The Semi-Final round of the Independence Bank Relay Madness is finished and the final two teams are set. The Scotty Cross Country team defeated Strides of Hope and will be set to defend their title from last year. In the other semi-final round Crafter’s Haven edged out the Skeleton Crew and will take on the Cross Country team in the final. Crafter’s Haven had the most sales for the round and earned the bonus money for their team total. These teams will have until noon on July 18th to get their luminaria sales in to one of the Independence Bank branches in Glasgow, Malta, Poplar or Scobey. In other Relay news, the annual Gas Day will be held on Friday, July 18th. For every gas purchase made on that day, the participating gas stations will make a donation to the Northeast Montana Relay For Life. (it doesn’t cost you anything, just fill up as normal, and the gas stations will make a donation). Those set to participate are: Ezzie’s Westend, Ezzie’s Midtown and Holiday.

Here’s a big fish story.... From the Alaska Dispatch News, there was a 482-pound halibut caught near Gustavus in Southeast Alaska, perhaps the largest halibut caught in the Pacific Ocean in the last decade. 77-year-old Jack McGuire of Anaheim, California reeled the jaw-dropper in on July 3rd near the mouth of Glacier Bay. Taking the hook baited with a chunk of octopus, it came from about 130 feet of water. It measured 92 inches in length and took Jack more than a half hour to land. It yielded around 200 pounds of boneless, skinless fillets. Gustavus is a community that can only be reached by boat or airplane from the Alaska state capital of Juneau, about 45 miles to the east, so it doesn’t get commercially fished. McGuire was on his third annual trip to Gustavus. The world record is a 459-pound halibut caught in 1996 near Dutch Harbor in far Western Alaska by Jack Tragis of Fairbanks. The reason Jack’s 482 pounder is not a new world record is that International Game Fish Association rules ban the use of any tools other than a net or gaffe for landing fish, and the Florida-based IGFA maintains the international record book. It is dangerous to pull monster halibut aboard a boat as their thrashing has been known to injure people and even sink smaller watercraft. The captain of the charter craft didn’t know it was a world record halibut, so he gave it a blast in the head with a .410 shotgun before they managed to get it into the boat. So while Jack doesn’t get his name in the record book, he’ll be enjoying halibut steaks for quite a while. The largest halibut ever caught off Alaska weighed 533 pounds by a Seattle-based longliner (commercial fishing boat) in 2003. There was a 515-pound halibut caught last year with rod & reel in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Norway, according to the Huffington Post.

Montana fisheries officials and major statewide angling groups signed an agreement recently aimed at curbing the spread of illegal fish introductions into state waters. The agreement includes a pledge from angling groups for an additional cash reward of up to $3,250 for information leading to the conviction of persons responsible for an illegal fish introduction. “Since the 1980s, more than 500 illegal introductions have occurred in Montana lakes, reservoirs, ponds and rivers,” said Bruce Rich, chief of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ fisheries division in Helena. “The outlaw dumping of fish has caused irreparable harm to Montana waters and ruined several existing fisheries.”Rich said the rewards offered by Fishing Outfitters Association of Montana, Invasive Species Action Network, Montana BASS Nation, Montana Pikemasters, Montana Trout Unlimited, Montana Wildlife Federation, Walleyes Forever of Montana, and Walleyes Unlimited of Montana are intended to supplement the cash reward of up to $1,000 made available by FWP’s 1-800-TIP-MONT violation report hotline. The combined TIP-MONT and angling groups’ rewards mean that a caller could receive as much as $4,250 for information leading to a conviction. Outlaw fish introductions, commonly called “bucket biology,” displace existing fish, resulting in a loss of fishing opportunity. For instance, rapidly reproducing perch dumped illegally have squeezed out other game fish diminishing that fishery while rarely growing to desired sizes, as has happened in Lake Mary Ronan and Rogers Lake. Lake Mary Ronan was the target again last week when several illegal northern pike were discovered by an angler. Once illegally dumped, unwanted fish often expand to other waters because many of Montana’s aquatic systems are interconnected. FWP and the participating groups hope the additional reward will serve as an incentive for people to report when they suspect someone has dumped fish illegally in a river, stream, pond or lake. “It’s expensive and often impossible to remove illegally introduced fish,” Rich said. “And it’s difficult to catch these law breakers after the fact. That’s why FWP is honored to enter this partnership with anglers and angling

groups—the people who have the most to lose.” One of the hot spots for illegal introductions is northwestern Montana. According to Mark Deleray, Region 1 fish manager in Kalispell, lakes in the Flathead Valley and vicinity are of particular concern. “We have seen illegal introductions of walleye, crappie and smallmouth bass in recent years,” Deleray said. “We ask the public and people living on lakes to be especially observant of behavior that suggests someone is dumping fish. If you see or suspect something, report it immediately.” In 1997, the Montana Legislature increased the fine for an illegal fish introduction to $5,000 and tacked on potential jail time. In 2011, lawmakers doubled the fine to $10,000. If you have any information on an illegal fish introduction call 1-800-TIP-MONT (1-800-847-6668). Or visit FWP online at fwp.mt.gov; click “Enforcement,” then click “TIP-MONT”.
