Recently we had a visit from the DoE Home School Liaison Officer for a regular Roll Check. This is a timely reminder that parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. However, over the coming months some of our students will unfortunately catch winter colds and viruses. On these days your child may need to be kept home from school until they are well enough to attend. When a child is away from school parents must provide an explanation for the absence within 7 days. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe the school will record the absence as unjustified as per DoE Guidelines. I would also like to remind all parents that if your child is late to school the adult is asked to bring them to the office for a late slip. Students who are late should not be going directly to their classroom. It is important that each day, students arrive at school on time as ‘Every Minute Counts’. Remember you can always submit your absent notice via the Schoolzine SZapp. We are adding features to our Schoolzine App. Please return to the registration page on your Schoolzine app and connect with all the groups now available. Your messages will be grade and activity specific. That way you will only get messages that are important to you. Reports will be sent home on Thursday. If you have taken early leave they will be sent home on Tuesday 24 July when students return next term. If you are on leave and would like the report posted please let the office know by 3pm Thursday. As always, if you have questions about your reports please email the school office to make an appointment for next term with your classroom teacher. Upcoming P & C Meeting: The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 31 July, Tuesday of Week Two. We will be starting to plan the fundraising events for the second half of the year and we need your help. Please put this date in your diary as we are looking to establish some small working parties to organise the following events: The P&C voted on including a voluntary donation to be included in the termly invoices. The P&C understand that families are busy and are sometimes unable to volunteer their time at school functions. This is therefore another opportunity to help the P&C raise funds for resources for our students. The donation amount is up to you and remember - every little bit counts. Kenso CaresWhen food scraps and other organic materials are sent tolandfill, they begin to rot anaerobically (without oxygen) andrelease greenhouse gases, primarily methane (CH4), whichcontributes to climate change. Many people don’t realise thatthe impact of methane on climate change is around 25 timesgreater than carbon dioxide (CO2).

Of course, transporting all of that heavy organic waste to landfillrequires big trucks which spew pollution and add to its carbonfootprint. To make matters worse, the rotting organic mattermixes with heavy metals and other chemicals from electronicsin landfill and creates a toxic sludge that can sometimes eat itsway through the clay lining of the landfill basin. Eventually, theseunderground toxins can make their way into the water supply.

How big is the problem?

By composting your food scraps instead of sending them tolandfill, households can significantly reduce their ClimateChange footprint. In fact, about 3% of Australia’s totalgreenhouse gas emissions comes from organic matter rottinganaerobically (without air) in landfills. To put that in context, thatis about as much as the entire country’s aviation industry.

The journey of food to our plate

Long before our food even gets to our plate; it has alreadyhad a long, resource-intensive journey. It takes a lot of water, fertilizer, energy, refrigeration, storage, packaging and transportfuel to grow your food and get it to the supermarket before yourtake it home. Composting your food waste is a good way of

reducing the impact of landfill waste, but it’s also important tominimize food waste in the first place.

Visit the Food Lovers Republic to learn how you can minimizethe amount of food that becomes waste in the first place byplanning your meals, creating shopping lists and storing yourleftovers well.

Also please visit the Compost Revolution website and orderyour very cheap compost bin.

We are working hard at KPS to collect our food scraps and turnthem into compost with our new bins. Come and visit them andadd to them if you desire, they are under the big Fig Tree nearthe Bowral Street gate.

Volunteer Ethics Teachers Required forKensington Public School

Dear Parents and Carers,

Ethics classes are available at Kensington Public School asan option for children who don’t attend Special ReligiousEducation (SRE/scripture).

Ethics classes support children in developing skills in ethicalreasoning, critical thinking, collaborative enquiry and how tosupport their arguments with evidence. The lesson materialshave been approved by the Department of Education.

We do not have enough volunteer ethics teachers atKensington Public School to meet the demand for classes in2018. The more children and stages we have requests for, themore teachers are needed.

Volunteering is a great way to engage with the school.Volunteer ethics teachers do not need a background inteaching or ethics, just a willingness to learn how to deliverclasses. They must complete a two-day workshop and otheronline training and accreditation requirements. The approvedlesson materials are provided. Ethics teachers must commit toconduct classes each week at the school during school termsfor at least one year.
