History:

Catholic Education began on the site in 1874 making Kavanagh College one of theoldest Catholic schools in New Zealand. The College serves the city area andenvirons, and aims to provide excellence in education for Catholic students andothers whose parents choose a Catholic education for their children.

Kavanagh College was established in 1989 after the amalgamation of MoreauCollege, St Paul’s High School and St Edmund’s School. Moreau College wasamalgamated earlier from St Dominic’s Girls’ College and St Philomena’s Girls’College. St Dominic’s was the first Catholic secondary school in New Zealand whichwas quickly followed by Christian Brothers’ High School.

The founding schools of Kavanagh College have provided a rich history ofachievement for the new College. Each founding school has a history based around areligious order and all these traditions contribute to the life of our school. KavanaghCollege is proud of its links with the Dominican Order, the Mercy Order and theChristian Brothers.

Kavanagh College is a Catholic, Co-Educational, Years 7-13 school situated in the centreof Dunedin City, New Zealand. Kavanagh College is known for its balanced academic,cultural and sporting curriculum, combining modern facilities with the latest technology in avibrant University City environment. International students are also welcomed andsupported through to graduation.

Since Kavanagh College opened in 1989, it has established itself as a very effectiveco-educational school that focuses on three aspects of excellence:

Our mission has become more focused. Through a planned process with the Board,Proprietor, parents, staff and students including international students, we havereorganized the curriculum so that both male and female students are successful. Wehave invested heavily in sport, culture and technology, and results achieved reflect thatcommitment. We appoint staff who relate to students as people. We continue to expressour faith in our daily lives. Relating the Gospels to our lives is central to the success wehave had. Excellent teaching, supported by modern resources and Chaplains, continuesto give students the confidence to embrace the secular world armed with a personal faithand confirmed beliefs. We welcome your interest in the College and would be happy torespond to any issues that might arise.

Special CharacterAs a Catholic College, Kavanagh College supports parents in their role as first educators oftheir children’s faith. This support is offered through Religious Education Programmesoffered at all levels of the school, prayers at the beginning of each day, class and schoolmasses, opportunities for reconciliation, special liturgies for the Church’s year, retreats andweekly assemblies. In all these programmes the school promotes the dignity of theindividual as a child of God.

Preference of Enrolment is given to those have an established link with the Catholic Church

through Baptismmembership of a Parishor decided by your Parish Priest

A preference certificate must accompany your application for enrolment.

Students without preference are welcome to applyenrolment is restricted to 5% of the total roll

Zoning does not apply to Kavanagh College. The main contributing schools are the Parish schools in the city. Enrolments come from both urban and rural schools.

In recent years, the Proprietor has determined that

students without preference who have been in

Catholic contributing schools, have already

established a connection with the Special

Character of the school and should be treated as

Preference for the purpose of enrolment. He has

also determined that brothers and sisters of

students enrolling without preference should be

given the opportunity to enrol, as the family has

demonstrated a commitment to the Special

Character. If preference applications exceed the

places available, then these determinations may

not apply.

What is the cost of attending Kavanagh College?

• Attendance Dues:These are fees paid to the Proprietor, The Bishop, for building the school and maintaining the buildings. Years 7 and 8 $343.48 per annumYears 9 to13 $690.00 per annum

• Fees Paid to the School:Religious Education $26Photocopying $10

Plus materials used in individual subjects that have a take-home component.

The College is very mindful of the burden of cost to parents and can assist with a range of payment options. The Board hold the view that payment should not be a barrier to enrolment.

• Approximately 700 of the 900 students take part in at least one sport.

• All major codes are supported. Other sports take place according to student interest, parent support and staff strengths.

• We have representatives in Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Golf, Hockey, Ice Hockey, Miniball, Netball, Orienteering, Rowing, Rugby, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Waterpolo.

• The network is accessible from home.

Senior students may be offered the opportunity to study subjects not offered by the College either by correspondence or VLN. These will be subject to confirmation of availability.

Uniform CodeAn outward sign of loyalty and pride in the college is shown by the correct wearing of the school uniform. The following clarifies the expectation with regard to uniform.

Hair style should be reasonable, simple and natural in colour. Hair must be tied back off theface. Hair trimmings, navy only.

Students do not wear make up or nail polish to school. Boys are clean shaven.

Students in Years 11-13 must wear the school blazer in Terms 2 and 3. Only school badges are to be worn on Blazers

Under garments should not be visible.

The school uniform is stocked by Arthur Barnett’s and Uniform Direct. The girl's kilt can alsobe supplied by Helean Kiltmakers.

The Kavanagh College Uniform Shop has a supply of second hand uniforms available. The Uniform Shop is open Tuesdays 3 pm to 4 pm. Contact Linda George – 4763137.
