Happy New Year Wausau Elks! Just because it is January doesn’t mean there is nothing going on! Swing Band, Pizza Night,

Trivia, Bowling Tournament, there is always something happening at the Wausau Elks! Look for information on all our Elk events in this bulletin.

When submitting an article for the bulletin, please send your info in Word format (.doc or .docx)

Using either Arial or Times New Roman font. Photos should be .jpeg files. This allows me to properly set up and format the bulletin pages for the printer.

It’s Hoop Shoot time. The Wausau Elks Hoop Shoot was held on Saturday December 12. Winners in each age

group were announced and move on to Oconto for the District Competition on January 9th. Good results there will bring them back to Wausau on February 13 for the Wis. Elks State

Championship. More news will follow. Thank you to all the volunteers lead by “Coach” Gene Musolf for continuing this traditional Elks event.

Chuck Berens, Rick Gesicki, Tom Gustafson, your Hoop Shoot staff.

STEAK NIGHTS ARE BACK! Better than ever!

Join us on Tuesday January 5 for our famous steak night. Choose a Steak, Chicken or Fish Entrée, plus soup, salad bar and dessert for

$14.95 per person. Dinner will be served 5:00 - 7:00. The Swing City Band will play from 7:30 - 9:30 for your listening and dancing enjoyment in our beautiful ballroom, something not seen for some time.

Put on your dancing shoes and join us. If you don’t dance, come, watch and enjoy some of the finest American music you ever heard.

Going out to dinner at the Elks? Don’t leave for the club without a neighbor, friend, coworker, cousin, uncle,

aunt, school buddy, niece, or anyone else you may contact during the week. In fact, invite everyone you know 6247 if you can. More friends, more fun.

It is not a Star Wars Bar and Restaurant, But the Elks is still a Star Bar and Restaurant. Orv Quamme, Lecturing Knight

Exalted Ruler

"The faults of our members we write upon the sand,

their virtues upon the tablets of love and memory."

I cannot think of a better way to start 2016 than remembering that we are all part of a brother and sisterhood that embraces this idea as a

cardinal principal of our order. If you are like me you probably make a resolution around the beginning of the new year. The normal resolutions are to eat better, lose weight, do something to better yourself. This year I resolve to live by the words above. But not only to forgive the faults of my fellow Elks but to try harder to look beyond the faults of everyone, and not harbor ill will towards anyone I know or meet. After all as Elks it is our reasonability to teach others the lessons that we have learned. Being an Elk means different things to different people. Some members join for the social aspect that the lodge offers. Some join because of the amazing food and beverages that we now offer. Others join because the want to give back to the community and help those who are in need. Whatever reason inspired you to join, the one fact remains consistent for all of us, we are all part of a fraternal brother and sisterhood who's sum is greater than it's parts. This year share what Elkdom means to you with your neighbors, friends, and family. Bring them down to the lodge for a burger or a fish fry and explain what the Elks do for the Wausau Area.

This month’s quote is from P.E.R. Kevin McCarthy " No one will ever be standing at the gates of Heaven saying I wish I volunteered less."

ATTENTION MEMBERS U.S. CONSTITUTION CONTEST

Could a graduating high school senior in your family use an extra $600 or more for college expenses next year? The Wausau Elks Lodge is sponsoring the Annual U.S. Constitution Contest again this year. This involves taking a one-hour written exam on the U.S. Constitution. The test will be given in the Lodge Room at 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 16, 2016. Three high school seniors from the Wausau area will divide $1,200 and the winner will advance to the State competition with a chance to win up to $2,900 additional. For further details seniors should contact the Guidance Department or Social Studies Department Chairperson at their high school or call Mike Rebhahn at 675-7248 (Home) or E-mail [email protected]. Mike Rebhahn, Contest Chairman

Don’t forget there is a special scholarship available to college bound high school seniors who are the children or grandchildren of dues-paying Elks. Have your child or grandchildren obtain an online application at www.elks.org/enfscholars. Scholarships (Legacy) are worth $4000 to the winners. Applications are judged on Knowledge, Charity, Community Service, Integrity. Financial need is not a factor. Applications must be submitted online on or before January 29, 2016, at 12:00 pm (Noon) CT.

The applications for the Most Valuable Student (MVS) scholarships have been received and as this is being

written they are being judged by Mike Maher and Mike Rebhahn. Hmm, Mike and Mike, reminds me of an

early morning sports program. Anyway, kudos are do the Mikes for the job of judging the applications is not

easy. The winning applications, 3 boys and 3 girls, will next be sent for district and state judging. Stay tuned.

Bob Dustrude, Scholarship Chairman

In MemoriamIn MemoriamIn MemoriamIn Memoriam

It’s the New Year and time for resolutions.

Most everyone makes them, at least I certainly do. Some resolutions become quite

obvious. For example, I notice each year at the gym that the place suddenly fills in

January with people I have never seen before. Other resolutions we keep to

ourselves, for a variety of reasons. Some resolutions are extremely ambitious,

sometimes to the point of being doomed to fail from the beginning. Others are so

simple that they are completed in daily routine. In his latest article on the Elks

website, GER Hicks suggests that our resolutions include becoming more active in

our lodges. What a terrific array of resolutions are offered here, from as difficult as

resolving to hold a lodge chair to as simple as reading carefully the bulletin each

month. All of us, no matter our level of involvement at the present time, can

participate. I know that, as secretary, there are a number of areas I need to

address. So as you develop your resolutions for the coming year, why not include

several that deal with your involvement in the Elks? It is the nature of the Elks that

everyone, especially you, would benefit.

RidgeRidgeRidgeRidge

Please keep in mind that the Elks have a beautiful Lodge of Sorrows Memorial Service that the Officers are

always willing to perform as part of any member’s funeral services. If you wish to include the Lodge of

Sorrows in services for your family’s Elk member, contact the Lodge

Office at 715.845.5602 or Mary Schneider at [email protected] to make the request.

ATTENTION: RETIRED MEMBERS The Lodge Office is looking for one or two

members to help us out on Friday mornings and an occasional Saturday

morning, counting money, reconciling the till from previous days sales and making bank deposits.

Of course we will train you. If interested, please contact Treasurer Bob Grieser at

715.803.4742

Membership Dues We are sure you don’t want to be dropped,

Your annual dues payment was due on or

LODGE LORE We know that our present building was constructed after a fire had destroyed the house on this site where the Lodge met. It was completed in the summer of 1924. But what about paying for it? With foresight, the members had established the Wausau Elks’ Home Corporation, chartered by the State of Wisconsin on November 5, 1917 to sell 300 shares at $50.00 each (over $900.00 today). The Articles of Incorporation stated “The sole object and purpose of this corporation is to purchase, lease, and hold real estate in the City of Wausau, Wisconsin, and erect and maintain thereon building or buildings for Club House purposes ... to be leased to the Wausau Lodge No. 248, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks ....” In 1922 it became evident that our building could be built, and the Articles of Incorporation were amended to provide for capital of $100,000.00 by raising the number of shares to 2,000. This was approved by the State of Wisconsin May 29, 1922. The debt of the Corporation upon completion of the building was approximately $70,000.00. The image shown here is one of the Stock Certificates purchased by member W.W. Albers, Jr. on June 12, 1922. He purchased two shares for $100.00, again over $1800.00 in today’s money! This Certificate can be seen in the “Way Back When” window in the lower lounge of our Lodge. We can all be grateful for the foresight, dedication, and generosity of our former members for the wonderful legacy of our beautiful Lodge building! The Mikes (Maher & Rebhahn, Lodge Historians)

NEWS OUT OF THE GUTTERS:

Bowling Stuff, Golf Too!

Well, at the time of this writing the bowling season is half over. After a slow start Bob’s Bowlers (that’s

my team) has inched their way up to lead the field. I was just cogitating on why my team is so

successful and the following thought occurred to me. My team consists of 3 brothers, each of whom is

capable of throwing 5 or more consecutive strikes at any time. The team further consists of their father,

and a father-in-law (me). I think having 3 brothers on the same team is remarkable. I’ve been (trying) to

bowl for 50 years and don’t recall any team having 3 brothers on it, much less being so productive.

On a recent Monday night I threw a rare, for me, pocket hit. My ball gravitates, like a moth to a flame, to

the Brooklyn side, aka Dustrude side. That pocket hit should have been a strike, alas, the 7 pin was left

standing. I faced the teams, took out my wallet, and offered to pay some money if they would just give

me credit for a strike. The guys refused my offer. I literally can’t buy a strike.

Thanks to a couple lane mechanics our machinery has been the most trouble free in recent memory.

Sure, there’s an occasional breakdown, but that’s true of every bowling center in town. The lane

mechanics involved are Bill Block from Day’s Bowl-A-Dome and Wayne Krueger, from DePere or

thereabouts. Thanks, Bill and Wayne.

Doing the splits: Scott Radant and Max Stella picked up some wide splits but I don’t know which pins

were involved. Scott and Max year after year are two of the best and most consistent bowlers in the

Monday night league, so it’s no surprise when they pick up difficult leaves.

Bob Dustrude, Ace Sports Reporter “So great he’s jealous of himself”

It’s not the lanes, it’s not the ball. I just suck.

Editor’s note, the Monday Men’s league is still in need of subs, especially in the upcoming winter months.

Keep open bowling in mind as you entertain family and friends this holiday season.
