Rising Cedar GardeningRecently our Rising Cedar residentshad the opportunity to plant their firstgarden as a collective community.Residents utilized a section in theHealing Garden to plant sunflowers, pansies, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, peppers, jalapeños, and onions. Wecan't wait to see how it growsthroughout the summer!

New Mental Health Workforce InitiativeRecently Touchstone applied for a Minnesota HealthForce grant focusedon development of new programming to better serve older adults withmental illness. Touchstone Mental Health, together with Care Providers ofMinnesota and Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC),proposed a partnership to collaboratively develop and implement coreevidence-based training and curriculum for health care staff and clinicalnursing students. The project was found to be "compelling, innovative, and worthwhile" by the review committee, and so the project wasawarded funding!

The project will impact individuals at the local and state level to expandand strengthen the mental health workforce and care of seniors withmental health challenges. All Touchstone staff will have the opportunityto be trained by the project trainers, and impact our direct practice workas well. Current statistics indicate the number of Minnesotans over theage of 60 will double between the years 2005 - 2030, so time is of theessence in order to best meet growing needs.

Wellness SpotlightPreventing Heat-Related IllnessThe arrival of summer and warm temperatures increases the chances ofheat-related illnesses. Heat-related deaths account for an average of 618

deaths each year.1 Individuals with a mental illness, infants and youngchildren, people age 65 and older, and those with physical illness are atgreater risk of suffering a heat-related illness.

Prevention is the best defense. Below are heat-related prevention tips2:

Take a cool shower or bath to cool off.Don't drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugaras these actually cause you to lose more body fluid.Avoid very cold drinks as they may cause stomach cramps whenthe temperature is very high.Rest often in shady, covered areas.Wear light weight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.Drink more liquids (non-alcoholic) regardless of your activity level.Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctorgenerally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on waterpills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat andsunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
