Building A houSe oF unityACtS 7: 49 “… .whAt houSe will you Build me?”

Wandering along the water’s edge at Varsity Lakes during the visits of our wonderful guest speakers Ruth Ann Cannings and Ps Terry Appel, I was struck by the rhythm of the Dragon Boats. One boat, many people and many oars. With each move all oars hit the water at one time – SPLASH – and the boats glided forward with strength and purpose. Then the next move, and the next – many oars moving as one – THE UNITY FACTOR.

I was stirred to share with you as I did recently whilst ministering in the Philippines on Building a House of Unity. To illustrate the strength of unity we bought a bundle of BBQ sticks and tried to break them over my knee. It was not possible. I called on the Pastor and his wife to try and break them and they too were unable to break the bundle of sticks. Then we scattered the sticks across the floor and asked the leadership to gather them and try to break each stick individually. Of course they snapped with no effort at all. What an awesome picture of the church. (Eccl 4: 9 – 12)

This principle is so strong in the scriptures that we see Jesus praying to His Father in John 17: 20 – 25 for the unity of believers. (v23) “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” Unity has the power to show the world the love of God. Unity has the strength to propel the House of God forward to be effective in the generations.

Like we saw with the sticks, division causes brokenness and an independent spirit will bring weakness. However, in unity there is strength. Just like the sticks in a bundle and the oars of the Dragon Boat, unity will propel the church forward and the work of God to gain ground.

Let us then purpose to practice being a church of unity as instructed in Eph 4: 3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (v 12) ….. so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

May God strengthen you to go Above and Beyond in Unity

kuAlA lumpurWhilst in KL he presented a talk to a group of businessmen on living through this time of economic crisis entitled “A right turn for the downturn.” This three hour session covered many practical keys like “don’t quit”, “face the reality of the facts”, “count your blessings” and most of all “have faith”, to name but a few. It was a day of not only spiritual food but also fellowship over a great meal. During his time in KL, Ps. Kindah also ministered at the New Life Restoration Centre prior to being whisked off to the airport to fly to the Philippines.

JeSuS reignS miniStrieS, inC. mAnilA, philippineSThis is a dynamic church of approximately 3000 people with a bible school of about 1000 students. Jesus Reigns Inc have between 25 & 27 churches throughout the nations including one in Saudi Arabia, would you believe! This awesome ministry is such a positive connection. In support of that we are looking at sending over a group of young people in the future, as well as seeding some of our second hand books into their Bible College Library.

You can’t keep a good Guy down!! So Guy and his young team from both King’s Christian Centre and College will be heading off to the Philippines again towards the end of September this year to

bless and minister to people throughout the local villages of the Philippines. The team will go also to support Pastors Wayne and Rosei Downie who started a church planting ministry among the Wary people in 2004. Our team will be involved in church services, village outreach meetings, schools, preaching, dancing and singing and assisting in any way that they can. We at King’s are already anticipating the feedback from this exciting opportunity to minister above and beyond our borders.

Over time I have heard people pray “God give me a heart for missions”. That is not how it should be although it would be ok to ask God to show you His heart regarding missions.

Others have said to me: “O pastor Les God hasn’t called me to missions. I am called to something else”. That is not how it should be.

It is my belief that a heart for missions comes from your view of scripture. If it is the inerrant word of God (and it is) given to us to guide us in our behaviour and life then this high view of scripture means that you will grow a “heart for missions.”

For example:

Matthew 28:18“…All authority has been given to Me in heaven and onearth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

Mark 16:15“And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature”.

Luke 24:46“Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem”.

Acts 1:8“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

This does not mean that every believer has to be travelling to other countries all the time. It does mean that every believer should be involved in missions. Every member of the church can encourage those who are going - pray for them, support them financially and rejoice with them when the Kingdom is extended.

I do believe that one trip on a team can change your view and heart for missions.

Here at Kings we have an amazing missions programme. I would encourage you to be involved. Talk to one of the pastors as to how you can start. When you search the scriptures for God’s heart for people, you will find yourself developing the same heart which will cause you to be about our Father’s business every day.

“IMPACT” was certainly an appropriate name for our conferece this year. Our speakers Ruth ann Cannings from the UK and Anne Graham from Highway Christian Church were truly inspiring.

Some of the messages were: “Being a Contagious Christian”, “What to do to become a Difference Maker”, “Seasons (The prayers you pray in private will become a public testimony).” So much richness! If you missed the conference CDs can still be ordered.

Over the course of the weekend 200 women’s lives were touched and changed for good. The music, the worship, the dancers, every aspect flowed together. Thank you to all teams that gave of their hearts and time, your contribution made a difference to many. We are looking forward to Arise 2010. Watch this space...

eileen FournierA Story oF true CourAge, perSeverAnCe And BeAuty.

Faithful, enduring and a beautiful monument of one who has lived, loved and lost. Each Sunday morning at 10am our eyes scan the auditorium – end seat, second row from the front. She sits quietly, yet her presence is tangible, her strength and enthusiasm contagious. Such qualities come from being obedient and open to the leading of the Lord, from taking life’s knocks with courage and faith and holding on to the promise of the hope we have in Christ.

Eileen was born in 1916 in Yorkshire in England to loving, Christian parents. Three years after her birth World War 1 broke out, followed by the Great Depression. Although this time was filled with strikes and appalling conditions, her childhood memories are happy ones. Her father instilled such a positive attitude and she remembers having “no great depression in their house.” Her mother believed that “cleanliness was next to Godliness” and so the effects of the war and great depression didn’t have much affect on their household. The attitude of discipline and “children should be seen and not heard” might sound archaic in this day and age, but to them in that time of uncertainty it was the sound of absolute security.

In 1928 Eileen was confirmed in the Church of England and went on to be a Sunday school teacher and to enjoy a great social life within the church. Her father loved nature and they spent much time walking or enjoying the simple pleasure of reading together as a family– armchair adventures, as Eileen puts it!

At the age of 14 Eileen began an apprenticeship as a tailor and qualified when she was 17. At the age of 24 World War 2 had begun and Eileen joined the WAF’s as an ambulance driver. She was about to experience some adventures that no amount of reading could have prepared her for.

Her life was filled with drills and marching as well as the disciplines of having to wear army uniform consisting of a tin hat that was way too big for her and a great coat that reached her feet. She also had to keep her hair cut above the collar – tricky for someone with a short neck! It was a time of tragedy and struggle and also a time of team work and unity.

One night while driving to base in the pitch dark with no car lights so as not to draw enemy attention, a body and then a bicycle suddenly appeared on Eileen’s windscreen. She immediately stopped to find the buckled body of a postman and his pushbike. Another serviceman appeared to help – a miracle in itself – and called the police and ambulance. The man died in hospital shortly after. An inquest followed where Eileen was faced by the judge and the family of the deceased. Enough to intimidate the bravest of souls. The verdict was accidental death. Eileen sighed a sigh of relief until she was summoned by the coroner. He looked at her gravely and said “Young lady, I want you to forget this

Page 11: K Scene issue 9

day ever happened and not let it ruin the rest of your life.” Eileen will never forget the grace of this man and the freedom he gave her from guilt. A great picture of the love and grace of our Lord.

And so the following 4 years of Eileen’s life were bitter sweet. A contrast of camaraderie that comes from a time of enduring hardship as a team and tragedy that comes from the destruction of war.

It was during this time that Eileen was asked to be the driver of a new warrant officer. He was a quiet man, but very handsome. As his driver she came to know him quite well and realised that even then, he caused her to change her habits. She recalls thinking how odd that with the arrival of Warrant Office Max, her precious time of tea by the fire in the morning became drive Max to the base time. Little did she realise that this would be the man she would spend the rest of her life with. She chuckles at the thought with the comment “God works in mysterious ways!”

In 1944 the Australian forces were called home and D-Day was on the horizon. The WAF’s were taken for a flight over Europe and Germany to view the devastating effects of the war. Eileen recalls feeling a sense of such loss and waste rather than victory as she looked upon a flattened Europe.

Finally the time came to return to Yorkshire. It was at this joyous yet sad farewell, that the gallant and handsome Warrant Officer Max walked into the room and strode directly to Eileen and planted a kiss on her beautiful face with the words “I have waited so long to do this.” For Eileen that was the beginning of the rest of her life with the most loving and caring man in the world.

Eileen’s Max has since passed on. However Eileen continues to be a delight and inspiration to all who know her. Her love of the Lord and steadfast walking in His ways can be seen in her faith and determination. She is indeed a reflection of Christ in us, the hope of glory.

AddiCted to love: AddiCted to godwe’ve heArd the SCripture, “god iS love,” (1 John 4:8), But whAt doeS thAt ACtuAlly meAn?

The word love here is referring to agape love – an unconditional, sacrificial love that God showed us when He gave His only Son to die on the cross for our sins. This same sacrificial love – that love that God showed through the cross, is commanded of us in Matthew 22:37-40 when Jesus said to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… and love your neighbour as yourself.” That agape love displayed through the cross is the same love that God requires of us. Heavy stuff. The church is called to a greater love. Why? Because God IS love and it’s through love that we will see the kingdom of God expanded. When we reach out to someone, write an encouraging word or are simply there to lend a helping hand, we aren’t just “being a good person”; we’re showing the very essence of God…love! Don’t underestimate the power of love. The devil will try

to water down the significance of our generosity because he knows that it is through our love that God transforms lives. Because God is love. Here’s how the church has gone above and beyond in showing God to people… This year various Community Outreach Projects have impacted the lives of others. The most fruitful of these projects is the Golden Age team that visits residents every second Friday, bringing flowers, hand-made cookies and a warm smile. We’ve seen lonely hearts comforted, held many hands and have listened to their pearls of wisdom. The Golden Age nursing home team has built strong relationships with the staff and has bestowed worth and honour to the residents, being a witness to not only those at the home but to the resident’s families and friends. Recently we have been invited to become permanent volunteers, as they value our friendship and want to give us more opportunity to get involved with the home. The Tong Team (found every second Saturday morning down at Burleigh beach) has also attracted a cult following, giving out free pancakes and smiles to the beach goers. Having only started a few months ago, this team is building relationships with the locals and impressing the tourists. It’s a privilege to see the smiles on people’s faces when they see strangers being generous. It’s a fun and practical way to be the light in the community, bridging the gap between God and His people.

Not only does COPS have successful teams active throughout the week, but also monthly projects have been set up to impact and bless small communities.

Last week COPS held the first Adopt A Street project where we hit up a local street, lending a helping hand with whatever cleaning, maintenance or gardening jobs they needed done. After the odd jobs we held a free BBQ for the residents where we blessed some pensioners with food and connected neighbours with each other. A group of older ladies even carpooled to church last Sunday morning to check out this “Kings group” down the road. Praise God! We are seeing fruit and hearing good reports – all from stepping out and sharing the love. Other projects include Adopt a School (Mudgeeraba Creek State School) and blankets for the homeless.

COPS is a great way to get active in your faith and share the love of Christ with others, so if you’d like to be involved go to the information desk for a calendar or a ministry support flyer, or join the Community Outreach Projects group on facebook. Don’t undervalue the skills and resources you have, let’s use what has been given us to show God to our community!

Since we began ministering in aged care facilities late last year, 16 people have prayed to accept the Lord! Others may have done so during our services?

We conducted a funeral service (65+ attended), for the family of a Galleon Gardens resident, whom we met only days before he died. We explained our Lord’s conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. We led him, his wife and grandson to the Lord. With permission we used the same topic at the funeral service!

We now conduct monthly services in 3 aged care facilities, with members of the team visiting individual residents at each facility at other times. King’s College students are joining us to conduct great concerts in two of the facilities once each Term.

Members of our church family are also being visited as needed. If you want to get involved in imparting love and friendship upon these wonderful people please talk to Fred Grigg to find out more.

Just previous to these events I had collapsed while preaching a couple of times but now was experiencing headaches, arm, leg and chest pains and something like an emotional and physical breakdown.

I visited our local doctor in Otautau who told me I had high blood pressure and a rapid heart rate. He had taken it both sitting and standing. He said it was like a tidal wave and could cause an aneurism or heart attack leading to death.

I didn’t fully accept his diagnosis and wanted a second opinion. I knew there was a conference coming up in Christchurch at Living Springs and Kindah Greening was the speaker so I thought I would go and see a specialist Christian doctor in Christchurch and attend the conference while there.

I saw the doctor on the Monday, he took my blood pressure and told me the same story. He also had me sit and stand, he called Linda in and told her I had to quit what I was doing as I would be lucky to be alive by Christmas. He said the next time I stood up, I could die. He wanted to see me again before we returned home and made an appointment for Thursday.

We attended the first meeting of conference that night. The plan was to arrive late and leave

early since I found it difficult to cope with the crowd. Kindah preached then had an altar call. He specifically asked to pray for those who had lost someone or lost their job, things that caused stress. I turned to my wife and said, “you should go, you’ve lost your sister” and she said “you should go.” I knew I couldn’t stand for long and it seemed the altar was packed, I stood debating where to stand but needn’t have worried because Kindah came straight up to me and said: “You will stand again.” Linda was very excited about this and I asked her why? She said “because the doctor had just said the next time you stand you could die.”

We attended conference again on the Wednesday night where Kindah handed around anointing oil and told us to anoint any part of our bodies that needed healing. For me that was all of my body, the guy standing next to me didn’t think there would be any oil left after I poured it everywhere! Kindah prayed on mass and we went back to our accommodation and slept.

The next morning I woke up feeling good! I attended my doctor’s appointment; his nurse took my blood pressure three times and then went to find another machine. I went into the doctor and he took it again and said I had the reading of an 18yr old. He said, “God healed you didn’t he?” He told me to wait while he saw the last of his patients, then he took me aside and told me off for taking on other’s burdens and problems and told me not to do that any more.

our king’S “men 4 god” CAmp At mt. tAmBorine wAS A greAt SuCCeSS AS the poSitive FeedBACk ConFirmS.

The theme this year was “The Cause” and our aim was to help our men find their God-given cause in life and look at ways they can be actively involved in the life of King’s.

We were challenged to take ownership of our church with extended times of reflecting on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of our church.Friday night saw us “bending” under Ps. Craig’s guidance and opportunity was given for just hanging out and having fun, playing ping-pong, passing football competition, playing cards and general blokie things. On Saturday, Ps. Chris Mulhare spoke in two very challenging sessions on a subject that will remain in the “only for us to know” category. Suffice to say we were challenged to stand up and be counted as “King’s Men.” This culminated in many of the men, standing up and making a commitment to work together in helping to build King’s. We established a memorial in the form of us signing a Wallabies football jersey. This has been hung in the entrance of our church as a reminder of our covenant and pledge.

Since our camp we have had a men’s DVD and Supper night in the Summit Room which was attended by 38 men. We showed a DVD from the Hillsong Men’s conference which again challenged us to be the loving leaders, husbands and fathers of our families.

On Thursday 9 July we are meeting again for more encouragement and challenging instruction from Ps. T D Jakes on “secret men’s stuff” preceded of course by a good feed, starting at 6.30pm. We also have a men’s breakfast scheduled for Saturday 1 August with guest speaker Brigadier Jim Wallace, formerly the head of Australia’s SAS.

All in all our King’s men are on the march and we are determined to see King’s grow from strength to strength as we work shoulder to shoulder to fulfil God’s will for “OUR CHURCH”.

King’s has a great church family that meets each Sunday. In addition to this we have life groups that meet through the week. These smaller groups provide a way of connecting and developing closer friendships as well as allowing an opportunity for deeper sharing and discussion through social activities. In addition to this, small groups allow time to pray for one another and operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.Life groups and interest groups allow people to do life together which builds a strong, unified church. There is a small group for you and we invite you to come along and be a part of one. For all enquiries please call our church office on 5593 4233 or visit the info desk.

| king’S ChriStiAn CollegePartners in your child’s future

At King’s Christian College we believe that the school community should be an extension of your home. King’s provides an environment of safety, security, responsibility and love - foundations for a child’s healthy personal development. We work hard to foster your child’s unique sense of self based on his/her personal relationship with God. With this wisdom they learn to make the right decisions at school and beyond. Together, with the partnership between school and parents, we can provide an academic, social, physical and spiritual education that will extend far beyond your child’s years at school.
