To the members of the Wausau Elks Lodge 248,
As we watch what unveils at the Capitol, now is still a time to be cautious. I stress you not to
worry about when our lodge will re-open, but to turn your concern to your fellow lodge
members and seeing how they are working through this most difficult time. Let us turn our
focus as individuals to how we can support our community as members of the Elks because
that is what we do, each person needs to dig deep to see what they can do to make their
community better.
Take the time to reach out and to see how our most vulnerable members are doing... the lodge
will begin to reopen in stages starting on June 4, but until then we must worry about each
other. We must avoid a rush to reopen without following the CDC's guidelines for minimizing
the spread of COVID-19. Your board of directors has decided to reopen for the lodge meeting on June 4, but we ask
you to contact us via Facebook or by phone if you plan to attend so we can make the appropriate accommodations.
In addition, on June 4 we will be opening up the lower bar on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm to 9pm
until further notice. Lodge events are postponed at this time until safer conditions are established. The restaurant will
remain closed until further notice.
I just want to remind everyone that is essential that each member who has not yet paid their annual dues do so as soon
as possible to insure the lodge's existence. I want to thank the people who have already paid their dues, which has
allowed us to continue the great tradition as of one of the best lodges in the state of Wisconsin through this difficult
time, we cannot give up!
Please continue to check your monthly newsletter and the Elks Lodge 248 website for updates about future events.
I pledge to you my fidelity. Bruce Conard, Exalted Ruler

Several newsletter issues ago when I quoted the ancient Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting
times,” I had no idea how interesting they would get. As I write this, the Board of Directors has
discussed how to possibly open the Lodge, but I will let ER Bruce Conard inform you of those
conversations. While the Lodge remains closed, our daily activities continue. Chuck Berens and I
(actually Chuck) continue to record dues that trickle in, Beth Gorski continues to operate the Lodge
and the BOD meets virtually as it should. Given the economic situation in our nation with so many
people out of work, I hate to once again talk about money. Nevertheless, each day the news
chronicles the struggles of small businesses to survive. Although we are a private organization, we are
really a small business, dependent on our sources of revenue like any small business. Fortunately,
there are some positive notes to our economic picture. On the plus side, thanks to the generosity of
some of our members, the debt reduction drive has decreased our outstanding mortgage and line of
credit from $149,000 to $112,832. On the negative side, our mortgage and line of credit stands at
$112,832. At this time, with the Lodge being closed, member dues represent our only income.
Presently, 159 members have not paid dues, representing a loss of income of just over $23,000. Any
small business in the city will tell you that is a hard hit to take.
Be safe and be smart.

Our Lodge awards 9 scholarships each year to high school seniors to continue their education. These scholarships have been funded through the generosity of member donations and bequests. Our scholarship fund is low on funds and we would appreciate any donation that you can make. Please send your tax-deductible donation to the Lodge office with a notation “Scholarship Fund” on your check. Thank you for your support of this 3903 youth project, one of many charitable works of the Lodge.
