RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
SHOPPING CENT$ Sales have been very light lately. Please remember
that the profits from Shopping Cent$ help minimize
tuition increases at St. John the Baptist School. The
effect last year was a savings of about $75 per
student. Families with multiple students saved even
more in tuition! We have many regular customers who
buy weekly - thank you! Now we would love to see
some new families using Shopping Cent$, especially
the school families. This fundraiser doesn't cost you
anything extra; it's just a change in how you pay for
your purchases. As our sales decline so does the
profits back to the school and in the end will result in
families having to pay more for tuition. If you haven't
used Shopping Cent$ please give it a try; every little
bit helps!
ARE YOU AWARE BY DONNA SUNDERHAUS
STEWARDSHIP OF FINANCE
ARE YOU AWARE that this is Mrs. Crowder’s
last full week with us? She has been an example of
Christianity to all of us. Her dedication to her job and
to us has been absolutely wonderful. She is surely
going to be missed. We are happy that she is able to
retire, but sorry to see her go. She has been with St.
John’s full time since 1991. We wish her a long and
happy retirement and thank her for her many years of
service.
ARE YOU AWARE that our school offered a
“Random Acts of Math” class for parents? It was a
program that teaches ways to sneak in math mastery at
home during the summer break. Several parents took
advantage of this neat course.
ARE YOU AWARE that our Fourth graders
visited Great American Ball Park and the Cincinnati
Reds Hall of Fame to take part in a “Science of
Baseball” field trip? Students took a tour of Great
American Ball Park and participated in a “Science of
Baseball” program to learn how force, friction and air
density affect the game.
I HAVE LEARNED that God loves us because of
who God is, not because of anything we did or didn’t
do.
PARISH LIBRARY SPOT In the introduction to 7 Secrets of
Confession by Vinney Flynn, Father
Michael Gaitley states “If you’ve
ever dragged your feet on the way to
confession, gotten discouraged
about confessing the same sins over
and over, or wondered how your
confessions could be more fruitful,
you’ll love this book. It turns what many see as a
tiresome obligation into a precious longed-for
encounter with the Lord.”

MUSICIAN’S NOTES
L ast week I began writing about the psalms
that we are singing each week. I would like
to continue on that subject this week. I
used a term last week that many of you
probably never had heard before. That term was
Revised Grail Psalter. So, naturally you may be
wondering what is the “RGP”.
In the years leading up to Vatican II, when
the liturgy was still in Latin, moves were made to
include greater participation of the assembly at Mass.
Permission was granted to sing the psalms in
English. A French Jesuit priest Fr. Joseph Gelineau
prepared a French translation of the psalms. Then a
group of women in England formed an institute
called “The Grail” and translated Fr. Gelineau’s
work into English. The full version of all 150 psalms
(the number of psalms in the Book of Psalms) was
released in 1963. These “Grail” psalms were very
suited to choral singing.
As you know things never stay the same; they
are always changing. So, we had this “fine”
translation of the psalms that many composers from
the 1980’s on began setting these psalms to
contemporary melodies. Many of these comprise
what is found in the Psalter of our Gather hymnal.
Then, at the same time that the English speaking
bishops were working on the new translation of the
Roman Missal, it was decided that the Grail psalms
should be revised. This new revision was given the
recognitio (review and approval) by the Vatican in
2010. This made the Revised Grail Psalter the
official English Psalter
for the United States.
Thus these psalm texts
will be the ones used in
all future editions of
liturgical books
published in the United
States and in all other
English speaking
countries as well.
So, jumping
ahead to 2013-2014,
GIA Publications
released two volumes
of these revised psalms.
These are the psalms
from which I choose
each Sunday.
I hope this helps you understand a little better
about what the Revised Grail Psalter is, and how it
came to be what it is today.
In addition, I would like to say Happy Feast
Day to everyone as today we celebrate our patronal
feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist.
And, I would like to wish Pat Crowder a very
happy retirement.
Have a great week everyone!!

Lay Pastoral Ministry Program Classes begin in late August at the main campus in Mt.
Washington and St. Ignatius on Cincinnati’s west side.
We are currently interviewing potential students for
summer admission. The LPMP is sponsored by the
Archdiocese of Cincinnati and offers lay men and
women the opportunity to grow in faith, knowledge
and skills and to gain the confidence to become what
Pope Francis calls, “missionary disciples.” Evening
and Saturday classes in Scripture, Theology and
Pastoral Studies allow you to maintain job and family
commitments. Whether you are preparing for staff
level ministry in a parish, school or non-profit agency,
enhancing volunteer skills, seeking spiritual growth or
discerning a call to the permanent diaconate, the LPMP can help. Call 513-231-1200 for information or to set up a personal appointment.

One Faith, One Hope, One Love Building a Strong Diocese and Strong Parishes
T he archdiocese of Cincinnati began almost 200 years ago in 1821.
Our parish began almost 40 years later, in 1860. Over the decades
the archdiocese and the parish grew because of the sacrifices of
our forbearers and Catholics were able not only to build our net-
work of parishes, schools, hospitals, etc., but also to maintain and improve
them.
Sixty years ago, in 1955, under the leadership of Archbishop Alter, our arch-
diocese had a major diocesan-wide campaign. The goal of this campaign was
$12,000,000 (equivalent to $138,000,000 in today’s money ). The fruits of this
campaign are still in evidence today: the refurbishment of the cathedral and the
construction of LaSalle, McAuley, Badin, and Moeller High Schools, plus high
schools in Dayton and additions to other high schools and the seminary build-
ing.
After consultation with priests and laity, Archbishop Schnurr decided that
now was a time for us to have another diocesan-wide campaign in order to con-
tinue our strong heritage of supporting structures, services, and ministries to
meet the current and future needs of the Church. Therefore, we as an archdio-
cese are embarking upon a five-year, $130,000,000 campaign named One
Faith, One Hope, One Love. This campaign is designed to help address
needs in the following areas:
1) Catholic Education
2) Fostering Vocations
3) Caring for Retired Diocesan Priests
4) Catholic Charities
5) Local Parish Priorities
Every parish in the archdiocese has been assigned a fair-share goal for this cam-
paign. Every Catholic household will be asked to make a sacrificial gift to this
campaign. We are not all asked to make the same gift, but we are asked to make
the same sacrifice.
Our diocese began
in 1821. By 1850
the diocese had
grown because of
the immigration of
Irish and German
Catholics. It was
split into three
dioceses:
Columbus,
Cleveland, and
Cincinnati, which
became an
archdiocese.
The Cincinnati
Archdiocese is
known for its
generosity to
national
collections. For
example, in the 26
years of the
Collection for the
Retired Religious,
Cincinnati is
consistently one of
the top five
donors (although
we are in size the
38th diocese). We
average about
$800,000 a year
for that collection.
ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST 06/28/2015
8
Our parish goal is $950,000. We are asked to try our best to meet this goal in
pledges form our parishioners payable over a five-year period. In addition,
20% of each parishioner’s gift will be returned to our parish for specific needs.
If we exceed our goal, 60% of the excess will come back to the parish.
Already, as of this writing, from just a few initial pledges, our
parish has raised $413,500 which is 43% of our campaign goal.
The active fundraising part for our campaign begins this weekend and takes
place over the next couple of months. In order to begin the organization of the campaign, I have
asked a few parishioners, under the chairmanship of Al Grote, to become involved in key cam-
paign leadership positions.
You will be hearing more about this important campaign in the coming days and weeks. For
now, I am asking that you do three things for this campaign:
1. Become involved as a volunteer when asked. We need to have as many parishioners as
possible involved for this campaign to be successful. Remember: many hands make
light work!
2. Listen to our volunteers when they speak with you about the campaign needs and ask
for your support for this important effort.
3. Please consider giving a sacrificial gift to this important campaign.
