EDITOR’S EPISTLE Have to express my undying gratitude to my co-editor , my sister Kay for taking over the newsletter

while recovering from my accident. Also must include my daughter Dawn (nicknamed Nurse (Kratchit) for
nursing me for 2 weeks after the 4 weeks in rehab. I can hardly wait to get back in the saddle…..well
maybe not a saddle.! Thank Heavens, all three of us have our Challenges finished, did mine before the
fall !!!! I can hardly wait to see all your challenges ! And I hope to see you at the next meeting learning
about the care of quilts. And one more thing. Thanks to all of you for your cards, calls

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy summer! I hope you all had a
wonderful and safe Fourth of July and
celebrated in some way being an
American. This is a great country and
we can’t forget to be grateful and show
our appreciation for being a part of it.
We’ve had some great guests over
the last few months. I’ve sure enjoyed all
the new techniques and variations that
we’ve been shown. This month should
be another wonderful evening with Anne
Copeland. I’m sure we’ll all pick up a lot
of tips and tricks from her.
Remember the next month the
Challenge Quilts are due, so if you
haven’t gotten going on yours, this is the
time to get cracking, not many days left.
So get your sewing machines humming
and I’ll see you on the 16th.

at the back table.
Is there any interest in a Wearable Art category for the quilt show judging? The committee will be
finalizing award plans soon.
Another sign-up at the back table: Jeannie Mazzacane has the list of local merchants from whom
we’ll be seeking raffle donations. Please help with this activity.
CHALLENGE QUILT – Kits still available, see Laurie Nahay to participate.

COMMITTEE MEETING
Judge has been contacted to be sure
that she is still on for our big event. She
will be driving up to Fawnskin (Janet’s
house) to start the judging at 10 am on
Aug 28th. Award ribbons have been
ordered & the rental tables have also
been ordered. We sold quite a few
tickets for our Opportunity Quilt this last
weekend at the Art Walk in the Village.
I will be getting you all to sign up for
working at the Quilt Show during the
next two guild meetings. Bonnie Snell
will be working up our publicity through
your volunteering to display our pink
signs announcing the Quilt Show event
on Labor Day weekend. I have received
a warm welcome from the staff at the
Mom and Dad Project to display our
banner for the show, the new banner
donated by Ursula’s husband Bill.
Wendy’s husband Mike has consent-
ed to be our “Sheriff” again during the
Aug 31st evening “show set-up.”
And Ladies, start checking with your
husbands to volunteer for the Lynch
Mob (the husbands that hang our quilts
that Friday evening ^ take them down
Sunday Afternoon when the show
closes)

COMFORT QUILTS
What a nice month it’s been – we’ve received
several special donations for our comfort quilts pro-
gram! For starters, three cozy quilts were turned in
at the June meeting. Thank you to Maggie Regalado,
Diane Borcyckowski and Janet Walz for helping us
share a hug with someone in need!
We also collected more than a dozen crazy
blocks at the meeting. These blocks had been sug-
gested by Maggie and Kathy, our Bargain Table
Committee. Thank you to everyone who took one of
those little brown mystery bags home and brought
back a block! I’m assembling some of the blocks into
a *c*r*a*z*y* comfort quilt, and will save the ex-
tras for a future project.
It was so nice to receive a generous donation
of batting from Jill Gilham. Batting is ALWAYS ap-
preciated and it will be put to good use – thanks, Jill!
and Sharon Reeve was also thinking of us when she
accepted a late friend’s quilt stash and brought it all
the way up here from San Diego for our use. This
wealth of fabric, in addition to the HUGE amount of
stash we recently received from Tish Duesler’s
husband, Dave, will be enough to keep us busy for
many many months to come. Thank-yous go to
Sharon and Dave for their support of our comfort
quilts program!
As in past years, we will have a special com-
fort quilts exhibit at the quilt show in September.
If you have an almost-done project, plan to finish it
up and turn it in by the August meeting so it can be
included in the display.
We are currently collecting quilts for both
Doves (about 50 x 70) and Meals on Wheels (about
42 x 58). Please browse through the tub of fabric
bundles at the July meeting, find a color combo that
catches your eye, and take it home to work on in
your spare time. Other than the general size
guidelines, anything goes with comfort quilts, so you
can experiment with a fun design while you create a
quilt that will warm someone’s heart. I always have
batting available too, so contact me if you need
anything for your 2012 Comfort Quilt project.
WOUNDED WARRIORS
Hip-hip-hooray!!!! Two patriotic quilts were
finished and turned in at the June meeting – big
thank-yous to Ann McNicholl and Sandi Cannarella
for their work on these quilts! The quilts will be
labeled and sent to Afghanistan soon, to provide
comfort to injured soldiers.
Thanks, also, to everyone who turned in red-white
-and-blue blocks at the June meeting. We will
continue to collect 12 ½” patriotic blocks at the
next two meetings, so if you haven’t made yours
yet, please jump in! And if you have one of our
Wounded Warriors quilt kits, please plan to get it
back to me by September, whether it’s finished
or not. There are at least four kits out being
worked on right now, and our goal is to get them
all completed and mailed before our contact unit
gets reassigned.
Thank you for your support of our
Wounded Warriors!
Thanks for your support!

2012 CHALLENGE QUILT
The CHALLENGE QUILTS for 2012
are due at our August meeting! For some of us
last minute quilters here are a few tip taken
from “The Keepsake Quilter” to get you
motivated! Creativity: Color, fabric and patterns
used in an unusual way. Design reflects something
unique about your personality or style.
Use of color: Color values (lights and darks)
arranged in an interesting way. Color accents lend
spark, design interest.
Workmanship: Piecing fits smoothly and lies flat.
Applique stitches are invisible or add to the design.
Binding is neat and square. Embellishments are
tasteful.
Design Balance: Design has a focal point. Size of
the design elements are in scale with the overall
design and the sashes and borders are well propor-
tioned. Uniform amount of quilting over the entire
quilt top.
REMEMBER: to bring in a bag and cover
your quilt label so your name is not showing!
You will get another notice with in the time
frame to drop it off at the church before the
meeting. Mary & I would like to thank all of
you that participated and shared your creativity
with the quilt!

Mary Price
BLOCK OF THE MONTH
This is the last block for this year’s
Block of the Month. The block is
Kentucky Chain. I could not find a
good set of directions for this block on
the internet, so contact me if you need
one of the instruction books. You can
also make and bring any of the
previous month’s block if you are
catching up and be entered in our
monthly drawing. Also if you want to
make Wounded Warrior blocks with
these patterns, that will qualify you to
be in the drawing too. Next month,
maybe we’ll have a few finished
quilts to see??
