What did you learn in K1? I learned that everything in class is fun! The most fun is when I showed everyone my wallet during morning meeting. And I learned my letters. What can you do with letters? You can make words with them, like c-a-t, cat! Ch-t-i-r-u-s makes trees! H-s-c-z makes houses. What did you learn about numbers? “Franklin can count in twos and tie his shoes…” I can tie my shoes! AND I can count in twos! 2-4-6-8-10-12-14-16-18-20-22-24-26! Thatʼs what I can do to count in twos. How about tens? 10-20-30-40-50-60-70-80-90-100! What did you learn about stories? We learn stuff from stories, like from Franklin we learned not to go anywhere your mom says not to. When my mom says not to do something one more time, I still try to do it… Ugh! Then my daddy covers it and says, “Nice try!” Whatever I do, Skyelar does. Wherever I go, Skyelar goes. We actually follow each other… What did you learn about plants? How to grow them. First, you need a seed, put it in soil. Cover the soil. Then you put it outside so the sunlight can go through. Then you need to give it enough water and air. And then it grows! What did you like most about K1? I love everything about K1!

CHILD AS A LEARNER

Kaia is a dynamic young communicator. She expresses her ideas and feelings well through speaking, drawing and through play. She is also a good listener who picks up and retains many details from conversations.

Kaia is also an inquirer who loves discovering new ideas. She asks many questions every day which lead to new revelations for her and her classmates. Her questions go beyond just enquiring into why things are. Kaia delves into concepts of who, what, where and how in order to satisfy her curiosity.

Kaia has made great progress in staying on task and completing activities. She enjoys working in groups and allowing friends’ creativity to influence her own. She switches effortlessly between leading and following depending on what the circumstances demand.

Kaia shows great respect for others. She is good at sharing materials and taking turns.

Both Kaia’s gross motor skills and her fine motor skills are well developed, as is her spatial awareness.

Insofar as thinking skills go, Kaia is not only able to comprehend new ideas; she is also able to interpret these concepts and internalize them. Furthermore, Kaia is able to evaluate opinions based on specific criteria given and apply newly-acquired knowledge to her world.

Kaia’s innate curiosity unlocks worlds of learning not only for her, but also for her classmates.

ENGLISHMs. Adéle Booysen

Kaia has made great progress this year insofar as listening to her peers, allowing them to express their ideas and considering their input. She has successfully learned to curb her excitement by controlling her output volume. Nowadays, Kaia rarely needs reminders to use an inside voice. Kaia speaks clearly and is able to express her ideas logically. She understands and employs humor when appropriate.

Kaia loves listening to stories read and has made wonderful progress in reading independently. She shows understanding by responding with relevant questions and comments. Kaia can easily recall details from previously-read texts. She knows all of the letter names and their corresponding single sounds as well as several double-consonant sounds (sh, ch, th). She also enjoyed working with Sicilia, her second-grade reading buddy.

Kaia has a good pencil grip and is making progress insofar as writing legibly. Kaia is able to create meaningful stories. She independently adds words and labels to her stories and is able to read her own writing. Currently, Kaia spells words on the basis of sounds without regard for conventional spalling patterns. She uses beginning, middle and ending sounds to make words, and intermixes upper and lowercase letters.

INDONESIANMs. Yuni Triana

This semester in Bahasa Indonesia, K1 students learned to express themselves using more descriptive words, including rhyming words and synonyms. They gained more confidence in expressing their thoughts orally using formal Indonesian. Students were encouraged to explain drawings made in class. Using simple sentences, they gave details regarding the sequence of events in their illustrations. With regards to listening, students grew in their understanding of simple sentences and instructions. Following our unit on stories, the students were able to identify the title of Indonesian stories. They were also able to use simple sentences to talk about the beginning, middle and end of the stories as well as about the characters.

Kaia cooperates willingly and enthusiastically during Indonesian class. She shows engagement, even though she finds difficulty in understanding the language. She is always eager to perform assignments. Kaia enjoys learning to pronounce new words. She is able use Indonesian greetings.

MANDARINMs. Chunli Niu

This semester, during the Chinese Culture Festival, the K1 students were taught much about Spring Festival, including the legends of the twelve zodiacs. In addition, the students made firework crafts, lanterns and hong bao. They decorated trees with pink plum blossoms, and they performed songs and dances during a whole-school assembly. With regards to the units of inquiry, the students were taught new Chinese songs, words, rhymes and characters. They learned many traditional Chinese stories associated with our unit on stories. They explored language and art through calligraphy and Chinese painting, especially during our unit on plants.

Kaia is able to understand simple daily conversations and sentences, such as: ni xi huan shenme yan se? and xi shou. She uses Chinese to talk about math concepts. She can count up to 100 and knows the date, months and days of the week in Chinese. Kaia can independently make handicrafts following the teacher’s instructions in Chinese. She enjoys and stays focused during story telling. Kaia loved to think and explore during Units of Inquiry and inquired into different parts of plants in Chinese.

Kaia has a keen awareness of numbers. She can count in twos into the 20s, in 10s up to 100, and she is learning to count in fives. Kaia can count verbally up to 39 without any assistance, and up to 100 with little assistance. She is still learning to write numbers correctly, but can recognize numerals into the 20s. Kaia can accurately present numbers with objects. She can compare multiple groups of objects and knows that numbers can be counted forward and backwards. Kaia applies math in real-life situations, and correctly uses mathematical language. She uses ordinals from 1st through 5th and last. She is able to identify odd and even numbers.

Kaia can create, describe and extend complex patterns. She can successfully sort objects in several different ways. She is able to use language for sorting and classifying objects.

Kaia is able to identify, compare and describe attributes of real objects, for example, longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, bigger and smaller. She can correctly order objects according to size.

Kaia is able to solve number stories with concrete objects.

UNIT OF INQUIRY 1: StoriesThis unit of inquiry focused on how we express ourselves through stories. The central idea was that stories are used to inform and entertain. We followed these lines of inquiry: What is a story? What a different ways of telling a story? What makes story good? We delved into the problem and solution each story has. We also explored different kinds of music that enhance the storyline. We learned various folk tales and retold them using green screen technology. As a learning provocation, we took a trip to a local cinema and watched MegaMind, an animated movie. We successfully identified the various components of the story after viewing this movie. We connected this central idea with our former unit on natural cycles by looking at the cycles within stories, i.e. the beginning, middle and the end. We also revisited our daily routine cycles and retold these in various ways, including reenactment.Kaia loved listening to stories. She was a is a natural storyteller, whether in making up her own stories or in retelling stories about books and events. Kaia was able to recall intricate details about characters. She successfully identified the problems in stories and predicted the solution and the outcome without difficulty. Kaia liked to create stories through elaborate role play. When presented with different songs, she successfully picked out the best music to express the mood of a story.

UNIT OF INQUIRY 2: PlantsThis unit of inquiry focused on sharing the planet. The central idea was that plants are a life-sustaining resource for us and for other living things. We followed these lines of inquiry: What do plants provide for us and other living things? What is the structure of a plant? And how can we care for plants? We connected this central idea with our former unit on natural cycles by looking at the lifecycle of plants. We visited a plant nursery, where students looked at the different shapes and colors of leaves. We selected flowering plants to take home and extend our learning to our own gardens at home. We also purchased a lemon tree, which we took care of on our outdoor piazza, along with seeds that we planted and watered daily. During a visit to a science laboratory, we examined soil and water samples under microscopes. We also shared in various cooking experiences using different parts of plants. Kaia correctly identified the various functions of plants such as for eating, decoration as well as for protecting the soil. She independently reproduced the lifecycle of the sunflower plant. Kaia effortlessly articulated what plants needed in order to grow well. She especially showed interest in the not-so-obvious ways that we use plants for cooking, such as grinding wheat into flour to make pasta.

PHYSICAL EDUCATIONMr. Dimas Indrakumala

During the second semester, K1 students continued development through activities that included individual and group work in the following areas: locomotor movements such as running, skipping hopping, galloping, jumping, catching and throwing. We also focused on skill development using balls, bean bags, hula hoops as well as a parachute. In addition, we participated in a variety of athletic activities.

Kaia enjoyed all of the activities. She participated well and liked to play tag games. She is a good runner and she developed her motor skills. She is also able to work with a partner in cooperative activities. Overall a good year.

RELIGIONMs. Monica Dharmayanti

This semester, students learned about living and Buddhaʼs biography. They focused on the meaning and importance of good relationship between family members. They explored Prince Siddhartaʼs childhood and education. Kaia participated very well in all of the class activities. She always shared her good understanding about the meaning of family, the family tree, and the importance of having a good relationship with all of her family members. She recognised some good qualities that can be learnt from Prince Siddhartaʼs childhood. She is an inquirer and communicator. Overall, a very good semester. Well done!

MUSICMr. Frederick Guzman Estrada

This semester, students in K1 studied and played simple rhythm patterns using nontraditional notations. They also sung songs for special occasions and events. Usage of percussive instruments with variations of rhythm in simple and triple time were also studied.

Kaia enjoyed our music class. She sung happily in big or small groups and this helped develop her confidence. She loved playing the nontraditional notation patterns using the percussion instruments. Good job, Kaia!

DANCE AND DRAMAMs. Roberta Clemente

Kaia made good progress in Dance and Drama; she enjoyed responding to a wide range of dramatic ideas and was able to share her work and ideas with others. She has produced some expressive work. She listened, followed instructions and participated in all activities with enthusiasm. She worked cooperatively and responsibly in class. Great job, Kaia.

ARTMs. Beth Roberts

The K1 students followed the creative process to sketch images of an animal to transfer onto the printing block. The students developed the skills to make observations of their print and make enhancements by adding new lines to enrich the printed image. During the printmaking process the students demonstrated confidence, and purposeful self-evaluation to create their two coloured prints.

Kaia creatively sketched a cat on her printmaking block. During the printmaking process Kaia carefully enhanced her printmaking block by adding new lines. She confidently followed the printmaking process and produced excellent printed images of her cat.

Dear Kaia,

The two words that best describe your attitude this year would be commitment and cooperation. There is no doubt that you are committed to and fully engaged in your learning. You show perseverance, self-discipline and responsibility. As a cooperative student, you enjoy collaborating with your classmates and teachers, and you lead or follow as the situation demands.

You have been a very good role model to your classmates through the questions that you ask and the observations you make after reading stories, not only during English sessions, but also in Indonesian and Chinese lessons.

This year, you not only asked questions about the things we explored in class; you also asked many questions about spiritual matters. I sincerely hope that throughout life, you will continue to ask questions about life. I have no doubt that you will.

It has been a delight to have you in class, Kaia. I will continue following your blog and look forward to seeing where life takes you.
