Come, Holy Spirit, Come! On the first Sunday of June we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord. I can easily imagine what the disciples must have been thinking as Jesus tells them, “really, it is better for you that I go.” Thoughts such as, “are you sure?” or “you must be joking!” are just a couple of ideas that come to mind. Of course we get the opportunity to see what happens next in the story: Yes, Jesus ascends into heaven leaving his flock here on earth, but not for long. The Holy Spirit descends upon them at Pentecost filling them with virtue, boldness and all kinds of spiritual gifts. The blessings that flow from this indwelling of the Spirit are undeniable. The Church grew and spread throughout the world, pagan Rome was converted and saints were raised up through this grace. At times, it can be difficult to see how the Spirit is at work. Take an incident from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 16) for example: Paul and Silas are spreading the Gospel in Philippi and are being harassed by a woman who is possessed by an evil spirit. St. Paul commands the spirit to leave the woman and she is miraculously healed. However, this healing is the impetus for Paul and Silas to be imprisoned for “disturbing the city” and they are put in jail. Again, in a twist of fate, there is an earthquake that shook the jail’s foundations, leaving the prisoners free to escape through the open doors. It’s hard to imagine Paul and Silas not taking advantage of the opportunity, but they must have believed God did not want them to leave. When the jailer arrives and sees that they have not left, he is converted. He takes them out of the jail and they are set free. In a nutshell, they are wrongfully imprisoned, but through this injustice, the Spirit works a miracle of conversion of heart in the jailer and he and his whole household are baptized. Yes, such is the work of the Holy Spirit—making something out of nothing. And it is the same in my life and your life, too. Let us pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Church, and in our lives! For starters, here is an excerpt of the sequence that is proclaimed after the second reading but prior to the Gospel on Pentecost: Veni, Snacte Spiritus Come, Holy Spirit, come…You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; sweet refreshment here below; in our labor, rest most sweet; grateful coolness in the heat; solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, shine within these hearts of yours, and our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, nothing good in deed or thought, nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; on our dryness pour your dew; wash the stains of guilt away: bend the stubborn heart and will…On the faithful, who adore and confess you, evermore in your sevenfold gift descend; give them virtue's sure reward; give them your salvation, Lord; give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

Thank you for supporting St. John's of Little Canada!

What is Stewardship? Stewardship, quite simply, is recognizing that everything we have and everything we are is a gift from God and being grateful and generous with those gifts. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts that God has given us. Stewardship isn’t a process, or a campaign, or an accounting of our gifts. Rather, it is a lifestyle rooted in gratitude and generosity. The whole point of stewardship is to help each other strengthen our relationship with God and get to Heaven! The foundation of stewardship is prayer – talking and listening to God every day, throughout the day. Stewardship means putting complete trust in God, in all things. Stewardship means sharing all of our gifts, especially that one that means the most to you. By sharing all of our gifts, it helps us keep God first in everything, from putting other “gods” before God. It helps us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives. Of all the gifts that God gives us, the one he wants the most is our heart. He wants us to share out of love, not out of obligation. When we align our thoughts and actions with God’s plan and use our gifts in the way God intended, our lives become transformed with Joy, Love, Mercy and Peace!

Pastoral Visits Because of the Right to Privacy laws, Saint John’s Church is not notified of parishioners who are in the hospital, homebound, or have entered a health care facility. We must hear from you, a family member, or a friend if you wish to be visited by our pastor, pastoral minister or volunteer. Call Eric Cooley, pastoral minister, at 651-288-3268.

FAITH FORMATION

Prayer Warriors Needed! We need "prayer warriors" like you to pour God's grace onto our youth and leaders of Totus Tuus, Extreme Faith Camp, and Steubenville. Will you pray, fast, or make a sacrifice for the sake of our youth and leaders attending these events? If we don’t cover our children and youth in prayer, who will? Will you rise to the challenge? Every time you do, please let us know by filling out our short online forms so we can keep our youth informed about the blanket of protection you've placed over them! To let us know you’ve offered a prayer, go to: sjolc.org/summer-events and click on either Totus Tuus, Extreme Faith Camp, or Steubenville, and then fill out the forms. Thank you! Every prayer helps!

Youth Events (Gr 7-12) Totus Tuus: Currently in Grades 7-12. We will meet June 16- 20 from 6-9 PM (including dinner) Sunday through Thursday in the School Dining Room. Register beforehand if you can! Bring a friend too! Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference: Currently in grades 8-12. We will go to Rochester from July 12-14 for an awesome conference. Don’t miss out! No matter where you are on your “faith journey,” it will be the best weekend of your summer break, no doubt about it. Go to sjolc.org/summer-events to find out more and register!

Register for Totus Tuus!

June 16-21!!! Grades 1-6 in the morning, Monday -Friday. Grades 7-12 at night, Sunday – Thursday. Register at sjolc.org/summer-events. Totus Tuus (which means “Totally Yours”) is the Catholic version of Vacation Bible School for the younger kids, and five straight nights of youth group for teens! Your children will learn a lot, grow closer to God, and have a lot of fun too. The last day ends with a huge water-fight for the young ones, and a barbeque in the park for the teens.

Totus Tuus Potluck Supper

The entire parish is invited to the Totus Tuus program potluck supper on Wednesday, June 19 at 6 PM in the School Dining Room. Enjoy some food and listen to a song by our children and a presentation by our Totus Tuus missionaries! We need entrees and salads the most (everyone loves to bring dessert!). We’d also love your help setting up from 5:30-6:00 and cleaning up at 7 PM.

Reading Church Architecture 101

Church architecture should convey meaning and symbolism to tell a story. We can learn to “read” this story. Let’s start with the

basics: columns. Taken from ancient Greek and Roman architecture, columns are an easy way to indicate the importance of a place. We put “plain” and “simple” columns in the less important places, and we put the more ornate and decorative columns in the place of greater importance. The importance depends on: type (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian), decoration (fluting, leaves, etc…), height (tall vs short), circumference (wide vs narrow), material (marble vs granite vs concrete), integrity (one

piece vs multiple pieces), etc... In Churches, to indicate the importance of the main altar, we typically see a Corinthian column, highly decorated, very tall, very wide, and made out of one continuous section of marble. But near a door leading out of the Church, or some area of the building of lesser importance, you may see a Doric column, short and narrow, made of multiple sections of concrete or stone.
