FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Today on this Father's Day, over 300 of us American Baptist Pastors and other clergy person in the DMV area will all preach from the 23rd Psalm. We are mindful that not all have pleasant memories but we are giving God praise for The Lord being our heavenly Father!

I would like to share the following of both my thoughts mingled with some online inspiration. Father-love is irreplaceable. Whether we’re celebrating our dads, stepdads, grandads, God-dads, brothers, sons, uncles or other father figures in our lives, these men (we) need to hear what a difference their (our) love makes. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 reminds us to “encourage one another and build each other up,” and Father’s Day is a chance for us to do just that. Lift our fathers and special men up; celebrate their unique calling; remind them how much they’re appreciated every single day. It is also a time to remember those men that have made an impact in our lives but are no longer with us. Even outside of Father’s Day, I am often taken back to words from and moments with my own Father, the late Deacon John Henry Davis. He was a man of faith, a man of inspiration, a man of family….and that is the legacy I hope I am carrying on and passing down to my sons and grandsons. Men, what legacy are YOU leaving?

Our final Word of the Week is simple: PRAY. This is certainly a PRAYing time in our Church, our City, our State, our society, our culture, and our world. When we PRAY, we talk to God. Yes, it’s that simple. We open our hearts, our minds, our spirits and we have a conversation with Christ. To have this conversation….to PRAY….also means to listen. To hear from God as well. We have shared a lot of WOW Words during this time: HOPE, LOVE, GRATITUDE, DISCIPLE, SERVING/GIVING, PEACE, BELIEVE, TRUST, AND PRAY. We hope and PRAY that these words have blessed you and meant something to each of us. Continue to PRAY for one another, for ourselves, for our country, for our world, for our culture, for our Church.

Thank you everyone in the First Calvary Family, for your calls, texts, Facebook messages, calls, PRAYers and thoughts for Mrs. Davis, Pastor and our entire family as we grieve the loss of our Matriarch, “Mother-in-Love”, Sister Cecelia Isham-Hayes. She was a part of our First Calvary Family from the very beginning of our time here, and I know many of you remember her visits to Durham and First Calvary. Thank you for your loving support and we ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers in the coming days and months. On next Sunday we will celebrate our youth and graduates. We once again congratulate our Graduates and all students on a great, though certainly challenging,

school year. We hope that you, along with the teachers and administrators, will have a safe, blessed summer....and that you will get ready for another year of hard work and blessings. Remember, “Because God Matters, You Matter” and we are looking for you to make a definitive difference for the Cause of Christ. Especially now, in our current trying social and health times, we need to be definitively dedicated to showing love and care to one another and uplifting each other, especially our youth. Have the difficult conversations with them, answer their questions, get emotional (but not ragingly emotional), and know that we ALL MATTER….because we are all God’s children….and He will keep us safe and well. Unfortunately, our Official Leadership Team has voted not to gather back to Worship in person on July 5th, but we will continue streaming the ONE SERVICE at 9:30 a.m. There is a team of volunteers who will determine what is best for worshipers in the coming weeks. Remember that we are excited about our Children and Youth…we are excited about our Graduates…we are excited about our Fathers…and we are AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!

THE DEACON’S MESSAGE

We should view the world through the eyes of Christ. Since we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He has entered our hearts and minds. Therefore, we should be concerned about the things that concern Him. We should live a life that matters by pursuing the goals set forth by His father, God. Colossians 3:1-2, The Message reminds us to look at things from the perspective of Christ. “So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.” If you find you have a distorted view of life, look through the eyes of Christ and watch everything fall into perspective.

Biblical Fathers Adam—The First Man As the first man and first human father, Adam had no example to follow except for God's. Lessons to Learn From Adam

God is looking for fathers who freely choose to obey him and submit to his love.

Fathers with integrity live in the knowledge that nothing is hidden from God's sight.

Instead of blaming others, godly fathers take responsibility for their own failures and shortcomings.

Noah—A Righteous Man Noah stands out among fathers in the Bible as a man who clung to God in spite of the wickedness all around him. What could be more relevant today? Noah was far from perfect, but he was humble and protective of his family. He bravely carried out the task God assigned to him. Modern fathers may often feel they are in a thankless role, but God is always pleased by their devotion. Lessons to Learn From Noah

God promises to bless and protect those who faithfully follow and obey him.

Obedience is not a sprint but a marathon. It means a lifetime of faithful devotion.

Even the most faithful fathers have weaknesses and can fall into sin.

Abraham—Father of the Jewish Nation What could be more frightening than being the father of an entire nation? That was the mission God gave Abraham. He was a leader of tremendous faith, passing one of the most difficult tests God ever gave a man: offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice. Abraham embodied qualities that any father would be wise to develop. Lessons to Learn From Abraham

God wants to use us, in spite of our shortcomings. He will even rescue and support us through our foolish mistakes.

God's purposes and plans are revealed in phases over a lifetime of obedience.

Trusting God is a wise decision. God wants us to trust him so we will benefit from

his blessings. Fighting against God is a losing battle. We often worry about missing God's will for our

life, but God works with our mistakes and bad decisions.

Moses—Giver of the Law Moses was the father of two sons, Gershom and Eliezer, and he also served as a father figure to the entire Hebrew people as they escaped from slavery in Egypt. He loved them and helped discipline and provide for them on their 40-year journey to the Promised Land. At times Moses seemed to be a larger-than-life character,

but he was only a man. He shows today's fathers that overwhelming tasks can be achieved when we stay close to God. Lessons to Learn From Moses

With God all things are possible. Sometimes we must delegate to be a good

leader. God desires intimate fellowship with every

believer. We all need a Savior.

King David—A Man After God’s Own Heart One of the great stories of struggle in the Bible concerns David, who trusted God to help him defeat the giant Goliath and put his faith in God as he was on the run from King Saul. David sinned greatly, but he repented and found forgiveness. His son Solomon went on to become one of Israel's greatest kings. Lessons to Learn From David

Honest self-examination is necessary to recognize our own sin.

God wants our whole hearts. We cannot hide our sins from God. Sins have consequences. The Lord is always there for us.

Joseph—Earthly Father of Jesus Surely one of the most underrated fathers in the Bible was Joseph, the foster father of Jesus Christ. He went through great difficulties to protect his wife Mary and their baby, then saw to Jesus' education and needs as he was growing up. Joseph taught Jesus the carpentry trade.
