Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) was established in mid �fties as a project of Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) and incorporated as a public limited company in 1957. KS&EW is entirely owned by Government of Pakistan and working as an autonomous commercial organization under Ministry of Defence Production. It is managed by a Board of Directors with Managing Director as the Chief Executive. KS&EW is Integrated Management System (ISO 9001 : 2015, ISO 14001 : 2015 & OHSAS 18001 : 2007) certi�ed from M/s Lloyds Quality Assurance UK.

KS&EW is situated at west wharf Karachi and spread over an area of 71 acres. It has a large shipbuilding hall, two block fabrication areas, three shipbuilding berths, two graving docks, a well equipped machine shop and a large grit blasting and painting facility with modern machinery for paint application under controlled environment as per international standards. A Ship Lift & Transfer System with a lifting capacity of 7881 tons and 13 in number parking stations is being installed which is progressing towards completion.

KS&EW is the only shipyard and oldest heavy engineering establishment of Pakistan catering for the shipbuilding, ship repair and general / heavy engineering. It has played a historical role in transferring of technologies and broadening the industrial base of the country.

Agosta 90B Submarine

The F22P (Zul�qar Class Frigate) is a multi mission frigate with state of the art weapon and combat system is a prestigious addition to Pakistan Navy Fleet. The frigate carry Harbin Z-9 helicopter and are armed with a 76 mm gun, 30mm type 730B close-in weapons systems, FM-90N surface-to-air missiles, C-802 surface-to-surface missiles, ET-52C torpedoes and RDC-32 anti-submarine rockets.

KS&EW has participated in the construction of modern AGOSTA 90 B submarines currently in service with Pakistan Navy. Construction involved ToT element in which a number of KS&EW engineers were trained by DCN, France. Construction of all three submarines has been completed and retro�tting of MESMA AIP System is in progress as a second phase of the project.

AGOSTA 90B submarine features higher performance with modern combat system, increased level of automation, increased endurance with MESMA AIP, a deeper diving capability of 320m and reduced acoustic signatures through installation of new suspension and isolation system for onboard machinery.

KS&EW is basically designed to build and repair ships. Since 1957 when it commenced its commercial production, it has built over 450 vessels of di�erent types and sizes for national / international clients. It is well equipped to built various types of ships upto 26,000 TDW including tugs, Dredgers, Hopper barges, Ferries, Fishing trawlers, Launches and Special purpose craft etc. There are three shipbuilding berths, each equipped with cranes and allied facilities where construction of vessels can be undertaken simultaneously.

This type of Mini Submarine can be used for various purposes like attacking enemy units in harbour with Frogmen/Charriots, at sea with torpedos, at shore installations by commandos etc. Other uses include mine laying, defensive barrier in shallow waters, advance pickets duties, intelligence gathering etc.

Main Role Includes

State of the Art Floating Dock facility indigenously constructed at KS&EW. Built in various sizes ranging from 1000 — 5000 tons lifting capacity, the dock provides extremely sophisticated mini dockyard facilities at point of choice. The facility is extremely useful for ports not having Dry Docks. Can be towed and parked at small ports for use as required.

Well-equipped facilities exist at KS&EW for undertaking all types of above and under water repairs of ships and o�shore drilling rigs. Above water repairs of vassels upto 26,000 TDW can be undertak-en at KS&EW Docks, which have following capacities.

In addition to two Dry Docks, KS&EW houses two Quay Walls measuring 500 M & 165 M respectively for above water repairs. Both the berths are equipped with cranes and supported by other related infrastructure to undertake repairs in an expeditious manner.

Material Testing Laboratory

KS&EW Central Laboratory was established in 1960, though, initially for rendering assistance to quality control & checks on KS&EW's projects. The scope of work has now been extended to undertake variety of test services like metallurgical analysis, mechanical, physical, chemical and welding tests required for various outside agencies / clients. These also cover the chemical composition and testing of metals, ferrous and non-ferrous, alloys, refractory, cement etc. The tests are carried out in accordance with BSS/ASTM

-er's requirement.
