options

for future study, progression routes, CAO

applications, UCAS (UK third level) as well

as options for studying in the EU. This will be

achieved through presentations and guest

speakers as well as updates on the student

noticeboard and email system. Support will also

be available in researching finance options

such as applications for the SUSI grant and Back

to Education Allowance.

Some students find college can be an anxious

and stressful time with lots of adjustments to

make. Students can have a variety of issues:

academic or college related, personal, or

mental health issues. The Guidance Service offers

support to students who are willing to

engage in change. Students may be offered a

limited number of one to one support sessions

both internal and external authentication. Reports from external authenticators are consistently positive each year

and meet the demands of the various certifying bodies. Many employers contact the college directly in order to

source graduates for employment.

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) QQI has been established as a new integrated agency replacing FETAC, HETAC, NQAI

Kerry College of Further Education offers Level 5 and Level 6 programmes on the NFQ: The National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) is a ten-level system (1–10) giving an academic or vocational value to

awards/qualifications obtained in Ireland. The framework provides you the learner with a structure to compare and

contrast the level and standard of different qualifications.

NFQ levels help indicate how an award can be used for training, education and employment opportunities. Each level

is based on nationally agreed standards of what a learner is expected to know and be able to do after receiving an

award.

KCFE offer a broad range of further education programmes on the National Framework of Qualifications.

These include:

• Level 5 Certificate and

• Level 6 Advanced Certificate

The NFQ is best illustrated using the fan diagram which you see below.

Qualifications Desired by Employers:The courses at KCFE provide, in many cases, the

opportunity to enter the world of work after having

completed either one or two years of study at the

college. The skills taught on these courses are in line with

industry requirements. The college values feedback from

employers and programmes are reviewed on a regular

basis. Industry initiatives benefit the student body as

they ensure that the skills developed on programmes are

moving them towards being employment ready.

Industry Experienced Staff:Many of the teachers at KCFE are educators who have

also worked in industry. This benefits the student as

they experience a learning environment rich in concrete

industry examples.

CV Preparation and Interview Techniques:Guidance is available from the college guidance service

on cv preparation and interview techniques. In addition,

many courses feature access to the FIT initiative where

students benefit from mock interviews and feedback

from an outside body.

Fostering a Culture of Entrepreneurship: The college also encourages entrepreneurship. Many

of our courses contain a start your own business/

entrepreneurship component. The college has several

examples of graduates who are successfully self-

employed and providing employment to others.

Work Experience Programme:Through our work experience programme many students

find employment prior to finishing the course at KCFE.

Employers regularly approach the college when job

vacancies arise and recruit from our graduates.

The Higher Education Links Scheme provides progression

opportunities for learners achieving QQI Level 5 and Level

6 major awards and who are interested in applying for

Higher Education programmes through the CAO (Central

Applications Office).

Put simply, a student who successfully completes a

Level 5 or Level 6 programme at Kerry College of Further

Education may use the qualification as an alternative

access route into third level colleges regardless of how

well they did or did not do in their Leaving Certificate.

Most third level institutions allow access to their Level 6 and Level 7 courses using any QQI Level 5 award and access to Level 8 courses once certain criteria are met. Allocation of places will be on a competitive basis.

The more distinctions someone obtains the greater their

points score will be.

Consult the Student Resources section of the CAO website for the following:• QQI Entry Requirements Look-Up

• Scoring System for QQI Awards

• Quota of places reserved for QQI Level 5 applicants

on Nursing courses

Applicants applying to the CAO via a QQI Level 5 or Level

6 award should ensure that their qualification meets the

minimum entry requirements of the higher education

institution they intend applying to.

Every assistance will be given to registered students as

they make their application to CAO using the QQI award.

Maths: Student on KCFE programmes who did not achieve their

desired grade in Maths for their Leaving Certificate will be

offered an opportunity to gain additional support in this

subject area.

Advanced Progression Routes:Students have an opportunity to advance directly from

some Level 6 KCFE programmes into the second year

of a related programme at Institutes of Technology and

Universities. This is known as advanced progression.

Criteria apply. All agreements are subject to annual

review.

Additional Links with IT Tralee:KCFE have well established links with all colleges in

Ireland and several colleges abroad.

However, as IT Tralee is on our doorstep strong links

have been developed between Kerry College of Further

Education and IT Tralee benefiting students in several

ways:

• Every effort is made to ensure that students gain access

to IT Tralee once they meet the criteria set out. Applicants

can request the QQI Links Document from the college or

alternatively access it from the Student Resources section

of the CAO website as explained earlier.

• Bonus Points: This scheme broadens progression routes

for KCFE graduates who wish to progress to IT Tralee.

Additional points are added to the further education

major award score giving the student credit for coming

through the further education system at KCFE. Graduates

must have achieved a full QQI award and meet certain

criteria.

• Guest Card: The KCFE campus is located next door to the

IT Tralee South Campus. All of our registered students are

entitled to an IT Tralee Guest Card which entitles them to

use facilities in both the south and north IT Tralee campus.

It is not necessary to wait until an offer of a place has been made to apply for financial assistance.

The following are the two main forms of financial aid available for KCFE students:

Financial Supports:

Student Maintenance Grant:This means tested grant is a source of financial help available to students

on full time Post Leaving Certificate/Further Education programmes.

Check out all grant application information on www.studentfinance.ie

SUSI, the grant body, provides a support desk for queries regarding

grants, eligibility and the application process. The support desk can be

contacted at [email protected] or alternatively contact 0761 087874.

Back to Education Allowance:Mature students may qualify for assistance by means of Back to Education

Allowance which allows adults to return to full time education while

continuing to get income support. People in receipt of certain social

welfare payments can retain payments whilst participating on our PLC/

Further Education programmes. All BTEA information is available from

the Department of Social Protection /your local Social Welfare Office.

We are very pleased with the quality of the Level 5 and Level 6 graduates of Kerry

College of Further Education. We have some of the graduates employed here in

the hospital and delivering a first class service in a supervised capacity. We offer a

number of work placements to suitable students of the Medical Secretarial Course,

the Office Administration Course, the Pre-Nursing and the Care Assistants Courses

which enables students to fulfil the requirements for certification. This to us is a

wonderful opportunity to see if the student has the personal attributes and the

practical skills necessary and it often results in paid employment at a later date.

We have found the college liaises well with us as employers and our input from

industry is taken on board when programmes are being reviewed. This ensures that

students graduating from the college have skills which make them employable.

We wish the college all the best as they continue to grow in the coming years.

Moyderwell Mercy Primary School, Tralee has had a very positive experience with

the Post Leaving Certificate Students from KCFE who have been on work experience

with us over the years. I have often approached the college and linked with the Work

Placement Co-ordinator to request placement students. We have had experience

of students from the Classroom Assistant, Childcare, Office Administration,

Computing and Business Courses. The work experience has benefited both the

student and the school. It is an opportunity for me to see first-hand the skill level

and competency of an individual in the workplace setting. Should job vacancies

arise I have no hesitation in recruiting the students who proved themselves while

being on work experience. From an employer’s point of view it is way better than

an interview as you get to know the student beforehand.

We are delighted with the links that we have built up over many years with Kerry

College of Further Education, Tralee. Taking KCFE students on work experience

from both the pre-nursing and healthcare assistant courses has given us a valuable

opportunity to link with the education and training system locally. We find that

the further education system delivered at KCFE is effective in producing graduates

who are well prepared for working in the healthcare industry. The students we get

on work experience are keen to learn, dependable and trustworthy. They come to

us equipped with a high work ethic and people skills. In many cases students of

KCFE become employees with us. It’s hard to let the good students go.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Software DevelopmentCURRENTLY A STUDENT OF: The Level 8 Degree in Software Development at IT Tralee

I joined KCFE as a mature student having previously worked in retail

where I had enough of the long, irregular hours and relatively low pay. A

drive to better myself was the reason I decided to return to education and

I’m glad to say that it paid off.

I did the Software Development Level 5 course at KCFE which was

delivered by subject experts. I had three lecturers each of whom were

always ready to help, advise and support. The course was also linked with

FIT which basically provided students with assistance with CV preparation

and mock interviews. I secured relevant work experience with the help

of the college’s work placement coordinator. At KCFE I benefited from a

wonderful career guidance service and students were made aware of all

the avenues available to them after the course.

Like most mature students you wonder how you will fit in and cope with

college life. Once you start you realise the course content is delivered

from a basic level. You are eased into it and you are given plenty of help.

I enjoyed my time and made some new friends. The course led me to

where I am now which is on the Level 8 Degree in Software Development

at IT Tralee. Having completed the Level 5 made for a smooth transition

to third level. I was not faced with a struggle as I already knew so much

going in. I’m glad I made the decision to choose KCFE.A

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Software DevelopmentCURRENTLY A STUDENT OF: The Level 8 Degree in Software Development at IT Tralee

I chose to embark on the Level 5 Office Administration course at KCFE in

order to enable me to become employable in an office setting. I made the

decision to return to education having spent time as a mother at home

with my child. I wanted a career for myself and I did lots of research on

what courses were on offer. The Office Administration course at KCFE

suited me as it was skills based and geared towards meeting the needs of

those who wanted to work in an office. Initially it took a bit of juggling in

terms of childminding etc but it had to be done to get to where I wanted to

go. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut at home but it was so enjoyable getting

back out there again in adult company.

My experience of the college was very positive. The teachers were

welcoming, professional and accommodating. The software used in classes

was up-to-date and in line with what is required by employers today. The

course boosted my confidence. The skills taught on the course were very

relevant to what employers need in their office staff. Every task was guided

and as the year progressed students were encouraged to become more

independent in task work. I did my work experience locally providing me

with the opportunity to practice skills and learn new ones. The course itself

was the ideal blend of ICT, administration and communication skills.

I secured an internship after the course in the Medical Records Office in

Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee. I spent six months at that learning all about

the hospital systems. Afterwards I gained employment in the Bon Secours

Hospital as secretary to Consultant James Ryan, Endocrinologist. I spent

a lot of time typing clinic letters and doing dictation work. I am currently

working as full time secretary to Mr Kingston, Orthopaedic Surgeon in the

Bon Secours. This involves doing the preparatory work for clinic days and

theatre days. I am in charge of making appointments, dealing with referral

letters, requesting charts, audio transcription etc. The course at KCFE gave

me the tools to find this employment. It’s well recognised by employers. I

am happy to recommend the course and the college.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Sport and Recreation StudiesNOW EMPLOYED AT: Knocknagoshel Gym, Co. Kerry. ALSO A STUDENT OF: Level 8 Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Leisure at IT Tralee

When I finished school I had no Idea what I wanted to do. I had a huge love for sport and activity but wasn’t really sure how that would translate into getting a job. I decided to attend the Sport and Recreation Studies Level 5 course in KCFE, Tralee. I didn’t know what to expect from the course itself but I was just happy to have something to help me progress. I also found out that this would be an alternative way to get into the IT Tralee which was a huge bonus.

My experience of the course itself was hugely positive throughout. I wasn’t the best student in school but it was amazing how much easier it was to apply myself when I liked what I was doing. The course lecturers were extremely friendly and made all the modules interesting. I made a lot of close friends with whom I am still in contact with. I am quite a competitive person and liked the physical challenges of the course such as the outdoor hill walks, gym and sporting modules. It’s amazing for me to look back and see how far I have come knowledge-wise since I started the course. The PLC was the foundation to all of this.

My current part time job in Knocknagoshel Gym was got on the back of the qualification I got from KCFE. I actually have a PLC student on work experience in the gym with me at the moment and it’s funny to think I was in his exact same position only a few years ago.

The PLC’s work placement element gave me real world experience which was invaluable to me in choosing what I actually wanted to do after I finished my studies. The course enabled me to progress on to the Degree in Health and Leisure at IT Tralee. I am currently on course to get a 1.1 honours degree which would have been incomprehensible when I finished school. The year I spent in Sport and Recreation gave me a chance to mature a little and when I entered Health and Leisure I had a much better vision of what I wanted to achieve. I also have started up my own personal training business where I do classes, online coaching and personal training. The confidence I have gained has been incredible.

If anyone feels like they are unsure over their future or don’t have the points to do their 1st choice in college I would recommend doing a PLC course. They give you a good idea of what you are suited for in third level education. As well as this they will help you gain a little more maturity which will help your future studies.

I did my Leaving Cert in St. Brendan’s College Killarney and my aspiration

was to go to University of Limerick to do the Bachelor of Business

Degree. The leaving cert didn’t go to plan for me. I fell short on CAO

points so doing a PLC was plan B for me.

I had my research done; I knew that if I did the Business Studies PLC

course in Kerry College of Further Education it would give me a second

chance. Three students from my PLC course got into the UL Business

Degree including myself. In hindsight I benefited immensely from my

year in Tralee. It helped me mature a bit before moving away from home.

It also taught me how to work to deadlines with assignments. I really

benefited from the Open Learning Centre which was a drop in centre

where I had access to computers during free classes and assistance

from teachers. Modules on the course like accounting, spreadsheets

and communications were very relevant to what I am now doing in UL

and have put me miles ahead of others. The teaching staff were very

approachable.

If you are faced with a choice of repeating the leaving cert or doing a PLC

I would have to say that doing the PLC would be my recommendation. I

felt I had given the leaving cert my best shot. There is too much focus in

the leaving cert on the June exams. The continuous assessment system

you find in PLC suited me better and it was this that helped me secure

my place on the Business Degree in UL.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Hotel and CateringCURRENTLY STUDYING: The Level 8 Bachelor of Business Studies Degree in International Hotel Management at Shannon College

What do you do when you are just five points short of your third level

course? That’s exactly what happened me and that’s why I chose to head

into KCFE and use the PLC in Hotel and Catering as a progression route

into International Hotel Management in Shannon College.

In hindsight it was like fate because I benefited in many ways. I had been

shy and it got me out of secondary school mode. Through the course

I gained a solid foundation in all aspects of the hospitality industry. I

gained work experience in the award winning Ballygarry House Hotel and

also the Ballyseede Castle. I built up a good relationship with the course

co-ordinator and she helped me secure summer work in the luxurious five

star Killarney Park Hotel. This helped me put away some money to fund

my third level.

I graduated with distinctions and I secured my place on the Level 8 Honours

Bachelor of Business Studies Degree in International Hotel Management

at Shannon College which was my original goal. All the knowledge and

experience I got as a result of the Level 5 really set me up for success. It

made me employable in hospitality but also gave me confidence starting

out in Shannon. I would encourage everyone to do a PLC before third

level. I’m very happy to recommend KCFE.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Hotel and CateringCURRENTLY STUDYING: The Level 8 Bachelor of Business Studies Degree in International Hotel Management at Shannon College

I came to KCFE immediately after my leaving cert in Boherbuee, Co. Cork. Childcare was the career area I had my mind set on and I decided that the long commute to Tralee was worth it each day as the course and the college are well respected by employers.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at KCFE and made a great set of friends. The course contained both theory and practice. We had excellent workshops in puppetry, play therapy etc. The workshops really helped me understand the theory. Individual and group assignments formed part of the course aswell as final written exams. I did my work experience in the baby room in Scartaglin Creche and this confirmed to me that I was in the right career area.

I came to KCFE with the intention of staying a year but progressed on to the Level 6 Childcare Management course in the college the following year. This gave me the skills necessary to take on more senior roles in childcare settings. I learned how to plan, organise and implement activities for children. This course is what you need if you ever decide to open up your own childcare business. Again there was work experience in it which I did in Tir na Nóg, Ballydesmond. It was from this work experience that I secured my current employment as a Room Leader in the pre-school. It is a role that I love and feel that I was well prepared for by the end of the course. I have full responsibility for the planning and organising of activities for the children and the supervision of both children and childcare workers in the facility.

Choosing KCFE paid off for me as it led me directly to full time employment just five minutes from home. I had a very positive experience with the college. The quality of teaching was excellent. I had access to good computer facilities and the college was open early in the morning and late in the evenings which suited me as I was getting a lift with someone who was working in Tralee. I would strongly recommend KCFE as a number one choice for people who either want employment or to get a good grounding in a subject area before progressing further.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Veterinary Assistant/Animal CareNOW: Self Employed (Owner of Muddy Paws Dog Grooming Business, Listowel)

For me choosing to do the Animal Care/Veterinary Assistant course at KCFE represented a change of career. I had previously studied childcare after doing the Leaving Cert in Presentation Secondary School Listowel but it was not for me. I was always very interested in animals and was confident that with proper training I could make a career for myself in it.

I was delighted to secure my place and really enjoyed the year. The course contained specialised veterinary modules delivered by a qualified and experienced vet. No matter what question we posed to her she could always answer it. I did my work experience in Tadhg Horan Veterinary Practice in Listowel. The course content was very relevant to what I was doing in the practice. I got to work in the veterinary shop, watched the surgeries being performed and went out to farms doing herd tests. During the course I particularly enjoyed guest speaker and animal behaviourist/psychologist Karen Davison. The teachers I encountered were very helpful and friendly.

Little did I know the first day I walked in the door of KCFE that I would one year later own my own dog grooming business. It’s called Muddy Paws, it’s based in Listowel and I provide a dog grooming service aswell as a day care facility for animals. The business has taken off much better than I would ever have dreamed. It’s hard work but I am very proud of my achievements. I take pride in delivering a quality service to the public. I am very happy to have been chosen as a success story this year for KCFE and would very much recommend the college.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Veterinary Assistant/Animal CareNOW: Self Employed (Owner of Muddy Paws Dog Grooming Business, Listowel)

Utterly devastated was how I would describe the way I felt the day I got my leaving cert results. I was short twenty points for Nursing and there was no way I could face repeating. I couldn’t give up on my dream and was aware that doing a Level 5 in Nursing would give me a second chance at getting in.

I rang KCFE and got a warm, reassuring and helpful response from the secretary. I completed an online application and they organised an interview for me. When I secured my place I was determined to put down my head for the year and make the system work for me. I wanted Nursing and I was going to fight for it. The teachers delivered classes from a place of experience. While they were educators they had also worked as nurses and so what I received was a very practical grounding in what the career of a nurse entails. Through work experience I got to experience the real world of nursing. The placement helped so many of my classmates who were struggling with being unsure of whether nursing was the career for them. The college is a nice environment to come into. Class sizes were conducive to practical work and skills like referencing and assignment layout were taught. If you are unsure of what you want to do career wise or feel you are a bit young for college then KCFE offers you a safe way of taking smaller steps and helps you find your way. Not only did PLC give me a second chance it also gave me a qualification as a carer. The year went by so quickly and it was a real eye opening experience.

I will always remember the day I got accepted into the Nursing Degree at IT Tralee. I had tears of happiness in my eyes and it was all the more special for having made it through the QQI system. My message to school leavers is that it’s not the end of the world if you haven’t the required points after the leaving cert and coming through QQI has so many advantages.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Applied Social StudiesPROGRESSED TO : The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology at UL

I came straight from leaving cert into the PLC in Applied Social Studies at Kerry College of Further Education. For me doing a PLC was my primary goal. There were many reasons why I chose the college and the course. I knew people who had gone to the college and did very well for themselves as a result. When I attended interview I had a really good feeling about the place and the teachers who interviewed me. The reason I chose Applied Social Studies is because I have brothers with Autism and I have always been fascinated about how people interact with each other and how and why they behave in particular ways. I was very interested in the psychology of people. The college provided a very different atmosphere to secondary school. It was much more relaxed. It allowed me to concentrate for a full year on a subject area that interested me. I enjoyed the workshops very much. The college supports and facilities were very good. The course co-ordinator was a constant support for the year and provided much appreciated advice. As I progressed through the course I knew that I had chosen the right career area for me. I used the course to assist me in progressing to a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology at University of Limerick. My advice to leaving cert students is to explore all your options. Picking a four year degree is a big commitment and should only be done if you are certain it is right for you. Doing a PLC after leaving cert gives you so much confidence.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Applied Social StudiesPROGRESSED TO : The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology at UL

My year in Kerry College of Further Education made a positive and lasting impression on me. I had a good leaving cert which I had completed in a boarding school in Roscrea. However, I dropped out of my chosen third level course and found myself a little lost. I spent a while working in retail, became a sailing instructor and also worked as an SNA. It became obvious to me and those around me that I had what it took to make a good teacher and I set about making it a reality.

I took up a place at KCFE on the QQI Level 5 Engineering course and used it as a method of getting back into education. I hadn’t done engineering or technical graphics for the leaving cert but I knew it was an area I had an aptitude in. If I wanted to secure a place in Engineering Teaching in University as a mature student I would have to be able to prove at an interview that I was able for it and so making a success of the PLC in the subject area would allow me to do just that. I enjoyed the classes and found teachers had a very practical approach to everything. During my year in KCFE I got involved in an indoor soccer team and a few competitions all of which added to the experience.

I am grateful to the college for providing me with the opportunity to get myself back on track. As a result of doing the PLC I secured a place on the B Tech (Ed) in Engineering and Materials Technology at the University of Limerick. PLC opens doors for people. My time in KCFE was inspirational and as I go through my teacher training now I know the difference good teaching can have on an individual.

GRADUATE TESTIMONIALS

Born in Africa I have been in Ireland ten years. When I gained my Stamp 4 I set about making life better for myself in this country. I was terrified at the thought of returning to education as a mature student but I’m glad I had the courage to do it. I can only speak good things about the college and the Multimedia with Graphic Design course. I received constant encouragement from the course co-ordinator, teachers and guidance counsellor. I felt accepted by staff and students. I was elected the class representative and enjoyed it. I was always looking forward to going into KCFE. The environment was very nurturing and I felt cared for. The teachers brought out the best in me. It was a special experience. KCFE was life changing. It was a bridge that got me to a place of hope and opportunity. I miss the college and the people I met there. To people from other countries considering further education I would say go for it. You will be treated so well and it will get you into the Irish education system. The college develops a good work ethic in you and it prepares you very much for what is involved in higher education. I am now doing the Level 8 BA Degree in Animation, Visual Effect and Motion Design at IT Tralee.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Carpentry and Joinery and Level 6 Furniture MakingNOW EMPLOYED BY: Flynn Construction in London

Enrolling on the Level 5 Carpentry and Joinery course in KCFE was always my intention after my Leaving Cert in St. Michaels’ Listowel. The college was a right fit for me as its focus was on teaching skills. I spent most of my days in a woodwork room. I enjoyed the course so much that I decided to stay on for an extra year to complete the Level 6 Furniture Making. My favourite part was making bespoke furniture. Work experience with a local kitchen maker gave me an insight into the industry. A business module on the course gave me a good idea of what would be involved in setting up a business. The course was excellent preparation for the Degree in Wood Technology and Sustainable Construction which I afterwards undertook at IT Tralee. I am currently happily working with an Irish company called Flynn Construction in London. I am considering returning home to set up a kitchen design business. I am very happy to recommend KCFE as a college based on the great support I got while I was there.

At the age of 27 with no third level qualification I knew it was time to get serious. I had a passion for cooking and decided to sign up for the Level 5 Professional Cookery course in KCFE. I was fearful at the beginning often questioning whether or not I was cut out for study and all that goes with returning to education as a mature student. I’m glad that I took the decision to go back because I felt very much at home in KCFE. There was hard work involved but I got the support I needed. The course was a perfect blend of practical cookery and theory. The chef teacher expressed her faith in me from an early stage and that made a massive difference to me personally. As a result of doing the Level 5 I am now a qualified Commis Chef. While doing the course in KCFE I became aware of the ITT Certificate in Culinary Arts Immersion Programme. The Rose Hotel, Tralee where I did my work experience for the PLC sponsored me for this programme and so I was able to secure my place. What this means is that they paid my college fees and I am now in college three days a week and at work in The Rose Hotel two days a week. I wouldn’t have gained the sponsorship without the work experience part of the Level 5 course at KCFE. My message for anyone thinking about returning to college is there really is nothing to be fearful of. Just get up and do it.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Legal Studies/Pre-University LawPROGRESSED TO : The Level 8 Criminology Degree at UCC

I realised half way through a Level 8 Bachelor of Arts Degree in NUIG that the course was not for me. I felt very unsure of what career path to take but remembered from secondary school the Guidance Counsellor pointing out the benefits of doing a PLC if you were any way unsure of yourself.

I applied for Pre-University Law at KCFE. The course was assignment based with some written papers also at the end of the year. Everything was taken step by step. During the year I did mock interviews, presentations, individual and group assignments and exams. The student support and career guidance services were fantastic and were delivered with a high level of professionalism. I made many friends whom I still keep in contact with. I enjoyed a few course related trips with classmates during the year especially our trip to Limerick Prison. My knowledge of the legal system was further enhanced when the class got to view a court case at the local court.

The Pre-University Law course has several links with third level institutions and we got to sit in on a Criminology lecture in UCC to see what it was like. I graduated with nine distinctions from KCFE enabling me to get accepted into the Level 8 Criminology Degree at UCC where I am very happy. My choice to come to KCFE was the best decision I’ve made and I would not be where I am today without it.

KCFE GRADUATE OF: Level 5 Legal Studies/Pre-University LawPROGRESSED TO : The Level 8 Criminology Degree at UCC

Doing the PLC in Nursing Studies at KCFE in Tralee had a very positive impact on my life. It gave me an insight into what I wanted to do for my career. I had previously been in college in Galway. The course I had been studying just didn’t suit me and when I dropped out my confidence had taken such a bashing and I was forced to re-evaluate everything. I realised that I had always wanted to do Nursing but somewhere along the line I had been side-tracked.

While I was obviously a bit nervous about starting out on a new journey I was determined to ensure that this would not be another mistake. The year in PLC was the makings of me and restored my confidence. The teachers were excellent and the small class size gave the opportunity to ask questions and really benefit. I did work experience in Fatima Nursing Home in Tralee and got used of providing patient care from an early stage.

As a direct result of doing the Nursing PLC I secured a place on the BSc Honours Degree in General Nursing at Dundalk IT. I headed to Dundalk with confidence in myself and knew that I was making the right choice.

My advice to those doing the Leaving Cert is to strongly consider doing a PLC whether you have the points or not before going on to third level. You can’t compare someone who goes straight from school into college with someone who has done a PLC. By doing a PLC you will get such a solid foundation in the subject area and you will have no fears about making the incorrect choice because you will know at the end of the year whether you are cut out for that career area or not.

I recently qualified as a General Nurse. I was presented with the President’s Prize for Academic Excellence for gaining the highest academic GPA score in the School of Health and Science in Dundalk IT. It was a very proud moment for me. I am now working as a Nurse in the Accident and Emergency Department of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

CURRENTLY: A final year student of the KCFE Sports Therapy programme

I am currently a final year student of the two year Sports Therapy course at KCFE. Sports has always been a big part of my life. I’ve been involved with local teams since I was very young and always had an interest in the area of sports injuries and physiotherapy. At KCFE I have received excellent tuition from teachers who really invested time into making my experience of learning a positive and interesting one. The course is very interesting and focuses on exercise, sports nutrition, massage, gym instruction and physiotherapy.

There is more to the college though than study. I have been presented with opportunities to get involved in Futsal, clubs and societies, competitions, etc. I am also the class representative and I am on the student council.

I got my work experience with Michéal Lynch, Chartered Physiotherapist in Tralee. This has been so beneficial to me. It has allowed me see just how relevant my sports therapy ITEC and QQI course is to the world of work. I have also volunteered as a physio assistant with Shannon Rangers. I really enjoy this type of work.

The college places a lot of emphasis on helping you to get from where you are to where you want to be. I will be qualified as a sports therapist in the next few months and I have many options open to me. I can go directly into work or become self-employed which appeals to me. Some of the students in the course intend progressing to the PE teacher training course at UCC. Others intend to use it as an access route to Physiotherapy courses abroad.

KCFE is a natural next step for school leavers. I am happy to recommend the college based on my positive experience.
