VMware IT: Mature Virtualized Environment

§  Infrastructure state •  VMware’s corporate IT servers are 99% virtualized •  6500 virtual machines on 293 physical hosts

(22:1 consolidation) •  4000 server and 9000 View virtual machines

•  Server virtual machines 2/3 POSIX and 1/3 Windows

•  3,100 SF of datacenter space •  3.5 Petabytes of storage

• Minimal or no downtime for hardware maintenance

•  Virtual machines can be provisioned within minutes

• Managed by 9 cloud administrators

§  Business state •  Estimated saving of 50%+ over non-virtualized environment

So what’s the challenge?

Fundamental IT challenge

Infrastructure Operations

Virtual machine provisioning is one small piece of the puzzle. We have several groups and silo automation initiatives, but getting all of our systems and teams to work in harmony is a different story! Provisioning still takes days or weeks… External providers challenging IT with on-demand services, innovative business models

We used to own the servers running our apps. Now we don’t know if the apps can get the resources they need to run well.

We’ve spent a fortune on monitoring tools. Why are our end users still the first to know about performance problems and why do they take so long to solve?

Forget rapid provisioning or decommissioning… … I’m expected to monitor AND support higher loads but cannot hire any new staff!

Executing complex operations faster and at lower cost

How to Build Cloud to Support the New Consumption Model?

Consumers

IT

• Automated provisioning/de-provisioning, administration, and monitoring

• Cost Model to support Consumption Model

• Easily integrate with Infrastructure Management Systems

vCloud Stack enables you to build, automate, scale, manage, and monitor your Cloud

• vCloud Automation Center as customer self-service portal to request on-demand and manage services

• Dispatch requests to provision workloads on appropriate service profiles

• Tie self-service to Operation Support Systems

Self Service Portal Service Desk Billing Monitoring…

CMDB IPAM Configuration Existing Services…

vCloud Automation and Management Platform Initiative Capabilities

Capability vCloud Automation and Management Platform Service Catalog Extensive service catalog capability based on vCloud Automation Center

Blueprinting Extensive blueprint capability based on App Director

Provision, scale-out, in-place upgrade a blueprint multiple times with in the same vLAN

Provisioning

Geared towards production ready workloads

Policy-based automated provisioning - Balance Costs with respect to performance requirements: •  Use fast provisioning for low cost environments •  Use full clones with custom choice of storage, networks, load balancing etc.

Highly customizable

De-provisioning – Tear down and reclaim all the resources for optimized resource usage

Monitoring Single pane of glass - Monitors resource consumption as well as application behavior

Management Comprehensive unified platform for pre-provision set-up, configuration, provision-time auditing and management, post provisioning workload inventory, monitoring, etc.

Use Cases Any use case Targeted toward use cases such as "Dev/Test, UAT,” “Sales Demos," "Training," Bug Fixing,” etc.

Portability Is completely portable as an OVF and can be setup in-house

Hybrid Cloud Multiple options for Hybrid cloud

•  With in house - IPsec with any cloud provider + Private Cloud •  vCloud Automation and Management Platform on Cloud - IPsec with any other cloud +

Private Cloud
