Fellow Members,
Wow I am impressed daily by the members of our Lodge, our members truly know that
the measure of a person is not in what is saved but rather what is given. I have witnessed
many members stepping up and doing things that we take for granted and I personally
want to Thank them all! This organization is not measured by the board’s activities
alone but rather the activities of all of the members that give that one moment of time
back. The power of large numbers of people giving back is immeasurable.
I would like to announce the hiring of a new addition to our invaluable staff, Dan
Loomis, has taken over our kitchen, with many years of experience we are proud to
announce that our menu will be changing and a number of our standbys are back. Watch for the changes to
the menu and stop down to give the food another try.
As we hit summer we are starting to look at the projects that will be done at the Lodge in July, we have a list of
many worthwhile projects, and we are looking for assistance on some of those projects. So if in the first week of
July you have some free time let us know if you’d be willing to give an hour, we could certainly do something
memorable.
June is again a busy month, from Flag Day, Kids Fishing, Concerts on the Square are starting, or stop on down
and visit with your fellow Elks and enjoy the patio. With the weather getting nicer, the days getting longer we
have the opportunity to enjoy and celebrate Brotherhood once again. As we serve the community we have
many openings for everyone to work and enjoy.
Flag Day is an event that we take great pride in and this year Karl has outdone himself, we look forward to
meeting you on the 400 block rain or shine at 5pm on June 14th

Happy Fathers Day Here’s to wishing everyone a Happy Fathers Day, good weather, enjoyable time with family and friends. Take time to remember the Great Dads we’ve lost too.
We are not as formal on Fathers Day as we are on some other holidays but it is just as important!
Hoping everyone has a great day, The Officers and staff of Wausau Elks Lodge #248

Please Bring Your Dues Up to Date! Your annual dues payment was due on or before April 1st.

It’s nice to see the warm weather is finally here (to stay). I am very excited for the summer season at our
lodge. With this being my 12th year as a member, I am blessed to have the opportunity to meet so many great people at our lodge that have inspired me to get more involved. For basically the first 9 years or so of being a
member, the only activities I took part in was the Fall Golf Outing (awesome), and the Art World food stand (Jackie Heitmann “volun-told” me that I would make a great “runner”). Herb Lessmiller and myself have tried to
fill Jackie’s shoes and tried something new last year by moving it downtown to be part of the Festival of Arts, it
was a learning experience and we have a good plan put together to make it better this year.
I look forward to great summer. The Flag Day ceremony on the 400 Block June 14th should be a wonderful ceremony, I hope everyone can attend. The summer picnic at Sylvan Hill (put on by the officers) August 7th, will
be another fun filled night and enjoy some great food made by our Exalted Ruler and Leading Knight (they should really be put on “Top Chefs” the Elks edition).
To wrap things up, I want all of our members to think of the Elks when their wondering what to do this summer even if you only have a couple of hours to spare or a whole day to volunteer your time. Believe me when
I say “You’ll get so much back, for just a little bit given!” The Elks Care, The Els Share!
Thanks for the memories, and for ones we can make!
Scott Waldhart

MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” SCHOLARSHIP RESULTS
Again it was my pleasure to distribute the Most Valuable Student award scholarship checks at the annual Youth Awards Banquet held on Wednesday, May 7 this year. The money these student scholars won through this lodge was just the first step in winning even more scholarship money for the local winners as their applications were sent on to the district and state levels. It was a testimony, indeed, to the quality of education that the teachers of this area offer the students, as the requirements for winning are nothing less than strenuous. I congratulate not only the students but also their teachers for producing such outstanding young citizens. The winners of 2014 Most Valuable Student Scholarships are as follows: First Place, boys ($1000): Andrew Koch, Merrill Senior HS First Place, girls ($1000): Jenni Geurink, D.C. Everest Senior HS Second Place, boys ($600): Cameron Rantanen-Day, Wayland Academy, Beaver Dam, WI Second Place, girls ($600): Erin Bardonner, Wausau West HS Third Place, boys ($400): Andrew Kratwell, D.C. Everest Senior HS Third Place, girls, ($400): Abigail Connolly, Newman Catholic HS Please remember that the money for the above scholarships is mostly raised locally, through a “special projects” fund that is fueled by our various fund raisers. The scholarship money was increased this year. A special thanks is due Mike Rebhahn and Mike Maher, who judged the applications at the local level and another thanks to Jim Dickenson who judges the applications at the district and state levels. NEWS OUT OF THE GUTTERS:
Bowling Stuff
CONCERNS Well, the 2013-2014 bowling season is over. As mentioned last month Bob’s Bowlers won the league championship and Bob Dustrude was the most improved bowler, mainly because he had the most room to improve. The awards meeting that followed the season ending banquet exposed a situation that concerns me greatly. Because the league down-sized to 4 member teams instead of 5 members there was not enough revenue to reward those who had perfect attendance. If one of the officers will just inform me who had perfect attendance I will give them their well-deserved cash award from our slush fund. I am further concerned because some league members have indicated that they will not be bowling next season. Are 3 member teams in our future, thus resulting in even lower revenues for the lodge and for the league awards? And is league disbandment in our future? One member stated that he will join a different bowling center because our lanes have an inconsistent oil pattern. It is my intention to go to another bowling center that has the same lane dressing machine that we have, find out what oil pattern they use, and then program our machine to lay down the same pattern as the other place. There’s no reason to abandon us, I’ll make sure we have a pattern that has been proven acceptable at another location instead of experimenting over and over again. I would be happier than a hog in slop if members reading this would consider joining the Monday night league. Give it a try next season. All you have to do is email me at [email protected] to inform me that you’d like to join the league and I’ll take it from there. I’ll find out what teams need more bowlers and connect you with those teams. The lodge has invested in an upgrade to our lane dressing machine, we now have a ramp to enable disabled people and kids to start a ball on its way to the pins, plus other enhancements to our lanes. Be a good Elk and have fun at the same time. Contact me, we need you. In case you didn’t notice in the previous paragraph, we now have a ramp so physically handicapped people and kids too small to throw a ball can merely position the ramp, place a ball at the top, give the ball a push and send it on its way. Keep that in mind if you want to “open bowl”. Question of the month: Years ago there used to be professional bowling teams. What was the most famous one? Answer: Budweiser Team. On March 12, 1958, long before technology changed the surfaces of bowling balls, Team Budweiser bowled a then record 3858 series, with Ray Bluth and Tom Hennessey each bowling a perfect 300 game. Other members consisted of Don Carter, Dick Weber, and Pat Patterson. Bob Dustrude, Ace Sports Reporter
So great he’s jealous of himself.” It’s not the lanes, it’s not the ball, I just suck
