apital of Tartastan, Kazan is located 800 km to the East of Moscow, on the confluence of the Kazanka and Volga rivers. With its 1.3 million inhabitants, the city decided, in 1997, to equip itself with an urban metro network. The project aims to commission an overall network of 42.3 km, spread over 3 lines. The works, which began in 1997, are due to be completed in 2023. The first line was put into service in 2005 on the occasion of the 1,000th Anniversary of the City. At that time, the mayor of Kazan called on MÜHLHÄUSER to supply a 5.89m. diameter tunnelling machine. This machine, already used for the Copenhagen Metro, was entirely renovated for it to perfectly adapt to the new boring conditions: new cutting head, increase in size of the front shield, change of the intermediary and rear end panel shields for the installation of 22 thrust cylinders. In 2008, Kazmetrostroy (the authority in charge of the construction of the Kazan Metro) ordered a second machine from MÜHLHÄUSER, similar to the first. This tunnelling machine, entirely built at the Le Creusot workshops, will be delivered to the client in July 2009. At present, the construction project anticipates 2 phases : Phase 1 will comprise 5 stations spread over 7.2 km (2005). Phase 2 foresees an extension to 2 stations, Victory Avenue to the South (2007) and Zarechnaya to the North (2009). The first tunnelling machine supplied by MÜHLHÄUSER excavated a tunnel of 1,790 m between the stations Kremlevskaya and Polash Tukaya, thereby completing phase 1 of Line 1. The second tunnelling machine will be used within the framework of the extension to this Line 1: it will excavate the 2,000 m which separate the stations Kozya Sloboda and Moskovskaya, to the west of the city.
