Hi James,I have a good business that is performing well again in the last 18 months. However in the boom years I over extended the company by the company purchasing and renovating the business premises (previously rented). I am unable to catch up on my debts but do feel given time I could trade out of these difficulties. The bank has ruled out restructuring my loans. Any suggestions ?

James says:You are not an untypical case. A possible solution might be a debt for equity swap.

In recent years, in particular, we hear a lot about debt for equity swaps. Debt for equity deals occur when large companies run into serious financial trouble, and often result in these companies being taken over by their principal creditors.

A debt for equity swap is a capital reorganisation of a company where a bank or other creditor converts indebtedness owed to it by the company into one or more classes of the debtor company’s share capital. This is typically driven by the bank or other creditors of the company.

Such a reorganisation may occur where the debtor company is in a distressed state but its creditors do not believe that the situation warrants the appointment of a receiver or liquidator. Any such appointment would mean that the creditors are likely to receive a lesser return than if they substitute some of their debt for equity. The hope is that with a lower debt repayment profile they will receive an acceptable return on their equity once the company returns to profitability or is sold.

A debt for equity swap has no set structure. The swap may simply comprise a direct exchange of debt for shares in the company. In more complex cases, a new company funded by debt and equity provided by the bank and other creditors and investors may be formed to acquire the existing business from a liquidator or examiner appointed to the financially distressed debtor company.

The posts will be in a range of skilled media disciplines as the channel expands its range of locally-produced programming from the SIX Munster counties through its new regional office. The jobs were announced by Minister for

Diaspora Affairs Iimmy Deeflihan Who opened the offices at the Kerry Technology Park. Backed by UK entrepreneur, and recently-crowned Kerry London Person of the Year, ]0hn Griffin, Irish TV has witnessed exceptional growth since it was launched last May and delivers 40 new Irish-produced programmes every week including 32 weekly County Matters shows. Households in Ireland have access to Irish TV on Sky TV 191, Freesat 400, eircom eVision 191 and online at irishtv.com. Irish TV expects to be available on the Saorview platform in March, and is currently in negotiations with a range of overseas networks. Kerry broadcaster Brian Hurley has been appointed as Munster Regional Manager for Irish TV and he will be responsible for all programming from the region.“Our ethos is to showcase local stories, businesses, tourism and communities to a local and global audience, and we believe in being on the ground in each county which are managed through regional offices,” said Mr Hurley. “Kerry’s standing as a centre of international tourism

as well as access to skilled multimedia graduates from IT Tralee and Kerry ETB were key factors in our decision to locate in Tralee, and we will be producing a range of programmes from our regional office, in addition to our County Matters shows fmm t e Six Munster counties.

“Tralee joins our other regional office locations in Mayo and Tyrone. As we are the only Irish TV channel to broadcast in the UK, we have regional headquarter?- in London and Manchester, with new offices scheduled to open this month in Birmingham and in the US.“Irish TV will open up a massive international market that will have huge benefits for Kerry and right across the Munster region.“Kerry has its own weekly half hour show Kerry County Matters on Irish TV, which is broadcast every Wednesday at 7.30pm and would ask individuals or groups who have a good story for TV to contact me on [email protected]. “A RED C Poll carried out for the station showed that 20% of the Irish populati0r1 have watched Irish TV and 51% are aware of us, which is an extremely successful result in such a short time. “Premiering on Irish TV this spring is ]immy’s Heroes, a weekly chat show hosted by broadcasting legend ]immy Magee who talks to some of his Irish sporting heroes. “Also coming to your screens is new agricultural programme Grassroots, and the new season of the popular Cooking with Treyvaud, with l(illarney’s unconventional TV chef Paul Treyvaud. “Country music will also feature heavily this spring, with a new season of On the Road with Lisa Mcl-{ugh and a special tribute show with Big Tom and a new series looking at the golden age of showbands in lreland.”

Simone works in a workplace where men are generally paid more than the women in the workplace. She had argued with management before that this was unfair but was told that the men were doing different jobs with different duties, responsibilities and types of work. What can she do?

There is a general right of equality in the Irish Constitution. However equality in the workplace is enshrined in the European Union Treaties and as part of making the EU one big equal workplace the equality legislation was introduced in Ireland and across Europe. IT allows workers to seek redress where they feel they have been treated unfairly in relation to recruitment, pay, promotion, conditions training or experience, dismissal and harassment including sexual harassment. All complaints in relation to equality in the workplace start now in the www.workplacerelations.ie website and after sending an initial complaint letter it is then up to Simone to take a formal complaint by filling in and sending in a form that is available on that website. The application can be made online and must be made within 6 months. Remember in Ireland one cannot be discriminated against on 9 grounds, Gender, Race, Sexual Orientation, Disability, Civil or Marital status or family status, membership of the travelling community. Religion or Age.Simone’s case relates to disparities in pay related to gender so she could take her claim under that heading and it is up to the body hearing the case to decide whether there was genuine discrimation or could it be justified on objective grounds.Equality quip: T Shirt slogan “ Men are from earth. The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) is delighted to announce that the seventh IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year Awards will take place on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 at IMRO HQ in Dublin.AWARDS 2014 The shortlist was announced this week via the IMRO building by Victor Finn (IMRO Chief Executive).Siamsa Tire , Tralee has made the Munster shortlist and is up against some great venues such as Coughlan’s & De Barra’s,in Cork,Dolans,of Limerick and University Concert Hall, Limerick The annual awards celebrate the dedication and passion of those who work in Ireland’s live music venues, providing the public with an exceptional live music experience, week in, week out. More than 10,000 IMRO members considered hundreds of venues across the country for the shortlist. Venues were judged on their commitment to providing the core elements that make for a great live music venue – atmosphere, sound and lighting, staging, diversity of programming and importantly, the staff and management of each venue. IMRO members also voted on Ireland’s music festivals, delivering a shortlist of their top ten festivals. Live music venues and festivals play a vital role in the music industry in Ireland, giving international and homegrown artists a platform to engage with fans and build new audiences. They also play a central role in urban and rural communities across the country, providing a social gathering space for varied audiences, and contributing hugely to the domestic economy. Of the Awards, Victor Finn, IMRO Chief Executive said, “Over the years these Awards have become a much sought after industry accolade. They also highlight the vital economic and social contribution that venues and festivals make

to local economies and the enormous role they play in providing a public platform for Irish & international songwriters and performers”. At the ceremony in IMRO HQ in Dublin on February 3rd, awards will be presented to the leading live music venue in each of the following regions: Dublin, Leinster (excluding Dublin), Connacht, Munster and Ulster (Donegal, Monaghan, Cavan). The IMRO Live Music Festival of the Year will also be presented on the night. One overall award will be presented to the IMRO National Live Music Venue of the Year. This award is decided upon by the public, who vote for their live music venue of the year from the combined shortlist of all the regions. Live music fans should simply log on to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/imrovenueawards choose their favourite from the shortlist provided, by February 2nd. One lucky voter will win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. The Hot Press Live Music Venue of the Year Readers Poll will also be part of the awards and Hot Press fans can vote at http://www.hotpress.com/readerspoll/vote.php?id=13208103&action=view “Ireland has a wonderfully vibrant music scene right now,” Niall Stokes, editor of Hot Press said, “with a fresh wave of talent coming through and making impressive waves internationally. But with sales of albums having fallen dramatically, live music is more important than ever, as the lifeblood of the industry. Which makes it crucial that we have great venues all over Ireland in which our songwriters, artists and bands can find their voices, build their experience and win support.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PREPARING FOR RETIREMENTQuestionI will be retiring from work in 2015 when I reach 65. What do I need to know about pensions and other benefits in retirement?

AnswerWhen you retire at age 65 you can claim Jobseeker’s Benefit, which is based on your Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) contributions. If you do not qualify for Jobseeker’s Benefit you can claim Jobseeker’s Allowance, which is a means-tested payment. At age 66, you may be entitled to the State Pension (Contributory). If you do not have enough PRSI contributions, you can apply for a State Pension (Non-Contributory), which is means-tested. You should apply for State pensions at least three months in advance. You may have contributed to an occupational pension scheme during your working life or you may have a personal pension arrangement. You need to contact the pension provider to find out exactly what benefits your pension gives you. If you move from employment to retirement in the course of the year, you should get a PAYE Balancing Statement (P21) from your local tax office at the end of the year. This will trigger a refund of any overpayment of tax you might have made.

Your Jobseeker’s Benefit or State pension and any occupational pension are taxable. However, the tax exemption limits are much higher for people aged 65 or over and there are some extra tax credits.

At age 66 you will be exempt from paying PRSI. At age 70 you will pay a reduced Universal Social Charge if your annual income is €60,000 or less.

At age 66 you will also be eligible for a Free Travel Pass and may be eligible for the Household Benefits Package, which consists of a free TV licence and an electricity or gas allowance.

For medical cards and GP Visit Cards, which are means tested, the income limits are higher for people aged 70 and over.

Anna says:Edinburgh with daily, short ights ex Shannon/Cork, huge choice of accommodation to suit everyone and an interesting city –> Arthur’s seat, Tour of Edinburgh old Town, Edinburgh castle, The Royal Mile, Royal Botanic Gardens. Krakow in Poland is a vibrant city with Royal Castle, big square and excursions to see the Salt Mines or Auschwitz Camp. Great choice of restau-rants/cafes, brilliant shopping destination and lack of €uro makes it great value for money! Other cities we would recommend to discover are: Budapest, Berlin, Istanbul, Seville, Gdansk to name a few.

Q: I got a Sol Voucher for Christmas, but won’t be travelling anywhere this year. Will I lose it?

Dan, Abbeyfeale

Anna says:Our vouchers are valid for 12 months and can be used towards all services we provide. You can book your holiday this year to travel sometime in 2016. If you can’t commit yourself to a date for 2015 or 2016, please call to our oce with the ORIGINAL voucher, explain your situation to our sta member and we can extend the expiry date for you, so you won’t lose it. Bon Voyage,

Anna

Being a parent of a child with additional needs brings great joy, love and challenges. Unfortunately, many parents are struggling to find the answers to serious financial and legal implications for their son or daughter. An information meeting, addressing the challenges facing parents is being held in The Manor West Hotel, Tralee, on Saturday 24th January 11.00am – 12.30pm. The workshop is opened to all parents of special needs children. The “Special Needs Trust Planning Workshop” is being led by Allan Cuthbert, the founder of “Financial Wellbeing”, a company dedicated to integrating all the difficulties to find information on various special needs grants, tax, financial and legal implications into an easy to understand format. The theme of the morning is the need to establish a Special Needs Trust to ensure that a child doesn’t lose their entitlements and can maintain their quality of life after their parents have passed away. It will also detail rarely claimed entitlements and tax credits. Allan will present information on special needs Wills and how to choose the right Guardians and Trustees. He will also explain the need for a “Letter of Wishes”, Special needs bank account and much more. The key focus of the morning will be the importance of establishing a Trust for a special needs child and how to fund the Trust from entitlements. Allan has a niece with Down syndrome and it shocked him how hard it was for parents to access information that is vital for the wellbeing of their child. “I decided that I wanted to make a difference and so I set up Financial Wellbeing in 2008. I have dedicated myself to helping ensure a better quality of life for children with additional needs and their families.” Allan is a regular radio presenter on financial issues regarding disability. He writes for 38 different charities, parents association and organisations. In the last 6-months he has also given over 20 presentations on Special Needs Trust Planning to various charities around Ireland. This is a free event (normally €60), but spaces are limited and pre-booking is essential. Call Dolores on 021 482 3635 / 086 023 6995 or email [email protected] to secure your place. Check www.financialwellbeing.ie for more information.

Hello Everyone! I’ve had a busy week with lots of meetings with regards to fitness. I’m delighted to announce I’m starting a 12 week journey with Manor West Leisure Centre & Zero Gravity Fitness Studio!

Why 12 Weeks? In exactly 12 weeks I will be celebrating my 21st birthday! If that doesn’t motivate me nothing will! It’s a great incentive to have and I plan on definitely being at least 2 dress sizes smaller by then!

Manor West Leisure Centre & Zero Gravity Fitness Studio

I met with the lovely Catriona today who showed me all around the centre to really get a feel for the place, I saw the cardio area, classes area and the new Zero Gravity Fitness Studio where most of my work will be done. I told her all about my goal for 12 weeks and she agreed it’s a great incentive. I have a consultation with Catriona on Saturday where we will discuss my goals and take all my measurements. We will be taking my measurements weekly.I then was told that Chris & Wayne will be my trainers for Strength & Conditioning. They will work with me to develop a personalised plan to ensure I get the most out of my training. I’m meeting Wayne on Monday to go through everything so I’ll have more information next week! I will also be doing some of the classes available in Manor such as TRX, SPINNING, PILATES, FAB ABS and much more! After not being in the gym since my operation in November I am soooooo excited to get back into it! I

can’t wait to work with everyone in Manor West and to share my journey with you along the way!

The smell of a good stew around the house is one of the truly great aromas .The really good news regarding preparation and just plain handiness , is that a stew can be made ahead and reheated on the day .(Some say it tastes even better that way !)

INGREDIENTS1. 3 pounds well-marbled boneless pork shoulder, cut into 2 1/2-inch pieces 2. One 750-milliliter bottle white wine3. 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 4. 1 medium carrot 5. Bouquet garni: 6 sprigs each of parsley, thyme and winter savory plus 2 bay leaves and 1 leafy celery top, tied with twine 6. Spice bundle: 1/2 teaspoon lavender flowers, 12 crushed peppercorns and 10 crushed juniper berries, tied in cheesecloth 7. 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

Daube 1. 1 1/2 ounces dried porcini (1 cup) 2. Water 3. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4. Salt and freshly ground pepper 5. 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 6. 2 1/2 tablespoons brandy 7. 1 large onion, thinly sliced 8. 1 large carrot, cut into 1/2-inch dice 9. 4 ounces fresh pork skin with a thin layer of fat, cut into 2-by-1/2-inch strips 10. 1 head of garlic, separated into cloves but not peeled 11. 10 crushed juniper berries 12. Reserved bouquet garni

Garnish 1. 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2. 1 1/2 pounds oyster and chestnut mushrooms, halved if large 3. Salt and freshly ground pepper 4. 4 garlic cloves, minced 5. 1/3 cup finely chopped parsley 6. 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar

PREPARATION: 1. Put the pork in a large bowl. Add the wine, onion, carrot, bouquet garni, spice bundle and olive oil. Cover and refrigerate overnight. 2. The next day, pour the pork into a colander set over a bowl. Discard the onion and carrot. Squeeze the spice bundle over the meat, then discard the bundle. Reserve the pork, bouquet garni and the marinade. 3. In a bowl, soak the porcini in 1 cup of hot water until softened, about 20 minutes. In a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil. Season the pork with salt and pepper. Add half of the pork to the pan and cook over moderately high heat until well-browned all over; transfer to a plate. Repeat with the remaining pork. 4. Return all of the pork to the pan and sprinkle with the flour. Stir over moderate heat until the flour has dissolved, about 1 minute. Add the brandy and carefully ignite it with a long match; shake the pan until the flames die down. Return the pork to the plate. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the pan along with the onion and carrot. Season with salt and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are lightly browned, about 10 minutes. 5. Lift the porcini from the soaking liquid and coarsely chop them; reserve the soaking liquid. Add the porcini to the pan and cook for 3 minutes, stirring. 6. Preheat the oven to 120°. Line the bottom of a 4 1/2-quart enameled cast-iron casserole with the pork skin, fat side down. Spoon 1/3 of the pork over the skin followed by 1/3 of the vegetable mixture and 1/3 of the garlic cloves. Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with some of the juniper berries. Repeat this layering 2 more times. 7. Return the pan to moderately high heat. Pour in the reserved porcini soaking liquid, stopping before you reach the grit at the bottom. Add the reserved pork marinade and bring to a simmer, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Boil until reduced to 2 cups. Pour this liquid over the daube. 8. Tuck the reserved bouquet garni into the daube. Add enough water to the casserole to just cover the meat and bring to a boil over moderately high heat. Place a round of parchment paper directly on the surface of the meat and cover with the lid. Transfer the casserole to the oven and bake until the meat is tender, about 2 1/2 hours. Let cool to room temperature. Discard the parchment paper, bouquet garni and any bits of juniper berry. Refrigerate the daube overnight. 9. Preheat the oven to 140°. In a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil until shimmering. Add the oyster and chestnut mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Remove the lid. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated and the mushrooms start to brown, about 4 minutes. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Stir in the chopped parsley. 10. Scrape the fat from the surface of the daube and discard it. Mix the mushrooms into the daube and bring to a simmer over high heat, stirring frequently. Bake the daube for about 1 1/2 hours, uncovered, until the liquid has reduced slightly and the meat is very tender. Stir in the vinegar, season with salt and pepper and serve

PIZZATIME !While working at a pizza parlour I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. The cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. The man then said ‘Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don’t think I’m hungry enough to eat 6

A YOUNG GARDA A young Garda notices an old man driving through the town at 2 in the morning ....and it had been a pretty slow night and so he decided to pull in over to see if he needed any assistance.

“Where are you going sir?,” asked the young officer.

“I am on my way to attend a lecture concerning the negative effects of alcohol on interpersonal relationships,” said the man.“Who would hold such a lecture at this time of night?” asked the officer.“That would be my wife,” said the man.

A FIFTEEN YEAR OLD AMISH BOY AND HIS FATHER WERE IN A SHOPPING MALL......

They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again.

The boy asked, ‘What is this, Father?’ The father (never having seen an elevator) responded, ‘Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life, I don’t know what it is.’ While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady in a wheel chair moved up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number. and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.

Finally the walls opened up again and a gorgeous 24-year-old blond stepped out. The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son.....‘Go get your Mother.’

A SMALL JOKEA dwarf goes to a very good but very busy doctor and asks “I know you are busy but do you treat dwarves?”The doctor replies “Yes, but you will have to be a little patient”.

AIRLESS TYRE ENTERS PRODUCTIONMichelin’s new Tweel is a combined wheel/tyre assembly that never goes flatMichelin has opened a new facility in South Carolina, USA, to produce itsTweel airless tyre. Conceived by Michelin research engineers in the US, the Tweel is a non-pneumatic radial tyre that brings together the tyre and wheel assembly in one solid unit. It comprises a rigid hub connected to a shear beam by flexible, deformable polyurethane spokes, all functioning as a single unit. The Tweel is designed for commercial use, such as landscaping, construction and agriculture. It has been specified as original equipment on certain John Deere commercial mowers. The Tweel was originally introduced as a concept at the 2004 Paris motor show. Michelin claims it is the only commercial product offering the advantages of no maintenance, no compromise and no downtime. It performs with traditional radial tyre technology but requires no air. Michelin says that it also provides longer wear life than conventional pneumatic tyres.

PERSONALISED NUMBER PLATE SELLS FOR A RECORD £518,000Registration number ‘25 O’ becomes the most expensive ever sold in the UK

A personalised number plate sold at auction by the DVLA has broken the record for the most expensive registration ever sold in the UK. The registration, ‘25 O’, was sold at the auction in Cardiff for £518,000 well over its reserve of just £4,000. The record was previously held by ‘F 1’, which was sold to businessman Afzal Kahn for £440,625 in 2008. The new record holder was bought by John Collins, owner of classicFerrari specialist Talacrest; Mr Collins also purchased the registration ‘250 L’ at the same time, for £130,320, bringing his total spend to £648,320.“I was just determined to own them,” he said afterwards. “It was just a case of how much I was going to have to pay for the privilege.” Asked how much he would have paid for ‘25 O’, Mr Collins said: “I’m not too sure – it could possibly have been the first £1 million personalised registration!”As you might expect, both registrations will find their way onto classic Ferraris. ‘25 O’ will grace a Ferrari 250 SWB that was once owned by Eric Clapton, while ‘250 L’ will be transferred to a 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.

UK SPEEDING FINES HIT FOUR-YEAR HIGH DUE TO NEW DIGITAL CAMERASNew generation of speed cameras sees the number of fines reach record high The number of speeding fines issued to motorists by the UK courts has risen to its highest level for four years amid the rollout of a new generation of digital speed cameras.More than 115,000 motorists in England and Wales were issued with fines of at least £100 by magistrates last year - the highest level since the Coalition came into power in 2010, according to figures from the Ministry of Justice. In Essex, the number of speeding fines issued by the courts rose by 44 per cent last year, while in Avon and Somerset the number increased by 34 per cent. In six other police areas, the number of speeding fines handed out by magistrates rose by around a quarter.Motoring organisations said the rises were being fuelled by sophisticated digital speed cameras, which unlike ageing film versions can take pictures around the clock. The new cameras are being phased in across the country and have the advantage that they never run out of film and can take pictures indefinitely. However, the Association of British Drivers said there was little evidence that speed cameras actually reduced road accidents and suggested that speeding tickets were now simply being used as a “cash cow”.More than half of forces in England and Wales have replaced ageing film versions with new digital models. The Dept of Justice in Ireland is said to be monitoring the situation. While they cost up to £10,000 install but their running costs are significantly lower, as police officers are not needed to collect and develop the film.Instead the information from the camera is sent automatically to a control centre which, once the car has been identified from its number plate, can send out a notice of intended prosecution – the first stage towards fining motorists and putting points on their licence. Will we see the same happen in Ireland ?

1990S FERRARIS AND AN ALFA WITH ONLY 2,600 MILES FROM NEWHow about a trio of desirable Italian sports coupés from the Nineties – all in gleaming red, naturally – and with a collective mileage of just over 2,600 miles from new? The Ferrari Testarossa, Alfa Romeo SZ and Ferrari Mondial T, all built in 1991, were tucked away almost immediately after purchase as part of a large private collection owned by arguably one of Europe’s most fastidious enthusiasts. They are being sold by Silverstone Auctions during its sale at theRace Retro historic racing show at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on February 21 and 22.The highlight of the collection is possibly one of the finest Ferrari Testarossas available, having covered only 955 miles from new. It is described by the auction house as in immaculate condition – you’d hope so, wouldn’t you? – and is estimated at between £130,000 and £150,000. It even comes with the original luggage and Cartier watch supplied with each new Testarossa. Another Ferrari, a 1991 Mondial T, estimated at between £50,000 and £70,000, has covered only 1,180 miles in 24 years. Traditionally the Mondial has been one of the least desirable Ferraris, but with prices of other models from Maranello surging ever higher it is now tipped by many to be the next Ferrari to rise significantly in value. The third of the trio is one of the maddest cars of the Nineties, the Zagato-designed Alfa Romeo SZ. Only 998 SZs were produced in two years, with only 100 officially imported into the UK. This example has covered only 502 miles and is estimated at between £50,000 and £70,000 Guy Lees-Milne of Silverstone Auctions said: “This is a very special collection of Italian exotica and each of the cars is in almost brand new condition. It’s rare to find one or even two of these cars with such low mileage but to find three is something special indeed.

TOP GEAR: NEW SERIES TO RECEIVE GLOBAL LAUNCHFlagship BBC show Top Gear will launch its new series with a global simulcast in more than 50 countries around the world. The controversial, yet immensely popular TV motoring show will be broadcast in Australia, Africa and the Middle East at the same time as the programme is shown on BBC2 later this month. In what appears to be an attempt to circumvent illegal viewing, the show – previously one of the world’s most pirated programmes – will also screen in a number of other countries including Malaysia, Taiwan and Mongolia within 2 hours of its UK debut on January 25. Top Gear is one of the BBC’s most prized franchises, despite its regular controversies that its stars Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond get into, such as the Falklands-baiting row which erupted in Argentina during its Patagonia special, screened over Christmas. Clarkson commented: “Other globally popular television shows have cunning ways of launching their new seasons such as world tours and the like, but I thought of an easier way to let the planet know we’re back - the interweb. “Fond as I am of passport control queues and restricting my carry-on liquids to 100ml, I much preferred the idea of driving one mile from my home in London to celebrate this series with fans everywhere at the same time.”

AA ISSUES WARNING TO CLASSIC CAR OWNERS AFTER MG ‘FOLDED LIKE A PENKNIFE’Motoring organisations are warning classic car owners they could be driving death traps after a teacher was killed when his MG “folded like a penknife”. Nick Sennett, 58, had hired the MGB GT convertible for a pleasure run but was hit from behind by a short-sighted and overworked minicab driver. The sports car collapsed around him and Mr Sennett, who taught economics at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, was pronounced dead at the scene. Older vehicles do not have crumple zones and even recent classics like Minis and Ford Capris will come off a lot worse in a collision with the latest models. Ian Crowder from the AA said: “These cars simply do not have the damage resistance of modern vehicles.”Classic car owners and users really need to be aware of the risks when they take the road in a less resilient vehicle. “This was obviously a terribly tragic episode for which a driver has been convicted and jailed.” Mr Crowder said most other road users often drive more respectfully when they are near to classic cars. But the owners and users of older cars need to take extra care when they take to the road. “They need to drive in a manner which respects modern vehicles and they need to know the risks,” Mr Crowder said. Minicab driver Kugannesan Balasubramaniam, 34, was jailed for just nine months after he was convicted of causing death by careless driving.

FELS POINT PART OF HOTEL PORTFOLIO ON THE MARKET FOR MORE THAN €35M

Seven hotels with an estimated value of more than €35 million are to be offered for sale just as the provincial hotel market shows signs of recovery.Although six of them are being sold as distressed assets by the funding banks, all of them are profitable, according to John Hughes of selling agents CBRE. The seventh hotel, the Metropole in Cork, is also trading successfully. The highest value hotel going on the market is the Glenroyal Hotel & Leisure Centre in Maynooth, Co Kildare, which has a price tag of €10.5 million and was owned by Ray Grehan, the developer who will be forever remembered for pay-ing €171 million for the 2.04-acre former UCD Veterinary College in Ballsbridge in 2004.

CARRICKMINES RESIDENTIAL SITE FOR SALE AT OVER €18M

CBRE is confident of finding buyers for all seven hotels which will either be sold as one lot, or in blocks, or individually. Last year 63 hotels changed hands at an overall valuation of just over €341 million. There is also likely to be strong bidding for the Johnstown House Hotel & Spa, beside Enfield, Co Meath, which has a guide price of in excess of €6.5 million. Two of the hotels for sale have guide prices of more than €4 million – the Metropole on MacCurtain Street in Cork and Fels Point Hotel in Tralee, Co Kerry. The Tralee hotel has 145 bedrooms including 18 executive rooms. It also has function rooms, a bar and restaurant. The four-star hotel occupies a highly visible site close to the town centre and is synonymous with the annual Rose of Tralee Festival. Only one of the seven hotels going for sale – the three-star Maldron Hotel at Bamstown, Wexford – is to be sold as an investment. The agents are quoting a guide price of €3.5 million for the 108-bedroom hotel which is leased to the Dalata Hotel Group for 25 years from December, 2002, at a current rent of €300,000 per annum. The Killeshin Hotel on the outskirts of Portlaoise town has a guide price of €3 million. CBRE is suggesting a guide of €2 million for the South Court Hotel in Raheen, Limerick, which has some of the largest conference facilities in the region, capable of accommodating up to 1,200 people.

RECORD YEAR FOR INVESTMENT IN IRISH COMMERCIAL PROPERTY

Investment in Irish commercial property reached a record high in 2014, with some €4.5 billion invested. This represents a 25 per cent increase on the previ-ous peak of €3.6 billion reached in 2006.Investors rushed to avail of the capital gains tax (CGT) exemption in the last quarter, with some €1.6 billion invested in the three months to December, mak-ing Q4 the strongest quarter of the year.In total, there were 295 transactions in 2014, compared to 145 in 2013 and 121 in 2006, and there were 15 transactions greater than € 100m in 2014 compared to three in 2013.The largest transaction of the year was Project Sapphire which Cosgraves sold to Green REIT for €375m in Q2. It comprised two office blocks: George’s Quay and George’s Court, and retail: Westend Retail Park.Hannah Dwyer, head of research at JLL Dublin said that 2014 was “ a very active year for the property market”.“The turn-around for investments has been remarkable, with an uplift in the supply of assets coming onto the market, strong demand from investors, and increases in values and returns. Essentially we have seen a pent-up surge of workout activity with willing sellers and buyers in the market,” she said. However, while 2015 is likely to be “another strong year” for the Irish investment market, Ms Dwyer noted that activity levels will unlikely to match 2014.“We do not expect activity to be at the same record-levels we saw in 2014, but investment volumes are likely to achieve € 3bn. This is still significantly ahead of the 10-year average of € 1.4bn,” she said, noting that there remains a signifi-cant volume of assets still to be brought to the market from banks deleveraging.

Why not have a go at picking the winners and send me your predictions and we will see how close you are to the judges verdicts. Also are there those who you think the judges overlooked? Like most Awards there will be differing views but to use that old cliché – it’s being nominated that counts! However knowing sports people and their competitiveness they will all want to win. The answers will be revealed on the 30th.

BUSY NIGHTS AT THE TRACK:Racing takes place again this Friday and Saturday night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium with 11 race programmes each night. There will be no racing on Saturday, January 31st due to the National Coursing meeting in Clonmel. A reminder to owners and trainers with dogs running in the GMHD insurances Killarney juvenile classic, which begins on Fri Feb 6th, that official trials will be held on each Friday from 5 to 6pm up to Jan 30th.Congratulations to Declan and all at the track on being awarded a Certificate in recognition of their contribution to the Gathering 2013 for their Sunday Race Day with The Roses. The day at the track also featured in the Gathering Yearbook.

D DAY FOR KERRY:The Kerry District League side go into their final Oscar Traynor Group game this Sunday knowing a 2-0 win will put them into the next round. Kerry take on the Desmond League while Cork face Limerick. Kerry have drawn with the two bigger Leagues while the Desmond League has lost both their games meaning Limerick and Cork are on 4 points with Kerry on 2. So their destiny is in their own hands. The winners of the groups go straight into the Last 8 while if Kerry finish runners up in the Group they will play either the Dublin AUL or the Defence Forces.

DYNAMOS TOO HOT FOR DRINAGH RANGERS:Tralee Dynamos are through to Round 5 of the Munster Junior Cup following a hard fought 1-0 away win in Drinagh in the heart of West Cork last Sunday. On a bitterly cold day the squad travelled by car to the club just outside Dumanway. The game was played on a heavy pitch and both sides took time to settle. The first goal was always going to be vital and while both sides created half chances in the first half neither side really threatened the opposition keeper. To be fair to the Tralee side they were playing the better football, even against the swirling wind and Drinagh had expended a lot of energy just to stay in the game. The vital breakthrough came in the 48th minutes. Stephen Conway and Derek O’Brien combined for a short corner which allowed O’Brien to put in a great cross. The Drinagh keeper could only parry in traffic and Jonathan Burrows was quickest to react to loop a header into the net.Dynamos controlled the rest of the game without doubling their lead but 1 was enough to see them set up a Round 5 clash away to either Riverstown or Park United. Dynamos had some very good performances on the day with Jonathan Hannafin the man of the match. They certainly have all the tools to go a very long way in this competition.

PARK YOUTHS MARCH ON TO FAI CUP LAST 16:The St Brendan’s Park Youths are into the last 16 of the FAI Youths Cup after a come from behind 3-2 win away to Granagh United in Askeaton. The Park conceded after only 15 seconds but didn’t leave that setback phase them and they level within 13 minutes through Gareth Hickey Brosnan. The Park then took the lead in the 67th minute when Paddy Collins curled the ball into the top corner. But the Tralee side couldn’t build on this and the game was al level 4 minutes later. It stayed 2 all until injury time at the end of the first period of extra time. Following a mistake by the Grannagh keeper Ferdia O’Brien fired an unstoppable free kick into the net to put the Park ahead and they held on to move into the last 16 in the country.

UNDER THE HOOPS:TRALEE IMPERIALS FALL TO FAMILIAR OPPONENTS:Portlaoise Panthers 74-63 win over Garvey’s Imperials in the top of the table clash was the latest in a long line of great battles between the clubs in recent years. Panthers led by Kelsey Wolfe started the brightest and led 26-17 at the end of the first quarter. The Tralee girls defence was keeping Wolfe quiet but Meave O’Sullivan was taking on the mantle and it saw the visitors lead 34-27 at the break. But Imperials will be a little disappointed that they didn’t capitalise more on their opportunities. In the final two quarters Imperials did everything to get back into the game and closed the gap to 5 points at one stage. However Panthers got some vital scores to wrap up the game and stay top of the table. Garvey’s Imperials drop to third and will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they travel to Dublin to take on Oblate Dynamos

on February 1st. Loretta Maher top scored with 20 followed by Emma Sherwood on 19 and Lynne Jones on 9.The u14’s girls travelled to Currow minus the height of Ciara Ryan who was injured and Abbi Casey who was sick but the 11 who travelled put in a great effort and got their reward. The Tralee girls led 11-2 after the first quarter and pulled away further to lead 33-12 at half time. Currow to their credit took the third quarter but the gap was too big and in the end Imperials won 58-31. They followed this up with a win over Team Kerry Bobcats. They were behind by 7 early on but levelled it at 17 all at the break before going on to win 37-28. Two good wins by the squad of Rachel Ryan, Abi Casey, Muria Luckova, Ciara Nix, Rachel Killgallen, Rebecca Conway, Aoife Dillane,Mary O’Connell, Alison O’Leary,Alison Guerin and Ciara RyanThe u18 Girls went down to Castleisland 53-42. These sides have had great battles through the years and in this game Imperials came within 4 points of levelling things but a couple of turnovers and interceptions did not help!
