The 2016 Kappa State Leadership Class shared their thoughts via video and received their pins during an afternoon session in Little Rock on September 24. Pictured above are the class members who were present. Their individual

participation throughout the day was most evident and welcome.

Kappa State Members Gathered

On September 24 Kappa State members from 30 chapters met for the annual Fall Executive Board and Members Meeting. The business of the day began with meetings of many of the state committees. During that time oth-ers visited, enjoyed a continental breakfast buffet and viewed project dis-plays prepared by the past year’s Education Foundation and SEEK grant re-cipients. In the noon business session, the Executive Board approved pur-chase of a fire-proof file cabinet for storing Kappa State historical documents and materials. Emergency Fund collections totaled $570. This money is dis-persed to DKG members who suffer loss from natural disasters. See pictures and articles throughout this newsletter for other recognitions and activities that made up the general sessions.

Three breakout periods with four workshops each were provided. Many sessions provided guidance for officer performance at the chapter level. Others bolstered leadership skills, provided retirement information and pro-gram suggestions. The workshops gave attendees an opportunity to earn up to three professional development hours. Comments from participants indi-cate the success of the sessions:

“Mrs. Wisner was wonderful and passionate about her books!” “Very good—I loved the presenters.” “Great sessions! Thanks for all the work!”

President Candi Martin presented a Kappa State scholarship to Nanette Berry, Alpha Sigma Chapter. Nanette is working on a doctorate at UALR.

One outstanding DKG mem-ber from each state in the Southeast Region is recognized during the regional breakfast at International Convention. These 12 sisters are the Stars of the Southeast. Each Star is chosen by her state’s executive committee for her exceptional service within her state organiza-tion. President Candi Martin named the Arkansas Star with these

words:

“Kappa State Organization’s Star has been a member of DKG since 1979. During this time, she has served as Chapter President and was recently installed as the president of her second chapter. She has served on numerous committees at her local chapters. She is a graduate of Kappa State Leadership Seminar. She has chaired committees at the state level and served as Recording and Corre-sponding Secretary. She always is in attendance at state meetings and area meetings wearing a big smile and a friendly disposition. She has attended Southeast Regional Conferences and International Conventions and loves the connections and friendships she has

forged through her many DKG experiences.

She currently serves as the Chair of Kappa State Records and Properties Committee and with great joy has worked tirelessly on the daunting task of retrieving, organizing, copying, cataloging, and filing thousands and thousands of materials for the state or-ganization. She is using this information to write an updated his-

tory of Kappa State. Terri Smith-Leins is the first person her state president has encountered who enthusiastically asked to serve as Committee Chair for a second

biennium!

Candi’s Comments:

What Can One Member Do?

Annie Webb Blanton was one woman, one educator, one voice. However this one woman had a huge vision and a fiery spirit that would not let her believe that “one person can’t get much done.” When our International President, Carolyn Pittman, gave her acceptance speech at International Convention this summer, she al-luded to “The Butterfly Effect.” It theorizes that the flapping of just one butterfly’s tiny wings can cause enough movement of air as it travels far-ther away from that butterfly to create the force of a hurricane. This is a theory of physicists, not of butterfly lovers, not of big dreamers, not even of Annie Webb Blanton. Carolyn reminded us that we also have this kind of potential in education and in DKG. Think about it. Just one teacher can affect so many students; then those students can affect so many more and... You get the picture. The same thing is true of our DKG experience. It only took one person to nominate you for mem-bership, but you may nominate many. You may mentor many. This is how our Society grew from just one woman’s idea into an international soci-ety of women educators from 17 countries.

One thing that all DKG members have in com-mon is that we are educators. We all share that DNA, but we do not all teach the same things in the same ways. We are all DKG members, but we do not express our DKG-ness in the same ways. What matters is that we express it in SOME way. I encourage you to make the most of your DKG membership, whatever that means to you. I hope that it means showing up to chapter meetings. I hope it means learning as much as you can about the Society. I hope it means supporting your chapter projects. I hope it means helping your chapter leaders. I hope it means serving on com-mittees. I hope it means leading. HOW we make the most of DKG isn’t so important. THAT we make the most of it is essential. It is in flapping our wings together that we can realize the great-est impact we can make as educators and as DKG members.

Let’s get flapping!

Cornetet Awards Go to

Two Arkansans Two Arkansas teachers learned recently

that they were chosen to receive Cornetet Individual Professional Development Awards. Laura West (Delta ), Hot Springs, has received a Cornetet Award in the amount of $1870. She plans to use her award to attend the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) 63rd Annual Convention. Lindsay Davis-Harp, Har-rison, has received a Cornetet Award in the amount of $957.80 to attend the Conference for Arkansas Kindergarten Teachers.

These awards to fund professional devel-opment are made three times per year and are available to both DKG members and non-members. The next application deadline is February 1.

Angela Caldwell, Vice President for Techni-cal Education at Black River Technical Col-lege, completed her doctorate this sum-mer. Angie (Kappa) received the 2013 Marjorie Jeanne Allen DKG International Scholarship.

Internment Museum Visited by Epsilon Chapter Members Contributed by Susan Bitley, Epsilon Chapter

On a recent chapter outing, members of Epsilon Chapter, Pine Bluff, stepped back 75 years into history as they toured the World War II Japanese American In-ternment Museum in McGehee, Arkansas. Housed in a historic brick and wood railroad station, the museum contains letters, autobiographies, litera-ture, photographs, and other media which chronicle the lives of the Japanese Americans confined to the camps in Jerome and Rohwer, Arkansas. These camps were two of the eight internment camps established in the United States during World War II.

The outing included a luncheon of authentic southern cuisine at the Pickens Commissary/Store and Restaurant at Walnut Lake in Pick-ens. The restaurant is on the original Pickens Plantation established in the 1880s that is still owned and farmed by the R. A. Pickens family.

For 2017-2019 State Officers

It is time to begin the process of se-lecting the Kappa State officers for the next biennium and the Kappa State Nominations Committee needs your help. The following state offices need to be filled: President, First Vice President, Second Vice Presi-dent and Secretary.

Do you know what it takes to qualify? According to the Kappa State Stand-ing Rules: “A nominee for state organization president should have served as chapter president and have had state organization committee ex-perience. Nominees for other of-fices should have served as chapter officers and/or state committee chairs. The first and second vice-presidents do not automatically ad-vance to the presidency.” Start looking at your chapter and encourage your members to accept the challenge. Don’t forget to look in the mirror as well. It is a wonderful opportunity for service, leadership, and friendship.

For Kappa State Education Foundation Board of Trustees

Are you aware that the Kappa State Nominations Committee also is re-sponsible for proposing two members to serve on the Kappa State Educa-tion Foundation Board of Trustees? These two positions will be elected by secret ballot by the Kappa State Executive Board at the 2017 Kappa State Convention. Trustees serve for

a six-year term.

Eligibility for nomination and elec-tion requires the following: (a) hav-ing good standing in Kappa State Or-ganization for at least eight (8) years; (b) having served a term as chapter president, (c) having served as a state officer or state committee chairman, and (d) having a thorough knowledge and intent to carry out The Delta Kappa Gamma Society In-

ternational’s purposes and policies.

2016 SEEK Grants Presented

As part of the Kappa State SEEK

project to support early career teachers, each year $200 grants are awarded to teachers in their first four years in the profession. Two such awards were made recently.

At Fall Meeting Cathy Toney, Kappa State 2nd Vice President and Con-vention Chairman, issued an invita-tion for all Kappa State members to attend the 2017 state convention at Lake Point Convention Center near Russellville. The convention will be a three day celebration of Kappa State on June 9-11. Make plans now to join in the fun.

The Kappa State Education Foundation Contributed by Sharon Rapp, Foundation Board of Trustees Chair

Members of the Board of Trustees of the Kappa State Education Foundation, want you to know:

1st What the Foundation is: A domestic non-profit 501 (c) (3) incorporated in 1982, it operates from annual income (including honorariums, memorials, bequests, and other gifts) plus the interest earned from the permanent fund.

2nd What the Foundation does: It awards grants of $500 for selected projects that promote excellence in education.

3rd What the Board does: Six elected members, plus three members of the Kappa State Executive Committee who serve ex-officio, manage the funds and award the grants. The Board has also, during the last couple of years, completed a revision of the Foundation constitution and bylaws, a clarification of the officers’ duties, and an update of information on the Kappa State website.

4th What you can do: Apply for a grant! The annual deadline is October 1. Both the information and the application can be found at the Kappa State Web Site under the Foundation tab: http://kappastate.weebly.com/education-foundation.html.

Donate! Please consider honoring a guest speaker or a birthday, roommates or grandchildren, a retirement or a promo-tion—or an award! Since much of the Foundation income is from interest earned and current interest rates are so low, contributions for honoraria and me-morials are important. Such gifts may be

made by an individual or a chapter.

On September 24, Foundation Board members Earlene Hankins and Sharon Rapp oversaw the raffling of two wreaths made by Nancy Rana of Heber Springs. The raffle raised $230 for the foundation.
