HISTORY OF KEYBOARD FESTIVALS TABLE OF CONTENTS
This year marks the 75th Anniversary to the Church Music Department of theMississippi Baptist Convention Board.
In 1935, B. B. McKinney, the author of so many well-loved hymns, was employed asmusic editor of the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville. He served there until1941, when the Department of Church Music was established by the MississippiBoard and he was named as Secretary. Soon after, other states would begin to orga-nize and make plans toward establishing a State Music Department.
Arkansas would be the first and would immediately employ Ruth Nininger, who hadalready established a model for state sponsored festivals and music training events forall ages. Oklahoma was second. Mississippi would follow soon after. B. B. McKinneyand others have played a huge role in the establishment of this position. He actuallywrote an article in The Baptist Record, news journal of the Mississippi BaptistConvention Board, and outlined a job description for the role of a State MusicSecretary.
The first director of the state’s newly formed Church Music Department was intro-duced in The Baptist Record on September 6, 1945, as Luther Harrison. In 1946, hisdetailed report of highlights included 200 participants in the “hymn playing competi-tion.”
After the automobile accident and passing of Luther Harrison, W. C. Morgan wouldtake up the mantle of the leader of the Church Music Department and would report in1949 that in the “hymn playing competition” 48 children across the state of Mississippiwould play before the Convention on December 30, and all make Superior. By 1950,this number would triple and in 1959 would proclaim 425 students. In the 70’s throughthe 90’s under Director Dan C. Hall and Consultant Dot Pray’s leadership, these num-bers would continually increase. To date, the eleven keyboard festivals held statewideboast an average of 850 students in grades K-12.
