–---DRIVING TIP----DOUBLE CLUTCHING HELPS MINIMIZE GRINDING OF GEARS AND CAN

MAKE IT EASIER TO COMPETE WITH MODERN TRAFFIC

by Ron Lawson, Columbus, IN Region of MARC

You can smooth the up shifting by double clutching. When you shift out of first, shift to neutral and let out the clutch with your foot off the gas, then push in the clutch and shift to second and

accelerate. Repeat this for the second to third shift. Practice will help you to learn the correct engine speed and road speed at which to shift. Double clutching is better than jamming the gears, as you are trying to match gear speeds, so the gear teeth slide together smoothly.

You can downshift from 3rd to second in this manner:Depress the clutch and shift from 3rd to neutral, let out the clutch, tap the gas pedal to slightly rev the

engine, depress the clutch, shift into second, release the clutch and accelerate. This maneuver requiressome practice to find the speed and engine revving at which downshifting works best for your car; it should be done only at speeds under 15 mph. Downshifting should be a relatively rare maneuver given the low speeds at which gears are shifted. The Model A Instruction Book (owner's manual) advises that all gear shifting be done at very low speeds. The manual suggests shifting from 1st to 2nd at 5-8 mph and from 2nd to 3rd at 12-15 mph. Keep in mind that practice will help you find the optimal speeds at which to shift gears for your car.

–---JULY FASHION TIPS----How to Look Like a Model A Era Man with Very Little Effort

Article originally penned by Sharon Johnson of MAFCA and modified by Steve Wild

So your wife is all decked out in her 1930's era outfit and she’s looking at you like, “get with the program.” What does she want? You’ve got on black pants, a white shirt, and you even put on a tie but she still isn’t satisfied. Well here’s where I can help…. All you need to do to make this outfit look like the Model A era, is to add a few accessories, many of which can be purchased new even today. Here are a few examples that will make her think you are a fashionista of the Model A era.

If you're wearing trousers and a longsleeved shirt, why not add a bow tie anda straw boater? Bow ties are back infashion and are available pre-tied or un-tied at most shopping malls. The strawboater will be a little harder to locate butthey're out there. You might also find oneat a costume shop. Add these two simpleitems, roll up your sleeves, and you'renow dressed for a summer outing.

If you're wearing black pants and a shirt, all you need to add are some suspendersand a cap and voila, it's 1930!

If you're wearing a suit, most any of thehats shown to the right would beappropriate possibly excepting the capwhich is generally more of a casual orworking man's hat.

One other thing to consider is that you don't necessarily need to be “dressed up” to look like a man from the 1930's. If you're driving around in a really finely restored Model A, then it seemsappropriate to dress nicely. But if you'redriving a pick-up truck or a car that's alittle rough around the edges, then there'snothing wrong with looking the part of a1930's working man. Cover-alls, ortrousers with suspenders and rolled upsleeves still apply. Remember, it was thetime of the dust bowl and The GreatDepression; not everyone dressed like JayGatsby.

I hope these tips help and will encourage you to occasionally look like a man from the Model A era!

----GREGORY 4TH OF JULY PARADE----

You could tell by the parking lot at the Pinckney McDonalds that it was going to be another strong turnout for the Gregory 4th of July parade.

I think Ed, Gary, and Gary were comparing notes on just what type of candy is most popular with kids at the Gregory parade.

Just a few of the many well appointed Model A's at this year's 4th of July parade.

----GREGORY 4TH OF JULY PARADE----

<Judy and Gary

Cheryl and Vic >

It would seem that the small town America still likes a 4th of July parade!

Some in the group were of the opinion that the kitchen staff at the Inverness Inn might benefit from an overdriveunit or at least, perhaps, a little spark advance to speed things up.

I had to depart before heading over to Dick and Dea's for ice cream so I wasn't able to get any photosof that important part of the day. Thanks again to Dea and Dick for putting together another fine 4th of July event for the Livingston A's!

----TECH TIP----Even after having attended the front end clinic last summer and making some of the adjustments that were recommended, my Tudor still shimmy's like crazy unless I have the steering stabilizer installed. I don't like the stabilizer because 1. I consider it a band-aid that's covering up for other problems thatsimply need to be ironed out, and 2. I've been told that the stabilizer creates a sense of false security by putting additional stress on the tie-rod which might eventually fatigue and break with potentially catastrophic results. I know I'll sort it out eventually but the fact is, there are a lot of different things that will contribute to a front-end shimmy. I found

the following article and thought it was interesting. My car has the rubber radius ball and I'm going toconsider switching over to the original configuration.

Below Tip Reprinted from the Tulsa Model A Ford Club websiteWill a loose ball in the front wishbone at the transmission cause a shimmy?

Yes, this could be one of the issues causing a car to shimmy. A loose ball in the front wishbone can be one of the causes of front shimmy. The front end caster ( 5 degrees) is dependent on the exact position of the front radius ball. Make sure you haveall the correct pieces to mount the radius ball to thebottom of the flywheel housing. It should consist of an upper and lower cap, two spacers that fit through the mounting holes in the lower cap, two springs and two castle nuts. If the assembly is correct and the ball does not fit tight, purchase or make a shim out of a thin fender washer, pounded to fit around the top half of the radius ball and reinstall the cap assembly. Then measure the front end caster. Also make sure the tie rod balls are round and the drag link ends are screwed in tight

enough — check Les Andrews Mechanics Handbook for specific settings. Toe-in should be 1/16″ to 1/8″. Also make sure the mounting bolts for the steering gear box are very tight. Worn king pin and/or bushings can contribute as well. All these things relate to front end shimmy. The most over looked cause is incorrect front end caster adjustment. This is determined by the position of the radius rod ball.

–---EDITOR'S CORNER----First of all, I'd like to thank Leo Couinard for giving me some technical data at the last meeting.I will certainly use it in future editions of the News Brake. This newsletter has proven to be a bitmore than I bargained for given my schedule and any assistance with articles and suggestions for topics is much appreciated.

More than one person has requested more profiles similar to the one I did on Dan Samson a fewissues ago. I've reached out to a couple of newer members but other than Dan, I've had no takers. At this point I'll open it up to the entire club and just say that if you're willing to let me do a profile on you and your car(s), send me an email and I'll start the process.
