Yo wiksas.

I hope all is well with you and yours. As you all

may already know, I was off for two whole weeks

and just returned back to work on Monday March

30. This was has been short but sweet.

There has been only one Elder showing up to

walking club. I do hope to see more of you down

here using your exercise machines. After all, that's

what they are here for.

Elder's day luncheon went very well today. We had

18 elders show up, as well as the Band manager,

one council rep, a few staff & community members.

Thanks to Colleen Hemphill and the Elder's Council

for putting together such an amazing meal. A big

round of applause to Cathy Swain & Betty for their

delicious pies. Everything was wonderful!

At this meeting that took place April 1, 2015, the

Elders did a vote on where they would like to go for

their annual trip this year. By a unanimous vote, the

Elder's will be attending the Annual Elder's

Gathering in Victoria July 7, 8 & 9. We will be

leaving Monday July 6 at 9am. We will return

Friday July 10th around 4pm. We will travel by bus

and the Elder's Van to this gathering.

Fundraising will continue for this years trip. If you

would like to come along, you are required to help

with fundraisers.

Weekly activities are as follows:

Tuesdays: Walking club at 1pm Elder's Center. We

will use the gym equipment.

Wednesdays: Elder's Day. 10am Cooking begins.

On the menu for next week~ Y'usa, biscuits, herring

eggs, seaweed, & Jello.

STAFF & COUNCIL MEMBERS ARE MORE

THAN WELCOME TO COME TO ELDER'S

LUNCHEONS! A great way to introduce yourself

to the G&N Elders and update them or just visit

them :)

Friday 10th: 12pm Elder's Council meeting, Good

Food Bag Day! Pick up between 1 & 4pm at the

Elder's Center, except for Elder's bags will be

delivered if you purchased one.

I will be away Thursday April 2 on OT.

Have a great weekend & Happy Easter everyone!

An update on Treaty Negotiations: Family Meetings

We are about ready to hold another Family Meeting on April 2. This Thursday, we will have had five

family meetings, three since the November 27, held at the Wakas hall when the governments made their

first offer.

The sole purpose of the Family Meetings are to help GN members gain a better understanding of the

Treaty Process including the 6 stages of negotiations. What is the Agreement In Principle, the voting and

ratification procedures, status, the Indian Act and taxation? Members bring their questions about treaty

and ask about elections, governance, child and family services as well as education issues. Community

members want to know what could be lost or gained under Treaty.

Each meeting lasts around three hours and includes a dinner, child minding and door prizes. The last

three meetings have been held at the Charlie Family Meeting Place. We are very grateful to have been

allowed to have the meetings in the Charlie Family Meeting Place. It has been good to meet as a family

unit, it seems that members feel more comfortable to speak out on issues of concern and ask questions

when surrounded by their own families. Children are provided child minding services as well as dinner at

the Health and Family Services Building. We invite family members to take on the various tasks to

support the meetings, such as minute taking, catering and child minding. Turnout has been very good

with numbers ranging between 25 to 35 people to each meeting.

It is planned that we will continue to hold meetings with all family and family heads. Once we have met

with each family we will go back and start the round of meetings again. Often members leave with more

questions than they arrived with. It is important that we continue to help promote the understandings

about Treaty. Members need to be made aware of what change could come about. What are the matters

of concern, what will improve for our people and community?

It has been good for me to get out to talk to you folks ‘one on one’ about the current issues and prospects

for the future of our community. It is strong and respectful dialogue that takes place. It has been an honor

to do this work with you as we strive to find ways to work together to make a better future for our

children and their children for generations to come.

Colleen Hemphill

To Community Members:

Just a little update on what I have been doing.

In February, much of my time was devoted to the annual TB testing. We tested over 100 adults and children.

Nash, from TB Control, was quite happy with the turn out. Tuberculosis is a bacteria that can affect the

kidneys, bone, brain, spinal cord, lymph nodes, lungs (most common) or anywhere in your body. TB can be

transmitted when an infected person coughs, laughs, or sings and droplets from their mouths are released into

the air. TB germs may be spread when someone else breathes in these droplets. Early detection and

treatment of TB prevents it from spreading to other people. When the immune system can’t keep the TB

bacteria asleep any longer it becomes TB disease. Some people may have the TB Infection meaning that they

have the TB germ but it is asleep in their body. This infection may develop into the disease in a few months or

a few years or, it may never develop into the disease.

Some symptoms of TB:

Night sweats Coughing two or more weeks Weight loss Fever Loss of appetite Fatigue

Of course, only medical professionals can determine if you have the disease or not and that is why TB testing

is important to do every year.

Dr, Reynolds specializes in diabetes and anything to do with the glands. He has been to our office two times

now and has seen some community members. If you have diabetes or glandular problems and would like to

talk to him, he will be back in our office on Monday, May 4, 2015 morning.

We held our Teleopthalmology Clinic on March 19 and 9 clients were called and 7 made their appointments.

This is a great success! In previous visits, the teleopthalmologists from ITHA, accepted anyone and everyone

but their guidelines have changed and now, can only see those clients that have diabetes or prediabetes.

Besides them checking your eyes for any damages done by diabetes, they also check how your blood sugars

have been doing in the past few months via the A1C testing. They would like to see everyone who has

diabetes but, if they can’t then they hope those people are seeing someone to monitor their eyes because

diabetes can cause blindness if sugars are frequently out of control. They will be back in September.

I have also been inputting all the names into our database. There were a lot of names so it took up a lot of my

time.

Finally, I have taken some elders to Aquafit. What is Aquafit? It is exercise done in the swimming pool. You

don’t need to know how to swim as the exercises take place in the shallow end of the pool. It is a great form

of exercising as they work everything on your body from your arms to your legs and your cardio (breathing)

and you won’t feel the pressure that you might if you did these exercises on solid ground. Note that people of

all sizes attend Aquafit and the ladies are very friendly.

Call out list

Hello G-N Community!

How it works

Go the GN office to fill out the Form. The GN office passes the information to the interested member in

the Port Hardy area who are on the call out list. This is for Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw members only.

Friendly reminder you do not have to contact me in any way because I have all you information all you

have to do is wait for a call.

First on, first served in rotation

The job call-out list works on a first come, first served basis. When job notices arrive at the office, we

match the job to people interested in that type of work. You will be called in order your name was added

to the call out list. Once you’ve been called out, the next job posting goes to the next interested person on

the list. When we reach the bottom of the list we start at the top again and your turn will come around

again. So it is a rotating list, everyone on the list will be called in turn.

We keep track of when and how many times we try to contact you. If we cannot contact you using the

information you provided or you do not respond in a reasonable time, we need to move onto the next

person because the employer will go elsewhere to fill the position.

Improving your chances

Keep your information up to date especially if your contact information changes. If we can’t contact

you we have to move onto the next person on the list as employer will look elsewhere for workers.

If you receive notice of work and do not want to or unable to work, please let me know and we will

move onto the next person.

Tell me if you are no longer interested in more, it will save calling you, your name can be put back on the

list at a later time

REMINDER, IF I PHONE YOU AND THERE IS NO ANSWER THEN I WILL HAVE TO KEEP MOVING

DOWN THE LIST, BECAUSE SOMETIMES WHEN I GET ASKED TO FIND A WORKER THEY WILL

NEED ONE RIGHT AWAY.

My apologies if you missed out, but honestly there will be more work coming up and I'm doing the best I can to

get to you all, but really need you to come and give me the right numbers to reach you at. I don't know what

jobs are coming up I pretty much wait until I get asked to find someone. You can even phone the band office

and give me a right number.

Thank you all for your understanding
