Letters Recent letters to the Editor concerning the removal of the Litter Free entrance signs have omitted to mention an important point. Those signs appear to have been removed at night in an illegal and criminal manner. This sets a very dangerous precedent. What security does any new signage have when it would take only a single person with an opposite view to go out at night and remove it? As to the legality of the original Litter Free signs they were erected by Tidy Towns members in daylight and in full view of the community. Verbal approval was sought from the Shire of Manjimup before any signs from Keep Australia Beautiful were put in place. And these include the Navman People’s Choice Award, The Clean Beaches Award, also the Regional and State Titles. Walpole is currently seen as an ambassador for Keep Australia Beautiful and litter free plays an important role in this sponsorship. Damage to or the removal of objects from Shire land is both illegal and criminal and should not be condoned or excused by any individual, group or business. - Michael Filby, Walpole resident.

Submitted by Claire Roocke & William Roocke On the 2nd July, six Walpolians arrived at the Royal Perth Yacht Club to participate in a week long Dinghy Instructor course. Even after busy weeks before, with Country Week and work before hand, we all arrived on that Saturday morning ready to learn. Maree Pickett, Shannon Wrigley, Monty Edmonds, and Edward, Claire and William Roocke were part of the twenty people who braved the cold Perth winter days that week. The six joined others from Exmouth, Perth and surrounding areas. The week would consist of Tackers Induction, Dinghy Instructor introduction, Skippers Ticket qualifications, Powerboat handling, Safety boat handling and Senior First Aid qualifications. Split into two groups everyone would complete the majority of these tasks. We were lucky enough to have some of the highest quality instructors to help us get all of these qualifications in just seven days. The week was filled with new challenges and late nights as we tried to finish the bookwork we had been given. One of the tasks of the Dinghy Instructors module was we were required to complete and present a session plan to our fellow participants. By far the most enjoyable part of the week was the power boating led by Dean Caple and Grant Hunt. We spent almost all the day out on the water doing high speed figure of eights, coming alongside a mooring and much more. The week was capped off with a flare demo and a safety boating course. We all wish to thank Dean Caple, from Yachting WA, Royal Perth Yacht Club, Walpole Yacht Club, Matilda Bay Sailing Club and the Pelican Point Sea Scouts for their support of this programme. Are you keen to learn to sail? Keep an eye out for Walpole Yacht Club’s ‘Learn to Sail’ programme, beginning in October.

LOOKING BACK… on the Peaceful Bay settlement submitted by Molly Smith As far back as the early days of the group settlement districts, Peaceful Bay was a popular destination. Any excuse for a picnic saw groups of families tackle the rough tracks down to the beach by horse and cart to enjoy a day free from farming chores.

Its popularity never waned and in January 1957, the Denmark Shire opened up 50 blocks for application in the A class reserve. This move met with great interest and the lots were quickly taken up. It wasn't long before building activity was at a premium and cottages were taking shape. More blocks have been released over the intervening years and in the five avenues of Peaceful Bay around 250 holiday homes have been constructed. One of the conditions set down for the first fifty blocks was that no more than 750 pounds was to be spent on the building. As holiday makers increased, the Shire provided and leased the store and the caravan park. “The Bay” as it is often referred to has grown in popularity and there are now many more amenities thanks to the foresight of the Peaceful Bay Progress Association. Dating back to the 1800s, Peaceful Bay was part of a large coastal grazing strip from Nornalup to Denmark used by farmers in the Cranbrook and Warren districts as summer grazing for their stock. This delightful coastal spot has a special appeal for all age groups.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) will get two new and two replacement aircraft, and a new Broome base as part of a $67.39 million Liberal National Government Royalties for Regions investment in the Country Patient Transport Project announced today.

Health Minister John Day said the RFDS provided a vital health link for people living in remote areas of Western Australia and the Broome base and two new aircraft would allow it to continue that service.

“Transporting more than 9,000 patients a year, the RFDS provides a vital health link for people living in remote areas of WA and the recently opened Broome base and two new aircraft will help it meet growing demand,” Mr Day said.

“The RFDS is contracted by the WA Country Health Service (WACHS) to provide inter-hospital transfers for regional West Australians; a service which is critical for access to emergency care for rural patients.

“Over the past six years, transfers have grown by about five per cent a year and performance targets have improved despite increasing pressures on the service.”

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said enhancing the delivery of sustainable services was vital to meet current and future needs of regional communities.

“Under this initiative, $8 million will go to the WA Country Health Service supporting ambulance services in Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek,” Mr Redman said.

“This funding will also allow the St John Ambulance community paramedic program to continue recruiting and training volunteers at 22 centres across regional WA.”

The Patient Assistance Travel Scheme (PATS) will also receive $32.23 million to meet the treatment needs of eligible patients who need to travel away from home for treatment.

We don’t get out and socialise as much and this limits contact with family and friends which can lead to feelings of isolation. We spend less time in nature doing activities we love and this can leave us feeling a little flat and bored. Then to top it all we get almost no Vitamin D through sun exposure here in Walpole unless we actively seek it out. These and many other physiological reasons can make it hard to maintain your mood in the winter months. In the first of my monthly column on mental health and wellness I want to discuss Self-Care. Each month I will highlight a new Value for you to try on. That means you hold the value in mind as you go about your day and if you have the opportunity to express that value in a behaviour or deed you chose to do that. In this way we gradually build up behaviours that are useful to us and make life more enjoyable. Consider self-care or “to take care of, or act caringly towards myself, others, the environment and all living things”. Consider how your day might be affected if you were to engage in doing things that were in support of this value? How might you behave to yourself, to

your partner or family? When we live our values our lives start to feel more authentic and vital- try it out and see for yourself. A self-care exercise you can engage in at the moment is looking after your vitamin D level. Vitamin D is incredibly important in the functioning of our brain, immune system and of course calcium absorption. More and more research has been directed at understanding the link between Vitamin D and depression and other forms of mental health problems and cognitive decline. What we do know is that it is very important, study after study has shown a link between low levels of Vitamin D and increasing levels of depression or cognitive decline. So what can you do? Vitamin D is unique amongst the vitamins because it is a hormone. Sunlight- specifically UVB or ultraviolet rays act on a cholesterol in the body to make an active hormone (cholecalciferol) that acts to change the function of many cells in the body-especially the brain! There is very little vitamin D in our food- a little in oily fish but the bulk of our vitamin D we make ourselves through

ACT Mindfully

Come along to the FREE introductory session to learn about a six-week course being offered at the Walpole Wellness Centre by Kind Minds Training and Therapy. Course starts Tuesday August 9th 2016.

During the free session I will be introducing Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the 6 core

processes you can learn that have been shown to improve vitality and enjoyment of life.

One of the key processes of ACT is mindfulness, or the ability to connect to the present moment without judgement. Mindfulness is both a formal and informal meditation practice that can reduce your stress levels, improve tolerance of chronic pain, improve immune function, protect your brain

from decline and yes…even bring you inner peace.

I hope you give me this opportunity to show you how to get more out of your life.

exposure to sunlight (unless we take a supplement). In order to make enough vitamin D we need approximately 15 minutes (this varies a lot from person to person) in sunshine with most of our skin exposed at least three times a week. Not easy in Walpole in winter, but I recommend that you take your opportunities when you get them to give yourself a Vitamin D boost. At this time of the year it needs to be near mid-day to do much good, but if you can get some of your clothing off whenever it is warm enough and let your skin do its job. it’s your skin that does the work and it doesn’t work if it is covered up. See if you can find a way to get a little more sunshine into your life. For many of us this may still not be enough, especially if you are elderly or have darker skin which both reduce your ability to make vitamin D. Your doctor can check your vitamin D levels with a blood test and let you know if you would do better with a vitamin D supplement. So remember self-care is the value for the month. What can you do to look after your health a little better? Kind regards, Adele. As Western Australia advances closer to the 2016 Census of Population & Housing night on Tuesday 9 August, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is finalising its plans to reach more than 2.3 million people and 960,000 households (2011 Census) across the state. The Tuesday, 9 August Census is predicted to be the largest ever online event in Australia’s history, with two-thirds of the population expected to complete the form online, helping to make this Census the most efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly ever. Census State Director David Waymouth said it was exciting to see the enormous operation beginning to take shape after more than four years of planning. “We’ve recruited about 39,000 extra staff and built the systems in anticipation of millions of people logging on to their computers, tablets or smartphones to complete the Census. It will be our moment to pause and play a part in helping shape the future of Australia’s education, health, transport and infrastructure,” Mr Waymouth said. “Over its 105 year history, the Census has helped to guide trillions of taxpayer dollars to every corner of Australia, so everyone has an interest in making sure they’re counted, ensuring Australia remains a world leader in Census participation and accuracy.” Over the next two months the ABS will participate in events around the country to promote the Census and answer questions about how the Census will change in 2016. “From late July to early August the majority of households across the country will receive a letter from the ABS, addressed ‘To the Resident’, Mr Waymouth said. “The letter will include a unique login code and instructions on how to complete the Census online.

“For those people who can’t complete the Census online or wish to complete a paper form, this can be easily requested. “The Census is compulsory and can be completed securely in around 30 minutes for one person. It’s an easy way for Australians to take a moment and make a difference, so remember get online on August 9.”

Census is coming - it’s your moment to make a difference!

These Awards, together with numerous national and other Awards, spanning some eight years are proudly displayed and taking up one entire wall at the Walpole Community Resource Centre. Shire of Manjimup Walpole Ward Councillor, and Keep Australia Beautiful Council Board Member, Dave Tapley, presented Monty with a framed Certificate of Appreciation and the group presented Rita with a large bouquet of locally grown flowers. The Liberal National Government today announced a $1.66 million project to develop an ‘investment ready' aquaculture zone in coastal waters on Western Australia's south coast.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the south coast aquaculture development zone would support large-scale development of the aquaculture industry, attract investment and increase jobs, and was made possible by $1.3 million of Royalties for Regions funding.

“Aquaculture is the fastest growing primary industry in Australia, however growth rates in WA are constrained because of the cost and time involved in bringing individual aquaculture projects to developmental approval stage,” Mr Redman said.

“Investing in developing strategic assessments at a zone level removes the uncertainty felt by potential developers and investors and reduces start-up time and financial outlay.”

Fisheries Minister Joe Francis said a south coast aquaculture development zone would provide job opportunities, increasing the south coast region's current and future marketability.

“Aquaculture development zones slash approval time from several years to several months, cutting costs and red tape and providing investment-ready areas for large-scale projects,” Mr Francis said.

“The area being considered for the proposed south coast zone encompasses the South-West, Great Southern and Goldfields-Esperance regions, and is expected to comprise multiple areas near regional centres, producing native shellfish and finfish species.”

The three-year project will be undertaken in stages in consultation with stakeholders such as aquaculture producers, representative organisations, investors and local communities.
