Give Arizona a Chance
Featured Homes
COuNtRy CLub!
Dear Doreen, Mad doesn’t even describe how I feel about how hot it is. I kept hearing
about the “dry heat” before moving here from the northwest, but this is unbearable. Can I sell my house for a profit after just five months? I heard the prices have really gone up in that time.
—Misguided and MeltedDear M&M,
First, you might want to give yourself some time to adjust. although no one will argue with you about the heat, many people adapt and don’t find it unbearable after a while. You might regret selling in such a rush. and even with the fact that prices have gone up, it’s unlikely you would be able to cover the closing costs, Hoa fees, title expenses, and still turn a profit. If you are willing to break even or lose money then you might be able to move quickly if you think that’s what you want.
I think you should give arizona a fair chance, and if you still want to sell in a year or two, you might be in a better position to do so.

BUSINESS
Tennessee Takeover of Cafe AromaBob Adler has been dreaming of
opening his own restaurant since 1990. So, purchasing Cafe Aroma last month and renaming it the Tennessee Grill was his chance at a dream-come-true.
Adler described the transition as being a “plane in mid-flight and changing pilots.”
Adler’s first move was to hire a baker to offer daily fresh-baked breads, muffins and pastries. And according to Adler, all vegetables used are sourced from Arizona farms.
“That’s what I feed my family, so that’s what I want to feed my customers,” he said.
His plan is to slowly transform the menu into a Southern-influenced selection to eventually include barbecue favorites. He’s excited to offer Anthem residents a taste of family recipes from his home state and show off his signature barbecue sauces: Smoky Mountain Sweet and Smoky Mountain Zinger.
Adler estimates he will complete the transition, including new menu and redecorated interior, by mid-September when he will celebrate with a fish fry dinner. Until then, the Tennessee Grill is open for business. io

It has long seemed the Anthem economy is inversely related to the weather. When the temperature cools,
the economy heats up. Conversely, when the mercury rises, the economy takes a bit of an ice bath. One of the contributing factors is the ebb and flow of seasonal snowbirds and their migrating dollars. That is, until now. Businesses are reporting strong numbers so far this summer, and, while they can’t pinpoint a single reason, many are attributing it to consumers’ desire to invest in their homes, in their local economy… and in themselves.
Climate Change Casey Cottrell, owner of Daisy Mountain Painting, said the warming trend is welcome and unexpected. “For this time of year, I’m surprised. Usually when summer hits, people go on vacation and we prepare to be slow. Now, we’re having a hard time finding time to take off.” Cottrell said his business is up 30 percent over this time last year.
Scott Zychowski, manager of Andrew Z Jewelry, said he’s seeing a bump in the summer staple of repairs, custom work and bridal remounts. Zychowski said, “The percentage of that business has increased.”
IN&OUT STAFF PHOTO
OSR Physical Therapy, usually sensitive to snowbird traffic, is seeing an unusually busy summer as are many other local businesses.
Temperature Up. Business Down?

And then there’s Jen Long, a relative newcomer to the Anthem business landscape. She purchased Plaster World last December. Along with the name change to MudPie Studios and some added store offerings, such as candle making and art classes, came more summer business than expected. “It’s been super busy from when we open the door in the a.m. until closing.” With kids out of school for the summer, it would be expected her business will heat up. But gauging the previous owners’ summer business experience, Long is taken back by the numbers. When summer hit, business went up a whopping 80 percent! “It’s been crazy. I had no idea.” she said.
OSR Physical Therapy celebrates 10 years of business in Anthem this year and has weathered the economic extremes. Owner Aaron Williams said the business is particularly sensitive to snowbird traffic, “We typically see a slight slowdown in summer because of the number of winter visitors who leave for the summer, but this summer our numbers have actually stayed consistent with busier times of the year.” The Winds of Change “When I see home values go up, people are more comfortable doing things to maintain their homes like painting, and replacing water heaters,” said Cottrell. Daisy Mountain Painting ran with six crew members last year. This year, it is operating with 15.
Long attributes the uptick to greater consumer confidence and feels people are more conscious where they spend their money. “I think people are also wanting to help out more local business rather than travel into town.”
The Snowbird Effect “It could definitely be people are staying in Anthem and not going out of state to

second homes… people doing stay-cations instead,” Zychowski said.
According to some members of the Golden Go Getters—a social group for the 50+ crowd—as much as 80 percent of Anthem’s residents over 50 reside in Anthem year-round.
Williams suggests a shift in priorities might play a part. “It seems people are investing more into themselves in the recent tougher economic times, so we are happy we are here to help keep people healthy while keeping our business growing.”
The Forecast There is a very tangible, if measured, sense of
optimism from business owners. Some, less measured than others. Zychowski sees no cooling trend in the forecast. “I’m extremely confident the trend will continue. I see it going nowhere but up.” io
