Road Report. By Gary Emery

A Motorsports Month

October was motorsports month for Molly and Gary Emery. Activities began on October 3rd when they added their AH 3000 to a formation of other Big Healeys from the K.C. Austin~Healey Club for the drive to Springdale, Arkansas and Brits in the Ozarks. The highlight of that day’s drive was lunch at “Cars on the Road” a small diner located on Route 66 in Galena, Kansas that inspired the Disney movie Cars. Molly is standing by the tow-truck that was the model for the movie character “Mater” in the photo below. Somewhere along the route, the right rear brake cylinder froze up on the Emery’s car. Backing-off the brake shoes and partially disassembling the hand brake provided a temporary quick fix. Upon arriving in Springdale, the group joined 200 other British cars for the weekend. Every familiar marque and some not so familiar ones were represented.

Friday was devoted to touring the area with a stop at War Eagle Mill. Molly and Gary suffered more car problems on the way back to Springdale with the failure of two successive fuel pumps. The second one was finally persuaded to run by removing the filler cap. Some local drivers were convinced the car broke down on the hilly, twisty road just to annoy them but it was otherwise only a short delay.

Saturday’s car show was relocated to the hotel parking lot because of rain. Participants and other hotel guests, including at least one member of ZZ Top, made brief forays to the parking lot between rain squalls to see the cars in their optimistically named “weather gear.” Saturday night’s dinner featured a very humorous talk by John Twist, a well-known MG mechanic, about his life in British motoring.

The K.C. Austin~Healey club held its own breakfast awards meeting Sunday morning to conclude the event. The Emery’s were pleased to receive the “Ladies’ Choice Award” because the club is home to many outstanding cars.

Molly and Gary’s motorsports month continued the following weekend at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit near Tulsa where Gary raced his Spec F Production Austin~Healey Sprite. A carburetor problem discovered while preparing for the races was not completely corrected so the car badly underperformed. Even so, it was a great fall weekend in Oklahoma and to paraphrase an old saying, “a bad day racing is better than a good day doing almost anything else.”

A trip to Austin Texas for the Sports Car Vintage Racing Association’s National Championship October 25-27 completed the Emery’s motorsports month. More than 500 vintage race cars from across the country converged on Austin for four days of practice, qualifying and racing on the new Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 track. Every imaginable type of car was there from pre-war classics to 1990s F1s. Notable cars included a 1935 Miller-Ford 2-man Indy 500 race car and a spectacular Maserati grand prix car pictured below. Walking through the paddocks was like seeing years of motorsports magazines come to life.

Eric Frana’s Iowa Life.

Greetings from Iowa! It’s been busy two and half months. Been nice connecting with family and friends again. Initial seven weeks were spent in a hotel. Nice not having to make my bed, clean or cook, but eating out everyday wasn’t ideal either, even if someone else’s dime. Finding a house in the realm of Tecumseh was tough. Weighed several options from building, significant rework, minor repairs, move in ready to new construction. For those who’ve heard story of my Dad and numbers stemming from Section 3, Lot 3, when I saw the address of the place I purchased, it was pretty much a done deal, sight unseen, of course it wouldn’t truly be at easy. Its located at 5153 S23 Highway, Carlisle, Iowa 50047. About five miles in the country, southeast of Des Moines. Work is 13 miles, taking about 17 minute commute. Handy Dog is happy having a five acre yard. Shopping 15-20 minutes away. Home was recently updated, although I’ve been completing details, like knobs on the kitchen cabinets. Lights, switches and receptacles wired right and in proper locations. Although my MGB was in storage about 10 miles from the hotel, it did come out quite a bit. Was able to join Iowa British Car Club and attend their first fall event. We met at a mall parking lot, then drove to a small ice cream shop in Indianola. From there, headed to Knoxville to the National Sprint Car Museum. Several of us went to back to Indianola for a pretty good pizza. Monthly scheduled gatherings start again in November. Another IBCC member does have a MGB v8. Looking forward to see it one of these days. Hillman’s home while residing in the hotel was in a storage yard outside on my trailer. It was easy to spot from a major road, which drew some attention. One even stopped by the storage unit office for my number. Talking to fellow IBCC members, a couple said, “That’s your car?!?!?! Wondering who owns it.” Well it’s nice and cozy in a building at my place. Makes me think of James’ mini garage, except a door wasn’t installed in the opening, the wall was reconstructed since I won’t be taking it out in the immediate future. Work is good. Didn’t take long to feel like I’m part of the team. Think it’s the right fit at the right time. Although many things are going right here, I do miss the company of fellow LABCC members. Can’t state it any way other than you’re just great people. Your absentee president,Eric

1957 Arnold has arrived.! Gary Emery and his lovely wife Molly, took delivery of Arnold after many brief inquisitive decisions. Arnold is short for his age and green, yet very svelte and quick. Just visiting the happy couple with their new arrival brought beers to to my eyes. Sure, he’s been around the road a while, but he posesses a red-lipped grin guaranteed to hunt down anyone in his path. I couldn’t help but hugging and smiling at the aluminum fella.! Now view him and see what you think of Arnold. He was actually born in 1957 in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Although he has Triumph TR-3 mechanicals, they say he doesn’t leak on the floor! - Bill

Club Minutes by Susan McKenzie;October 1, 2013LAWRENCE ALL BRITISH CAR CLUBMeeting Notes of the meeting held at Conroy's Pub There were 23 in attendance. Alan opened the meeting. Rallye: Alan indicated that the Rallye committee would meet very soon. The registration form went out with the newsletter and has been e-mailed to several clubs. Things still needing to be completed are a sign-up sheet for the day of tasks, and filling goodie bags for the participants. Dave Holzmeister has the route of 160 miles set to go. Alan suggested that club members get their registration forms completed and mailed in. Dave reported that he is having rallye numbers for the cars being made up. Lawrence Antique Car Club Show: Gordon reminded everyone that the Lawrence antique car club's annual car show at the Douglas County Fairgrounds will be held on Sunday. A couple of years ago the LABCC won a prize for club attendance...let's try that again! A guest in attendance, John Styers, drove in on a Jensen Healey for this meeting. He is the President of the KC All British Car Club's Car Show. He indicated that attendance was u 20% this year, and the that event on Saturday night was a lot of fun for everyone. Next year's show will again be held on Labor Day weekend at Zona Rosa. The show will include a British band. James reported on attending a Rallye in Dayton, Ohio two weeks before the meeting. It was in conjunction with the Ohio Morgan owners club gathering he attended and James was able to drive a '66 Morgan. Dave & Debbie and James & Susan attended the McPherson Highland Games this year. Gary Emery is racing and did very well with gaining points for the season. His new race car was built in Canada in 1957. It has a TR3 drive train. Alan told of a chip and scrape accident while working on the seats of his Lotus. The moral of the story was: Quit before getting frustrated with a project and increasing the chances of bad things happening. Respectfully submitted,Susan McKenzie
