Yo Wiksas!
Summer is here! Get your sunscreen & sunglasses ready!
As you all may have noticed, our Elders have been very active
with all sorts of fun activities! We have been gathering every
Monday as usual starting at 12pm for lunch. Thank you to all
the helpful staff, Matt our Community Health Nurse, Michelle
our foods & nutrition Coordinator, Chelsey Walkus our
Community Health Representative & Cathy Swain our outreach
worker. The Elder's love when our staff work together for them.
They also love it when staff & council join them for lunch
*hint, hint* Thanks Ernie Henderson, from council, for coming
in to join them last Monday. As well as Conrad & Dave, our
new Fisheries tech. It is so nice to see all the new faces. You
don't have to do anything. Just your presence means a lot to the
Elder's.
The Canoe Journeys is coming up fast. Conrad & Leslie have
been keeping the Elders up to date on their progress. Great
work!
We have two catering jobs coming up in July. Please note, if
you wish to come along on the trip to Kamloops for the Pow
wow, you MUST lend a helping hand it least three times.
Obviously we don't expect our eldest elder's to come down and
cook or what have you. If you are not able to yourself some
done, please send your son/daughter/niece/nephew/grandchild
on your behalf. I will be taking notes of who has been helping.
If you do not make an effort, then you will not be able to attend
the Pow wow with the Elders. It has been agreed upon.
Our funding Grant has been approved. I have not yet received
anything at this time. Please keep in mind, we signed a contract
with the Trust Committee when we first applied for a grant, that
the Elders would continue to fund raise and they would gladly
pass our grant proposals by. So just because we were approved,
does not mean our job is over. We still have to work for what
we want, right? :)
I have updated the Elder's List. I have 51 Elders as of today on
that list. We only have room for 30 of you to go on the trip in
August. So please, if you wish to come along, contact me asap!

TREATY NEWS:
The following article is a very important
announcement that will positively impact
the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw treaty
negotiations and all First Nations in Canada
– our statement that we have Aboriginal
title in our traditional territories has now
been confirmed by the highest court in
Canada.
Please read on…
First Nations Summit Celebrates
Supreme Court of Canada’s Declaration
of Tsilhqot’in Title
The First Nations Summit (FNS) celebrates with the Tsilhqot’in
people, and all other First Nations in Canada, on this historic
day as the Supreme Court of Canada has finally issued the
very first declaration of Aboriginal title in the unanimous SCC
decision in the William case released earlier today.
“We have waited a very long time for this day. First Nations
have been fighting on the land, in the boardrooms and in the
courts for countless years seeking the meaningful recognition
of our inherent rights to our lands, as guaranteed by the
Constitution of Canada”, stated Grand Chief Edward of the
FNS political executive. “The Tsilhqot’in people have
demonstrated great courage and resolve in advancing this
case for so many years and we thank them for that. We
celebrate with them today and honour them for their
tremendous perseverance.”
“The SCC has shown courage in issuing a declaration on
Tsilhqot’in title. We are pleased the Court did not succumb to
the fear-mongering advanced by the Provinces and industry
groups. Instead, the Court has given a solid, considered
decision based on the Constitution and precedent case law”,
added Cheryl Casimer, also from the FNS political executive.
“It’s a joyous day for Canada and for Indigenous peoples. The
SCC decision is a measure of justice and a great step forward
in reconciliation.”
The Tsilhqot’in began their journey 25 years ago. A whole
generation has grown up in this time. The William case, named
for Chief Roger William of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation, is one
of the most significant cases ever brought before the SCC.
After 339 days at trial, millions of dollars paid in legal fees, a
nearly 500-page trial decision and two appeals, the SCC has
finally given the final word by confirming that Aboriginal title is
real and that there is real meaning to the recognition and
protection of Aboriginal rights in section 35 of the Constitution
Act. The First Nations Summit was one of thirteen groups
intervening in support of the Tsilhqot'in in this important case.
“Now we can get on with the hard work of true reconciliation,”
stated Robert Phillips, political executive member of the First
Nations Summit. “The landmark decision confirms that
‘Governments are under a legal duty to negotiate in good faith’
with First Nations. The decision puts to rest at last the Crown’s
impoverished view that Aboriginal title only exists in small spots
and includes no substantive rights of jurisdiction. Now there is
truly a clearer path forward for the negotiation of fair, just and
equitable treaties and agreements in British Columbia.”
“First Nations have a desire to achieve reconciliation with the
Crown through honourable negotiations and partnerships. We
seek respectful and principled co-existence, where our
identities as pre-existing societies with land and governance
rights is respected in both law and practice. Respect for and
recognition of Indigenous human rights is fundamental to
achieve reconciliation. We believe there is a strong, principled
framework for engagement already set out in both Canadian
and international law. It is just a matter of getting on with it”,
concluded Chief John.
This article is a press release from the First Nations Summit.

Hemphill

Good Food Bag Recipes
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all are enjoying the food in the Good
Food Bag as well as the recipes!
This Good Food Bag’s recipes will focus on
alternative healthy ingredients and different
ways of cooking. A lot of people have restrictions
to their diet whether it be due to allergies,
sensitivities or health concerns so it’s handy to
find some alternatives to great dishes.
These recipes are a bit more prep-work than the
last ones but you can use a crock-pot to save time
and they are delicious!!
Let me know how you like the dessert…sadly I
am allergic to strawberries.
--
Michelle Beaulieu,
Food Security & Nurtition Coordinator
Main Dish: Zucchini Lasagna
Lasagna is a great dish to make as you can pack
in a lot of veggies, flavors and nutrients! You can
make the sauce ahead and even freeze it for
future meals or use your crock-pot to save time in
the evenings.
For pasta dishes, people with gluten intolerances
or sensitivities and people that can’t have a high
carbohydrate diet (some diabetics) due to their
high content of refined sugars just can’t or should
limit eating certain carbs. Substituting the pasta
with zucchini is a great way for everyone to enjoy
the dish.
While pasta (carbohydrates) is not necessarily
bad all the time and you don’t need to fully
eliminate it from your diet, choosing certain
carbohydrates are better for you than others
(whole wheat pastas over white). Remember a
diet too low or too high in anything is not good
for you. Moderation is key and switching pasta
for a “veggie noodle” every once in a while is a
fun way to add balance to your eating routines.
Ingredients for the lasagna:
Zucchini thinly sliced lengthwise (one
zucchini should be sliced into 6-8 long
pieces).
3 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tbsp Italian seasoning
a handful of fresh parsley
2 bay leaves
5-6 mushrooms, sliced
1 onion, chopped
2 carrots, grated
spinach, chopped
4 med-lg tomatoes, chopped small
Mozzarella cheese, grated
Cooked ground meat (beef, chicken,
turkey or wild game), any type will work
nicely.
To prepare:
1. Slice the zucchini lengthwise, thinly.
Place slices in a strainer and sprinkle salt
PAGE 14 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 06/27/2014
over the slices. Let sit in a sink or over a
bowl for at least 1hr then rinse, pat dry
and set aside.
*The salt will extract water out of the
zucchini or else your lasagna will be very
soupy. So the longer you let sit, the better.
2. Cook meat and set aside, straining the
extra fat from the cooked meat.
3. Add chopped tomato, onion, carrot, herbs,
garlic, cooked meat, bay leaf and other
veggies like peppers to a pot and let
simmer (med-low / med heat), stirring
often until cooked through ~1hr.
4. Pour a thin layer of sauce in a deep
baking dish, top with zucchini (see
picture), pour another layer of sauce,
place spinach as a layer, top with
zucchini, last layer of sauce and then top
with cheese.
5. Bake at 350oF for 1hr.
6. Take lasagna out and let sit for 15 min so
the sauce sets (it won’t be as runny and
will be easier to cut).
Side Dish: Broccoli Salad
The beloved broccoli salad, full of good vitamins
from the vegetables but usually overrun with a
processed dressing like mayonnaise. Using
yogurt the dressing takes on a fresh, sweet and
zesty taste that hopefully everyone will enjoy.
For people who have allergies to nuts, you can
substitute seeds (pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds
etc). Seeds and nuts provide good fats that
nurture our bodies unlike processed fats such as
mayonnaise.
The dried fruits can be substituted for fresh
berries from the wild or something like cut up
grapes also goes well.
Ingredients for the salad:
1 crown broccoli, chopped into small
pieces.
¼ red onion, thinly sliced
dried berries (blueberries, cranberries, or
currants etc)
Fresh fruit such as grapes (optional)
Walnuts, Almonds or Pecans (substitute
for nuts – pumpkin or sunflower seeds),
lightly toasted.
Ingredients for the dressing:
2/3 cup plain organic plain yogurt
Zest of 1/2 lemon (optional)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1-2 tablespoons honey
To prepare:
1. Toast the nuts or seeds by putting them in
a pan on low heat, stirring often until
they slightly brown. Toasting the
nuts/seeds on high heat significantly
reduces the quality of their nutrition not
to mention makes them very quick to
burn.
2. Chop broccoli including stem into small
pieces and put in a bowl.
*If you have a hard time chewing broccoli you
can steam it until just cooked (still a bit
crunchy but softer). Let it cool completely,
and then chop into small pieces.
3. Chop red onion into thin slices,
PAGE 15 GWA’SALA-’NAKWAXDA’XW NATIONS YO! NEWS 06/27/2014
add to broccoli.
3. In a separate smaller bowl combine
yogurt, lemon juice, lemon zest (optional)
and honey. This dressing is best blended
with a blender or it may take a bit to mix
in the honey.
*if you don’t have a lemon zester you can
always use the smaller side of a cheese
grater. Lemon zest is optional for the
dressing but adds a nice zing!
Healthy Dessert or Snack:
Strawberries in Almond Milk
Sticking with the theme of alternate ingredients,
here’s a substitute for milk products as some
people who are lactose intolerant can’t have milk.
When shopping at the grocery store, choose
almond milk that is preferably organic with no
added sugars in the ingredients.
Honey is also a fantastic substitute for highly
refined sugars, which are carbohydrates (white
sugar, corn syrups, brown sugar, fructose etc).
Refined sugars have proven negative effects on
the body such as raising cholesterol levels,
contributing to insulin resistance leading to
diabetes, slowing down your metabolism and
many more. No need to get scared or
overwhelmed with this as learning to balance
your diet can be fun and tasty!! Remember while
honey and fresh berries has lots of health
benefits such as helping boost your immune
system, they still contain sugar (healthier
option), so moderation is key, especially for
diabetics.
Ingredients:
Strawberries, stemmed and sliced.
Honey
Almond milk
Vanilla extract
Fresh Cherries, pitted and cut in half
(optional)
To prepare:
1. Stem and slice strawberries, place in
bowl. Include fresh cherries or other
berries if you like.
2. Pour desired amount of almond milk
over berries.
3. Add ¼ tsp of vanilla to the bowl and
mix.
4. Drizzle ½ tbsp. (or less) of honey over
the berries and enjoy the amazing taste!
