PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — A two mile run, maybe some pushups or perhaps lift a few weights, but sometimes the best way to stay motivated about main-taining your fitness may benefit from trying something new and different at the base gym.
So why not mix it up and try something new? There is no better place than the Peterson Fitness Center to explore options.
“We offer such a large variety of ways for people to come out and enjoy fitness,” said Roger Hill, fitness and sport manager at the Peterson Fitness Center. “Being in good shape is just a part of who we are and what we do as Airmen. We offer more than 32 different types of classes from aerobics and spinning to Zumba.”
But it’s not all about sweating; maybe you have always wanted to try yoga? Stretching, practicing good posture; along with relax-ing from the stresses of everyday life is also important to overall fitness and wellbeing.
“We also have many different activities going on throughout the day and the months, like tennis and racquetball tournaments, lots of intramural sports — and other things

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 4th Space Control Squadron, one of the 21st Space Wing’s many geographically separate units, stood up operations at Peterson AFB July 11.
The GSU, once located at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., will be collocat-ed with the 76th SPCS on the Peterson East Space Control compound.
The move also included a change of command ceremony at building 2027.
The move affects about 90 positions and is being made to consolidate the 4th and 76th SPCS missions under one roof, where parallel missions can benefit from shared infrastructure and resources. The 90 active duty and civilian personnel assigned to those positions are expected to be in place by the end of the year.
“Relocating the 4th Space Control Squadron from Holloman to Peterson will benefit the space control mission area in multiple ways,” said Lt. Col. Scott Brodeur, outgoing 4th SPCS commander. “We will certainly save money on TDYs and travel interact-ing with the 21st Operations Group and our sister squadron, but most

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN AIR FORCE STATION, Colo. — I often find myself saying “these Airmen nowadays!” I’d say it’s a rite of passage, but let me pose one simple question. Were we really that much different than these Airmen nowadays? There are plenty of you saying yes I was! Hold that thought.
When I entered the Air Force in 1987, I was one of those Airmen who provided my supervisors nothing but headaches, attitude, and plenty of self-absorbed opinions. I found myself saying “these old people nowadays.” I wasn’t a bad Airman by any stretch but I was an 18-year-old-kid who thought he knew everything about the world and no one could tell me differently. Not much changes from one generation to the next.
My supervisor, first sergeant, chief, and commander would always say; “Amn Dooms, you have no clue how lucky you have it” which led to some long rant on how hard life was when they were Airmen. I always waited for them to say “I walked to work, uphill both ways...in the snow” at which point I would roll my eyes and say “give it a rest old timer”...just like my 16-year-old daughter does to me daily. Was it my fault that I had a VCR, a Sony Walkman, a pair of Nike Air Jordans, bazil-lion music cassettes, and a TV that didn’t sit on the floor? I was simply taking advantage
of what technology offered while making my life simpler. Not too much different than what Airmen are doing these days. Every generation gets the privilege of experiencing the latest and greatest innovations. Currently, it’s the Blue Ray players, iPods, Nike Air Jordans (some things never go out of style), the internet, TVs light enough to hang on the wall, and yes, the cell phone, which is probably one of the greatest and most irritating inventions ever introduced!
One of the great things about my job, I have the honor of speaking to First Term Airmen Center and Airman Leadership School classes. I usually go in with eagerness and excitement but leave realizing how different our perspec-tives are. I usually get on my soapbox saying I’m old enough to be your father and “you Airmen nowadays have no clue how lucky you have it!” Without fail, once I say it, I always
flash back to the late ‘80s when I heard the exact same thing from my leaders. Somewhere along the way, I became that person I use to make fun of. Karma is a tough pill to swallow!
We all know the Airmen nowadays are dif-ferent, but they are only different because- wait for it — we’re getting older! As we get older, our thought processes change, our philoso-phies change, our beliefs change, the way we view the younger generation changes, and our hair lines change. Are the Airmen changing or are we changing? The way I see it...I think I turned out ok, I’ll say that my fellow SNCO’s have turned out ok and we’re helping lead the greatest Air Force the world has ever seen. This only happened because our supervisors saw through our shortcomings, mentored us, and never gave up on our generation. I know the “old timers” are doing the same thing today...seeing through our Airmen’s short-comings and mentoring them daily with the occasional “these Airmen nowadays.” Quite soon, we’re going to turn over the reins of our great Air Force to this current generation and I for one am 100 percent confident and have absolutely no doubt they will succeed. Besides, if they need our help...they’ll text us, send us a Facebook message, or tweet us. I sure do miss the ‘80s.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Children perform a play at the conclusion of this year’s vacation bible school, held at the Peterson Chapel July 7-11. The theme this year was ‘SonTreasure Island’, where more than 50 children learned about bible verses, all under the backdrop of shipwrecks and buried treasure. Other activities included crafts, games and music. “The kids had a blast and were learning about the Bible at the same time,” said Cyndi Lilienthal, Peterson Chapel religious education coordinator. For information about other chapel activities, call 556-4442.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Sometimes everyday life can be stressful enough, but when you add the responsibil-ity of caring for a family member that has special needs like cerebral palsy or autism; things can become overwhelming.
The Peterson Chapel and Exceptional Family Member Program office have teamed up to help ease that stress by of-fering a one-day retreat workshop for the parents and guardians of special needs family members. The workshop will be held at the Glen Eyrie Conference Center in Colorado Springs Aug. 1 and is avail-able free of charge to anyone stationed at Peterson AFB who currently has a fam-ily members enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program.
“It’s going to be just a fun day away from the base where parents can really work on their communication with each other. We are also in the process of trying to coordi-nate daycare so that the parents can come on their own and really focus and benefit from the event,” said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Timothy Porter, 21st Space Wing chaplain.
The Department of Defense created the Exceptional Family Member Program in the early 1980s. EFMP is a mandatory program within all branches of the DOD that work with other military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, hous-ing, educational, medical, and personnel services worldwide to military families with special needs.
Peterson has more than 100 families enrolled in the EFMP, which means there are a lot of parents who can benefit from this type of unique event.
“The training is going to focus on the four lenses — it’s also called colors — which is really fun and looks at personali-ties and identifies how it effects your rela-tionship and your ability to work together as a team to support each other during stressful times,” said Porter. “Bringing the parents together so they can network and know they are not alone, that is so impor-tant for them.”
This is an event for service members and their spouses to spend some quality time together, meet other couples dealing with the same issues in a relaxing and beautiful setting. The Glen Eyrie Conference Center is located on the north end of Garden of the Gods park and has been host to past Team Pete retreats and activities.
To register for this event, contact Jackie Wickham, the EFMP coordinator for Peterson AFB at 556-6141.
The goal of the EFMP (information and referral) is to provide special needs families with the most accurate and up-to-date in-formation and resources regarding EFMP, local resources and support, disability-specific news and anything that may be of interest to the families.
For more information about the Exceptional Family Member Program at Peterson AFB, visit the Airman and Family Readiness Center in building 350, call 556-6141 or DSN 834-6141, or go online to http://www.21fss.com/about/airman-family-readiness/exceptional-family-mem-ber-program-efmp-coordinator/.
Chapel, EFMP team to provide relief importantly, we are maximizing our space control resources and ex-
pertise together in one location. This relocation creates efficiencies in manpower, improves and advances our space control training and evaluation programs, and allows us to focus on our expeditionary space superiority mission in support of combatant commanders.”
The 4th SPCS provides combat space superiority effects to the com-mander, Joint Functional Component Command — Space and theater combatant commanders. The squadron also deploys globally to conduct mobile and transportable space superiority operations as directed by the commander of Air Force Space Command.
“Commanding the 4th Space Control Squadron ‘Pirates’ is the ab-solute highlight of my career,” Brodeur said. “The men and women of the squadron are consummate space professionals who exude the Air Force core values of integrity, service before self, and excellence in all they do. Over the last two years they supported the 21st Operations Group with six combat deployments to U.S. Central Command in 2013. Completing the final phase of relocating the squadron to Colorado Springs is another phenomenal accomplishment to add to an impres-sive list of unit accolades.”
In addition to a new home, the squadron got a new commander July 11, when Lt. Col. Eric Lingle took the reins from Brodeur. Lingle was formerly the 21st Operations Support Squadron’s operations of-ficer and responsible for the consolidation of Space Control Mission Qualification Training and Evaluation programs under the 21st OG at Peterson AFB.
“I am honored to join the men and women of the 4th Space Control Squadron,” Lingle said. “They are a truly amazing group of Airmen that represent the very finest warfighters and family support networks our Air Force and our nation has to offer.”

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Air Force leaders announced changes to headquarters staff manning and or-ganization today.
The Air Force will create efficiencies by deactivating and realigning orga-nizations at Headquarters Air Force, Major Commands, Numbered Air Forces and Field Operating Agencies, resulting in savings of $1.6 billion across the Air Force in the next five years.
“I will work to ensure the world’s best Air Force is the most capable at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayer,” said Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James. “Everyone knows our economy is still not where it should be; we have a responsibil-ity to ensure that every dollar adds value to the taxpayers and our na-tional defense.”
The changes are a result of a com-prehensive effort to reduce over-head costs, increase efficiencies, eliminate redundant activities and improve effectiveness and business processes (also known as Air Force Management Headquarters Review). The efficiencies created through the reorganization will also help meet the Department of Defense’s directive to reduce costs and staff levels by at least 20 percent, eliminating 3,459 posi-tions at headquarters across the Air Force, both in country and at overseas locations. As part of ongoing cost sav-ings initiatives, the Air Force will also continue to reduce contract spend-ing, operating budgets and travel
expenditures. To minimize the effect on civilian
personnel, the Air Force will initiate Voluntary Early Retirement Authority programs and Voluntary Separation Incentive Pay to foster voluntary re-ductions before pursuing involuntary measures. As part of ongoing efforts to responsibly shape the force, mili-tary members were offered a variety of voluntary incentive programs.
“We are aggressively pursuing re-ductions within the first year, rather than spread them out over five years as allowed by DoD,” said James. “It’s better for Airmen because it provides them predictability and allows us to re-stabilize our workforce sooner. It also allows us to harvest the savings earlier so that we can plow it back into readiness and some of our key modernization programs.”
The Air Force’s goal is to go beyond the 20 percent reduction mandated by the DoD so any additional savings can be achieved from staff functions above the wing level, and set to pro-vide additional combat capability to the combatant commanders.
“The Air Force has been making incremental changes in our business practices for the last several years, but we must change the way we are do-ing business if we are to meet the Air Force’s goal to reduce staffing func-tions by more than 20 percent,” ex-plained Bill Booth, Air Force’s Acting Deputy Chief Management Officer. “Reducing higher headquarters’ staffs means we can save money that can
be re-invested in getting ready for combat missions at the wing level.”
The largest initiative will include centralizing policy and oversight of installation and mission support activities within a newly created Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, which will report to Air Force Materiel Command. Execution will remain at the local level.
“The current and projected fiscal climate make it essential to centralize management and streamline support to the maximum extent possible in order to improve efficiency and ef-fectiveness, as well as deliver more standardized levels of service across the Air Force,” Booth said. Support functions currently spread across the MAJCOMs’ staffs will be centralized at the AFIMSC.
The Air Force will also make chang-es to the Headquarters Air Force staff organization by splitting Operations, Plans and Requirements (A3/5) and Strategic Plans and Programs (A8) and reorganizing them into the new Operations (A3) organization which will stand alone and merge the planning staffs into the new A5/8 organization.
Also, the current programming functions from A8 will be merged into the service’s financial manage-ment organization (FM).
“We will now have an organiza-tion, A5/8, that is responsible for de-veloping, managing and constantly assessing an Air Force strategy that
is bounded by long-range resource projections and another organization, FM, that deals primarily with the day-to-day budget activities involved in running the Air Force,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III explained. “Keeping organizations aligned will ensure we keep moving towards our long-range strategic goals despite the short-term budget upheaval we face regularly.”
The Air Force will also realign sev-eral functions that currently report to the headquarters in an effort to better support combatant command-ers and realign some field operating agencies to operational MAJCOMs, merge FOAs with similar missions and deactivate others.
The Air Force Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency is also being realigned from Headquarters Air Force as a FOA to become part of a new operational numbered air force under Air Combat Command.
Realigning the Air Force ISR Agency into the new 25th Air Force within ACC ensures warfighting commands will have the best pos-sible intelligence from integrated national and tactical ISR capabili-ties, while appropriately realigning operational activities and “organize, train and equip” responsibilities of the AF ISR Agency from execution by Headquarters AF to a MAJCOM.

On June 22, 2014 the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and the Boeing-led industry team completed an end-to-end
systems test that resulted in the successful intercept of a threat-representative target. This intercept once again
demonstrates the operational capability and readiness of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) System,
America’s only defense against the growing threat of long-range ballistic missiles.

of that nature — that adds a little competitiveness to your workout,” said Hill.
The Peterson Fitness Center has a team of fitness specialist who have the knowledge and training to help you succeed; from showing you how to use a new piece of equipment to answering questions about nutrition and living a healthier lifestyle.
“We offer many different things that help you look at fitness in a different light. A lot of people look at ‘fitness’ as going for a run or maybe lifting some weights. We have a brand new func-tional fitness room where people can go to challenge themselves with kettle-
bells, pull-up bars and jump boxes,” said Hill. “Fitness is a lifestyle and a mentality that stays with you for the rest of your life.”
Some people are content with a simple run and pushups, but to chal-lenge yourself and to improve takes dedication; and sometimes maybe a little encouragement from your fellow wingman.
“Team Pete is already leading the way in being active about their fitness; we have many dedicated people who come to the fitness center on a regular basis, from active duty to Reservist, retirees and spouses. These people are dedicated to their fitness and their ac-
tions prove it,” said Hill. The Peterson fitness center rivals
any you will find in the local Colorado Springs area. The base gym offers a large assortment of activities, classes and equipment for to try something new. The majority of classes are free of charge, with the exception of a small fee for all Zumba and Zumba step class. Best of all, the membership is something everyone can afford — free.
For more information about ac-tivities and classes available at the Peterson Fitness Center, visit http://www.21fss.com/about/fitness-center/ or stop by the gym located at building 560/570.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Air Force leaders want Airmen to share their stories with the world and designed the 2014 American Airman Video Contest with that pur-pose in mind.
“Every Airman has a story — and smartphone technol-ogy now allows those Airmen to share those stories to a wider audience than ever before,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh, III.
The contest, which begins July 1, asks Airmen to shoot a selfie video where they share individual stories of service and showcase the unique missions they do every day.
“I think we’ll get some really creative, cool videos that together, tell the larger Air Force story,” Welsh said.
Airmen who want to participate should upload their video, which should be no longer than 30 seconds, to a personal YouTube account and email a link to the Air Force Social Media team at [email protected].
The videos will be reviewed to ensure they don’t inad-
vertently violate any security, policy or propriety guide-lines before they are released for public viewing on the AFBlueTube channel on YouTube.
After review, each major command will select a winner within the command. The 10 finalists’ videos will be will be available on AFBlueTube for public voting from Aug. 12 to 22. Voters can “like” their favorite videos and the video with the most “likes” will win.
The winning video will be shown at the September Air Force Association conference in Washington, D.C., which attracts thousands of visitors annually and receives heavy media attention.
Contest officials said there are important rules partici-pating Airmen should follow, including:• The contest is open to Guard, Reserve and active-duty
Airmen to participate• Finalists must be in good standing without any adverse
administrative actionsFor more details and complete contest rules, visit http://
airforcelive.dodlive.mil/contest.“Our Airmen are an amazing communication resource,”
Welsh said. “No one tells the Air Force story like they do.”

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Col. Thomas L. James assumed command of the 1st Space Brigade from the outgoing commander, Col. James R. Meisinger, during a change of command ceremony July 11 at Patriot Park here.
Lt. Gen. David L. Mann, commanding gen-eral, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, hosted the ceremony for the 1st Space Bde., which provides critical space capabilities and products to Warfighters and combatant commanders.
“I’m sure all of us would agree the command is one of the most important positions in our Army,” Mann said after passing the brigade colors to the new commander. “No other po-sition has more responsibilities or has more of an impact on a unit’s success. In fact being selected for command is one of the ultimate votes of confidence that one can receive from his superiors. It’s certainly a significant achieve-ment in any officer’s career.
“It requires the right officer, the right leader, to lead Soldiers,” Mann added. “Col. Meisinger has been that leader. He has led this brigade with distinction and with class during one of our nation’s longest wars. I’ve relied heavily on Jim’s experience, his knowledge and his insights because I knew that in every case I would be provided with mature thoughtful and well-reasoned recommendations.”
As the outgoing commander, Meisinger thanked the Soldiers, civilians and contrac-tors of the 1st Space Bde.
“They were the best part of every day,” Meisinger said. “And they’re the ones who are all around the world right now executing the mission.”
Meisinger then turned his attention to the new commander.
“Tom, I have known you and I’ve admired you since the summer of 2001 when we met in the first FA40 course,” he said. “You are extraor-dinarily qualified. You will be able to take the brigade to new levels, I’m sure. And I look for-ward to supporting you from the Army staff.”
Upon taking command of the brigade, James thanked Meisinger for “a smooth transition of such a top-notch organization.”
“It’s great to be back in Colorado Springs,” James said. “My wife Nicole and I look forward to our time with the 1st Space Bde. team.
“Lt. Gen. Mann, thank you for your trust and confidence in allowing me the distinct privilege of commanding this incredible unit,” he continued.
“To the Soldiers, DA civilians, and families of the 1st Space Bde., I’ve had the very good fortune to work closely with you over the last dozen years or so, and I’ve seen first-hand the incredible work you do both from inside your ranks as well as on the business end of the ca-pabilities you provide to the Warfighter,” James said. “Your work spans the scope of the highest strategic levels right down to the Soldiers on patrol and in desperate contact with the enemy, and you do it well.
“It is my extreme honor to work amongst such a talented unit so committed to the se-curity and safety of our great nation,” James concluded.
Prior to the official ceremony, awards were presented to Meisinger and his wife. Mann pre-sented the Legion of Merit Award to Meisinger for exceptionally meritorious service as com-mander of the 1st Space Bde.
Mann then awarded Meisinger’s wife Shannon with the Commander’s Award for Public Service and a certificate of appreciation for her contributions and efforts to the Soldiers and families of the 1st Space Bde.
