YEAR BUILT: 1955TYPE OF REMODEL: Whole homeBEFORE: The studio is a fine example of architect

Frank Lloyd Wright’s later work with strong architectural presence. The systems and finishes in the iconic 1955 Usonian house were showing their age. The kitchen and baths were dark and inefficient, glass seals were failing, and the under-floor piping was outdated.

AFTER: Maintaining the spirit and integrity of the original design, the systems were updated to current standards. Kitchen and bath partitions were repositioned to improve functionality, LED lighting was added throughout, under-floor piping was replaced, and A/C was added. The goal was to preserve the home for the next 75 years.

MUST-SEE FEATURES: Updated kitchen and baths feature rift-cut oak cabinetry and woodwork scribed to stone. New windows throughout and glass-to-glass corners. An enlarged terrace, integrated paths, and new stone walls serve to extend the architecture into the landscape.

multi-leveled, 1935 Art Deco home was palpable. A desire to simplify, modernize, and create one-level living provided the direction for this whole house renovation.

AFTER: Unique lines penetrate this dynamic home built into the bluff above Cedar Lake. An innovative floorplan of white walls mixes with a multi-hued palette of cabinets, tiles, and living edge walnut and quartz tops. A free-standing bath and glass stair wall add touches that give the house a truly original feel.

MUST-SEE FEATURES: The dramatic exterior composition of white stucco, black windows, natural shiplap cedar, manganese brick, and standing seam metal soars above the hillside while reaching out to greet you. As you enter the foyer’s 6-foot-wide pivot door, you quickly realize you’ve never been in a home quite like this one.

transform it into a modern home while keeping all of the original design character. The builders were able to add 400 square feet, while maintaining the original aesthetic and incorporating it into the family’s lifestyle.

AFTER: David Lund Design and Julie Madge Interiors designed the space to take advantage of the secluded setting and added an abundance of windows to invite sunlight in from every angle. With the original home split between four levels, the team combined spaces to create better flow and private sleeping quarters for the parents.

MUST-SEE FEATURES: Don’t miss the stunning two-story mahogany wall paneling with brass in-lays—a real Art Deco design. The two-story living room is equally breathtaking with bright windows and the original stone fireplace. On the second floor, an open-air lounge is finished off with a wood herringbone floor.

AFTER: Removing the wall between the kitchen and entry opened up the space and allowed for a seating area. Updated cabinetry with more functional storage solutions and top-of-the-line appliances were also incorporated into the design. Outdated oak floors were refinished with a beautiful mocha stain.

clients wanted to reinvigorate and right-size their existing home to accommodate their myriad interests—cooking, music, cocktails, and entertaining.

AFTER: With the removal of several walls and flooring, the expanded kitchen transformed into the clients’ dream entertainment space with Viking oven, massive soapstone-topped island, prep sink, and coffee/cocktail bar. The project also included two reworked baths, a rec room turned home theater, and a gloomy porch converted into a bright dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows.

MUST-SEE FEATURES: The wood-fired pizza oven with a custom finished steel exterior is a clear favorite for making handmade pizzas with guests. And the beautiful three-season porch addition created a practical entertaining space to enjoy the outdoors in any weather.

had enough square footage for a young family, but not an efficient main living floorplan. A wall, varying floor heights, and posts closed in on the kitchen table, which was shoehorned next to a small island.

AFTER: AMEK’s challenge was to unify the 1,000-square-foot area to fit how today’s families live on a daily basis. The new design features a larger kitchen island with seating opening up to freely connect with the living room, all-season porch and dining room.

MUST-SEE FEATURES: The kitchen is now the main course for this remodeled Edina home with generous helpings of high-end finishes including Cambria countertops and custom cabinets with glass fronts and appliance panels. A beverage center with individualized temperature controls, built-in dining room buffet, and Jenn-Aire and Vent-a-Hood appliances fill out the menu.

YEAR BUILT: 1903TYPE OF REMODEL: Whole homeBEFORE: The owners loved this old house, but it was

full of challenges. Their bedroom and bath were in the basement, and the second floor had small bedrooms, but no bathroom. To top off the list of problems, the house also had a steep stairway, broken windows, worn and sagging floors, a dated kitchen, and too many walls.

AFTER: Brian Jones and his team at Jones Design Build created an efficient layout for this remodel. They moved the stairway, tore out a three-story brick chimney, and removed the attic. Two bedrooms and bathrooms now occupy the second floor. The updates also included new windows, finishes, and mechanical systems.

was in need of a full home makeover. Xpand, Inc. and its partners came in and transformed this outdated house by adding square footage to both the front and rear of the home.

AFTER: The small kitchen was moved from the street side to the lake side to increase its size and add a custom walk-in pantry. The team also took two bedrooms and a bathroom on the main floor and turned it into the master sui te, with a beautiful custom bathroom and a large walk-in closet. The project also included adding a new main floor laundry and luxurious powder bathroom, a custom wine room in the kitchen, a wet bar, and a vaulted front porch with wood ceiling and a reclaimed chandelier.

MUST-SEE FEATURES: A custom steel beam was installed on the staircase to create unobstructed site lines from the front door

to the scenic lake out back.
