MORTGAGE NEGOTIATORS

We will negotiate your Mortgage for you!

Hi James,I run a seasonal business which tends to be very busy at mid term, Easter and throughout the summer. I normally employ school going teenagers during the busy periods. What paper work should I have on each employee.

James says:The summer months often see employers inundated with young persons trying to land themselves an elusive summer job however all parties should be aware of the existence of the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996.The law does not allow children (that is, those aged under 16) to be employees apart from in very restricted circumstances, for example (1) to take part in a film (2) children aged over 14 may do light work outside school term and (3) children aged over 15, but under 16,may also do light work and this may be during school term. In any of the above circumstances there are restrictions on the number of hours that may be worked and when the work may be done, with a complete prohibition on work between 8pm and 8am.Young people (those between 16-18 years of age) may become employees but there are restrictions on the maximum hours that can be worked and generally the work cannot be between 10pmand 6am. A young person can be employed on general duties in a licensed premise up to 11pmon a day that does not immediately precede a school day. An employer of a child or young person must:Obtain a copy of the person’s birth certificate; If a child is being employed, obtain a letter of consent from the child’s parent / guardian; Keep records of the employee’s details such as date of birth, and of the hours worked; and Provide pay slips.

The national minimum wage is set at€8.65 per hour. This does not mean that everyone is automatically entitled to receive this. Young people aged under 18 are only guaranteed up to 70% of the national minimum wage which is€6.06 per hour. An employer is, of course, free to pay more than the minimum wage if they wish, but are not required to do so by law.

9% INCREASE IN TOURISTS TO OUR SHORES IS FURTHER PROOF THAT N86 UPGRADE IS REQUIRED

Labour Party TD, Arthur J Spring welcomes the announcement by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) that 2014 has seen an increase of 618,500 (8.9%) in overseas visits to Ireland when compared to 2013 figures. In total there were 7,604,400 million visits to Ireland

in 2014. Deputy Spring states, “This government has consistently displayed that it values the importance of tourism to Ireland. There are now 140,000 people employed in the accommodation and food sector alone with an estimated employment figure of 200,000 in the sector as a whole.” The following tourism initiatives since 2011 have led to continuous growth in the sector. • the reduction in the level of VAT applied to a range of labour-intensive tourism services to 9% providing a much needed support to this sector of the economy. • large reduction of employers’ PRSI for those on modest wages. This will make it much more attractive for tourism employers to give people a chance to take up work. • introducing a tourist visa waiver, for those with a valid UK visa for certain countries, which will make it easier for tourists from emerging economies to visit Ireland without the cost or hassle of applying for a separate Irish visa • supporting a strong focus, through the Tourism Marketing Fund on our major source markets, including the UK, in order to take advantage of the additional opportunities presented in 2011 by the visits of Queen Elizabeth and President Obama.

Deputy Spring believes that Government strategies to develop and support tourism such as the decision to maintain the 9% VAT rate on tourism services, the funding of marketing blitzes in target markets and the reduction of Air Travel Tax to 0% have encouraged tourists to visit our shores. “The continuous growth in the number of annual visitors to Ireland is good news for County Kerry as the economy in our county is heavily reliant on tourism. The Wild Atlantic way has to be constantly promoted as it is a feature of our coastline that can be sold internationally. Ireland is now seen as a destination which provides good value and it is imperative that all stakeholders in the tourism industry continue to work together and build on our inherited assets of beauty, friendliness, heritage and culture to ensure that the tremendous growth in tourism figures continues into the future.”

Kerins O Rahillys 10K – 1st Feb 2015Last minute advice and information

So the time has arrived, the inaugural Kerins O Rahillys 10k will take place this Sunday at 10am starting outside the club house. The last few days before the race should see you doing very little running. Make sure you eat a high- carbohydrate diet and drink plenty of uids over the next few days and rest up as much as possible. Drop down to the clubhouse tomorrow to register or collect your number, the number pick up time tomorrow is between 11am and 8pm. Spend the Saturday relaxing and avoid any foods you haven’t tried before, this is not the time to experiment, stick to want with you know best and get to bed early. On race day wake up slowly, eat a good breakfast and put on your gear which should have been laid out the night before, you shouldn’t be looking for anything on the morning of the race for example shoes or socks. Check the weather to see if you need to take extra clothing with you. Arrive at the race early, no later than 30 minutes and line up in the appropriate position at the start that is suitable with the time you expect to run the event, but most of all relax and enjoy the day.

Some important information for the day, the race starts at 10am sharp, walkers will start with the main eld at the back of the eld and teams have to register on the Saturday at the clubhouse. The changing rooms will be open on the day for all the participants. There will be refreshments and music afterwards at the clubhouse with the prize giving ceremony at 12 noon. John Grin who won the Dublin Marathon on two occasions in 1988 and 1989 will be starting the race and Sean Walsh the great Kerry footballer from the 1970’s will be handing out the medals. It promises to be a great day you can register tomorrow at the clubhouse between 11am and 8pm, so come on and sign up and don’t miss out on this great sporting event in Tralee.Marcus Howlett.

Wouldn’t it be great to start off the the new with your very own personal calorie counter! Someone who would watch what you eat, and make sure that you didnt go overboard with your calorie intake as you try to shed those pounds that suddenly appeared in the lead up to and over Christmas , Well thats exactly what Mozarts restaurant have done with the launch of their new tasty Low Fat Menu that has a calorie counter built in !” We have spent time developing a menu that ticks all the boxes that a good menu should “ says Siobhain Colbert of Mozarts. “Wide Variety , well priced , healthy quality foods for you to choose from but with the added benefit of having the calorie count built in”“Our dish selection ranges from Mexican Enchiladas to Moroccan Chicken, from Asian Noodles to Indian Curry “ says Lilian Holmes but the highest calorie count is only 575 calories going down to 260 calories”

We feel we are the only restaurant in Tralee focused on healthy quality foods infused with herbs and spices to create dishes to tantalize the pallet. .Our flavors are dictated by countries such as Mexico, Asia, India, North Africa as well as European countries and we felt the time was right to do what we feel is good for our customers. We have had a great reaction since we launched the menu , especially from people involved in the various slimming clubs such as Unislim, Weightwatchers, Motivation etc as we offer them 10 % discount from this menu when they show their membership cards .We find that people come in, select from this menu and eat together and most of all , have a good time while doing so. Isnt that what eating out is supposed to be ? “says Siobhain

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CONSUMER RIGHTSDURING SALESQuestionWhat are my consumer rights when I buy something in the sales? Can I return sales items?

Answer Your consumer rights during a sale are exactly the same as at any other time of the year.

Goods should be of merchantable quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described. If they are not, you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. The legislation does not specify whether it is the retailer or the customer who decides which form of redress is offered.

If you have a problem with goods that you bought at full price and are now on sale at a reduced price, you are entitled to a refund of the full price (if the shop is willing to offer a refund).

However, you are not entitled to a refund because you change your mind about something you have bought in a shop, whether this is during the sales or at any other time of the year. Many shops do allow you to exchange goods that you have had second thoughts about, but this is at their discretion. It is a good idea to check the shop’s refund policy before buying anything.

If you buy goods at full price but change your mind about them, and they are now on sale at a lower price, you may only be offered the reduced amount (if the shop is willing to offer a refund). You should always keep your receipts as proof of purchase and the price paid. For more information, visit the website of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission at consumerhelp.ie.

ARDFERT COMMUNITY STANDS BEHIND JIMMY COLLINS

Sinn Féin’s Martin Ferris TD has spoken out in support of an Ardfert man whose shop has been broken into three times in the space of a few months.Deputy Ferris said:“The whole community of Ardfert is supporting Jimmy Collins who has been the victim of crime three times in as many months.“The kind of people who target a small local shop and take advantage of a gentleman like Jimmy should not get away with it and I call on anyone information about these crimes to go to the Gardaí “It is unfortunate that the people who commit such crimes can target areas where the presence of local guards is a thing of the past. “I hope that Jimmy Collins will recover from his ordeal and that he knows the support he has locally.” Picture shows Justin Horgan standing outside his uncles shop, Jimmy Collins , 73 years old .

This European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (25-31 January 2015) CervicalCheck are asking women in Kerry to call Freephone 1800 45 45 55 and receive a free Pearl of Wisdom pin, the symbol of the European cervical cancer prevention campaign. While over 76 per cent of women in Kerry aged 25 to 60 have attended CervicalCheck, it is vital that they continue to attend free, regular cervical screening as this is the most effective method to reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer. Women are asked to

wear or share their Pearl of Wisdom with someone they care about aged 25 to 60, and remind her how easy it is to arrange a regular free smear test. Ways to help:• It takes seconds to check when a smear test is due, register or change personal details or find a convenient smear taker at: www.cervicalcheck.ie or Freephone 1800 45 45 55. • Talk with friends and family, let them know they can check when their next smear test is due at: www.cervicalcheck.ie. • If you use Twitter or Facebook, why not post a photo wearing your Pearl of Wisdom and let your followers know how important it is to have regular smear tests. It only takes a few minutes, is free and could save a life. We are using the hashtag #sharethewisdom to remind women in Ireland aged 25 to 60. During European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, CervicalCheck are partnering with the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) to promote awareness about cervical cancer prevention. The Pearl of Wisdom is being distributed by IFPA to over 20,000 women across the country.

The play is set in a public house somewhere in the author’s head.! God help us all!The time is The Past, or Present, or Both. Who knows. It’s a Time Warp. Two stories unfold within its walls. The same bar is populated by two sets of Owners/Customers in different Times/Worlds. An Irish Twilight Zone! One tale is of lopsided love which ends in tragedy, and the other is of love lost by silence. Somehow the stories get intertwined. Strong adult themes permeate throughout the play. There are a couple of occasions where there is crisscrossing of characters, or link-ups within the bar. Glitches shall we say. When this happens the characters in question do not see or acknowledge each other. They don’t know that the others exist. However they may experience a presence or a smell, etc. The Cast includes Rory O Mahony, Raphael Crowley, Mags Slattery, John Connolly, Mary Mills, Aoife Ni Chonchubhair, John Fraher, Eoin

Nolan, Noel King, John Patton, Tim Landers and George Lowe.

Local tourism businesses encouraged to compete for an ‘ITA’ Businesses from across Kerry are being encouraged to participate in the Irish Tourism Industry Awards 2015 - the first ever national scheme to identify and celebrate those leading lights that are making a difference in the tourism industry and actively contributing to recent growth in the sector. The Irish Tourism Industry Awards – dubbed the ‘ITAs’ – seek to identify those players in the tourism sector who have made a difference and are setting an example for the rest of the industry.Encouraging businesses in Kerry to get involved, Eamonn McKeon CEO of the Irish Tourist Industry Confederation said: “With these new awards, we now have a high-profile platform to sing the praises of local tourism high achievers. We are looking to identify those who set the standard for others in the industry to aim for, with their achievements serving as ‘lessons’ in how to get things right. I am more than confident that Kerry is well placed to provide such examples.” Tourism businesses throughout the country and overseas are being invited to apply and submit their examples under 11 different categories (see editor’s note for more detail) by Monday 16th February. The Irish Tourism Industry Award winners will ultimately be announced at an Awards Event on 24th April 2015. Mr McKeon continued -“I look forward to many great applications from Kerry, to compete

with their tourism peers and raise the profile of the great work going on in the county.” Full details of the awards and application process are available at www.irishtourismindustryawards.ie

Much to the disappointment of many, including the gang here at Tralee Advertiser,The Many Voices of Mark Leen and the legendary DJ Curtin only played two dates in the Kingdom. Both were sold

out and both nights saw the crowd on their feet a number of times, Michael (Fox) O Connor said,” I attend a lot of shows but this was very special.”Both Tralee men were on top form, and normally you would see and empty seat here or one there in Siamsa, but every seat was taken. The Bishop couldn’t get a seat, and they delivered the magic for the audience. Joe Murphy aka (The Vicar) manager at St John’s Listowelsaid “It’s great to see two Kerry men who can put the crowd in the palm of their hands like that and put on a world class show,we couldn’t have put another person into the theatre, we were stuffed and the crowd loved it”The Tralee show was much the same, with people calling Siamsa Tire long after the show sold out on the Tuesday before it was unveiled.John Lynch the great singer from The Playmates and an employee at Siamsa said “They did Tralee Proud, we all know what DJ can do, but Mark really surprised everyone with his new show, it was just fabulous.”People waited in the foyer to congratulate both men on their performances and no expense was spared in mounting the production, with a giant LED screen being broughtin from the UK.People were stunned at the show Mark Leen gave us said Maria Hickey from Tralee, “I’ve loved DJ Curtin’s voice for years but Mark must have been working on this for ages,I couldn’t get over all of the voices he could mimic and impersonate, not to mention the costumes, wigs, hats etc..”.A promoter from Ennis John Joe Cronin drove down for the show and said; What a show....... “The Many voices of Mark Leen” First half DJ Curtin walks on stage, sits down on a stool and sings

song after song taking us back on a nostalgic trip down memory lane which I could have listened to all night ... but unfortunately time dictates that the first half of the show has come to an end and so to a standing ovation DJ leaves the stage ..... I can see why they love him in Vegas and also why they love him in Kerry. Second half and as we say in Ireland, the bigger half as it was that little bit longer than the first ..... but sure it had to be to fit in all the amazing voices performed by the multi talented Mark Leen. What can I say; from Cab Calloway’s Minnie the Moocher, to Christy Hennessy, from Liberace to Elvis, from Johnny Cash to The Bee Gees, and many more. Mark performed each style and genre with ease displaying an amazing ability to mimic the artists he was singing with such amazing skill and vocal artistry as I had never witnessed before. But there was more ...... The voice of Richard Burton, Peter Falk (Columbo), Jackie Healy-Rae and even Kermit the Frog but no Miss Piggy. And there is more ..... As Mark played both the Saxophone and Clarinet which DJ Curtin’s brother Billy had thought him to play. I was privileged to have been at such a show. When this show comes to a theatre near you .... go and see it.”Mary Dolan from Tralee enjoyed the show and attended with husband Paul, she added;“ I’m just back home after spending the evening in Siamsa Tire Theatre at The Many Voices of Mark Leen Show. The show was opened by Mr D.J. Curtin - what a voice....he performed for a good hour and he sang the songs we all know and love, and everyone in the theatre was singing along. A short break and then Mark Leen came on stage. Well all I can say is WOWSER..... he was brilliant. The audience just loved him and he really entertained - Mark is a brilliant entertainer - and showed just how good he is at impersonating so many singers and celebrities, he’s a fabulous comedian, and a really terrific singer and musician, covering all genres of music. We really got our money’s worth.”Mark is now satisfied that the show he has created is something which will be received well around Ireland and he plans to tour his Many Voices of Mark Leen show in the Autumn. We here at Tralee Advertiser will be first to let you know when the dates become available, and we wont miss out this time.

Bexblah BeautyHello everyone! Happy Friday! This week on Bexblah Beauty I’m going to be talking about my most used products of January, my January Favourites, but not just any favourites, my skincare ones! At this time of year it seems everyone’s skin plays havoc with them so I said I’d review some of my skincare favs of January.

JANUARY FAVOURITES – Skincare Special!

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in the shade 01 Rose Shimmer

After playing with all my red and berry shade lip products throughout autumn and Christmas I was tired of that look. My mom actually got this in a sample size (5ml) in a Clarins gift set and I ‘borrowed’ it. I initially took it because I loved the smell, I smell EVERYTHING before I use it, but I’m loving the ‘your lips but better’ look this lip gel gives. My lips look soft, smooth, shiny and plump with a subtle colour but not as sticky as a normal gloss would leave them. I have used this stuff none stop all month, and as it’s only a sample size, it’s looking like I will most definitely be repurchasing very soon. Because of the cold weather my lips had dried out a bit but this stuff has repaired my chapped lips leaving them fabulously moisturised. Even those this product is quite sheer, it is perfect alone or on top of your favourite lip colour to compliment it. There are 6 different shades from Nude Shimmer to Candy Shimmer. 10/10 from me! Trilogy CoQ10 Booster SerumAgain, this ever changing weather has been playing havoc with my skin! Between that and having a very sociable Christmas, my skin was left feeling lifeless and dehydrated, two things I do not want my skin to be. I have used this everyday throughout January and my skin is glowing! The serum leaves my skin radiant, plump and so soft. It has

totally replaced my moisturiser. It’s also great for minor breakouts as it contains Tamanu oil which has skin healing properties. I also love the smell of this; it smells like I just had a facial in a spa, amazing. It’s also one of the more affordable serums on the market. La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ I never used the original Effeclar Duo but I heard so much about this product that I had to see for myself what all the hype was about. This stuff promises: … 1) Clinically proven to correct the appearance of blemishes. 2) Unclogs blocked pores. 3) Helps to refine skin texture. 4) Controls the appearance of shine. 5) Fights against the appearance of marks. I can gladly say, it does all of the above! Being an ongoing sufferer of acne, this has made my skin look and feel so much better. My biggest problem is clogged pores or blackheads, I’ve been using this for about 4 weeks now and it has vastly reduced that problem. It honestly starts working from day 1. It can also be used as a makeup primer, and works really well keeping my makeup in place as well as eliminating shine. For €20, you’d be mad not to have this product in your beauty bag!

So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my current skincare favourites. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at [email protected] or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah.

Bexblah Fitness!Hello Everyone! Week 1 in Manor West Fitness Center & Zero Gravity fitness is going well. As I’m typing this I’m mentally preparing myself for a spinning class in the morning, I’ll tell you all about that next week, this week it’s all about firsts.

CONSULTATION:In exactly 12 weeks I will be celebrating my 21st birthday! If that doesn’t motivate me nothing will! It’s a great incentive to have and I plan on definitely being at least 2 dress sizes smaller by then!

Last Saturday, I had a full consultation with Catriona. She is so lovely and easy to talk to which made the consultation enjoyable. We went through everything, and I mean everything, weight, height, size, measurements, short term goals and long term goals. My first goal being a size… or two, smaller for my 21st in April, my second is that I reach my goal weight by the end of the year. We also went through what exercise I’ve done before, what I like don’t like and all that fun stuff. Catriona made me feel very at ease during the consultation and the hour absolutely flew! She then told me she’d work on a plan with my trainers, Chris & Wayne. She also told me that Daniel will be covering all things nutrition. I met Daniel, who knows all there is to know about how important the right nutrition is vital to reach your goals. He gave me four sheets in which I will fill in 4 days of everything I eat. When I give them back to him, he will go through them and work on a nutrition plan with me. It’s not 80% diet and 20% training, it’s 100% of both, if you don’t give it your all you won’t see the best results possible. FIRST SESSION WITH WAYNE:After my weekend of chilling, I met with Wayne on Monday. He tested my fitness, flexibility and strength so that he could make a programme exactly to suit me. A programme that I am able

for but will still challenge me and make me work hard. The test was no walk in the park though, I was pushed to see what my body was able for in terms of what weight I can lift. We trained my legs, all of my back, arms and core. I did at least 3 different variations of squats and my legs were like jelly on Tuesday, it was a good pain though. On Tuesday I did 30mins of HIIT cardio on the crosstrainer and the rower. Wayne explained how it’s scientifically proven that 30mins of HIIT cardio is what our bodies need to burn calories and fat. He also recommended I do a spinning class this week and on the days I go to the gym that I do my weight training before my cardio. He also told me about the importance of recovery/rest days and not to do more than three days in a row of the gym as that can hinder my progress. I am meeting Wayne again Friday to get my strength and conditioning programme to do by myself. I will be meeting with Wayne once or twice a week and on the other days I will have a programme to follow. I really like the layout and atmosphere in Manor West Gym. It’s spacious and bright. There are huge motivational pictures on the wall going from one section of the gym to the other, which really pepped me up! As Annie says, “I think I’m gonna like it here!”

Beef Stew in Red Wine Sauce

Preheat the oven to 140°. In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, melt the butter in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Arrange the meat in the casserole in a single layer and season with salt and pepper. Cook over moderately high heat, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides, 8 minutes. Add the chopped onion and garlic and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened, 5 minutes. Add the flour and stir to coat the meat with it. Add the wine, bay leaves and thyme, season with salt and pepper and bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve any brown bits stuck to the bottom of the pot.. Cover the casserole and transfer it to the oven. Cook the stew for 1 1/2 hours, until the meat is very tender and the sauce is flavorful. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, cover the pancetta with 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Drain the pancetta and slice it 1/2 inch thick, then cut the slices into 1-inch-wide lardons. In a large pan, combine the pancetta, pearl onions, mushrooms and carrots. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1/4 cup of water and a large pinch each of sugar, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer until almost all of the water has evaporated, 15 minutes. Uncover and cook over high heat, tossing, until the vegetables are tender and nicely browned, about 4 minutes. To serve, stir some of the vegetables and lardons into the stew and scatter the rest on top as a garnish. Top with a little chopped parsley and serve.

1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 pounds trimmed beef flatiron steak or chuck, cut into 8 pieces Salt ,Freshly ground black pepper 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour One 750-milliliter bottle dry red wine 2 bay leaves , 1 thyme sprig One 5-ounce piece of pancetta 15 pearl onions, peeled 15 mushrooms 5 baby carrots, peeled Sugar Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

2 tbsp vegetable oil1 lb/500g mutton or lamb cutlets (bone removed) cut into 2”/5cm chunks2lb/ 1 kg potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters1 cup/115g onion, roughly chopped1 cup/ 100g leeks, cleaned and finely sliced1 cup/170g carrots, roughly chopped1½ pints / 750 ml dark beef stock2 or 3 cabbage leaves, thinly sliced (optional)Salt and Pepper

Heat the oven to 180°CIn a large frying pan heat half the oil to hot but not smoking. Add half the lamb pieces and brown all over. Remove the lamb and place in a casserole, cover with a half of the potatoes, onions, leeks and carrots.Add the remaining oil to the frying pan, heat again then add the remaining lamb and brown all over. Add to the casserole and cover with the remaining vegetables.Add the stock, cover with a tight fitting lid, cook in the oven for 1 hour. Add the cabbage (if using) replace the lid and cook for another hour. Check from time to time to make sure the stock isn’t reducing too much, if it is add a little boiling water. The meat and vegetables should always be covered by liquid. If the sauce is too runny at the end, cook a little longer with the lid removed. Season with salt and pepper. Serve piping hot.

REGULAR COLUMNS

YOU MUST BE SINGLE!A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: a half-gallon of 2% milk, a carton of eggs, a quart of orange juice, a head of romaine lettuce, a 2 lb. can of coffee, and a 1 lb. package of bacon. As she was unloading her items onto the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her was watching. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, “You must be single.” The woman was a bit startled by this proclamation, but she was intrigued by the derelict’s intuition, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped of the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said, “Well, you know what, you’re absolutely correct. But how on Earth did you know that?” The drunk replied, “’Cuz you’re ugly.”

A SMART GOODLOOKING BLONDE woman walks into a Manhattan bank and says she’d like to take out a $5,000 loan since she will be vacationing to Europe. When the banker asks what she will be using as collateral, she points to her brand new Bentley. The banker is surprised, but agrees. She leaves, and he laughs; who uses such an expensive car as collateral for such a small loan? But he shrugs it off and parks the car in the banks garage. Three weeks later, the woman returns to the bank. He retrieves her car and she pays back the $5,000 plus $14.00 in interest. As she goes to leave, the man decides he has to ask. “Ma’am,” he says, “why in the world would you use a $100,000 as collateral for a $5,000 loan?” She smiles and replies “where else can I park for three weeks in Manhattan for $14?”

FORGIVE ME FATHER FOR I HAVE SINNED... “go on” says the priest. “I swore the other day” says the man. “continue” says the priest. “I was on the golf course the other day and i hit my drive, it was looking perfect, head-ing dead straight. About 200 yards down my ball hit a power line crossing the fairway”. “and this is when you swore?” asked the priest. “No father, my ball then ricocheted of the power lines and flew off into the deep rough” continued the man. “this must have been when you swore?” the priest exclaimed. “No father, not yet.As i was walking over to the rough to hit my sec-ond shot a hawk flew down from the trees, picked my ball up in his beak and proceeded to fly off with it” continued the man. “Ahhh I see” says the priest “this must have been the point where you swore” “Nope not yet, as the bird flew over the green the ball fell from its mouth and landed two feet from the hole” The priest pauses for a few seconds “you missed the bloody putt didn’t you?”

A GERMAN, AN AUSTRIAN AND A CZECH are walking down the street, suddenly the German stops.“Vait up you guys. I need to slip into ze bank for und moment.” says the German. The trio walk towards the bank and the German and the Austrian walk inside. They turn around. The Czech is stood in the doorway.“Vhat are you vaiting for?” asks the Austrian.“It says no checks.” replies the Czech.

WHAT’S HAPPENED TO THE STIG?The Stig is already well-known for his ability behind the wheel of a Reasonably-Priced car but now the star of Top Gear appears to have achieved a different kind of immortality. A 30ft high sculpture of The Stig has been created to mark the launch of new global channel BBC Brit. The fibreglass model took three sculptors over two months to construct, with the head and torso alone measuring higher than a double decker bus.The statue was loaded onto a truck at Top Gear HQ at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey and will now journey across Europe for three days before arriving at its final destination: Warsaw’s Palace of Science and Culture.BBC Worldwide’s Amanda Hill said: “BBC Brit will be the new home of Top Gear in Poland, so what better way to mark this than by taking them a giant Stig. Fans will be able to spot him on the roads of England, Holland and Germany, he’s impossible to miss.”BBC Brit, which launches on February 1, is described by the BBC as “premium factual entertainment that is intelligent but irreverent. Male-skewing but with broader appeal, it blends expertise with entertainment and fact with fun. The channel will become the exclusive home of Top Gear and covers a rich variety of subjects: cars; science; adventure; business; life-changing moments; extreme characters; quirky eccentrics and plenty of laughs.”

SSANGYONG NAMES NEW SMALL CAR TIVOLISsangYong has high hopes for its new compact SUV the Tivoli, which arrives in the UK next summer. Has South Korean car maker SsangYong finally got a car with which to serious contest in the burgeoning compact SUV market in the UK? The new Tivoli seen here arrives in the UK next summer. It was code named X100 and the Tivoli name comes from the famous Roman gardens. There’s some debate about the pronunciation, but we’re sticking with ‘Tiv Oh Lee’. Since it is aimed straight at a market headed by Nissan’s Juke, for once SsangYong isn’t the weirdest looking car in the segment. As can be seen in these very designery sketches, it’s not a bad looking thing with five doors, an aggressive urban warrior nose and a cantilevered roof line pioneered of course by Land Rover with its Range Rover Evoque. Expect prices to start at around £12,500, which will make Tivoli highly competitive in the sector. “At last we’ve got a vehicle which stands up against the class in appearance,” says Steve Gray, SsangYong UK’s sales and marketing manager. “We’re hoping to double our sales next year in the UK with the Tivoli.”Actually Gray and his team haven’t been doing a bad job so far, with doubled sales of the existing products: Korando, a compact SUV; Rexton W, a full-sized SUV; Turismo, a 7-seat MPV; and Korando Sport, a commercial crew-cab pickup. Gray says that Korando sales, previously heavily supply limited, have started to take off and the Korando Sport one-tonne pickup has been doing well with small businesses. Backed by low prices (or a “redefined value proposition”) and a five-year unlimited warranty, SsangYong has heavily revamped its dealer network in the last year and now has “65 fully committed dealers in the UK,” says Gray.Tivoli goes on sale in January in South Korea and we’ll see the full European specification soon afterwards. Crowder said. Minicab driver Kugannesan Balasubramaniam, 34, was jailed for just nine months after he was convicted of causing death by careless driving.

RENAULT’S QASHQAI RIVAL TO BE NAMED KADJARRenaults rival to the Nissan Qashqai and Skoda Yeti SUVs will be called the Kadjar. No images of the car have been released yet, but Renault has revealed the name ahead of the new model’s official unveiling, which will take place on February 2. The ‘Kad’ part is said to be inspired by the word ‘quad’, which suggests four-wheel-drive versions will be offered, while ‘jar’ is taken from the French word ‘jaillir’, which means to suddenly emerge from somewhere. The Kadjar will go on sale in the UK later this year and will be a bigger, more spacious car than the Clio-based Captur SUV that Renault already offers. It’s likely to borrow design cues from the Captur and the 2014 Kwid concept, while prices will start at about £15,000.As is customary these days, Renault plans to drip feed teaser images and videos of the car in the days leading up to the unveil.

NEW CLASSIC CAR TV SHOWA new television series about the classic car world will make its debut on Channel 5 on February 5, fronted by Quentin Willson and Jodie Kidd. According to the initial blurb, The Classic Car Show “provides unprecedented access to the iconic cars, personalities and glamorous events that underpin the classic car world”. It’s not all gloss and glamour, however, as the producers say that everyday classics will also feature heavily in the 13 one-hour episodes. The show is well timed to coincide with a burgeoning classic car market, particularly at the top end. Over the last 10 years it has become a multi-billion dollar industry with values growing ahead of equities, fine art, wine, gold and London real estate. Top-end Ferraris increased in value by 55 per cent in 2013, for instance. Presented from a studio at the Brooklands racing circuit in Weybridge, Surrey (the world’s first purpose-built racetrack), The Classic Car Show is said to be produced not just for those who can tell a Ferrari 250 GTO from a 275 GTB, but for the whole family. Top Gear has set the standard for quality imagery, so it’s no surprise that the new show is produced by Jim Wiseman and Stephanie Fox, who have backgrounds in Top Gear and Top Gear Live. They say that a healthy budget means that the cars and personalities featured receive the high-definition treatment they deserve. As well as Jodie Kidd, a model who has proved herself an accomplished racing driver, and Quentin Willson, a former presenter of Top Gear, the show will feature contributions from the likes of David Gandy, Bruno Senna, David Coulthard, Derek Bell and Sir Stirling Moss.Highlights are said to include Kidd in a Jaguar XK120 at the Mille Miglia, Willson driving Keith Richards’ Ferrari 246 GT Dino on the French Riviera, Bell in a Porsche 962 at Le Mans, a 1964 Brabham BT11 at the Monaco Historique race meeting, and Senna putting 10 classics through their paces on a racetrack.Quentin Willson said: “No one has filmed a classic car series like this before. We’ve got gorgeous cars, A-list celebs, passionate stories, an extraordinary filming budget and endless enthusiasm. The Classic Car Show is an amazing insightful series without a socket set in sight.” Jodie Kidd added: “Classic cars are beautiful, sexy and evocative. When you climb in and turn the engine something magical happens. The Classic Car Show is a backstage pass to one of the most exciting and exhilarating forms of art that we have.”Sir Stirling Moss added: “What they are doing with this show is impressive, it is going to introduce the world of classic cars to a whole new global audience.”

BENTLEY SUV NAMED BENTAYGABentayga? it’s apparently a bloomin’ great rock in the middle of the Canaries, which is strangely appropriate as it’s also the name of Bentley’s forthcoming bloomin’ great SUV. I saw a teaser video of the engineering team driving the Bentayga up Big Red dune in Dubai with what sounded like a V8 yelling its head off.And at the same time as announcing the name, Bentley also released a teaser image of one of the Bentayga’s wing vents, which has been formed into a shape reminiscent of the Bentley ‘Flying B’ mascot. “I promise this will be the fastest, the most luxurious and the most exclusive SUV in the world,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley chief executive. Notice he didn’t say the best looking. It will break cover later this year (the smart money’s on Frankfurt) and will go on sale in 2016.

STAR MAN:If anyone is thinking of giving up in either sport or life then stop for a minute and consider the last few months in the career of Kieran Donaghy. Think back to a certain game in the Championship where he wasn’t brought on and everyone was saying this was the end. However he got another chance and the rest is in the GAA history books – he contributed to a number of the most vital scores in Kerry’s win, his starred with the Stacks in their winning of a much coveted County Championship and now are only one step away from the Club final, he was named this week in the Top 25 Irish basketball players of all time and for the coming season he will captain Kerry. Not bad for a guy who many had written off.Looking at that list of Ireland’s basketball players Donaghy is in at number 24 in the list compiled by renowned journalist Kieran Shannon. Indeed there was much debate that he should be much higher on the list. Shannon says his basketball career was too fleeting. He brings back memories of the National League final against Killester in 2008 in Limerick when Donaghy and Michael Quirke carried Tralee to victory after both Americans had fouled out. Donaghy scored 22 points that day having hit 24 points in the semi-final the day before. It was the last time Star would play Superleague.Proving the strength and legacy of Kerry basketball John Teahan is at number 22 on the list – who according to legendary coach Rus Bradburd was one of the most ferocious competitors he ever coached. Tralee’s other star of the hoops Micheal Quirke is at 18. He won two leagues and two cups in his 10 years on and off playing the game. Killarney’s Paudie O’Connor is the highest of the Kerry players at number 5. And who is number one on the list? Well it’s no surprise to anyone who followed basketball in its heyday in the 80’s and 90’s that Ballina’s Liam McHale takes the accolade.Back to the football and Donaghy was nominated by Austin Stacks at last Monday’s County Committee Meeting and his appointment was confirmed. The other captains appointed on the night were John Griffin from Lixnaw as County Senior Hurling Manager and Mark O’Connor from Dingle will captain the Minors. David Silles of Lixnaw will captain the Kerry hurlers in the Todd Nolan and Leinster League while his club colleague John Buckley will lead the team in the All Ireland Minor B Championship. The draws for the various Club Championships were made and in the Senior Club Stacks have a bye in the first round and will be away to Ardfert / Laune Rangers in Round 2. If it comes off a clash of Ardfert and Stacks should be a cracker. Kerins O’Rahillys take on Legion in Round 1. In the Intermediate John Mitchel’s are at home to Finuge in Round 1while in the Junior Championship St Pats go to Templenoe. The area of fixtures and the sandwiching of them into a short few months will again be getting lots of coverage. The GAA’s Director General is again pushing for a calendar season with the final of the Senior Club Championship to take place in

December. Those with a greater insight into the GAA’s fixtures than me say that from March 22nd to June 22nd 60% of the players from lesser and district clubs could play up to 12 games in the 16 weeks. And if Kerry are successful again most players will see very little action in July and August. Clubs were also warned that County Championship games will go ahead on the dates scheduled. Surely there is a better way and it does look like the calendar year is the way to go.

ONLY ONE NIGHT AT THE TRACK:There will only be racing on Friday night this week. There is no racing on Saturday night due to the National Coursing meeting in Clonmel. Qualifying trials that normally take place on Monday morning will take place on Tuesday afternoon next week. There will again be trials on Friday evening from 5 to 6pm for the runners in the GMHD Insurances Juvenile Classic. The big event with a winner’s prize of e15000 begins on Friday February 6th. Owners and trainers are asked to enter their runners at the Racing Office on 061 448057.

KERRY OSCAR TRAYNOR SIDE THROUGH – ONLY JUST!The Kerry District League side were missing a few regulars but on the other hand their opposition the Desmond League were already of the competition having lost twice and only had pride to play for. After 60 minutes it was all going to plan for Kerry as they were 3-0 up in a game that a win would see Kerry progress. But then the Desmond League scored twice to make it 3-2. Kerry did have the ball in the net but it was ruled out (for reasons that I won’t embarrass the referee by going into!!). However they did make it 4-2 and should have seen out the game but their opponents got another back to make it a nervous last few minutes. Thankfully Kerry did see it out and not face the AUL from Dublin in the Last 12 clash at Mounthawk in February. Now we all know the stories of 5 in a row sides being stopped – Kerry and Kilkenny to name but two. Well the AUL will come to Kerry as 4 in a row Oscar Traynor Champions so let’s hope the 5 in a row hoodoo continues!!

UNDER THE HOOPS:ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL NEWS:The u12’s just lost out to Team Kerry Cougars in the County League going down 24-22. Cougars led early but the boys bounced back and were only 1 behind at the break. The teams went basket for basket in the final 2 quarters. St Brendan’s went ahead late on but 2 free throws tied it up on the buzzer. Cougars got the all-important basket to win the game in overtime. Mike McCarthy and Garry Lynch top scored on 7 points. The team also lost out by 7 to St Bridgets in the County League in a game that was tight up to the final stages. St Brendan’s were only 2 points behind at the end of the third quarter but the home side were stronger in the final period and the Currow side won by 7. Garry Lynch on 9,

Graham Sheehy 7 and Sean Dillane on 6 were the top scorers for St Brendan’s.In the u14 County League St Brendan’s got the better of St Bridget’s 38-30 after a good start. They led by 1 at the break and despite a frantic last quarter held on to win. They made it a double defeating St Mary’s by a single point 40-39 away in Castleisland. Every point was vital here with the same minimum between the sides at the break 16-15. The win leaves the side top of the League with one game to play.Inter Firm: The club has a busy time coming up with the Inter Firm starting things off on the weekend of February 6th and 7th with games played on a 12 minute running clock. Group A has The Castle Bar, Tralee Stabbers, Boherbee Flourishers, Young at Heart and Tralee General Hospital. In Group B it’s We Are Family, Turners Bar, Re-Charge Office and Ink and Tralee Celtics. The entries to date in the annual James Hobbert Tournament for u17 boys, which takes place on Saturday March 7th are St Brendan’s, Tralee Imperials, Gneeveguilla, St Vincent’s and Ballincollig. There are 10 entries in the Jimmy Curran Memorial Tournament for u17’s Boys which takes place on the weekend of March 22nd.

TRALEE IMPERIALS STORIES: In the u16 Boys County League the Boys started off strongly against St Brendan’s and led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter. St Brendan’s rallied in the second and cut the gap to leave it 20-14 at the break. The 3rd quarter was neck and neck but Imperials stayed strong and ran out 47-31 winners. Dara Devine on 25 and Rory O’Connor on 8 were the top scorers. In the 12 Division 3 Girls Imperials C defeated Kenmare Kestrals and their next game will be against KCYMS in Killorglin on February 7th at 4pm. The 14 Boys had two games last week. They travelled to Killarney to play Cougars and led 19-10 at the break and won 29-16. Daire Barry Walsh and Daire Kennelly were the top scorers. Their second game was home to Glenbeigh Falcons in the semi-final of the Plate. This was a repeat of last year’s Plate Final when Flacons were worthy winners. However on this occasion Imperials were a stronger more determined side and led 14-8 at the break. Imperials were not to be denied and increased the lead to 20 at the final whistle 39-19. The final will be on the weekend of February 8th in Killarney. Imperials play their next game at home to Rathmore on February 2nd.Senior Ladies: Garvey’s Tralee Imperials are back in League action after the break. They travel to Dublin to face Oblate Dynamos on Sunday with a 1.30pm tip-off. Dynamos lost out to Portlaoise Panthers in the Cup at the weekend so will be looking to bounce back. Panthers lead the way on 15 points followed by Imperials on 12 and Dynamos next on 10.

Cup medals from Tallaght:While it is nothing like the glory days of Kerry basketball when conveys of coaches travelled for Kerry to support our teams in the Cup finals. Teams like Tralee Tigers, Abracabbra and Killarney’s St Paul’s in the Men’s and Imperials, St Paul’s and Castleisland in the Ladies all had great success in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. But this year while we had no team in the Cup we had some great individual successes. From a Tralee point of view Darragh O’Hanlon was on the winning UCC Demon’s team while Gary Fernane and Ryan Leonard won medals in the u18 boy’s competition. No Luck for the Mercy Mounthawk Girls:There was no luck for the Mercy Mounthawk Girls team who went down in the u16 Girls B All Ireland Cup Final. The game created a big buzz in the school as not alone were there a number of busses of fans who travelled but also it was streamed live in the Science Lab. Rebecca Ryan 7, Caitlin Crowe 5 and Rachel McInery on 4 were the Tralee girls top scorers.

SWIMMING AND SWIMATHON:14 swimmers were ready to race last Sunday but strong winds and drizzle meant big waves and put paid to people’s plans. Most did get into the water for a short swim.Going forward there will be an Easter Hamper up for grabs in the draw for all swimmers and the points system is in place where the Winter Swimmer of the Year will be chosen. Swimathon: The club is part of an Inter Club Fundraiser Swimathon which is also being supported by the Kingdom Swimming Club, The Kingdom Masters Swimming Club and the Tralee Triathlon Club. The event will take place in the Tralee Sports & Leisuire Complex on Saturday February 7th at 6pm. Entry fee is by voluntary contribution so please come along and be generous. There will be refreshments on the night so everyone is invited along.AGM: The AGM will take place on Wednesday February 4th in the Meadowlands Hotel, Tralee. There has been a number of nominations already filed but anyone still interested has time to put their name forward. Opinions are also being sought on any changes, improvements.

CLUB NIGHT A BIG SUCCESS FOR KINGDOM CYCLING CLUB:

The club was delighted with the big crowd that turned up for the Cycling Club’s open night and quiz. The objective was to promote the club and

to make parents and children aware of the club’s activities and plans and that certainly worked. Thanks also to Maria and all at Spin 11 who attended informing patrons of the gear available and more importantly sizing correctly.Club Founder Dick McElligott gave a great talk on the need for a youth’s cycling club and what they have gotten up to during the past 12 months. Club chairman Howard Jones presented certificates to some of those who have been part of the club the longest. Dick was a busy man on the night as he was quizmaster for what proved to be an very entertaining test of brain power. The club welcomed some new members to the 10am Sunday morning swim and they settled straight in for the trip around Tralee and Ballymac. Kieran Coggins, David Fitzgerald and Adam Lenihan all attended the Munster Academy in Kanturk and are amongst the best in their respective ages – showing that the Saturday morning race training sessions have certainly paid off.

PARNELL’S NEWS:Parnells Shop: The Tralee Parnells website which is currently in development will have a Club Shop page. This page will give details of where jerseys and other club gear are available. Child Protection Course: A Child Protection course (known as the Code of Ethics) will be facilitated by the GAA County Children’s Officer Bernie Reen on Thursday 12th Feb from 7pm to 10pm in Na Gaeil clubhouse. Forum: The Tralee Parnells are inviting all hurling and camogie clubs in Kerry to attend and provide a speaker for the upcoming forum on juvenile hurling and camogie in Kerry. Each speaker will be allocated 5 minutes to present what their club sees as the issues and the way forward. The forum will be held in Kerins O’Rahillys on Friday 27th of February starting at 8pm.

ST PAT’S NEWS:There was no winner from the numbers drawn – 4,5,15 and 26. The next Jackpot will be e7400 and the draw will take place as usual at the weekend.Well done to Seamus who has been chosen by Croke Park to travel to Abu Dhabi this week to referee at the Ladies World Football Championships. This is a great honour for all concerned.

O’RAHILLY’S STORIES:The countdown is on to the 10l which takes place this weekend. Registration closes this Friday night with the 10k on Sunday morning. Every finisher will receive a specially commissioned medal so best of luck to all who are taking part. Referees Foundation Course: The Kerry GAA are running the course starting on February 9th.Juvenile Training: Training continues indoors at the regular times each week.Hard luck on the Seniors who went down 1-09 to 1-14 in the Tralee District Championship Finals. It was great to see Tommy Walsh back in action and he certainly proved that he hadn’t lost any of his skill of desire. The Minors are back in action this weekend in the Tralee District Championship when they face Na Gaeil in Division 1 while the Division 2 side have a Bye. Being able to field two teams at Minor level is a huge vote of confidence in the club.Lotto: There was no

jackpot winner from the numbers drawn 4,17,25 and 27 and the next jackpot is e8,700.

NA GAEIL NEWS:A quick reminder that the Celebration Dance is on in the Meadowlands on Saturday, February 7th and tickets are still on sale.

The u14’s enjoyed their friendly game against An Ghaeltacht in their first game of the year. It finished 3-07 apiece.

Lotto: There was no winner of the e8,600 jackpot from the numbers drawn 5,11,15 and 23.

PITCHING AND PUTTING AGAIN:The recent County Board AGM in Pitch & Putt at the Killarney Avenue Hotel saw Deerpark’s Damien Fleming replace club-mate Gerry O’Sullivan as Chairman. Other news officers elected Castleisland’s Julianne Broderick and Deerpark’s John McGrath as joint Competition Secretaries with Tralee’s Tim Scannell assuming the position of PRO. David Hobbert (Secretary), John Fitzgerald (Registrar) and Sean O’Brien (Treasurer) remain in their respective positions with the positions of Vice-Chairman and Juvenile Officer to be co-opted at the first meeting of the Board.

This Friday night sees the Rentokil Initial Kerry Sports Star Awards with Pitch & Putt one of the categories again for the event. The three nominees for the award are the Munster Mixed Foursomes Winners Tony Blake and Lisa O’Connor from Tralee, the Kerry Intermediate Gents team, winners of the inaugural Munster Inter-County Graded Championship and Damien Fleming, National Match-play runner-up. We wish all three nominees the best of luck and an enjoyable evening in the Malton Hotel, Killarney.

RALLYING TO THE TABLE:Rally drivers, navigators, crews and family members will gather this Saturday night in the Ballygarry House Hotel for the Top Park West Coast Rally Championship Awards and presentation dinner.

All the winners from the past season will be presented with their awards on the night.
