What do success, change, firsts, and commitment to others have in common?

All were a part of Kansas Wesleyan University’s Fiscal Year 2010! The University’s fiscal year – July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010 – was chocked full of great moments, many of which are recalled on the following pages, as are the names of those who so kindly provided monetary assistance to the University during the fiscal year.

Noting that it had selected an exceptional candidate, the Kansas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees on November 4, 2009, announced the hiring of Dr. Fletcher Lamkin as the 18th President of the University. Lamkin began his duties as KWU President in January 2010.

Lamkin was selected from a pool of 67 candidates who sought the Kansas Wesleyan presidency.

“We had a tremendous number of highly qualified candidates, and Dr. Lamkin definitely was at the top,” said then-Board of Trustees Vice Chair Kent Lambert, who chaired the search committee. “The fact that so many people wanted to be president of Kansas Wesleyan speaks highly of the University.”

Lamkin and his wife, Cindy, are no strangers to higher education. Fletcher Lamkin has more than 20 years of academic leadership, including seven years as a liberal arts college President; five years as Chief Academic Officer at West Point; eight years as a department head, program director, and faculty member at West Point; and one year as University Vice President for Institutional

Advancement. In addition to his Bachelor’s degree from the

U.S. Military Academy, Lamkin also received a Master of Science degree in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley; a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from Salve Regina College; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Washington.

Cindy Dunstan Lamkin is an accomplished musician and professor. She has extensive experience in academe, having built and directed music programs in higher education for more than 20 years. n

student successesFor the third consecutive year, KWU’s student

retention rate from fall to spring increased with the Fiscal Year 2010 total topping out at 90.5 percent. This was the highest retention percentage since Fiscal Year 2003. Additionally, the number of new traditional-aged undergraduates enrolled at Kansas Wesleyan in Fall 2009 rose to 321, up 10.3 percent from the previous year. Overall headcount was 852.

For the second consecutive year, members of the Debate and Forensics squad brought home four national championships from the Christian College National Tournament. John Mikolajcik continued a tradition begun by previous KWU squad members when he won the tournament’s Iron Man competition by amassing the most points in both debate and individual events. Mikolajcik added to his national championship count by winning the Lincoln Douglas Debate competition.  Meriah Forbes won a national championship in Prose Interpretation.  Kris

Schneider won a national championship in Dramatic Interpretation.

Total participation in student activities and intramurals in Fiscal Year 2010 was 7,545 with more than 50 events, leagues, and activities taking place. In all, 464 persons, including 34 staff/faculty members, participated in one or more events. Of those participating, 200 were new participants and 42 were first time freshmen.

Nine KWU students who competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing regional auditions in October 2009 all received either “Very Good” or “Excellent” ratings. Additionally, Aine Hakamatsuka placed first in the Sophomore Soprano Art Songs /Opera Areas Division, Matt Schwan placed second in the Senior Baritone/Bass Arts songs /Opera Areas Division and Joshua Tackett advanced to the semifinal round in his division.

Five KWU students were inducted as charter officers of the new Kappa Upsilon Pi chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon during a ceremony March 24, 2010. Lambda Alpha Epsilon is the Greek letter organization of the American Criminal Justice Association. Those officers included Heather Muilenburg, President; Patrick Shelton, Secretary; Cody Brunner, Sergeant at Arms; Peter Madrigal, Vice President; and Amanda Wilkinson, Treasurer. In April 2010, chapter members went to Oakdale Elementary School in Salina to teach and demonstrate forensic science techniques to a reading group that had just finished a reading module about crime scene detection. Activities included lifting fingerprints, comparing bullet slugs, and conducting a mock crime scene search.

Four KWU Sociology/Criminal Justice majors were among those who presented papers

at the 2010 Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting March 31-April 3, 2010. “Alienation and Economic Uncertainty in a Postindustrial Economy: How does the Changing Class Structure Limit Social Capital?” was presented by Dr. Tor Wynn, Assistant Professor of Sociology, and Audrey Riedl. “Media and the Decline of Trust: U.S. Trends in Social Capital, 1975-2005” was presented by Wynn, Patrick Shelton, Peter Madrigal, and Cody Brunner.

The Coyotes drew a No.5 seed in their quarter of the 32-team bracket and faced defending National Champion Morningside College, losing to the Mustangs 83-45.

During Fiscal Year 2010, KWU students and employees participated in and organized a number of events designed to help others.

In September 2009, a group of students in the Motor Behavior Class assisted with the Body Venture program at Cottonwood Elementary School. Body Venture is an educational exhibit that encourages students in grades K-5 to eat smart and play hard.

In December 2009, KWU joined with local United Methodist congregations in the fight against malaria in Africa by raising money for the global initiative Nothing But Nets.

In August of 2009, the Memorial Library unveiled a new catalog and library website.  With this new catalog came a partnership with the Salina Public Library.  The two libraries now share catalogs, allowing patrons to see the holding of both libraries in one combined catalog.  There also is a courier service going between the two locations daily. This service allows patrons to pickup and drop off materials at the location that is most convenient to them.  This partnership has been a successful venture so far, adding greatly to the number of materials available to KWU students and employees. Additionally, the number of patrons utilizing Memorial Library stayed consistent with a little more than a 1 percent increase.  Online database usage continues to rise with a 20% increase in usage over Fiscal Year 2009.

Forty high school artists from across the state converged on the KWU campus in November 2009 for “The Continuous Line: Off the Wall,” a multi-media art gallery installation workshop with the KWU Department of Art and local artists. During the event, the high school students learned about the creative process of installation art by

transforming common materials into an interactive environmental sculpture.

Department of Art Chair Brad Anderson was named the 2009-2010 Exemplary Teacher during the University’s annual Honors Convocation in April 2010. Sponsored jointly by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church and the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company, the Exemplary Teacher Award is presented each year to a Kansas Wesleyan University faculty member who shows excellence in teaching; is active in his/her profession and professional societies; provides exemplary service to the University and broader community; demonstrates cooperative and supportive attitudes towards colleagues, students and others; and is committed to value-centered education.

Thanks to a $37,000 grant from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund in the Fall of 2009, Kansas Wesleyan University was able to continue its Healthy Living on Campus initiative in partnership with University United Methodist Church. The program was developed to encourage students to make healthy lifestyle choices including eating nutritious foods and engaging in adequate physical activity.

KWU’s Athletic Training Program received continued accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. The program’s next comprehensive review is scheduled for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Avi Geva, a woman who survived a Nazi death camp, a concentration camp, and a 400-mile forced march, was one of the featured speakers during KWU’s 2010 Holocaust Remembrance Week April 19-23, 2010.

At the conclusion of the Fall 2009 semester, the KWU Master of Business Administration (MBA) program hit a milestone when the 500th student graduated from the program. The MBA program was established at KWU in 1994.

The KWU Teacher Education Department played host to approximately 90 Teacher Education students and representatives from area colleges and universities who attended a workshop in cooperative instructional strategies. Alumnus Lisa Hall (’99), an English as a Second Language teacher in Salina USD 305, led the workshop, which focused on Kagan structures.

KWU became a tobacco-free campus on April 5, 2010. The change in policy was made by the President’s Cabinet to help create a healthier campus environment for students, employees, and visitors. The decision was made in light of smoking ban legislation signed into law by then-Governor Mark Parkinson.

During its annual meeting in April 2010, the Kansas Broadcast Education Association (KBEA) elected Kansas Wesleyan University’s Paul Green as its Chairman. This is the second time that Green, who serves as Production Manager in the Department of Communication Studies and Theatre Arts, has been elected to the top KBEA post.

The long-time Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department became a thing of the past in the Spring of 2010. In its place is the new Department of Sport and Exercise Science, a change that not only better represents what the department is all about, but also includes a new major: Exercise Science, which includes three tracks – Pre-Physical Therapy, Personal Training, and Corporate Fitness and Wellness.

Then-Congressman Jerry Moran served as KWU’s Commencement Speaker on May 8, 2010, in the Salina Bicentennial Center. No stranger to serving others, Moran encouraged KWU’s newest graduates to commit to a life of serving others. n

Thank you, Friends and Alumni, for making the Student Activities Center possible! Pledges are nearly all collected for this project, which will help us be in position for future projects and campaigns. This year’s finances reflect the importance of continued Heritage Society giving.

Founders Day in February again honored those who decided to make a lasting impact on the University by including KWU in a planned or deferred gift such as a will or trust or making a gift to the endowment.  Dr. Gordon Maxwell, former Board of Trustees member and Steve Richards (’73) told those assembled about the importance of giving to KWU.  Five new endowed scholarships were started during Fiscal Year 2010, each representing a different meaningful reason to support the University.  One was a memorial scholarship started by an alumna. Another was an estate gift. A third scholarship was the result of a partnership with a local foundation. The 50-year reunion class established a scholarship. Our

Kansas West Conference partners at Miltonvale United Methodist Church also established a scholarship.

The fiscal year continued efforts in the area of stewardship including a new partnership with the online marketing group Informz.  The Informz product was used to send targeted emails to keep alumni apprised of happenings at KWU.  Informz also was utilized to develop surveys and receive online reservations for events.

The KWU Alumni Association funded a variety of grants during Fiscal Year 2010, including grants for KWU’s student initiated and run Project HERO and Project HUNT, Buck Meals at University United Methodist Church, KWU students to assist with Vacation Bible Schools, KWU students to attend and present papers at the Midwest Sociological Society meeting in Chicago, KWU amateur radio students to attend the Daytona Hamvention, a convention of amateur radio enthusiasts. n
